If you had to reflect on your life, what would be your defining moment? For Harper Spero, it was walking in NYC one day and, out of the blue, being unable to breathe. Harper has a rare Immunodeficiency called hyper IGE syndrome (there are only 300 people diagnosed in the world) and, after a life-altering surgery, decided to change the entire trajectory of her career. "The doctor said, 'You have a cyst the size of a golf ball in your right lung, and you need surgery immediately to remove it.' Everything about my life is before that call and after that call. It was such a defining moment." After the surgery, Harper realized that she needed to prioritize her health and mental well-being, which led her to leave her job in the beauty industry and explore other career options. She eventually found a job with a boss who prioritized personal development and wellness, which gave her the accommodations she needed to take care of herself. It was that role and a chance meeting that would lead to her discovering her love of coaching. After completing her certification in 2014 to become a professional coach, today Harper supports solopreneurs and small business owners in brainstorming, launching, and building their businesses. She is often referred to as the external COO/CMO of her client's businesses. In 2018, after years of not finding content related to her rare condition that resonated with her, Harper launched Made Visible, a podcast that amplifies the stories of people living with or affected by invisible illness. In 2020, she began facilitating writing classes for the Made Visible community to give them a safe place to share, feel more seen and heard, and learn from established authors. She is working with companies to create content, community, and inclusivity amongst employees living with invisible illnesses to have and experience support from their employers. In this episode, Harper and I discuss what it means to have health get in the way of a career and why it's imperative to prioritize and advocate for yourself in the workplace. We also dive into Harper's superior skills in making authentic connections, writing a compelling pitch, how she never fails to meet a deadline or a follow-up, and so much more.

On this episode of Financially Naked: Stories from The Financial Gym, our host is Myriam Robinson, Brooklyn-based Financial Trainer, and she is joined by Harper Spero, business coach, to talk about business coaching for small businesses. Harper was born and raised in New York and spent the first 10 years of her career in marketing, events, PR, and digital media. She kept changing jobs trying to find something bigger and better with higher pay.  Almost every August Harper realized she was unhappy with her job and by October she was in a new job. She did this eight times. In 2012, Harper was on medical leave for several months, due to a health crisis, and she realized the job she was in was not right for her. From there, she went to work for a small event production company, where she produced events for non-profits and health and wellness brands.  There were only four people at the company and Harper felt like they were making a big impact. She knew this would be her last job before she became an entrepreneur.  After two years at that job, Harper enrolled in a nine-month coaching training program, because being a mentor and accountability buddy came naturally to her. In 2014, Harper was able to freelance for her company while she launched her own business. She started as a life coach and then pivoted toward career transition coaching. A life coach is interested in moving you forward versus digging into the past like a therapist. A career coach is going to help you identify where you are in your career, what's working, what isn't working, what are the roadblocks, if is there a ceiling and how do you break that ceiling, etc. They are there to support you along the way and figure out what needs to be done to get your career to the next level. Harper helps people develop their business idea, launch that business, and build that business. She has worked with clients in all phases of their businesses and is their accountability partner. In January 2020, Harper decided to offer coaching in a group setting. This allows business owners to not only work with her but also to have a network of other people to brainstorm with and ask questions because regardless of the type of business, all responsibilities of running a business are on the entrepreneur. Success does not happen overnight. It is important to think through a long-term strategy and understand that you may need to pivot over time. As you learn your demographic, you will better understand how to serve their needs. It is valuable to have a coach to guide you through this both for accountability and for the loneliness you may experience. Entrepreneurs need to have a lot of motivation and drive, and it is important to know what you are willing to do yourself and what you should outsource. Passion for your product or service is also necessary. Everyone's version of success is different, and it is important to evaluate this as you go so you stay on track.  It is important to say yes to a lot of things when you get started. Later, it is important to figure out if what you are doing is something that drives your business forward.    Random Three Questions What is your favorite app on your phone? Beach or mountains? Topics discussed in this episode:Being diagnosed at 10 years old with a mystery skin condition.Spending your teenage years covered in boils, warts and having your fingernails falling off whilst at school. Having a failing immune system and constant bouts of pneumonia at 11 years old.Being so self-conscious at school about having your arms or any skin on show it became normal to cover up - even when in fancy dress costume. Being told at 27 to have surgery to remove a cyst the size of a GOLF BALL in your lung then being told by another doctor not to have the surgery because you might die. Finally being diagnosed with Job's syndrome* or hyper-IgE syndrome a rare autoimmune deficiency typically occurring in people creating skin and lung issues, also dental issues. Finding a quality research hospitalHaving a lobectomy to remove ¼ of her right lung - even though it was risky and doctors were afraid to.Harper never shared anything with her friends until it was time to have surgery, leave work for a few months Harper didn't find a community of people for some time but when she did she said it was so incredibly helpful and she wished she found them sooner. Treatment for Harper include daily oral drugs, a nebulizer and every two weeks, an injection. These all help with the functioning of her lungs. What's the best, worst piece of unhelpful advice you've ever been given? Does a diet specific to your blood type really help with my condition that you know nothing about? What is the most annoying thing about having an invisible illness? Probably that it's invisible. No one gets it. Is it right to self advocate and go against doctors advice when it doesn't feel right to us?Are meds to override symptoms worth the side effects?Entrepreneurship. Recurrent infections are common in people with this condition. Affected individuals tend to have frequent bouts of pneumonia, which are caused by certain kinds of bacteria that infect the lungs and cause inflammation. Inflammation is a normal immune system response to injury and foreign invaders (such as bacteria). However, excessive inflammation can damage body tissues. Recurring pneumonia often results in the formation of air-filled cysts (pneumatoceles) in the lungs. Frequent skin infections and an inflammatory skin disorder called eczema are also very common in AD-HIES. These skin problems cause rashes, blisters, accumulations of pus (abscesses), open sores, and scaling. For unknown reasons, people with AD-HIES have abnormally high levels of an immune system protein called immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the blood. IgE normally triggers an immune response against foreign invaders in the body, particularly parasitic worms, and is involved in allergies. However, IgE is not needed for these roles in people with AD-HIES, and it is unclear why affected individuals have such high levels of the protein without having allergies.AD-HIES also affects other parts of the body, including the bones and teeth. Many people with AD-HIES have skeletal abnormalities such as an unusually large range of joint movement (hyperextensibility), an abnormal curvature of the spine (scoliosis), reduced bone density (osteopenia), and a tendency for bones to fracture easily. A common dental abnormality in this condition is th

I only came to that realization once I started talking about my own illness, which I hid for many years. Talking about my story was so freeing. I wanted others to have that experience too.
