Could the future of libraries as we've known them be completely different? Our guests this week say so. Megapublishers are suing the Internet Archive, perhaps best known for its Wayback Machine, to redefine e-books as legally different from paper books. A difference in how they are classified would mean sweeping changes for the way libraries operate. Brewster Kahle is a digital librarian at the Internet Archive. Kyle Courtney is a lawyer, librarian, director of copyright and information policy for Harvard Library. He's the co-founder of Library Futures, which aims to empower the digital future for America's libraries. They join to discuss what's animating the lawsuit, information as a public good and the consequences should the publishers ultimately prevail.
Send us a Text Message.Ranavalona I, Queen of Madagascar has a bad reputation, to say the least. Few biographical sources exist about her but they all make their opinions well known in the titles alone: "Ranavalona I: Reign of Terror,” “Female Caligula: Ranavalona the Mad Queen of Madagascar,” “The Terror of Queen Ranavalona I in Madagascar.” But, I see reason to question this reputation. Was Ranavalona really a bloodthirsty tyrant or was she simply a powerful woman determined to put a stop to European imperialism at a time when history was recorded almost exclusively by European imperialists. You'll learn how penicillin was discovered by accident and how its development was helped along by a moldy cantaloupe from a Peoria, Illinois farmers market. I'll also uncover how it went on to act as a secret weapon, helping the allied forces to victory during World War II. Plus I'm going to get real personal to share the tell all story of why my husband is physically disabled and suffering from chronic pain at the age of 35 from taking a particular type of antibiotic. Even for avid supporters of Ukraine, like me, Ukrainian literature remains and undiscovered country. Today I'm speaking with Uilleam Blacker who can guide on a journey of discovery, to engage with Ukrainian culture and identity. Ukrainian literature has a strong tradition of folk tales and oral poetry, and it has been influenced by the country's complex political and cultural history, including periods of colonization and national struggle. Russian literature, on the other hand, has been shaped by its own distinct history, including periods of imperial expansion and revolutionary upheaval. Ukrainian writers were persecuted in the 1920s during the period of Soviet rule in Ukraine, as part of a process to suppress Ukrainian national identity and culture and replace it with a new Soviet identity; literature was a key tool for this, as it is also for Russia today. ---------- Uilleam Blacker is an associate professor in the comparative culture of Eastern Europe at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College London. He is the author of Memory, the City, and the Legacy of World War II in East Central Europe (Routledge). He has translated the work of many Ukrainian authors, including Oleg Sentsov's short story collection Life Went On Anyway (Deep Vellum). His translations of novels by Taras Prokhasko and Maik Yohansen will be published in the Harvard Library of Ukrainian Literature series. His translations have appeared in many anthologies and journals, including The White Review, Modern Poetry in Translation, and Words Without Borders. ---------- LINKS: https://twitter.com/BlackerUilleam https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ssees/people/uilleam-blacker https://thebookerprizes.com/the-booker-library/judges/uilleam-blacker https://www.hup.harvard.edu/authors/65551-blacker-uilleam ---------- RECOMMENDED AUTHORS: Taras Shevchenko https://taras-shevchenko.storinka.org/ Nikolai Gogol Lesia Ukrainka https://www.hup.harvard.edu/books/9780674291775 Olha Kobylianska https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sunday-Morning-She-Gathered-Herbs/dp/1895571340 Mike Yohansen https://books.huri.harvard.edu/books/maik-yohansen-dr-leonardos-journey Mykhail Semenko Valerian Pidmohylnyi https://books.huri.harvard.edu/books/the-city Yuri Andrukhovych https://www.amazon.co.uk/Moscoviad-Yuri-Andrukhovych/dp/1933132523 Taras Prokhasko https://tarnawsky.artsci.utoronto.ca/elul/Ukr_Lit/Vol02/03-Prokhasko-Unsimple1.pdf and https://tarnawsky.artsci.utoronto.ca/elul/Ukr_Lit/Vol03/06-ProkhaskoUnsimple-Part-2.pdf Yuri Izdryk https://losthorsepress.org/catalog/smokes/ Viktoria Amelina https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jul/03/poem-about-a-crow-a-work-by-the-killed-ukrainian-writer-victoria-amelina War poetry (pre-2022): https://www.wordsforwar.com/ ---------- SUPPORT THE CHANNEL: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain https://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain ---------- TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND: Save Ukraine https://www.saveukraineua.org/ Superhumans - Hospital for war traumas https://superhumans.com/en/ UNBROKEN - Treatment. In Episode 140, Gen and Jette get to revisit one of their favourite books, Paper Houses, with the sequel, Pale Shadows. Dominique Fortier's follow-up to her reimagining of Emily Dickinson's life, traces the publication of Dickinson's poems after her death and the women who helped it happen. Obviously we loved this. It's time to add every Emily Dickinson collection to our reading lists. Show Notes We learned a lot about the process of readying Emily's poems for publication, which included removing dashes and deciding on which word Emily intended for the poem. There are several different collections with slightly different versions of the poems. The one being published in Pale Shadows was edited and transcribed by Mabel. A later edition was done by her daughter, Millicent. Shout out to Coach House Books for never steering us wrong. Paper Houses was the first book of theirs we ever read on the podcast. If you haven't listened yet, check out Episode 26 on Paper Houses. Emily Dickinson's Herbarium was also published and it has been digitized by Harvard Library for anyone to look through. In our next episode we'll be reading James Baldwin's essay collection, Notes of a Native Son. When farmer John Durfee found the body of a local factory girl hanging from a fence post on his property on the morning of December 21, 1832, he and the rest of the townspeople assumed she had died by suicide. But a cryptic note she had left among her possessions pointed the investigation in a different direction, and the ensuing murder trial captured the public imagination. Joining me now to discuss the murder of Maria Cornell and the shifting cultural milieu of New England in the 1830s is Dr. Bruce Dorsey, Professor of History at Swarthmore College and author of Murder in a Mill Town: Sex, Faith, and the Crime That Captivated a Nation.
On September 3, 1902, Theodore Roosevelt was riding in a carriage in Pittsfield when it was struck by a trolley. His Secret Service bodyguard was killed, and Roosevelt himself narrowly escaped serious injury. This episode explores the causes of the accident, the subsequent investigations and criminal charges, and also looks at the possible long-term effects of this accident. If you are interested in learning more, the sources for this episode included Edmund Morris's biography Theodore Rex, along with a number of contemporary newspaper articles. Among the most helpful of these were the September 4, 5, and 6 issue of the Springfield Republican, and the September 4 issue of the Boston Globe. For photographs of the accident scene, including the one used as the cover image for this episode, see the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, which is available online through the Harvard Library.

Bobbi Gibb is truly a Renaissance person. She is relentlessly curious. She is well versed in physics and law. And she is a stunning artist. In 1966, Bobbi became the first woman to to run the Boston Marathon. She had to sneak into the race (women weren't allowed) and she ran in her brother's bermuda shorts and a hoodie to disguise her sex. Women of the era were destined to marry and have children to econmically and socially survive. They weren't allowed in the Harvard Library. They weren't allowed in the Boston Marathon. The presence of a woman in any profession was a rarity. But this paradigm was ready for a change. And Bobbi in following her heart and her love of running, would be one of the people to change it. #BumpInTheRoad #Running #WomensSports #BobbiGibb

On this special edition of Anchored, Zuby–a rising public figure and influential rapper–joins Jeremy and Arooba to share his insights into how education has changed in the United States and the accessibility of education in the modern world. He discusses his time at Oxford, how the history and beauty of a student's environment can inspire them, how the quality of university education has changed, and some of the political biases that may be rooted in academia. The three of them go on to discuss the value of education, in an age where there is more information instantly available on our cell phones than there is in the Harvard Library. Regardless of whether someone attends college, Zuby argues, they must be able to use their knowledge in the real world.Host: Jeremy Tate @JeremyTate41Guest: Zuby @Zubymusic
