Lauren Livak Gilbert, lead of the Digital Shelf Institute, joins the podcast to explore how agentic commerce and AI tools like Amazon's Rufus are transforming product discovery. As the industry shifts from traditional SEO keyword stuffing to natural language and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), sellers must optimize their Product Detail Pages by directly answering consumer Q&As to feed context-driven AI recommendations. Currently, nimble challenger brands are capturing market share by adapting quickly and building off-site trust signals, while large legacy brands are often bogged down by massive SKU counts, messy data taxonomy, and regulatory hurdles. To overcome these challenges and safely scale AI content generation, Lauren emphasizes the critical need for strict E-commerce hygiene and a single source of truth for product data using Product Experience Management platforms like Salsify. After one of the first gatherings of some ecommerce leads that I helped put together around 10 years ago, I will never forget what one of the attendees said to me - “thanks to this, I found my people.” From that sentence, the seeds of the Digital Shelf Institute were born. The desire to unite a community to figure all this stuff out together. Now the DSI is most fortunate to have another leader from ecommerce join our ranks to put her expertise, passion, and energy to work on growing and inspiring the DSI Community. Our guest today is Jamie Clapper, who brings almost two decades experience in omnichannel commerce to the DSI as our new Community & Content Manager. She has some things to say.
Recorded live from the stage at the SIAL Innovation Show in Montreal, this special episode of The Voice of Retail dives headfirst into one of the most disruptive forces reshaping commerce: artificial intelligence and its growing influence on how consumers discover, evaluate, and purchase food and grocery products. Michael welcomes Guillaume Mathieu, Co-Founder and Partner at Montreal's ilot, a strategic consultancy helping brands and retailers navigate growth, innovation, and consumer behaviour in Quebec and beyond. Guillaume also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Boillon, a leading B2B media platform for Quebec's agri-food sector, and is himself a podcaster in the brand and food space. Together, they unpack new consumer research revealing a fascinating contradiction: while consumers—especially younger shoppers—are rapidly embracing AI tools in everyday life, many remain hesitant when AI intersects with food. Why? Because food is deeply emotional, personal, and tied to authenticity. Guillaume shares proprietary insights showing that consumers are comfortable with “invisible AI,” such as asking ChatGPT for recipes or meal ideas, but become significantly more skeptical when AI becomes physically visible—whether that's robotic baristas, automated cooking systems, or AI-driven food preparation. The conversation explores how search behaviour is rapidly evolving from short keywords to highly contextual prompts. Consumers are no longer searching “pasta sauce”—they're asking for “a locally made tomato sauce perfect for a Mother's Day dinner.” That shift is creating enormous opportunities for smaller brands to compete against larger incumbents by winning on relevance, storytelling, authenticity, reviews, and discoverability across platforms like Reddit, websites, and emerging generative engines. Michael and Guillaume also examine the rise of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), the next evolution of SEO, and why brands must rethink their digital content strategy immediately. Product pages, recipes, reviews, seasonal content, and contextual storytelling may soon become critical assets in getting surfaced by platforms like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and other AI-powered recommendation engines. On the retail side, the discussion turns to smart appliances, AI-powered grocery ecosystems, and the possibility that refrigerators themselves could become the next e-commerce channel. As technology companies, delivery platforms, and retailers compete for ownership of consumer relationships, this episode offers essential strategic insight for grocers, food brands, marketers, and retail executives. https://ilotetcie.com/ Michael LeBlanc is the president and founder of M.E. Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/P4MZ7Wofuoo Boris Rütten (Global Head of eCommerce at Henkel, who visited us 2023) and Salim Bachatene (SVP eCommerce Sales at NIQ) join us to tackle one of the most critical, and often overlooked, topics in modern commerce: Data. For years, eCommerce teams have focused on growth levers without fully addressing the complexity of bringing data together. But as AI and advanced analytics take center stage, the reality is clear: without strong data foundations, there is no meaningful insight and no scalable impact. In this podcast we explore how brands can connect online and offline data, establish the right governance, and turn fragmented inputs into actionable, cross-functional decisions. Topics covered: Why data has traditionally been ignored in eCommerce—and why that's changing fast The three essential layers of commerce data: online, offline, and the connection between both Why AI and insights are only as strong as the data behind them The consequences of poor data management—and how to avoid them Governance: who should own data internally, and how to structure it effectively Navigating a world without digital shelf standards Practical recommendations to move from siloed data to actionable growth More: Other Webinars with NIQ Boris' 2023 Episode: https://www.fmcgguys.com/henkel-boris-rutten-ecommerce/ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fmcgguys/ Follow us on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/fmcgguys/ Audio Mixing by Modest Ferrer Voice Acting by Jason Martorell Parsekian Disclaimer The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the individual guests and do not necessarily reflect the views of The FMCG Guys (Dwyer Partners SL) or its partners. Shifting Optimization Strategies: The evolution from keyword-stuffing to a more nuanced approach focused on consumer language, mobile relevance, and content that appeals both to customers and marketplace algorithms. Paid vs. Organic in Digital Shelf Strategy: Scott explains balancing organic and paid tactics, and why he no longer believes in strict “upper/mid/lower-funnel” strategies. Instead, eos seeks to create memorable, shareable moments across multiple touchpoints. The Rise of AMC and Measurement: How Amazon Marketing Cloud (AMC) has moved from “nice to have” to essential for tracking incremental impact and optimizing media spend effectively. AI: Both Exciting and Alarming: Scott offers candid thoughts on the double-edged sword of AI in ecommerce, from helping with data analysis to concerns over generative imagery and deepfakes.

Digital price labels, which are rapidly replacing paper shelf tags at US supermarkets, haven't led to demand-based pricing surges, according to a new study that examined five years' worth of prices at one grocery chain. But some shoppers, consumer advocates and lawmakers remain skeptical about the tiny electronic screens, which let stores change prices instantly from a central computer instead of having workers swap out paper labels by hand. Social media is filled with warnings that grocers will use the technology to charge more for ice cream if it's hot outside, hike the price of umbrellas if it's raining or to gather information about customers. Lawmakers have introduced bills to limit the use of digital labels. In Arizona, Democratic state Rep. Cesar Aguilar recently introduced a bill that would ban them altogether. Aguilar said he's determined to start a conversation about digital labels and how stores could abuse them. Researchers say those fears are misplaced. A study published in late May found “virtually no surge pricing” before or after electronic shelf labels were adopted. The study also determined that discounts were slightly more common after digital labels were introduced. Economists have long wondered why grocery prices don't change more often. Here's one reason: Shoppers watch grocery prices closely, and stores don't want to risk angering them. Companies say electronic price labels have tremendous advantages. Walmart says it used to take employees two days to change paper price labels on the 120,000 items it has in a typical store. With digital tags, it takes a few minutes. The labels can also be useful. Some have codes that shoppers can scan to see recipes or nutrition information. Aguilar, the Arizona lawmaker, said he also opposes the transition to digital labels because he thinks they will cost jobs. But Relex Solutions' Amanda Oren said she doesn't think cutting labor costs is the main reason stores deploy digital price tags. “It's about working smarter, not harder, and being able to use that labor in better ways across the store rather than these very mundane, repetitive tasks,” she said.
