The state motto of Arkansas is "Regnat populus" - Latin for "the people rule" - and you know what? The people here DO rule! Chris sits down with Hannah Baker, Sydney Byrd, LeeAnn Goette, and Kate Neal from Little Rock Zoo to talk about all the fun training going on during Chris' 10-day consulting stint, the ways we've all learned to help build (and avoid degrading) trust with animals, fun stuff coming up for the zoo in the near future, and the awesomeness of pouched rats. Slide on those cowboys boots and “get in the mood” for some Texas glam, as we spin our spurs with Hannah Baker Goodin, Director of Branding for Oak View Group's Moody Center in Austin, Texas. With a reputation of some of the best guest, artist, and tour experiences in the country, Hannah walks us through the unique structure of having a branding department and the emphasis and payoff they have seen from putting so much focus on that side. We get into the [tumble]weeds and walk through their process from when a show is booked to through the show day and how her and her team balance and prioritize events, research extensively, and put a lot of thought into creating memorable moments at each show. Learn about Moody Center's artist experience and gifting letter, which is sent to tours to set expectations and make sure all are aware of the full rollout the venue will be offering. Learn about some of their most memorable guest experience setups – from a shipping container transformed into an album-inspired photo activation for Harry Styles's residency to a custom VW bug for people to pose with at the Jonas Brothers concert. Hannah also tells us about success they've had with crew gifting, and how important it is to show appreciation for them, which sometimes means more to artists than a gift. We also talk about unique artist gifts that blew artists away (like one leading to a handwritten note from The Boss) and others that fell flat but served as great learning experiences. Enjoy this fun, creativity-inspiring episode that's packed full of great tips, career advice, and Tulsa-meets-Texas charm.Hannah Baker Goodin: Facebook | Instagram | LinkedInMoody Center: Facebook | Twitter/X | Instagram

Mark and I sat together with Keali'i (Kelly) and Hannah Baker for much longer than just the interview. They are so good for each other. Together they are building a wonderful life centered on their testimonies of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Kelly knows that the Atonement of Jesus Christ can change hearts, minds, and bodies. Before he went on his mission, he had never really read the Book of Mormon. After time lost, he finally read it--in six days! That experience ensured his testimony of that scripture. He talks about how his heritage has given him a purpose. And I really loved his explanation of what it means to be a member of the Tribe of Israel--stick around for that. Kelly is the type of person you want in your life because of his attitude, love, and strength.
Thirteen Reasons Why is a young adult novel written by Jay Asher in 2007 that follows the story of Hannah Baker, a high school freshman, and the thirteen reasons why she commits suicide. Following her death, Hannah leaves behind 7 double-sided cassette tapes detailing the 13 specific people and events that she blames for her demise. Two weeks after her death, these cassette tapes are mailed out with directions to pass the tapes on to the next person on the tape. Hannah's life story is conveyed through these tapes, which are narrated by Hannah herself, and through the point of view of Clay, her classmate and the ninth person to receive the tapes. The inspiration behind the main character, Hannah Baker, comes from author Jay Asher's close relative who attempted suicide. Since the novel's publication in 2007, Thirteen Reasons Why has received much recognition. As of 2014 Thirteen Reasons Why had been a New York Times bestseller for over 3 years and published in multiple countries. The novel's success has also been met with backlash, becoming the third-most banned book in the United States between 2010 and 2019. Additionally, in March 2017 a Netflix original series was released based on the book.

Asking Better Questions (0:00:00) Questions are the key to making connections. And, no matter how good or bad we think we are we can always get better at asking questions. Here to help us out we've invited Roi Ben-Yehuda onto the show. He's a professor of conflict resolution at both Columbia University and John Jay College and a leadership trainer at LifeLabs Learning. Vintage Homes Finds (0:31:53) We all have that one friend. The friend whose home is filled with beautiful and unique pieces that he or she bought at some random thrift store or flea market for a song. However, on the other end of the spectrum, is the person who walks into thrift store only to leave an hour later empty-handed and wondering how on earth person #1 does it. I don't know about you, but I want to learn to be more like person #1. Fortunately for us, friend of the show Carrie Ann Rhodes is here to teach us how. The Work from Home Shift (0:52:45) When we all moved online for work back in March, none of us knew that we were in for months of working from home. And while a few things have been re-opening, millions of Americans are still pulling the 9-to-5 on their laptops. While it did have it's challenges in the beginning, as we work towards getting used to the new normal, what have we learned, what will change in the future and what will stay the same? Here to share her insight with us is environmental psychologist Kati Peditto. Becoming a Morning Person (1:15:15) As much as sleeping in till 1 pm might be ideal for you, the real world doesn't often allow us such luxuries. Work, school, and other responsibilities demand that we get out of bed before or shortly after the sun rises. So how is the night owl supposed to survive when the early bird gets the worm? Joining us today to teach us how anyone can become a morning person is Dr. Chris Winter, a renowned neurologist and sleep specialist. ACT Prep (1:24:30) For many of you with teenagers, I'm sure the thought of getting your child into college and then paying for itis enough to keep you up at night, cause chest pain, and turn your hair grey. However, you can reduce some of this stress by properly preparing your kids for the ACT and SAT. Not only will preparation secure your kids' acceptance into college, but it could also lead to scholarships and thousands of dollars in savings. Here to help us know how we can help our kids prepare for college-entrance exams, we have Hannah Baker from Magoosh—a test-prep organization dedicated to “helping students achieve their educational dreams.”
Roi Ben Yehuda teaches how to ask better questions, Carrie Ann Rhodes explains how to redecorate for cheap, Kati Peditto gives working from home tips, Chris Winter teaches how to become a morning person, Hannah Baker discusses ACT prep.
We finally hit triple digits baby! In honor of our 100th episode, we had no choice but to walk the halls of Liberty High School one last time. Thirteen Reasons Why is more than a guilty pleasure show. It's one of the few remaining C&D Classics (Thank You Miss Rona and Miss Netflix). This week we rewatched season 1 to see if our perspectives had changed for the often dramatic, sometimes problematic, live and in stereo queen herself. That's right, Hannah Baker welcome to your episode. We went through each culprit's tape and discussed their reactions to their wrongdoings and gave a final verdict on whether or not they deserved to be a part of Hannah's final collection of cassettes. We sympathize and criticize to form a worst - to ehhh list of the reasons that led Hannah to her demise. Thanks for sticking with us! Which fictional high school do you belong to? This week's Awful and Awesome has Abhinandan and Rajyasree finally lavishing some praise on a film. There are a few trailers, an online series and a commercial to wrap up this episode, and Rajyasree talks about the “grandest wedding in town” as well.Deadpool 2 replaces the otherwise promised review of High Jack (sorry listeners!) Directed by David Leitch and starring Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool 2 is a superhero movie “for adults” that hit the cinemas this week.Abhinandan says: “I was curious to see what is a superhero film for adults”. He feels it is “brilliantly written”. Rajyasree, while admiring Reynolds, talks about the quirkiness of Deadpool 2 which comes from the “cracks about superheroes” in the movie itself. Abhinandan adds that the “opening credits were hysterically funny”. Rajyasree “loved the music in Deadpool”, while Abhinandan recommends it and calls it a “most satisfying film”.Next up, the trailer of Race 3 gets hysterical reception from Abhinandan and Rajyasree. Directed by Remo D'Souza, the movie will star Bobby Deol, among others. Rajyasree sounds almost petrified when she says, “Bobby Deol is back and he is bare-chested!” Abhinandan feels it is the “shittiest trailer… I hope they make Rs 20”.Moving on “from the sublime to the ridiculous and back to the normal”, the trailer of Bohemian Rhapsody seems promising. The film is a biography of Queen singer Freddie Mercury and stars Rami Malek. Rajyasree says: “It's amazing how much they've made him look like Freddie Mercury.” Abhinandan mentions, “Growing up, I have loved Queen's music, but no I've not been a fan of Freddie Mercury… I was underwhelmed by the trailer”.Another trailer that Rajyasree really likes is of Bhavesh Joshi: Superhero starring Anil Kapoor's son, Harsh Vardhan Kapoor, who made his debut in Mirziya. It is a “vigilante drama” revolving around a group of boys “who keep seeing things happening around them” and finally decide to take the law into their own hands.Abhinandan approves of the trailer and says “definitely makes you want to watch the film”. Rajyasree adds, “it does look like a cool film”. While she seems impressed by Harsh Vardhan, Abhinandan comments, “every time he opens his mouth, he says something so stupid… just pipe down ya”.The trailer of Mowgli by Andy Serkis wins praise from both Abhinandan and Rajaysree. Abhinandan thinks “it was spectacular” while Rajyasree talks about Serkis' intention to make a dark version of The Jungle Book. Rajyasree adds that it's “spectacularly shot”. Abhinandan, however, talks about how The Jungle Book has “worked in every avatar of its making” and that Hollywood remakes on the original story could jeopardise this film. Moving on to what's new on Netflix, 13 Reasons Why (Season 2) has been aired. The show revolves around Hannah Baker who commits suicide because she is bullied in school. Rajyasree informs us that it is a “very popular show, based on a book by Jay Asher”.The great "Royal Wedding" of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle caught Rajyasree's attention over the weekend. She says: “More than 29 million Americans tuned in to watch them getting married”. She also joked about the large number of security personnel present at the wedding. “If a terrorist attack had happened, they would have been able to get rid of half of the British entertainment industry and Oprah Winfrey and the others,” she adds. Finally, a “spectacular commercial” called “Who stole the cup” concludes the agenda of the day. Rajaysree says “it's a UK production” starring the legends of football. The ad is about a betting site, which Rajyasree could not figure out. Abhinandan asks her: “You didn't know about the product watching the ad, does that mean it's a good ad or a shit ad?”All this and much more. Listen up.
It's been a while, but we're back with a new direction for the Axis podcast! You'll be seeing one episode a week of The Culture Translator Podcast starting now plus the occasional "in-betweenisode!" This week...there are, as always, 3 things to know: The Boy Scouts are dropping the gendered title to simply be called "The Scouts." Their statement says, simply that this is because the character development emphasized by The Scouts is relatable and necessary for anyone, regardless of gender. They began admitting girls last year, so this should come as no surprise. It has ignited a fierce debate politically and socially, though, as you can imagine. With such a controversial change, this is a great opportunity to enter into conversation with your teen! It could open up topics such as inclusivity and gender. No matter where the conversation goes, try inviting your teen to share their thoughts first. Some of the trademarks of GenZ include acceptance and openness to other idea. “Scout Me In” reveals a glimpse into the world GenZ-ers often find themselves in! Wanna dive in deeper? Netflix released the date, May 18th, of Season 2 along with a new promo video. The video is already filling fans heads with intrigue and preparing them for the episodes to come. If you missed the first season, the show follows the story of a girl named Hannah Baker who died by suicide. It was a widely popular show as well as one that is extremely graphic as it unapologetically depicts the struggles many high schoolers face including suicide, rape, abuse, drinking, drugs, loneliness, etc. Many people who followed the series praised it highlighting real issues. Teens found themselves identifying with certain characters and seeing some of their stories played out on a screen, albeit a bit magnified, hopefully. However, it wasn’t adored by all - many spoke out against the ways they talked about these all too prevalent issues. Netflix listened. For season 2 they are adding warning videos and extra precautions to help eliminate negative effects while still maintaining the riskiness of the show. So do your research! If your student has seen season 1 - discuss it! Who did they identifiy with? What parts of the show did they agree with and feel encouraged by? And if they want to watch season 2, maybe watch it with them. You can then monitor the graphicness while engaging in their world! The show talks about issues that are one way or another in the world of your teen (maybe not directly) but we encourage that you enter that conversation! Keep diving: https://virtual.axis.org/suicide https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/13-reasons-why-season-2-address-suicide-controversy-warning-video-1096070 https://13reasonsresearch.soc.northwestern.edu/index.html A new app was released and is gaining popularity: Discord. It is a free multi-platform app that lives in the gamer world. It is a voice and text-chat app designed to bring gamers together in community. The designers were inspired by the ways video games used to build community and saw a need for connection and created one! We are excited about the ways this encourages teens to not just live in a reality they created by themselves but rather to build connections in the real world. Win! But with any kind of app where you can chat and text, there is the possibility of inappropriate material to be shared. So - check out the app. See what you think and if you teen has it you can find solutions for the dangers. Encourage them to utilize Discord only when you are present or have access to it so you can be aware of what is being shared! As always, we desire for connection and relationships to be built out of these cultural happenings. People were jazzed and flooded the theaters and sold out the seats. The long awaited build up of this film [ahem - 18 Marvel films later] did not disappoint. The movie achieved over a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has remained extremely popular. Yet throughout the fight scenes and the uniting of all of your favorite characters (no spoilers, don’t worry) - there was an intriguing depiction of the Gospel woven throughout. Or perhaps a better way to explain the message in this movie are through the words ‘mercy’ and ‘sacrifice.’ The main “villain” Thanos exemplifies a certain definition of these two words that lives in contrast to how the Avengers live those out. And honestly different from the way Christ lived these out in His own life. What a great place to start a conversation with your teen while meeting them in what they love! She took her own life minutes after apparently naming an ex-boyfriend she said had raped her before publishing pictures of the act on Snapchat, the image-sharing application, France Info reported. "Analysis of the telephone and recovery of the video are underway," said a judicial source, adding that the dead girl had "allegedly identified an assailant" during the video before committing suicide. For this next episode, we are going to discuss the trending Netflix show, '13 Reasons Why'. I am not here to critque the show, but to continue the conversation the show has started. I am joined with Blake Barber, House Supervisior of the CSP (Community Services Program) Laguna Beach Youth Shelter and Juliet Ekinaka, a former youth counselor at the shelter to discuss signs of depression, suicde, risk factors in teens, triggering events and how to prepare parents, educators and friends to be a good lister for when they ask the powerful question, R U OK? A recap of 13 Reasons Why: A box of cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, a 17-year- old student at liberty high school before her suicide details 13 reasons why she completed suicide. It is somewhat like a murder mystery, captivating the viewers attention through the 13th and final episode. At its core, it exposes what today's teens experience; drug and alcohol use, gender confusion, self- harm, bullying, rape, depression and suicide. It was not easy for me to watch and left me disturbed for several days after watching the final episode. But I do feel 13 reasons why is very important and I am grateful to Netflix for shedding light on a very stigmatized subject. Listen! As mentioned in the podcast, we talk about #13ReasonsWhyNot I say these 13 Reasons Why Not to you because I have been on the other side of suicide. I was the one left behind, the one still living with this choice my husband decided. 1. It's a permanent solution to a temporary problem 2. You have depression, which is an illness and treatable 3. Depression is a liar. You wouldn't give someone who lied to you the time of day, so why give a liar your life. 4. It's not your fault. What ever you are going through, it's not your fault. 5. Things can change. What you are feeling isn't permanent. The first step to any change is making the decision to ask for help. 6. You matter. To your family, to the people whose life you have touched. 7. You are loved. It may not feel like so, but when you have depression, it's hard to let any outside affection in, but it's there, a lot of it. 8. There is help. Suicide has affected so many lives, and because so, there are many amazing resources for all ages to get the care and hope they need to heal. 9. You are not alone. The way you feel is your own, but so many also feel the same pain. Knowing you're not alone can help ease the decision to get help. 10. You will feel whole and healthy again. I know this because I have seen it in action. When you choose the path to heal, a new world of possibilities open up for you. 11. Relief is around the corner. No one likes to feel alone. No one likes to feel nothing at all. With help, there is hope for such relief of numbness. 12. Time is on your side. What's great about the choice to heal, is that you can take your time. Heal on your own terms. You are in the ultimate control and that is motivating and powerful. 13.You are incredible. You may have laughed at this, but you are. Unique, real, alive and have the strength to take control and seek the help and hope you deserve. If you or your teen needs more information, resources or immediate help, please know it's available! In this episode, Dr. Serani, psychologist, author and depression expert and Dr. Owens, cognitive psychologist with expertise in suicide prevention, discuss the Netflix Series, “13 Reasons Why.” The series tells the fictional story of Hannah Baker, a teen who dies by suicide and leaves behind 13 tapes revealing the 13 reasons she ends her life. The show has caught the interest of teens as well as parents and professionals. Drs. Serani and Owens consider both the benefits and dangers of the series for teens. They recognize the needed attention the series brings to teen suicide; but raise concerns with dramatizations and omissions relative to suicide, depression, mental illness and treatment. They discuss how Hannah and the high school students are depicted, as well as the ways in which school personnel and parents respond in the series. Finally, they suggest ways for parents, teachers and young people to use this series as a starting point for addressing the tragedy of teen suicide.
This week, we share our "13 Reasons Why" debate from Playlist Live with special guests Kati Morton and Lisa Filipelli. Where did the show succeed, but also fail? Was the graphic visual of Hannah Baker's suicide just a ploy to get attention? We also explain why we're frustrated with the depiction of mental health treatment and school counselors, why this show panders to vulnerable teens, and where to get help if you're struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts. There are resources and people that will help you, so stay strong and know that there is hope. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem - but much better solutions are out there too. Hey Duhmericana Listeners, This week, we embark on a topic that has been buzzing all over the web this past month: “Welcome to your tape.” Netflix released a 13-part series titled “13 Reasons Why,” based off the book of the same title by Jay Asher, released in 2007. Please be warned: this blog post and subsequent podcast episode deals with certain triggers regarding teen suicide and mental health. Wilx read the book when it was released, and Netflix picking up the series brought it once again to the forefront of current conversations. The show deals with the suicide of teen Hannah Baker, who recorded and delivered 13 tapes dedicated to people she felt contributed to her reasons for committing suicide. The story is narrated from the perspective of her close friend and romantic interest Clay Jensen. Though the show was intended to bring to light the topic of teen suicide and mental health (an intention also expressed by singer and actress Selena Gomez, Executive Producer), we can’t help but wonder if this might have been a misguided attempt that causes more harm than good. We grapple with the sentiment that it brings it to light, yet does so in a twisted sort of revenge fantasy that doesn’t succinctly depict that Hannah Baker, or anyone who commits suicide with revenge in mind, will never get the comeuppance intended. Does 13 Reasons Why glamorize teen suicide? Ultimately, it’s still using it as a form of entertainment and ultimately, profit. What do you think? Did you read the book and/or watch the series? What redeeming qualities can be found in a show of this kind? Sound off below! As always, please don’t forget to rate and review. You have no idea how much it truly means to us! _______ We can all help prevent suicide. 13 Reasons Why is the new Netflix series based on Jay Asher’s book revolving around Hannah Baker, a teenager who commits suicide. Unlike so many suicides where we never know the whys, Hannah left behind tapes where she detailed the 13 reasons, and those responsible, for her taking her own life. The series follows Clay Jensen, who receives the box of tapes and proceeds to listen to them, one episode at a time, trying to piece together what happened. We will be going into spoilers for this episode, so please come back to us if you have not already completed the show. We discuss the themes the show presents and why think the series is resonating with so many people. Was it right for her to assign blame in this way, did all of these characters deserve this? Clay Jenson and Dylan Minnette’s portrayal He seemed to be on a crusade for justice, while these tapes crushed him emotionally. Was that fair or too much for Hannah to put this on him? Where the hell did Tony keep coming from, does he ever actually attend class? Remaining standouts from the characters / cast Do you feel like it accurately captured mental health issues such as depression and suicide appropriately, some people feel very strongly both ways? Rumors, cyber shaming and bullying, rape. This was a lot for one person to endure, was it a fair representation of the modern teenage existence? If this were real, and I feel like so many people are treating it like it is, what could Hannah Baker have done differently? Would one person make a difference like her tapes implies? How the season ends / loose threads 13. Do you want another season, if so, how would you want to see it?
