In their heyday of the 1970s and 1980s, there were more than 200 - possibly more than 400 - feminist restaurants and coffee shops in the USA and Canada. These places were aiming to change ways of working, and upend the hierarchies of restaurants; to provide food that was ethically sourced and affordable to customers, while providing staff with a decent wage; to signal to particular kinds of people that a space was specifically for them. They didn't always succeed, and often they didn't last for more than a couple of years. But they sure did try things. Dr Alex Ketchum, author of Ingredients for Revolution, a History of American Feminist Restaurants, Cafes, and Coffeehouses, explains the ups and downs of how these places used words.Visit theallusionist.org/breadroses for more information about today's topics, plus a transcript of the episode.Support the show at theallusionist.org/donate and as well as keeping this independent podcast going, you also get behind-the-scenes info about every episode; livestreams with me, Martin and my ever-growing collection of dictionaries, and the charming and nurturing Allusioverse Discord community, where we're watching the current season of Great British Bake Off, and donors are learning that apparently it is a surprisingly productive source of writing inspiration for me.This episode was produced by me, Helen Zaltzman, on the unceded ancestral and traditional territory of xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Keep your biscuits from burning!!!—your latest Great British Bake Off episode is fresh out of the oven! This week, Wendy and Greg explore this week's challenge of a biscuit sandwiches, specialty hobknobs, and a biscuit time capsule! We had some smashing successes, some hard misses, and one baker had a TERRIBLE first day, needing a showstopper win to avoid elimination. We're gutted over Biscuit Week! We defend Pui Man's "Pokemon" oxen, intro our new member-created rule (thanks Marisa!), and lightly touch on MasterChef's pitiful offering this week.Check out our new merch (including the TV Chef Fantasy League Commissioner hat, worn by Sierra) at maxfunstore.com.Please support us at maximumfun.org/join, follow us on Instagram @tvcheffantasyleague, and leave us a 5-star review on Apple Podcasts.
Lisa states that biscuit week is her favorite, and the girls go back and forth about the biscuit/cookie difference. Allison and Lisa discuss the difficulty level of the signature bake, and both girls praise Jessika's sliced bacon and egg cookie slices. When the perfect hobnob presents itself as the technical, Lisa believes that she could do this challenge, especially given her skills in carmel making.Allison questions whether or not the bakers are truly given NO instruction for technicals, and, Lisa shares a social media post about understanding the ratios in certain baked goods, insisting the knowledge of such could make you successful without a recipe. Lisa and Allison get into yet another "jump the shark" discussion about this week's showstopper. However, they are quick to praise the major accomplishments of bakers Jessika and Pui man. Lisa states that the Poy man's "JUMBO boat time capsule is on par with Paul's season 6 bread lion from season 6. The girls finish the episode off-track and off topic in their very charming and familiar way. I recently sat down for a chat about all things cake, biscuits and bread and the famous TV show The Great British Bake Off with David Atherton who won 2019 series of the show. He told me who is favourite judge was, his new kids halloween cook book, and about why it is important to see people with a disability and people from other communities on big TV shows like Bake Off. We also talked about our careers!https://www.instagram.com/nomadbakerdavid/?hl=en-gb
Susie learned about a shocking situation developing at a French aquarium housing killer whales where animal rights activists caught the trainers, um, handling the whales to alleviate adult desires brewing between the whales. We hear why it's happening, and why it's so upsetting (beyond the obvious). We discuss the situation between 74yo former NFL coach Bill Bellichek and his 24yo girlfriend, why we can't decide who the villain is, and why it's flipping the script of May/December romances. We learn the story of the Great British Bakeoff, why they take casting so seriously, and why the bakers hold disdain for a particular type of cast member. Susie talks about the lawsuit against airlines who charge people for windowless window seats on flights, and why we think it'll shake up the industry. We learn why many adults are ordering kids meals and why Sarah won't do it. And we discuss whether it is important to be able to read an analog clock and write cursive, and why learning handwriting is about far more than it seems.Brain Candy Podcast Presents: Susie & Sarah's SpOoOoOoOoktacular Spectacle, October 30, Oriental Theater, Denver, Colorado: Get your tickets! The season's first episode is jammed with cakes cakes and so many more CAKES The girls get into a swiss roll discussion after Allison shares having made an inlaid swiss roll cake last spring.Lisa shares her thoughts regarding this very first signature bake, and the degree of difficulty being higher than previous first episodes. With talent levels high, the girls only have some minor errors available for discussion.Allison asks Lisa to rate this episode's new style of technical, and Lisa laments the changes made and wonders if every next technical will potentially set the bakers up for failure.Allison mentions the oddity of facts mentioned in the voice overs, and Lisa praises the return of Alison Hammond as co-host. In this powerful episode of The Worst Girl Gang Ever, hosts Bex Gunn and Laura Buckingham speak with Georgie, former Great British Bake Off contestant, neonatal nurse, and bereaved mother, about her raw, unfiltered journey through stillbirth, miscarriage, baby loss, ADHD, and life after unimaginable grief. Georgie shares the heartbreaking story of losing her daughter Avery at 24+6 weeks during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic — a loss she believes could have been prevented if her concerns had been listened to. As a neonatal nurse who had saved babies younger than her daughter, Georgie's insight into medical negligence, maternal instinct, and the failures in perinatal care is both devastating and eye-opening. We explore: Stillbirth at 24 weeks — warning signs, reduced fetal movement, and why maternal gut instinct matters. Hospital negligence and baby loss during COVID-19 — and why many mothers feel unheard. Life after losing a baby — anger, guilt, and the long road to emotional survival. ADHD in women — how a late diagnosis reshaped Georgie's understanding of herself. Grief and parenting after baby loss — raising surviving children while carrying trauma. Why ‘everything happens for a reason' is the worst thing you can say to a grieving parent. This is an episode about speaking up, breaking the silence, and refusing to accept that baby loss, miscarriage, and stillbirth should remain taboo. Georgie's story is one of pain, survival, and finding a way forward when you feel you can't take another step. Whether you are a bereaved parent, navigating pregnancy after loss, living with ADHD, or supporting someone through infant loss, this conversation offers honesty, validation, and hope. About The Worst Girl Gang Ever The Worst Girl Gang Ever is a real, honest, and emotive podcast that covers the heartbreaking subject of miscarriage, infertility, and baby loss. Expect raw conversations about unspoken experiences, hosted by TWGGE founders Bex Gunn and Laura Buckingham. In this episode, I have a powerful and moving conversation with the wonderful Illyin Morrison. Illyin is a midwife, author, and birth debrief facilitator who specialises in processing difficult and traumatic perinatal experiences. We explore the crucial difference between being 'nice' and being 'kind,' and why she doesn't care about being liked. Illyin shares her personal birth experiences, how they became a catalyst for her work, and her mission to change the narrative around birth from a passive experience to one of active participation. We also discuss the crisis of apathy, the vital role of community, and why the silence from many maternal spaces on global issues is not surprising, but is rooted in capitalism and a conditioned desire for palatability.Key Takeaways:Kindness Over Niceness: Niceness can be a currency used to conform and remain compliant. Kindness, however, is about being generous and well-intentioned, and doesn't require you to be palatable to the status quo. Active Participation in Birth: It's important to shift the narrative from birth being something that happens to you, to something that happens with you. Recognising your own power and agency is key to being an active participant in your own perinatal experiences. The Antidote to Apathy is Community: Society's glorification of individualism can lead to apathy. The antidote is to connect with community, which stimulates empathy, compassion, and a collective force for change that is feared by those in power. Privilege and Selective Empathy: The reluctance of some mothers to engage with global suffering is a form of privilege. We are capable of handling more than we've been told, and exposing ourselves to the reality of others' pain is how we develop compassion, empathy and humanity. Episode Highlights10:00: Illyin explains the difference between being kind and being nice, describing "niceness" as a currency that keeps people compliant. 11:00: Illyin speaks to the unspoken promise adults make to children to provide physical, emotional, and mental safety for them to develop. 18:00: Challenging the narrative that birth is something that happens to us, and instead viewing it as a process we are active participants in. 28:00: Illyin discusses why many in the 'birth business' have remained silent on global atrocities, linking it to capitalism and the need to remain palatable to sustain their income. 39:00: The glorification of individualism intentionally creates a society of selfish goals; the antidote to the resulting apathy is finding community. About the Guest:Illyin Morrison is a midwife, author of The Birth Debrief, and a birth debrief facilitator. She helps people process difficult perinatal experiences and also ventures into grief processing. Listener Erica commented: "Perhaps an idea for a bonus ep of Four Letter Word season would be one on two-letter words: there's an established list that Scrabble nerds end up memorizing, and it's full of weirdness." In fact, there are TWO established lists, NASPA, the North American Scrabble Players Association, which has currently 107 two-letter words, and Collins Scrabble Words, formerly known as SOWPODS, used by the rest of the world and contains at present 127 two-letter words. And this episode, we're going to hear all those two-letter words. If you don't agree with their Scrabbular validity, don't blame me! Send us a textIn this episode of Sober Sparkle, I sit down with the wonderful Briony May, who many of you will know from the Great British Bake Off, where she won hearts in 2018 and made it all the way to the semifinals. Since then, Briony has become a familiar face on UK television, presenting on Food Unwrapped and Escape to the Country, while bringing her warmth, humour and down-to-earth charm into people's homes. But as we discover in this conversation, her story goes far beyond cakes and television.Briony shares her powerful health wake-up call in 2023, when a stomach ulcer led her to give up alcohol, caffeine, fizzy drinks and even vaping. What started as a temporary change quickly became a complete lifestyle transformation. She's since lost three stone, found fresh confidence, and embraced a vibrant sober life filled with roller discos, triathlon training and a new sense of freedom. Together, we talk about the benefits of choosing sobriety, not just in terms of physical health, but also in self-acceptance, emotional resilience and the ability to enjoy life more fully. Our conversation also delves into Briony's role as a passionate disability advocate. She speaks honestly about growing up with one hand, the shame she initially carried around the word “disabled”, and how she has since embraced her identity with pride and strength. Briony reflects on the influence of her agent Andrew, the importance of representation in media, and the power of communities like Reach in supporting families and children with limb differences. Her insights highlight how embracing every part of ourselves can lead to deeper confidence and connection. We also explore what it means to rediscover joy when alcohol is no longer in the picture. Briony talks openly about the ways sobriety has helped her manage stress, show up more present with her daughter, and even improve her work as a presenter. She shares her “play the tape forward” approach for handling triggers, her love of swimming as a new-found passion, and the sense of pride she now feels in aligning her choices with her values. This episode is full of warmth, honesty and inspiration. Briony's story is a reminder that you don't have to hit rock bottom to make a change. Sometimes it just takes a wake-up call, a little curiosity, and the courage to say yes to a different way of living. From Bake Off star to sober role model, her journey shows how transformation is possible, and how choosing to go alcohol-free can unlock energy, joy and self-belief in ways you might never expect.

What if “just buying the market” isn't the end of the story? In this episode, we are joined by Gerard O'Reilly, Co-CEO and Co-CIO of Dimensional Fund Advisors, for a deep dive into what really drives net investment returns. Gerard returns to the Rational Reminder podcast to explain the key principles that differentiate Dimensional's approach from traditional indexing—and why implementation, flexibility, and detail matter so much more than investors might think. We explore the concept of hidden costs in index investing, how index reconstitution and trading frictions erode returns, and the nuanced decisions that shape a market portfolio: defining the market, excluding low-returning stocks, optimizing tax efficiency, and more. Gerard breaks down how Dimensional's rules-based, evidence-backed process improves outcomes through smart exclusions (like IPOs and high asset-growth firms), precise trading, securities lending, and better handling of corporate actions. From the dangers of chasing low fees to the surprising benefits of thoughtful execution, this conversation is a masterclass in next-level investing. Key Points From This Episode: (0:01:07) Why Gerard was invited back: Dimensional's approach to hidden costs and net returns. (0:02:38) Looking beyond “index good, fees bad”—why investors should dig deeper. (0:04:21) Gerard's background: From Caltech rocket scientist to Dimensional co-CEO. (0:12:45) Defining the market: Free float, liquidity thresholds, and dynamic inclusion. (0:17:52) How small-cap index definitions can create return differentials as high as 10%. (0:22:03) What securities Dimensional excludes—and why: low-profitability growth, high asset growth, IPOs, and REITs. (0:29:26) Why IPOs are excluded for 6–12 months and the mechanics behind inclusion. (0:33:16) Why Dimensional's exclusions aren't like traditional active management. (0:35:09) The “Great British Bake-Off” analogy: baking better portfolios with the same ingredients. (0:38:13) How securities lending boosts returns—and how Dimensional does it better. (0:42:09) Managing corporate actions (like M&A) to reduce cash drag. (0:45:18) How Dimensional deals with buybacks and new share issuance. (0:47:29) Momentum, short-term reversals, and securities lending fees as trading signals. (0:50:36) Why Dimensional may lend out stocks that have negative momentum. (0:52:42) How trading costs affect net returns and Dimensional's execution edge. (0:56:06) Hidden costs of indexing: Index fund rebalancing and price impact. (1:03:19) Why focusing solely on fees is misleading—and what “value for service” really means. (1:06:18) DFUS: A case study of Dimensional's market series outperforming index funds. (1:08:44) How Dimensional builds portfolios with intentional tilts toward higher expected returns. (1:12:35) What excites Gerard: Expanding access, ETF innovations, and global growth.
