Still basking in the glow of an NWSL Championship, we reconvene this week without a match to recap and little news to share. However, there was one development over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as defender Carrie Lawrence announced her retirement from the game on Black Friday. We discuss what Carrie's retirement means for the Pride. After the brief Pride news portion of the show, we dive straight into our mailbagbox, which is much shorter this week. During this poetic edition of the mailbagbox, we answer questions about whether we can imagine sitting next to one of our regular listeners at an NWSL Championship and if Marta could have an opportunity to right a wrong. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. We'd also appreciate any ratings or reviews you can leave wherever you get your podcasts, and if you do that on Apple Podcasts, we'll find them easily and read them on the show. After the mailbagbox, it's our annual "Stays/Goes" segment, in which we go through the entire Orlando Pride roster, looking at each player's contract situation and trying to determine which players we expect to be in purple again next season (and which ones will move on). Haley Carter and company will want to build on the best season in league history, so there are bound to be a few more departures if the club can lure even more talent to Central Florida. Here's how Episode 72 went down: 0:15 – Carrie Lawrence calls it a career and our mailbagbox is much more manageable this week. 20:11 – Our annual Orlando Pride roster review and projections for 2025.

The Orlando Pride came back from the road and there really is no place like home. After the obligatory Central Florida weather delay, the Pride went out and beat defending NWSL champion NJ/NY Gotham FC 2-0 at Inter&Co Stadium. Adriana found her scoring boots and bagged herself a brace, and the Pride kept another clean sheet. We discussed the highlights from the game, checked the result against our score predictions from last week, and made our selections for Player of the Match. Our mailbagbox this week had concerns about Haley Carter's role with her new title, wondered if referees are more lenient with the Pride's opponents, asked which midfielders and formation might be used in Chicago, and questioned what the final score really was on Sunday. After the mailbagbox, we dove into some of the recent Orlando Pride news, including Carter's new contract, Alex Kerr being waived, and the U-20 USWNT not using Ally Lemos in its 1-0 opening loss to Spain. We're not saying the U.S. lost to Spain because Lemos didn't play, but no one can prove the Yanks wouldn't have won if she had. Finally, we look ahead to Orlando's trip to face the Red Stars in Chicago. The Pride usually do better against the Red Stars on the road than at home, which is weird, but hopefully that trend continues. We also provide our key matchups and score predictions for this weekend's game. Here's how Episode 59 went down: 13:55 – The Pride got two goals from Adriana and a big W. 14:54 – Our mailbagbox has anxiety issues, and some bits of Orlando Pride news. 33:18 – Our preview of Orlando's trip to play the Chicago Red Stars.

We open this week's show with a discussion of the Orlando Pride signing two young players to new contracts through the 2025 season with option years for 2026. Rookie Cori Dyke and second-year pro Summer Yates have earned new deals and the Pride didn't want to waste time getting them to stick around for a bit longer. We discuss both players' accomplishments in 2024, and of course we recorded the night before Orlando signed Viviana Villacorta to a similar new deal. Haley Carter is doing all of the business! Our mailbagbox asked about the NWSL Best XI for the month of June, Marta's highlights, National Team Replacement Players, and more. The Pride now head to North Carolina to face a difficult Courage side in the NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup, and we have no idea what to expect. Will Seb Hines play his best available lineup with more than half of his starters unavailable? Will he give opportunities to young players to see how they respond to getting competitive minutes? Will it be a combination? There are a lot of variables and we're not even tempted to try to figure out how to identify the key matchups or predict the score. Here's how Episode 52 went down: 0:15 – The Pride signed Cori Dyke and Summer Yates to new deals and we love seeing the club invest in its young players. 15:52 – The mailbagbox is interested in June's NWSL Best XI and other topics. 38:35 – It's hard to predict Orlando's Summer Cup opener at North Carolina due to a number of missing Orlando starters on international duty.

Our off-season schedule continues and we slipped our January episode in just under the wire. But the wait was worth it! First of all, there was a ton of news in January, and the Pride are already hard at work in preseason camp for what could be a pivotal 2024 season. Orlando said goodbye to some players, added a few (including via the 2024 NWSL Draft), and dropped both the preseason and season schedule. We touch on each of the major stories from the last four weeks. After that, we welcome in a very special guest. Orlando Pride Vice President and General Manager Haley Carter was kind enough to join us for an exclusive interview, and she was exceedingly generous with her time. We could honestly talk to her for hours and her enthusiasm for the upcoming season and the direction the Pride are following is contagious. She touched a little bit on such topics as the need for a reserve side, the Messiah Bright trade, the NWSL draft, the culture the Pride are building, the job Seb Hines is doing, how the club is working on building a bigger fan and supporter following, and much more. There were so many more questions we had, but those will have to wait until next time, as we couldn't have possibly asked for any more of Haley's time. Finally, we turned our attention to our mailbagbox, which asked us about the possibility that Jordyn Listro will once again sign with the Pride, Orlando's approach after Bright's departure, and the team's off-season compared to other NWSL sides. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. Here's how Episode 32 went down: 0:15 – All the Orlando Pride from the last month in small, bite-sized pieces. 20:56 – An amazing and enlightening interview with Haley Carter. 1:03:09 – Our mailbagbox is back and we got some excellent questions for this episode.

Our off-season schedule continues as we reconvene for a December episode and there was more to talk about this time around. The Pride have been busy since our last show and the pattern has started to clarify what the 2024 squad will look like, as well as some of the position groups beyond the next NWSL campaign. The discussion begins at the back as we talk about the Pride adding one goalkeeper before subtracting another, bringing that position group into focus for the season ahead (and probably beyond). We welcome Sofia Manner in from Finland and say goodbye to the departing Carly Nelson, who is returning to her native Utah. After the goalkeeper talk, we discussed whether the Orlando Pride overachieved under Seb Hines in 2023. Did Hines get more out of his squad than we should have expected? Did he get the perfect amount? Or did he not quite get as much as the roster had to offer? Our mailbagbox, asked us about the Pride as a holiday song, what the new midfield signings mean, and about what Haley Carter has brought to the club. Remember, you can ask us anything by hitting us up on Twitter at either @TheManeLand or @SkoPurpSoccer and using the hashtag #AskSkoPurp. Or you can visit our show page, scroll down, and fill out the handy form. After we answer the mail, we turn our attention to the back line. Orlando has been busily signing the 2023 starting back four to new deals, with three of the four now under contract through 2026, while Rafaelle is under contract through 2025. It's clear that the club likes this group and it's putting its money on it. If they can become even more cohesive in 2024, it'll be a move that pays off. Finally we turn our attention toward that midfield question from the mailbagbox. The Pride have added a pair of Brazilian internationals to the central midfield and it appears the majority of the roster is now signed through either 2025 or 2026, meaning there should be some continuity across the next couple of seasons. Angelina and Luana, meanwhile, could vastly improve the Pride's central midfield and they should assimilate quickly since they're used to playing between defender Rafaelle and attackrs Adriana and Marta. They could help spring Orlando's faster forwards and may also assist with helping the Pride's fullbacks work the ball up the field with fewer turnovers. Here's how Episode 31 went down: 0:15 – The Orlando Pride goalkeeper position seems set for 2024, but who will win the starting job remains to be seen. 17:18 – The mailbagbox is the lifeblood of the show. Thanks for the questions! 24:06 – The Pride's back line has no anxiety whatsoever about contracts for the next couple of years and the midfield has added even more Brazilian ingredients to the roster.

Before this week's show gets underway, we've got some announcements to make and we are pretty pumped up about them all. There is our fundraiser to launch our independence, obviously, which has us all extremely emotional and thankful. To that end, we began the long process of giving out our shout-outs to our brand new Founders. It's going to take a few shows to get them all in! If you were part of this week's, it means we don't have any way to contact you to get your benefits to you, so please email us. Then there are some podcast-specific announcements that we feel will make everyone's experience more enjoyable. We hope you like what's coming! Now, on to why you're here... Orlando City has played to two consecutive scoreless draws and the two results felt quite different from each other. The Lions survived squad rotation against a good FC Cincinnati side last weekend in league play and survived Tigres in Concacaf Champions League play on Tuesday night in Mexico. We analyze the two matches and make our Man of the Match selections for both games. After our conversation about two straight 0-0 draws, Orlando Pride Vice President of Soccer Operations and General Manager Haley Carter jumps on with us to talk about the job she's been hired to do. Among the things she shared with us is a huge tease about the summer transfer window, but alas...no specifics yet. Carter obviously has a lot of belief in Pride Head Coach Seb Hines and in strengthening the club through development at every level. After our discussion with Carter, there was news from the Pride side about the team's latest preseason win, the signing of draft picks Messiah Bright and Summer Yates, and a minor schedule change. We dipped into a full mailbag this week to discuss Ercan Kara, the AFC Richmond players we'd want to suit up for Orlando City, and more. If there's anything — and we do mean anything — you want us to address on the next show, just ask by tweeting it to us at @TheManeLand with the hashtag #AskTMLPC. Finally, we looked ahead to Saturday night's showdown at D.C. United, with key match-ups and predictions, and we're extremely amped about next Wednesday's rematch with Tigres. Stay safe and enjoy the show! Here's how No. 329 went down: 0:15 - Celebrating a shutout win for the second straight year and yet another opening day result for the Lions. Also celebrating a potential new deal for Torres. 36:09 - Haley Carter joins us to talk about her task of turning the Pride around, her thoughts on the current roster, and maybe a surprise is coming? 57:15 - The Pride won another preseason game and signed two more draft picks ahead of the 2023 season. 1:04:46 - Things we love: the mailbagbox, 5-star reviews on Apple Podcasts, and making predictions that will probably turn out to be horribly wrong. This week, it's all about the newbies! Both Orlando City and the Orlando Pride welcomed some new faces to the City Beautiful and we're here to talk about it. We started off with the news of Rodrigo Schlegel signing a new contract just one year after signing his last deal. Essentially, it potentially keeps the Argentine defender in Orlando for an additional year and he likely gets a bump in pay for services rendered. Hey, he earned it! Also on the MLS side, the Lions added two important cogs to the 2023 machine in U22 Initiative forward Romiro Enrique and box-to-box midfielder Dagur Dan Thorhallsson. While I was disappointed that “Dagur” doesn't mean “dagger” in Icelandic, his name is still pretty metal and fans can look forward to seeing the versatile player on the pitch this season. As far as Enrique is concerned, the Lions have obviously decided to go for young talent over experience in replacing departing forwards Alexandre Pato, Benji Michel, and Tesho Akindele. Moving to the Orlando Pride side, the team has a new boss. Haley Carter has the credentials as the club's new vice president of soccer operations and general manager. Now, we'll get to see how her experience translates to the position. Meanwhile, the Pride added goalkeeper Carly Nelson to replace 2022 starter Erin McLeod on the roster. And speaking of the roster, the Pride opened preseason camp and we went through all of the position groups. Finally, we looked in our mailbag and, surprisingly, it was empty. That almost never happens! We got to leave work early as a result. I guess I have more important things to worry about, like catching up on my watching of Game 6 of the Stanley Cup. For many years the players of the Afghanistan women's football team were seen as beacons of hope and empowerment in the country. Now they are in hiding and in fear for their lives. Haley Carter is the former assistant coach of the Afghan women's team and also a US Marine veteran. She is in daily contact with players and desperately trying to help them. Ahead of the Le Man's 24 hour race, we hear from Amanda Stretton who knows exactly what it takes to be part of one of the most iconic races in motor sport. As it turns out, her journey to the start line took as much endurance as the race itself. We hear from cricketer Nicole Harvey, who a year ago was hospitalised whilst pregnant. She had contracted sepsis and nearly died. A year on she has been one of the stars of the inaugural season of The Hundred. Plus ahead of the Paralympics we gather the presenters of BBC World Service podcast On The Podium, Paralympian Scout Basset, comedian Eliza Skinner and BBC athletic commentator Ed Harry to preview the event.
