Heeeey Sporkies, Dan and Jon are BACK after a brief (one month-ish) hiatus. Back with the basics, they talk a Finnish horror by way of Hatching, otherwise known as Pahanhautoja. A solid break into the horror scene from director Hanna Bergholm, what do they think of her debut film? Tune in and find out! Thank you for your continued support while we were away! Life got the better of us (specifically me, Dan) and I didn't want to put out a product that wasn't my best effort (I'm looking at you, The Reckoning) and so I thought it better to just take the step back and come back when I was completely ready. We hope you enjoy this first episode back and we're reading to tackle the summer together, Sporkies! Tove-elämäkertaelokuvasta kansainvälistäkin mainetta saanut ohjaaja Zaida Bergroth on nuorten naispuolisten elokuvatekijöiden idoli. Mikä on Bergrothin tyylin kulmakivet? Ohjelman juontajana on Pia-Maria Lehtola.
In which the Mister joins me in reviewing HATCHING (2022), currently available on Hulu. A strange and riveting horror story from writer/director Hanna Bergholm, the story touches on themes of mothers and daughters and "daughters" and children looking desperately for parental love and acceptance. Equally horrific and heartbreaking in some parts, this Finnish film is a MUST WATCH. The film has a run time of 1 h and 31 m and is unrated but we're going to say it's PG-13. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support

Don't let the subtitles turn you off. This is one of the best theatrical horror movie releases of the year. The Hatching will stay with you, especially if you were raised by a narcissist. (1:12) - Intro(4:51) - Synopsis(5:21) - Review(13:52) - Score(18:29) - Spoilers(1:28:19) - Taglines(1:32:57) - Interview with mystery cast member Artwork by Dustin Goebel @dgoebel00 on instagram Synopsis Finnish freshman director Hanna Bergholm heads this chilling talk of Tinja, a 12 year old gymnast and her toxic relationship with a giant bird person and her mother. What begins as a simple tale of hatching a mystical growing forest egg, twists into a disturbing metaphor for the traumatic metamorphosis caused by being raised by a Finnish Laura Dern. https://youtu.be/VtRNqe78x4o Review of Hatching (Pahanhautoja) I really liked this film. I went in with low expectations. The trailer featured some really corny acting, and set it up as a pretty arbitrary story of raising a monster. But it really delivers on an emotional and visceral level. You really have sympathy and pity on little Tinja as she desperately tries to makes sense of and manage forces way beyond her control. The themes throughout are vague enough to be interesting, but explicit enough to draw some connections. Toxic relationships, narcissism, puberty, eating disorders, and hidden lives are all themes that are explored pretty adeptly in a tight 1:27 runtime. The writing is really good, and develops the characters very well. Some of the lines are a little on the nose, but they are still believable in the context of a family that desperately is putting up the perfect façade under the command of a raging narcissist mother. Score 9/10

Lähes neljän miljoonan euron budjetillaan Pahanhautoja on kaikkien aikojen kallein suomalaisen naisohjaajan elokuva. Työryhmässä on ollut mukana kansainvälisiä huipputekijöitä, kuten muun muassa kaksinkertainen Oscar-ehdokas erikoismaskeeraussuunnittelija Conor O'Sullivan (Saving Private Ryan, The Dark Knight, Game of Thrones) ja Animatronic Designer Gustav Hoegen (Star Wars, Jurassic World). Elokuvan maailmanensi-iltana tapahtui Sundancen elokuvajuhlilla kriitikoiden hehkuttamana, jonka jälkeen Pahanhautoja matkasi Göteborgiin elokuvajuhliin. Arvostelut ovat olleet ylistäviä. Esimerkiksi Brittiläinen elokuvalehti Screendaily hehkuttaa elokuvaa rohkeaksi ja vangitsevaksi. Lehti nostaa esille ohjaaja Bergholmin ohella myös pääosaa näyttelevän Siiri Solalinnan, 12, debyyttiroolin, jota kuvaillaan häikäiseväksi (IS).
