Read more »
The Fabelmans (2022)! Russell McFarlane of People Who Are Good at What They Do Being Good at What They Do (available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify) joins us for a sporadic trip down Steven Spielberg's personal memory lane. As is customary on Russells show, we get a little bit lost in the sauce talking about life. Join us as Mr. Speilberg's existential journey turns into an intrepid voyage of our own!
The Summer of Spielberg comes to a somber, respectful conclusion as we say goodbye to Mr. Spielberg by prying into his personal affairs and taking a look at his latest film, the autobiographical The Fablemans (2022). It's the story of young Sammy Fableman (but they're not hiding that the Fablemans are the Spielbergs) and his budding love of picturemaking. And we have the perfect guest to help us along the way, as we welcome in filmmaker and physical media enthusiast Paul of Twin Flicks (https://www.youtube.com/@TwinFlicks). Paul tells Laci and Matt about how Spielberg inspired his filmmaking journey, and then the three discuss the real lives of Steven Spielberg's parents and how Steven decided to finally stop making movies about other people's divorces and make one about his parents' divorce. And how about this? At 75 years old, Steven Spielberg made one of his best-ever movies. Watch this episode in full: https://youtu.be/ouKRlcanTyw Next week: We're taking a week off. The Bonus episode will be a replay of our YouTube Live discussion wrapping up the Summer of Spielberg. And then, on September 6, we're coming back with an episode about Drumline (2002). Time stamps: 11:22 — Paul's history with Spielberg and our histories with The Fablemans 32:04 — History segment: The real story of Spielberg's parents, and the genesis of The Fablemans 53:57 — In-depth movie discussion 1:30:30 — Final thoughts and star ratings Artwork by Laci Roth. Episode 399 - Sara Lohse - Author of Open This Book, the art of storytelling for aspiring thought leadersAbout the authorSara Lohse is a storyteller, marketer, and brand architect with a knack for turning narratives into connections. Through Favorite Daughter Media, Sara uses her passion and talent to help mission-driven brands amplify their impact, proving that authentic storytelling and strategic marketing go hand in hand. Sara's work and expertise, featured on conference stages including FinCon, PodFest Multimedia Expo, and Speakonomics and in publications such as Authority Magazine, showcase her as a gifted creator fueled by passion and caffeine, dedicated to making a difference through powerful storytelling and marketing.Open This Book: The Art of Storytelling for Aspiring Thought LeadersEverybody has a story. They just don't know it yet.Ever think that silly story you tell to break the ice could actually be a breakthrough for your career? Welcome to Open This Book: The Art of Storytelling for Aspiring Thought Leaders, where we're ditching the textbook definitions and embracing storytelling as the heart of authentic leadership. This isn't your average "how-to" guide. Imagine it as a heart-to-heart with a friend who's seen their fair share of life's plot twists and learned how careful word choice and a smooth delivery can turn chaos into clarity and mishaps into powerful messages.Because the secret to being a thought leader–a content creator, podcaster, speaker, author–is knowing how to transform those "just another day" experiences into an arsenal for connecting in a world that's scrolling past the same old content.Open This Book is your backstage pass to understanding why storytelling isn't just for the Shakespeares and Spielbergs of the world. Designed as part book, part journal (but no part textbook), this book is for anyone who's ever had a “you can't make this up” moment (and let's be honest, who hasn't?). From crafting your narrative to delivering it in a way that feels like a mic drop, we'll explore the ins and outs of telling stories that connect, challenge, and change the game of leadership. So, if you're ready to turn your misadventures into your mission statement, you've come to the right place. Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that the best stories are hiding in plain sight—they just need a little nudge (or a full-on shove) into the spotlight. This isn't just about finding your voice; it's about discovering that your voice, quirks and all, is exactly what the world's been waiting to hear. What are you waiting for? It was an Oppenheimer kind of night. Some called the 2024 Academy Awards broadcast a snooze, but the Ellises had a good time watching the show, especially the comedy bits. The Mulaneys, the Cenas, the Spielbergs (yeah!) and especially the Goslings were funny and very entertaining. We also mostly agreed with---or at least respected---the people and the films that were given trophies. 10 Jahre KINO PLUS. Prost. Rocket Beans wird unterstützt von Radio Bob!

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our series on Trespasser. We look through the glass darkly at the mistakes and how they illustrate some things, before turning to our takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Finished the game! Issues covered: the funhouse mirror, writing the weird things on the whiteboards, voice acting, a game lost to time, the inner monologue, some good set up of a level, the invisible blocking wall surrounding Hammond's, box lifting master, weird technical friction about saves, looking for the white keycard, a misaligned bookshelf and visual language, the green disc, the personal memoir, rubbing the disc on the drive, the keycard mess, finding an alternate solution, immersive sim stuff, parallel developments, shining a light on something you didn't know you wanted, the preset objects, restoring forces, deconstructing what the designers put to place your own, contrivances, more keys that aren't keys, not leaning on the license, a more straightforward puzzle, 526327, the extending weird finger, modeling "dexterity," throwing the keycard in the Atlantic, a helpful (?) velociraptor, pressure plates in the ruins, playing something mid-development, games that should be canceled, deals that forced the game out, breaking your game while you build it, getting better at making the game, hitting the board in the wrong place, setting up the physics and seeing the world a certain way, shaking the Jell-O, letting the Jell-O settle, learning how to kite the dinosaurs, spawning three dinosaurs, making terrible mistakes, choosing appropriate goals, not knowing if a thing is possible, mashing up things, being aspirational, leading the way, admiring the purity, dinosaur ecology, getting to see something like this, being consistent in your rules, providing clarity. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, The Lost World, Through A Glass Darkly, Minnie Driver, Richard Attenborough, Jimmy Carter, Populous, Civilization, Peter Molyneux, Sid Meier, Ultima Underworld, Half-Life 2, DOOM (1993), Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Spielbergs, Bethesda Game Studios, Call of Duty, Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Todd Howard, Velvet Underground, Jell-O, Fallout 3, Hal Barwood, Ray Harryhausen, Land That Time Forgot, Zoo Tycoon, Far Cry 2, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: ?? Notes: Having not seen 1974's The Land That Time Forgot in quite some time, Brett misremembered the movie. He was actually thinking either about scenes from a movie called The Valley of Gwangi, which is from 1969, or One Million Years BC, (1966) both of which feature stop-motion animation by Harryhausen. The Bear (HBO). Jasper: De documentaire over Bassie & Adriaan (bios). Tὰr (bios), vooral vanwege het publiek. Linda: waarschuwing voor racisme in laatste seizoen The Crown (Netflix). Vooruitblik: Julius: Poor Things, de nieuwe Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). Jasper: Furiosa en The Bear S3. Linda: The Andy Warhol Diaries (Netflix).
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (18:31) Doo doo doo, doo, doooooo... this doesn't really work so great written out. I see why the aliens sing this instead. I sommer svingte Harrison Ford pisken for aller siste gang i rollen som Indiana Jones i “Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny”, hele 42 år siden første gang han tok på seg fedoraen i “Raiders of the Lost Ark”! The Chronicles of Young Indiana Jones”. Med: Chris, Kurt &… Innlegget Episode 172: Indiana Jones dukket først opp på Attack of the Killer Kast.

Jurassic Park (1993) Dir. Steven Spielberg Starring: Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, Bob Peck, Martin Ferraro, BD Wong Alex decided that the best way to celebrate his upcoming 30th birthday (RIP) was to talk about a nostalgic film that just so happens to have come into existence precisely a month before he did. We're talking about one of the most iconic summer blockbusters of all time with Steven Spielberg's 1993 science-fiction/action-adventure film Jurassic Park. We get into Spielbergs filmography as a whole, give a retrospective on the Jurassic Park film franchise, and get into what's lacking about modern day blockbusters. For this episode we're drinking Urban Artifact's 'Gadget' and Miller Lite.
E.T. (1982, E.T. – Gjesten fra verdensrommet) er selve innbegrepet på «the magic of the movies». God lytting!
Our series into our favorite 2010s movies continues with the 2018 sci-fi adventure READY PLAYER ONE.

it’s almost porch stoop sidewalk season again. i remember sometimes i would walk down the sidewalk in isla vista and run into someone i know and stop to talk for 15 minutes and then you cross the street and run into someone else and you talk and that happens over and over again on the nice days. you could never really get to where you’re going. and i loved it. there are some spots around davis that also feel like that. and now that i know more people here i look forward to never getting to where i’m going.DOWNLOAD/STREAM RECORDING00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 Jeffrey Lewis & The Voltage “Except For The Fact That It Isn’t” Bad Wiring03:00 Emily Beanblossom “Long Descent” Various / Found / Recorded05:15 Lake Ruth “Extended Leave” Extended Leave / Strange Interiors08:49 New Balance “Red Apples” Red Apples / Gift Shop (Duo Version)12:23 Echo People “Melancholy and Cinnamon” E.P.

In this bonus episode, Andrew and Joshua come out of a brief hibernation to talk about a handful of recent releases. First up, Rian Johnson has his "Knives Out" again with "Glass Onion." Then, Luca Guadagnino takes a bloody road trip in "Bones and All." Andrew covers two Netflix streamers: the Florence Pugh-headlining "The Wonder" and Cartoon Saloon's "My Father's Dragon." Joshua spends some time with "The Fabelmans" (or is it the Spielbergs?). Lastly, they talk two more films about family: James Gray's "Armageddon Time" and the A24 release "Aftersun," the debut feature by Charlotte Wells. In two weeks, the Lens crews welcomes special guests to kick off the Gems of 2022 mini-series. For more details, follow @stlfilmfest on Instagram/Twitter/Letterboxd and @CinemaStLouis on Facebook.

Some bands make fans wait years between albums, and others have been very consistent with rolling out new releases. Early aughts groups Hot Chip and Silversun Pickups fall into the ladder category, dropping a new album like clockwork every two or three years. On this week's Indiecast episode, hosts Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen share their thoughts on Hot Chip's latest LP Freakout/Release (33:56) and Silversun Pickups' new project Physical Thrills (24:53), two albums which rely heavily on synths. The biggest indie news of this week came from a band no one has heard much from in over 15 years: McLusky. The Welsh group officially disbanded in 2005, but they just announced they're going on a North American tour this fall (41:45). Indiecast also discusses the 25th anniversary of Oasis' Be Here Now, partially reigniting the Blur vs. Oasis britpop discourse (47:39).In this week's Recommendation Corner (57:05), Ian tells listeners to check out Spielbergs' new album Vestli. Meanwhile, Steven endorses Cass McCombs' tenth studio album Heartmind.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Listen to Episode 102 and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Hello, yes, welcome back to another episode of Riot Act, a podcast all about music. This week Steve is joined by Gaz Jones, 90's Brit-rock enthusiast and the host of the very excellent Track One, Side One podcast. Together we cast our critical eye over some cracking new music from Russian Circles, The Spielbergs, Danger Mouse & Black Thought and The Interrupters, before reacting to the heart warming news that the two remaining members of Depeche Mode have shared a picture from the studio. We end by talking about the upcoming Reading and Leeds festival, you may have heard that Rage Against the Machine have pulled out and been replaced by The 1975... it hasn't gone over so well. So we look back at our withered memories of the festival and try and work out when it changed, what it used to be and preview the line up for this year. Have a listen to our findings here... This week's Indiecast marks a special milestone: the 100th episode! Indiecast officially launched in August of 2020, and even though the show started in the middle of a lockdown with literally nothing to talk about, they made it to 100 Indiecast episodes nonetheless. To celebrate, Steven and Ian are ranking their favorite Indiecast moments from the past two years (20:49).In terms of banter this week, there were a few music stories that Indiecast would be remiss not to mention. The first is about Taylor Swift and her carbon footprint. Apparently, Swift's private jet has had crazy high C02 emissions this year (3:57). Her team has responded to the claims, but that hasn't stopped the internet from running wild with memes. In other news, Beyonce's latest album Renaissance has racked up some controversy, including an offensive lyric which has since been removed (8:15).Of course, even the 100th episode had to have a Recommendation Corner (59:24). This week, Ian has a list of recommendations which include new music from Peel Dream Magazine, Spielbergs, and Young Jesus, as well as chaotic moments from Sound And Fury Festival which can be found on YouTube. Meanwhile, Steven gives Philly band 2nd Grade their flowers on the heels of their new single "Strung Out On You."New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. A BIGGER BOAT: LINCOLN *SPIELBERG FINALE*For the last two years co-host Jack has insisted that LINCOLN is the worst movie ever made and Spielberg is the worst director of all time. What began as a joke, "let's do a Spielberg season just so we can make Jack watch Lincoln again, hur hur," slowly became the impetus for our strangest season yet. Here we are, the finale, where Jack watches Lincoln again, with a ton of Spielberg as pre-gaming the last three months. Thomas read the Doris Kearns Goodwin book TEAM OF RIVALS, which is the loose inspiration for Tony, Pulitzer, and Emmy-winning legend Tony Kushner's screenplay, which Ken read (none of those awards were for Lincoln). We came into this hardcore prepared, y'all. Will Jack reassess or is it still the worst movie ever made? How successful were Spielberg and Kushner in adapting Kearns' award-winning book? Will Jack think differently about Spielberg as a director after having had to watch his legitimate classics alongside his Always' and Hooks? What are Jack's final ranking of the Spielbergs he watched this season? Will Spielberg gift Jack a 1989 Mazda Miata for having made it to the finish line? So many questions. Just listen and find out, okay? It's all here. A BIGGER BOAT: CLOSE EMPIRES OF THE THIRD SUNTheme song maestro and cinema expert Ryan joins us to talk two of his favorite Spielbergs. One is about a man willingly leaving his family and the other is about a kid unwillingly leaving his family. 1977's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND was Spielberg's big swing after the cachet JAWS bought him. After numerous versions of a script were commissioned (including one by pod fave Paul Schrader) Spielberg eventually Dick Cheney'd the whole thing and ended up as the sole screenwriter (one of two times in his career he would have this credit). Spielberg loved Kubrick and 2001 and so he enlisted Douglas Trumbull to do the FX for Close Encounters - FX that still cooks more than 40 years later. Despite going way over budget and shooting schedule, all of the effort is on the screen with some of Spielberg's most beautiful shooting of his career on display. The story has its hiccups, to be sure, but the essential nature of the film, searching for meaning and connection, still resonates. 1987's EMPIRE OF THE SUN was based on the memoir by JG Ballard and adapted by podcast fave Tom Stoppard. Young Bruce Wayne learns about life the hard way as an English boy in a Japanese internment camp. Some of Spielberg's strongest-ever sequences, filled with beautiful narrative and visual austerity are mixed with his penchant for explicitly telling you what is happening and how you should feel. It's an odd tension, some of his best with his flaws also on bold display. Still, as Ryan tells us, it is one of Spielberg's very best. Two good films this week in our penultimate Spielberg episode!THEME SONG: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

S6 PREMIERE OF "A BIGGER BOAT" Season six will focus on the SSCU, the Steven Spielberg Cinematic Universe. Spielberg, a director who once reigned over Hollywood but has since directed himself into respectable obsolescence has had as many cinematic lives as Batman, a new version trotted out every so often with mixed results. Our guests will walk us through their experiences with Beardo's films and what Spielberg meant then and what he means now. Co-host Ken picked this inaugural episode consisting of RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981) and KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (2008) as his best and worst Spielbergs. Raiders is both one of the most enduring and best-looking films of Spielberg's long career. Paired with the misbegotten, foul-looking Crystal Skull (which made more than any other Indiana Jones movie - people, c'mon!), is a stunning double bill. We'll chart how the mighty king of popular culture has fallen from the tippy top of Devils Tower to whatever the hell was happening in Ready Player One with some surprising theories. Jack and Thomas moderate a lively convo to kick this season off!THEME SONG: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096
We are joined by Endslate favorite, director Erik Matti, because we've seen West Side Story and we're here to talk about it! Was Steven Spielberg's latest opus worth the wait? Was it better than the 1961 original? Was it enough to make us love Ansel Elgort? The inventor of the Summer Blockbuster? One of the most culturally relevant auteur in film? Guy who roasts Nazis? Little Stevey Spielberg gets his own tournament, and boy howdy do we get almost everything wrong.
Steven Spielbergs made five movies featuring aliens: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., A.I., The War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. But the really important alien movies are Spielbergs first two: Close Encounters and E.T. Like Spielbergs other early films, Jaws and Raiders of the Lost Ark, these movies refined a B movie genre into critically acclaimed gourmet popcorn. Close Encounters and E.T. raised the bar for cinematic science fiction. They also did something unusual, which few alien movies that followed, including Spielbergs own, have attempted: the early alien movies function as moral metaphors. The encounters with aliens imaginatively exercise our hearts and minds, and may help to exorcise our worldly wisdom. These movies are good for the soul and more people should watch them or rewatch them. Two of the best reasons for art criticism is to get people to watch the good stuff and to help them see why its good. This may seem a bit obvious, but the most important things in life are usually obvious. People need to be reminded more than they need to be taught. Aristotle said that all philosophy begins in wonder. American philosopher Martha Nussbaum has said that compassion is the basic social emotion. Close Encounters and E.T. remind us of the value of wonder and compassion.
