Nick and Angela welcome one of their favourite comics to Dish HQ. Broadcaster, comedian, writer and conductor Sue Perkins was born in South London. A Cambridge University graduate, Sue's journey into comedy began when she joined the prestigious Footlights, where she met her friend Mel Giedroyc. The duo quickly made a name for themselves, hosting Channel 4's Late Lunch and Light Lunch in the nineties, while also writing for the legendary French & Saunders and, later, Absolutely Fabulous in 2003. Her biggest TV job to date came in 2010, when she and Mel cohosted The Great British Bake Off for seven wildly successful series. Outside of television, Sue's broadcasting credentials include hosting Britain's best-loved radio comedy Just A Minute on BBC Radio 4. You can watch her new TV show Chess Masters: The Endgame on BBC iPlayer and listen to her new podcast Mel and Sue: Should Know By Now on Audlibe. Nick pours Sue a Botivo, a non-alcoholic aperitivo, to start, while Angela prepares a mouthwatering Malaysian prawn laksa curry. The experts at Waitrose pair this with a La Val albariño and for dessert Angela makes Sue her favourite black forest gateau. Nick and Angela are (in their words) giddy at the sight of Sue Perkins sitting opposite them and our trio collapse into fits of laughter throughout this conversation. Sue loves to cook and recounts her best and worst food moments. She also talks about the time she met a shaman in a hot tub, and listen out for her incredible response to the End of Show Question. You can now watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube All recipes from this podcast can be found at waitrose.com/dishrecipes A transcript for this episode can be found at waitrose.com/dish We can't all have a Michelin star chef in the kitchen, but you can ask Angela for help. Everybody sing *poooddccasssstttttt* Hello and welcome to The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X Podcast! Chris and the team are taking a well-earned break this week but don't worry, you're in safe hands with trusty Toby Tarrant. Toby kicked off the week with a massive announcement about his ‘Tarrant vs The Thames' challenge, in aid of Global's Make Some Noise. He'll be travelling 56 miles down the river in true style: in a giant unicorn pedalo. The challenge will take place in October and Toby would be thrilled with any support or donations you can give. Toby was joined by some fabulous guests this week. Firstly, Teri Hatcher, aka Lois Lane, brought glamour and giggles, telling us all about how the spooky movie ‘Coraline' is returning to cinemas in 3D this August. Next, TV adventurer Aldo Kane made his most daring expedition yet to the Leicester Square studios, telling Toby all about the mental trails of exploring, as well as the importance of anti-chafing creams. Then, national treasure Mel Giedroyc met Toby for the first time, and agreed to join Toby on his pedalo challenge. Finally, comedian Maisie Adam made a last minute visit and, without knowing what she was in for, got roped into playing a quiz with the team. Speaking of quizzes, Toby turned the studio into his own house of games this week, with the return of Stumpy's Quiz, as well as two new games: Intern Bella's ‘Squeak, Squeal, Squawk' and Producer Harry's ‘Rock n Roll Games Console'. And that's a wrap! It's all good stuff, but here's some Tarrant treats...A spooky tale about sausage rolls in Sunderland An ‘encouraging' message from Sir Steve Redgrave Toby's roast from a robotEnjoy! Send us a Text Message. Each episode takes a look at a different aspect of the wonderful world of amateur theatre, and features an amateur theatre-maker talking about their theatrical life, theatrical loves, and the times when they've ‘died' on stage. In this month's episode, our Backstage Pass holder, John O'Neill, speaks with director Dewi Johnson, who's recently been working in London's West End theatres including as Associate Director on Simon Nye's ‘The Crown Jewels' at the Garrick Theatre, starring Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc, and as Assistant Director on Ben Elton's stage production of ‘Upstart Crow', starring David Mitchell. You'll find Dewi's resumé contains its fair share of comedy!Dewi's journey from teenage director, to Drama School student, to West End associate director, took him through the Crescent Theatre (Birmingham), along the way. Here, Dewi's also had amateur experience over the last 11 years including as an actor, costume designer, set designer, and of course director, most recently directing the Crescent's dazzling 2019 production of Jessica Swale's semi-musical play ‘Nell Gwynn', set during the heart of the Restoration period in England in the late sixteen-hundreds. Dewi's expertise in and love of the Restoration era theatre is an absolute gift to his cast and crew, and so, of course, to his audiences too.

It is easy to be envious of Mel Giedroyc's career. A comedian, actress and a TV presenter who is never off the telly and with good reason, because audiences love her and rightly so. With her long term partner in comedy, Sue Perkins, they presented the original Great British Bake Off to crown their everlasting careers but perhaps the most irrefutable proof of Mel's success is that she is not on Twitter. Mel G has been there, done it all and is a perfect guest to get her Take on life.

Monday marked 100 years since the BBC began broadcasting on radio. To celebrate that centenary, we commissioned a poem by Kim Moore and created a soundscape to show how much women's lives, and the noises that surround them, have changed - using BBC archive from the 1920s right through to the present day. Why did the BBC get its nickname ‘Auntie'? And what kind of aunt would she be? We discuss with television presenter and comedian Mel Giedroyc and historian of the BBC, Professor Jean Seaton. ‘The Secret World of Incels' is a Channel 4 documentary that gives a window into the lives of Incels and explores what makes them engage with these misogynist online forums that have led to some horrific acts of violence. We discuss with its presenter Ben Zand and Dr Kaitlyn Regehr. The Internet Watch Foundation has been tracking the increasing trend of perpetrators grooming children online and coercing them into sexually abusing themselves on camera. The foundation has recognised a lot of what they are seeing as Category A, the most severe kind of sexual abuse, due to it including penetration with an object. A snapshot study out yesterday looks into the objects being used, and how they are everyday domestic items that can be found in the household. We hear from Susie Hargreaves, CEO of the IWF, and Vicki Green, CEO of the Marie Collins Foundation. The story contains content that some listeners may find distressing. What does the Artemis moon mission mean for women? We speak to Llbby Jackson from the UK Space Agency. The Big Swing is the world's first double female-fronted big band. It is led by jazz musicians Georgina Jackson and Emma Smith who aim to elevate female visibility in the big band world. They join us in the studio for a special performance.
Today it is 100 years since the BBC began broadcasting on radio. To celebrate that centenary, we have commissioned a poem by Kim Moore and created a soundscape to show how much women's lives, and the noises that surround them, have changed - using BBC archive from the 1920s right through to the present day. We also ask why did the BBC get its nickname ‘Auntie'? And what kind of aunt would she be? To mark 100 years since the BBC started daily radio broadcasts, Emma Barnett is joined by television presenter and comedian Mel Giedroyc and historian of the BBC Professor Jean Seaton. Sir Gavin Williamson resigned from the cabinet last week following allegations of bullying; the Labour MP Charlotte Nichols has claimed there is a "whisper list" of 40 politicians to never accept a drink from or be alone with; and claims have emerged over the weekend that civil servants at the Ministry of Justice were offered “respite or a route out” when Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab was reappointed last month. Emma asks Anne Milton, the former deputy chief whip who has accused Gavin Williamson of subjecting MPs to “unethical and immoral behaviour" - whether we can infer a 'blokeish' culture in politics. We also hear from Isabel Hardman, Assistant Editor at the Spectator. Anna Sorokin was born to an ordinary family in Moscow, before moving to Germany as a teenager. But upon arriving in New York, she transformed herself into Anna Delvey, a German multimillionaire heiress with a trust fund in Europe. She used this persona to lead a lavish lifestyle and conned friends, big banks and hotels into thinking that her fortune could cover the luxury she desired. But it was all a con. She was found guilty in 2019 of theft of services and grand larceny, having scammed more than $200,000 (£145,000) and spent almost four years in jail. In her first radio interview since being released, Anna Delvey joins Emma.

Sylvia Mac overcame an appalling trauma as a young child to become a vocal supporter of, and dedicated campaigner for, people living with disfigurement. After a lifetime of agonising about what she saw as her ugly body, a moment of revelation changed her mindset and her attitude and she launched herself into creating an organisation she calls Love Disfigure, through which she supports others and challenges the fashion retail and media industries to be more inclusive and representative. Sylvia describes the harrowing experience of the accident that changed her life, the years of treatment and procedures she has endured, and continues to need, and the mental toll they have taken on her. She recalls the moment her self-image changed for ever and describes the work she does to empower and inspire others who are struggling with their mental health and self-esteem because of their body issues. She also answers the four quick-fire questions we ask each of our Extraordinary Ordinary women: In this episode we're also joined by the brilliant actress, comedienne and presenter, and host of the Women of the Year Lunch, Mel Giedroyc, who remembers getting very over-excited on her first time at the event by an encounter with one particular guest and the joyous, joyful and joy-spreading nature of the lunch each year.

I am thrilled to kick off season four - season bloody four! - of The Shift with today's guest, Mel Giedroyc (and yes I did practice saying that 935 times). Mel is (she reckons) the more punctual half of beloved comedy duo, Mel and Sue, an actress, writer and, drum roll, NATIONAL TREASURE thanks to the best part of seven years spent eating cake. (Nice gig if you can get it) And now - bloody over-achiever - she's written her debut novel, The Best Things, which is as warm, hilarious and full of pin-sharp observation as you'd expect.Mel talks ironing - and asks the big question: who actually irons? The terror of hitting the financial skids and walking away from the Bake Off payday. Being a menopause-dodger and the importance of bringing more perimenopausal characters to our screens. AND writing her first novel at 51. 51! There is hope for us all! (Or is Mel just exceptional... I'll leave it to you to decide.) Either way there's tons of juvenile humour and plenty of sniggering. You have been warned. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and The Best Things by Mel Giedroyc. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford. The DO Lectures is an ideas sharing event run out of an old cowshed in Cardigan Bay, Wales. In this series of DO podcasts, Gav Thompson chats to people about how they have achieved their amazing levels of success, as well as uncovering some of the despites that they have had to overcome to get there. Sue Perkins is one the the UK's best loved comedians, performers and TV presenters. She chats to Gav about her time as President of the Cambridge Footlights, about starting out in the industry with her best friend Mel Giedroyc and the road that led to her becoming the queen of the baked goods light entertainment juggernaut, Bake Off. They talk about her very honest and refreshingly human approach to travel shows and debate when one becomes a National Treasure. They also have a very revealing conversation about some of Sue's despites, such as her brain tumour and anxiety, as well as compare Dad dying stories. Please have a listen, enjoy, subscribe and review.

Welcome to the final episode of this series of The Making Of... from The Female Lead. Our guest this week is the comedian, actor, writer and national treasure Mel Giedroyc! This was our first ever conversation with Mel, but it feels like talking to an old friend because she is so relaxed and funny and loves a chat. She is also packed full of wisdom - just as a national treasure should be. Best known as part of the Mel and Sue double act, she started out doing live sketch comedy, then moved into acting and presenting, culminating in seven years hosting the phenomenal Great British Bake Off. Famous for their unique style of gentle but irreverent humour, Mel and Sue set the tone for what has become one of Britain's best-loved shows. As well as presenting, acting and everything else, Mel has also written two books on motherhood and now her first novel The Best Things, which is out in the new year. Mel shared a great list of moments that have made her, ranging from her first “road to Damascus moment” in the theatre and up to losing her house in her 40s. We also talked about the loneliness of being a new mum, female friendship and how she managed seven years of eating loads of cake. The interview was recorded over zoom, at the height of lockdown, so please bear with us as some bits may sound a little wobbly. Although this is the last episode, we will be back soon with a new series of brilliant women in the new year. * Mel Giedroyc grew up in Leatherhead as the youngest of four children, she went to Cambridge University where she met Sue Perkins and they formed a double act which was shortlisted for the Best Newcomers Award at the Edinburgh Festival. They built a long-standing professional relationship including hosting Light Lunch and then Late Lunch on Channel Four. Mel & Sue are best known these days for presenting The Great British Bake Off. In September 2016, Love Productions switched the contract to televise The Great British Bake Off from the BBC to Channel Four. Both Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc stepped down as hosts of the show after seven years. In her career, Mel has worked on numerous TV shows and radio shows, as well as on stage - most recently in Steven Sondheim's Company in the West End and Much Ado About Nothing at the Rose Theatre. Mel has always loved writing and has published two books about motherhood From Here to Maternity: One Mother of a Journey and Going Ga-Ga: Is there life after birth? In 2021 her first novel The Best Things will be released. * The Making Of is hosted by Bea Appleby and is edited by Lauren Lind. The production is brought to you by The Female Lead And the whole series is very kindly sponsored by Missoma

David Hamilton plays hangman with a giant keyboard. But no actual hanging man. It was a family show. It's like Mel Giedroyc's "Letterbox" but a lot more expensive-looking. I mean a TV show called "Letterbox." Not Mel Giedroyc's actual letterbox at her house. I bet that's quite a reasonably-priced looking letterbox. Kirsty Young's castaway is the comedian and TV presenter Sue Perkins. She and her friend Mel Giedroyc first appeared as a comedy duo at the Edinburgh Fringe over 20 years ago and together they presented the first seven series of The Great British Bake Off. Born at the end of the 1960s, Sue grew up in Croydon, the eldest of three siblings. By her own description a "shy and awkward" child, she nonetheless made it to Cambridge University to study English. She and Mel met at a Footlights open mic gig soon after she'd arrived. Their first joint high-profile success was landing a new live daytime programme on Channel 4 called Light Lunch, which turned them into household names.
