South East Technological University (SETU) and ESB Networks Training were pleased to announce a new collaboration aimed at enhancing the energy sector in Ireland. The collaboration will create learning opportunities, foster innovation, and strengthen industry-academic partnerships in the sector. The collaboration leverages the outstanding strengths and expertise of each partner that will benefit the wider community. This initiative builds on the unique strengths and expertise of both organisations. SETU's Extended Campus, based within the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, began preliminary consultations with ESB Networks Training in August 2024. These discussions have since led to the formation of a dedicated steering group tasked with guiding the partnership. The group's focus is on delivering key outcomes in education, skills development, instructor upskilling, and technological innovation within the energy industry. The collaboration was officially launched this week at the ESB Networks Training Centre in Portlaoise. Speaking at the event, Dr Frances Hardiman, Head (Carlow) of the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, said, "This partnership with ESB Networks Training represents a significant step forward in bridging the gap between academia and industry. By working together, we are not only enhancing learning opportunities but also driving innovation in the energy sector." Anne Meaney, SETU's Head of Extended Campus, added, "Our upskilling programme will be tailored to enhance the teaching and learning skills of ESB Networks instructors, fostering a culture of teaching excellence within the organisation. Alongside this will be the creation of a strong community of practice, to facilitate knowledge-sharing and collaboration. It will be comprised from a network of electrical lecturing staff from SETU, and instructors and subject matter experts from ESB Networks' Training Centre." Keith Kavanagh, Senior Manager, Technical Training and Development at ESB Networks, stated: "At ESB Networks, we are committed to fostering a highly skilled workforce equipped to meet the evolving demands of the energy industry. Our collaboration with SETU will enable us to share expertise, develop cutting-edge training programmes, and ultimately benefit the entire sector." The partnership highlights the shared commitment of SETU and ESB Networks to skills development, education, and technological progress. This ensures a sustainable and innovative future for the energy sector. The partnership will explore new methods of technology-enhanced learning, including blended delivery models and virtual reality applications. One of the steering group's initial priorities is to focus on the development of an SETU-accredited training programme in Electrical Network Operations. Learners enrolled on this programme will be formally registered as SETU students. Upon successful completion, this programme will pave the way for a broader suite of validated training opportunities. Access to vital infrastructure, including high-voltage substations, will provide learners from both organisations with invaluable, hands-on experience in real-world environments - ensuring Ireland's energy workforce is prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Send us a textIn this episode, I sit down with Justin Stoneham, a retired firefighter with nearly three decades of service in East Sussex Fire Brigade. Justin takes us through his extensive career, beginning as a retained firefighter in 1993 and progressing to roles such as Fire Control Operator, Lead Instructor at the Training Centre, and finally Watch Manager at Eastbourne Fire Station. His career came to a sudden shift in 2022 when he was forced into ill-health retirement due to spinal injuries sustained in the line of duty. Since then, Justin has embarked on a new journey, becoming a qualified counsellor and pursuing a diploma in trauma therapy. Throughout our conversation, Justin reflects on his career, the challenges of retiring due to injury, and the emotional toll of leaving a profession that shaped his identity. The discussion also delves into broader themes of mental health in the fire service and beyond. Justin and I explore the negativity bias in the media and how it can impact mental well-being, emphasizing the importance of cultivating resilience and optimism in an often cynical world. We touch on the feelings of loneliness, shame, and loss of identity that can arise from both injury and retirement, and Justin highlights the critical role of social connections and self-compassion in recovery. Together, we reflect on the importance of person-centred counselling, asking better questions, and creating space for open conversations about trauma and emotional health. Wrapping up the episode, we discuss the value of storytelling—mentioning the film Inside Out as a useful tool for understanding emotions—and the need for accessible support systems for those navigating the complex journey of physical and mental recovery.Negativity Bias - The Decision LabHome | PTSD999 (ptsd-999.com)Mental health services for veterans | Combat StressWhy? Stryker, a global leader in medical technologies, has announced the launch of its Training Centre of Excellence, a new initiative that will help upskill employees, enhance leadership capabilities and foster manufacturing excellence at the company's facility in Tullagreen, Co. Cork. The three-year training initiative, developed with the support of IDA Ireland, will equip employees at Stryker's Tullagreen facility with the agility and skills for the future of work, promote innovative thinking, embed a culture of continuous improvement, and advance sustainability. This comes as the World Economic Forum estimates that six in 10 workers globally will require training before 2027 due to the changing nature of work and pace of technological change. Stryker's new Training Centre of Excellence in Tullagreen will feature a workforce transformation programme focused on upskilling and reskilling employees in every function of the business. This includes a focus on lean management and continuous improvement. Leaders at the facility will be provided with bespoke training to further enhance their agility and ability to develop high-performing teams. In addition, digital and automation engineers will train employees across the site on advanced technologies such as AI and how they can be harnessed to advance innovation and product development. The Training Centre of Excellence will also allow employees to pursue a range of courses and bespoke courses in Environmental Sustainability Awareness. The training programme will promote awareness and drive sustainability initiatives for Tullagreen. Speaking on the launch, Ian Corkey, Site Lead at Tullagreen Stryker in Ireland, said: "The launch of Stryker's Training Centre of Excellence in Tullagreen represents a significant step in our journey toward operational excellence and propelling innovation forward. By investing in our people and their skills, we can ensure that they thrive in a rapidly changing world and foster a culture of creativity and continuous improvement. "This new initiative will help future-proof our investment in our Tullagreen facility and strengthen our team's ability to develop cutting-edge products that help improve patient and healthcare outcomes long into the future. The Tullagreen Training Centre of Excellence will also serve as a lighthouse for other Stryker sites across Ireland. We are grateful to IDA Ireland for their invaluable support in bringing this initiative to life." Rachel Shelly, Global Head of Life Sciences at IDA Ireland added: "IDA Ireland welcomes the launch of Stryker's Training Centre of Excellence and is delighted to be partnering with Stryker on this important investment in its workforce. Stryker's mission is to make healthcare better. This is driven by the company's focus on innovation and performance, delivered through its world class team here in Ireland. The centre exemplifies the company's commitment to talent as an enabler for excellence in healthcare technology; and reinforces Ireland's role as a key partner for global MedTech companies. The launch of Stryker's Tullagreen Training Centre of Excellence builds on the company's annual apprenticeship programme as it reinforces its leadership in advanced manufacturing. Stryker first established a presence in Tullagreen in 1998 with an initial team of 20 employees. Over the past 26 years, the facility has expanded and evolved with employees now focused on manufacturing medical implants for joint replacement, spine and trauma and extremities which are positively impacting patients across the world.

The role of the puppy raiser is so crucial to the success of IGDB’s dogs eventually going back to the Training Centre in Cork for formal training and hopefully becoming a Guide or Assistance Dog. A puppy raiser doesn’t need to have previous experience training dogs, just a love and commitment to support and care for the puppies to ensure they get the best start in their training journey. And support from IGDB’s expert trainers is always available. Vet fees and food is covered by IGDB. Puppy raisers are from all walks of life – those who work remotely, hybrid work, are retired, have children, have pets etc Siobhan Brosnan has been meeting with Irish Guide Dogs staff, volunteers and guide dog users from around the county.  If you are interested in becoming a puppy raiser please email pups@guidedogs.ie or call  0818 506300 or email: support@guidedogs.ie

Her future success was the only thing she cared about.Dawntaya's life changed when her mother decided to enroll her into the Urban Training Centre. The Urban Training Centre (UTC) is a bible-based christian institution aimed at the youth which aids in molding and shaping future leaders for the call of God.Victory Outreach has several Training Centre's, internationally.Dawntaya says she was not aware that her mother had planned to enroll her but after two months of being in the UTC she surrendered her life to Christ and looking back she is grateful to her mother for nudging her in the right direction.God is using Dawntaya in a powerful way.She has been privileged to have been able to serve in her local church as staff in the UTC and then in the Women's Recovery Home in the USA. Currently, she and her husband serve as missionaries in Johannesburg South Africa. She says she feels grateful to be able to assist in the ministry whenever or for whatever is needed, from admin to worship. She feels blessed to be in the will of God.Dawntaya's encouragement to someone who might be experiencing what she did is: “Stop running from the call of God.Completely surrender.I recall that one of the reasons I did not want to get saved was because I was always afraid that I would backslide.Growing up in church I would see so many people come and go and I did not want to do that. I did not want to be that person.I wanted to completely surrender to the Lord when I was ready, which is why I did not get saved but I was leaning on my own understanding.Surrender your life and plans unto Him, He will blow your mind.Let Him use your life the way He wants to use it.
