Welcome back to the show! For this, our 70th episode, we're absolutely honored to be joined by none other than legendary photographer, artist, and author Glen E. Friedman to discuss the genre-defining 2001 film Dogtown and Z-Boys! Chronicling the rise of the fabled Zephyr Team in the 1970's, this Stacy Peralta-directed documentary brought the roots of modern skateboarding- along with names like Tony Alva, Jay Adams, and Shogo Kubo- into the cultural mainstream, while paving the way for a slew of like-minded documentaries to follow. As a co-producer and creative consultant on the film- as well as having been pool and bank-side for many of the Z-Boys most renowned formative sessions- Glen brings a unique and truly one of a kind perspective, which he was gracious enough to sit down and share with us in candid detail. A legend among legends Glen E. Friedman single handedly documented the California Dogtown skate scene in the mid 70's when he was just a teenager and had already been published in Skateboarder magazine during this time! He shot the likes of the late Jay Adams, TA, Peralta, Red Dog and so many more. Soon after he would go on to do just the same for the emerging punk movement that sprawled the land and took over the consciousness of the youth in the the early 80s. Friedman took some of the earliest photos of bands such as Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat and many more. Friedman was also on the early horizon of Hip-Hop and was able to captures some of earliest pioneers of the game such as Run DMC, ICE-T, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, etc. A true renegade and master of his craft. Friedman has captured some of the most pinnacle moments in skatebaording and music culture in the last 40 plus years. It was incredibe speaking as well as meeting Friedman as I've been a fan of his for as long as I can remember. Enjoy!

Expanded reissues of two classics: Keep Your Eyes Open featuring the Fugazi photographs and DogTown: The Legend of the Z-Boys (with C.R. The third, Together Forever (Rizzoli Books), features photos of Beastie Boys and Run-DMC.  glen also shot the iconic album covers of Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back and Beastie Boys’ Check Your Head. glen’s reputation was built on documenting the cultures of hip-hop, punk and skateboarding but his photography is far from simple snapshots; it’s the work of an artist who possesses the craft to make you experience that singular moment his camera caught each and every time.  Visit glen E. friedman online:                            http://burningflags.com                                      https://instagram.com/glenefriedman boice is the host/producer of a brand new podcast. The StrandCast, The Official Podcast of Strand Bookstore in NYC at 12th and Broadway. On this episode of the podcast, we sit down with renowned photographer Glen E. Friedman.  To take a look through some of Friedman's archive is like stepping back into time and getting the chance to live through the subcultures he was there to bare witness to.  He created images that would help define a generation.  From the Dogtown Days of skateboarding with Tony Alva and Jay Adams, to the raw energy of punk with Black Flag and Minor Threat, to the early days of hip hop with the Beastie Boys and Run DMC, Friedman was there with a camera in hand.  The list of recognizable names and artists that he helped visually introduce to the world goes on and on and stands as a testament to his own taste in what he thought was important to photograph.  From a very early age, Glen E. Friedman was attracted to photography and began to realize that some of the people that were shooting the culture he was a part of didn't seem to know how to approach it.  By the age of 15 he was getting published in Skateboarder magazine, and a few years later he was shooting the punk bands that had begun to become the soundtrack of his own rebellious attitude.  After venturing into a new endeavor of managing and producing an album for Suicidal Tendencies, Friedman started to get turned on to some of the new sounds of hip hop coming out of New York.  It wasn't long before he became friends with Rick Ruben and Russell Simmons and started shooting some of the iconic album covers that those of us that lived through the 80s and early 90s will definitely remember.  Through it all, Friedman always stayed passionate about photography, and tried to only shoot the things that he was moved by.  During our conversation we get the chance to ask Friedman what he thinks the next youth movement will be, what it's like to work with some of the biggest names in music, and the advice he gives to others about following their passion.  So enjoy our conversation with Glen E. This week on The Food Seen Michael sits down with perhaps the first combination pastry chef/hardcore band member to grace the show. Brooks Headley, pastry chef at Del Posto and former drummer of seminal hardcore band Born Against, joins the band's singer Sam McPheeters for a discussion about eating, touring, and balancing creativity between food and music.
