As you know, no two dieters are the same and we all have different challenges, backgrounds, habits, lifestyles, and dieting struggles. And more specifically in Nicolette's case, a history with an eating disorder. Fortunately, she was kind enough to open up and share her story in the hopes of helping you. Topics discussed:   Why Nicolette decided to join the program and how it turned out to be exactly what she needed to stop bouncing up and down the scale….and stop the cycle of disordered eating for good. Nicolette shares some of her biggest challenges in the program and how letting go of the good and bad food labeling was the breakthrough she didn't know she needed. At what point in the process she witnessed her relationship with food beginning to shift and how she's been able to overcome her self-limiting beliefs and history of self-sabotage. Nicolette also discusses why this process was more effective than her history in therapy. Her best piece of advice for those who fear gaining weight if they stop dieting, and why confronting this fear is essential for long-term success. Thanks again to Nicolette for being a guest and sharing her valuable insights. Be sure to give this episode a listen and let us know what topics you'd like us to cover in the future. Glenn Livingston, Ph.D. is a veteran psychologist and long-time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm that has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio, or UPN TV. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food-obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his journey from obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. Takeaways & Reflections | Our Food Relationship & Eating Our Feelings

What is your relationship with food? Would you say it's healthy? Does it leave you often feeling shameful? Does the self-critic lurk out from the shadows after you've eaten something that isn't deemed "healthy?"I know I've left a drive-thru at times wondering why on earth I ever stopped, as I just feel like physical crap after eating something I know isn't serving me. Perhaps that is my intuition and my inner-knowing saying "I told you so!" Or, perhaps it's neither good nor bad; rather these are labels that, as a society, we've placed on food? Either way, shame is often a large part of our food relationship. We often "eat our feelings," as the saying goes (which seems to be a buzz phrase nowadays), and then feel shameful for doing so. We may then eat, even more, bingeing and stuffing, only to feel like physical crap later or, as my guest from last week's podcast shared, develop an eating disorder. Our food relationship starts in childhood. Whether you were forced to clean your plate, food was used as a reward, you grew up with food insecurity, food was part of a punishment, or became a means of control in body image - I guarantee that many of the patterns of behavior that existed with food in childhood, still exist in your adulthood. At the root of it, however, is grief. I don't think this is a topic talked about as it relates to grief. So, I'm happy to share this week's episode and, I encourage you to listen to last week's episode as well. I will be talking about this again this fall with a therapist who struggled with an eating disorder as well. We dive into the topic of food and kids more in that episode coming up. Stay tuned! In the meantime, after you listen to this week's episode, I encourage you to give some thought to how you feel about food and your relationship with it. Is it a means to survive or is it a means to thrive? Anorexia nervosa: an eating disorder characterized by attempts to lose weight to the point of starvation. Hannah believed she was destined to suffer in silence. Her obsession with food, body image, and a strive for perfection began in middle school. She was always the tallest in her class and developed early on as well. Hannah would go through periods of starving herself followed by an episode of bingeing. This went on through college and into her 20s when she finally "got sick and tired of being sick and tired." One email to an author led to learning about a support group for those who are struggling with an eating disorder. This group opened her up to support, and a sense of community that aided her in dismantling the shame that had consumed her for so many years. Years later, and married, it was a miscarriage that taught @hannahmhoward how to have compassion for herself in a way she hadn't fully practiced. One book, email, a phone call -- action, can change your entire life.  Now 10 years into recovery, Hannah learned and wants to share that you're not alone, and going through challenges alone doesn't help with shame, if anything, it perpetuates it. We all have a relationship with food, whether we have an eating disorder or not. And, like grief, there are so many ways we are misinformed and there are false beliefs we have been raised with that shape the rest of our lives.CONNECT:WebsiteInstagramBook, Plenty______NEED HELP?National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255Crisis Text Line provides free, 24/7 support via text message. Lisa Lewtan published the award-winning and best-selling book Busy, Stressed, and Food Obsessed! and went on to host a live radio show called Healthy View Radio (now a podcast called The Healthy View). Recently, she studied in one of the first classes to receive certification as a Designing Your Life coach, based on the NY Times bestselling book and class by Stanford University professors Bill Burnett and Dave Evans. Lisa also received a certification in teaching Mindfulness. Her work has been featured in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, MindbodyGreen, and Reader’s Digest, and has been a speaker at companies such as Kripalu, Canyon Ranch, Rancho la Puerta, WGBH, and Google. In this episode, Lisa opens up about her sugar addiction. After cutting sugar, Lisa thought she would lose a ton of weight; however, that did not happen. Instead, Lisa found positive changes after cutting sugar - she finally felt calm and relaxed. So, Lisa ended up developing a program to help other people get off of sugar. There are loads of people out there who struggle with it! Lisa isn’t sure why sugar will profoundly impact one person and not the other. Many people won’t know that they have a sugar problem. Lisa can look at what somebody eats throughout the day and immediately know if they have a sugar problem or not. When people start realizing the reason they crash is because of their diet, Lisa steps in. Lisa helps people tweak their eating habits, and she can assist with cutting out sugar completely. Sugar is often an emotional connection, that’s why it is so difficult for people to kick the habit. RXBARs are popular in the paleo community because there are only a few ingredients. However, some of their bars have well over twenty grams of sugar in it. You need to be careful with anything that is going to keep the cravings going. Lisa ended up cutting bars out altogether from her diet – it’s just not worth the cravings she gets later on. Then, Lisa speaks about how to break the emotional connection to sugar. We aren’t addressing the emotions that people have when they are addicted to sugar. Lisa says that when we stop tasting sugar, we can recalibrate our taste buds. Plus, Lisa wants to say that sugar addiction has nothing to do with will power. Once you take the break from sugar, you will realize that you don’t even need it anymore. Lisa explains the strategies for cutting sugar. Instead of cutting all of the sugar, Lisa says to stay with the dark chocolate and cut everything else. It will be impossible to reduce the sugar if you don’t want to give it up. There has to be a reason why you want to cut the sugar. Usually, people will endure a health scare, or people realize that they just feel crappy. Then, they decide it is time to ditch the sugar train. If you are going to have sugar, then sit there, love it, and enjoy it. We want to get to the point where we aren’t beating ourselves up about it. When we have a break from sugar, we choose what we are going to eat. When we feel good, we don’t need to beat ourselves up anymore. This is really hard to do when you’re still eating sugar. Stay tuned as Lisa reveals tips for giving up sugar quickly. Calling all those who have ever felt busy, stressed or food obsessed – this podcast is for you! Today I'm speaking with Health & Lifestyle Coach and author of the award winning book, “Busy, Stressed, and Food Obsessed!” - Lisa Lewtan. She shares wonderful insight into the correlation between being busy and stressed and how it can impact our eating habits. We discuss the importance of recognizing and understanding some of the emotional triggers and habits that lead us to food for pleasure as well as the ability to work past these feelings through meditation and thought control.   Through private coaching, online courses, workshops, and retreats, Lisa helps highly successful hungry go-getters to slow down, chill-out, develop a better relationship with food and stress, look good, and feel great. She has been featured in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, The Huffington Post, MindbodyGreen, and Better After 50, and has been a speaker at companies such as Canyon Ranch and Google.   “We're using “busyness” to hide other things about ourselves. We tend to define ourselves by the things we are doing rather than just who we are.” – Lisa Lewtan   On Today's Episode of A Healthy Curiosity:   Are we wearing our “busyness” as a badge of honor? Being aware of the language around the word busy. Balancing the “have-tos,” the “wanna-dos” and the “shoulds.” How the stress of being busy can lead to food obsession. In a fight or flight situation, where do we flee to mentally? Do we really know what it feels like to be biologically hungry? The process and benefits of interrupting habits. How does stress, worry and self-doubt relate to self-love?     Key Takeaway: So many times when we think we're hungry, we're really not – we're just not present with where we are. Why are we so busy? Do we have to be busy? Do we want to be busy? Do we feel like we should be busy?     Connect with Lisa Lewman: http://www.healthyhappyandhip.com/ Get Our Self-Care Manifesto You have the right to take care of yourself. Are you eating because you're hungry? Or, are your cravings taking over your body?A study out of the University of California-Davis found that "eating "mindfully" and cultivating a heightened awareness to the body's signals when you crave certain foods decreases emotional eating. You can win your internal battle with emotional eating by paying attention to what you eat as you're eating, how it makes you feel, and realizing when you're eating to satisfy a hunger, a habit, or an unsatisfied emotion. Why does this matter? Anyone battling binge eating, sugar cravings, or other types of emotional eating can attest to the difficulty of breaking free from overeating patterns. We become side-tracked by day-to-day life in a non-stop world that makes us live in our heads and ignore our bodies. This means you miss vital clues to your well-being. You stifle many of your physical and emotional needs with your go-to quick fix: food. By objectively investigating your food cravings, looking for the underlying reasons of our "hunger," noticing how certain foods make you feel, and more, you can discover a new perspective and a way to break old eating habits.Lisa Lewtan, Founder of Healthy, Happy & Hip and author of Busy, Stressed, and Food Obsessed, joins host Lisa Davis to share how you can start to loosen the grip your cravings have on you.

Learning to have a healthier relationship with food is learning to better understand yourself and find the right balance that works for you. The problem with an all-or-nothing approach to healthy eating is that it's not sustainable. The goal is to feel good and to appropriately deal with stress. Rather than labeling foods as good or bad, think about them as “more often” and “less often.” Putting a negative connotation on our food choices only fuels the fire of self-judgment and keeps us in that awful stress mode. Tell yourself: Success is not about perfection; it's about how many times I get back on track after falling off.  Lisa Lewtan is a Healthy Living Strategist and founder of HealthyHappyandHip.com, which provides one-on-one coaching, workshops, retreats, and support groups for clients. This week on A Taste of the Past, Linda welcomes Cindy Lobel to the program. Cindy is an assistant professor of history at Lehman College, a cultural historian with interests in urban development and consumer culture as well as the history of New York. Today she and Linda discuss her book, Urban Appetites: Food and Culture in Nineteenth-Century New York. Was New York City the first in the country to have a restaurant? What was the first restaurant to open in New York City? Surprisingly, it seems as though present day New York food scene is not so different than it was in the 1800s. Tune in as Cindy takes us through the beginnings of restaurants in New York City and how the now flourishing industry evolved through the years. This program has been sponsored by Cain Vineyard and Winery. “People think that New York was born with the Zagat Guide, and that of course is not the case… free standing restaurants have a history in New York.” [5:40] “The rise of restaurants is really tied to the growth of the city.” [8:10] — Cindy Lobel on A Taste of the Past
