Have you ever wondered how much your body is telling you—and what you might be missing? Could looking at one more metric from your wearable device, like heart rate variability (HRV), unlock the secrets to better sleep, reduced stress, and improved overall health? In this episode of Salad with a Side of Fries, Jenn Trepeck welcomes Dr. Torkil Færø, a GP, emergency physician, author of The Pulse Cure, and advocate for the transformative power of wearables in health optimization. Torkil shares his journey of exploring devices like Whoop and Garmin to uncover hidden stressors, track heart rate variability (HRV), and make meaningful lifestyle changes that dramatically improve health. From understanding the connection between HRV and chronic stress to identifying surprising factors like late-night meals and alcohol that impact sleep and recovery, this conversation dives deep into how wearables can enhance our understanding of the body. Dr. Færø also discusses HRV's role in improving PMS symptoms, offers actionable advice for boosting HRV, and explains why personalized data is key to unlocking better health. The Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: [6:04] Dr. Færø explains why he began to focus on wearables[11:26] Humans can't sense our inner stress levels[14:55] Heart rate numbers are individual, and the connection between low heart rate and disease[23:34] Unexpected sources of stress and the sleep connection[29:21] How heart rate variability can improve PMS symptoms[32:45] Dr. Faero gives advice to see improvement in heart rate variabilityKEY TAKEAWAYS: HRV is a powerful tool for tracking stress and overall health. By using wearables to monitor HRV, individuals can learn how lifestyle choices—like diet, alcohol intake, and exercise—affect their bodies. A higher HRV typically reflects a restful, adaptive state, while a lower HRV may indicate chronic stress or other concerns. Notably, the focus is on individual patterns and baselines rather than comparing numbers with others, ensuring a personalized approach to health tracking.Wearables can uncover hidden stressors, like inflammatory foods or alcohol, that traditional medical training can overlook. By making informed changes, such as reducing alcohol intake, eating earlier dinners, and incorporating stress management techniques like breathwork or cold plunges. These tools serve as a modern extension of human senses, allowing users to “listen” to their bodies in ways evolution never equipped us for.Eating late or consuming alcohol can lower heart rate variability (HRV), resulting in less restorative sleep, even if total sleep hours are unchanged. To improve sleep quality, it's essential to wind down 1–2 hours before bedtime through calming activities like meditation, dimming lights, and avoiding late-night meals or alcohol. Additionally, keeping the bedroom cool (around 67–68°F) enhances sleep quality, as seen through wearable HRV data.Wearables provide insight into stress and health management. Devices like Whoop and Garmin track HRV, offering data on recovery, stress levels, and readiness for physical or mental exertion. This information can help prevent burnout by signaling when stress levels are unsustainable and encouraging proactive adjustments like yoga, better sleep habits, or dietary changes. For women, these wearables have even been used to manage PMS symptoms by identifying stress patterns and adjusting activities accordingly.QUOTES: [7:02] “I understood that there was a metric called heart rate variability that could show and track these improvements. So if I did something good for my health, that will be revealed in the heart rate.” Dr. Færø[10:36] “Heart rate variability essentially shows the time between heartbeats. We want that number to be higher, right? When that number is higher, there's greater variability between those heartbeats, it's a sign of the body being in a restful state where it can adapt to whatever is coming at us.” Jenn Trepeck[12:28] “I think the piece that's really important for all of us is to recognize is the body can be in a stress response, even when we don't intellectually register stress.” - Jenn Trepeck[24:35] “Heart rate variability and sleep are intimately connected.” - Jenn Trepeck[35:20] “Breathe slowly; nobody will notice if you're in a meeting, or if you're on a phone call. Slow down your breath, and close your eyes so that throughout the day, you calm your nervous system down.” Dr. Færø[37:06] “It's only when you get sick, that's when your health depends on your wallet.” Dr. Færø"It's like you have a speedometer for your physiology." - Torkil FærøRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramSheMD WebsiteSheMD on SpotifySheMD on YouTubeGUEST RESOURCES:The Pulse Cure - WebsiteTorkil Faero - InstagramTorkil Faero - FacebookTorkil Faero - LinkedInGUEST BIOGRAPHY: Dr. Torkil Færø is a GP, emergency physician, documentary filmmaker, author, and photographer. Over a 26-year career as a freelance doctor, he has worked all over Norway, had a hundred thousand consultations and thus gained a unique picture of the diseases that plague us. He learned that the cause is most often found in the stresses our lifestyles place on our bodies. When his father died at 73, he realized that he had to change his lifestyle. Being 40 pounds overweight, under-trained, over-stressed, under-slept and drinking alcohol daily, he learned that this lifestyle could deprive him of decades. He found a way to track and regulate his nervous system and physiology using wearables. Færø is an award-winning photographer and author of The Camera Cure and has made TV films about his pilgrimages to Nidaros and Santiago de Compostela. An inveterate traveler, he has visited over 80 countries and speaks eight languages. He lives in Norway.

One of Ireland's most iconic sporting events, the Rás Tailteann has endured a turbulent few years of cancellations, financial worries, and unlikely comebacks. A lack of title sponsor, and then the Covid-19 pandemic, ensured that the Rás – a stage race intrinsically linked to Irish sporting, cultural, and political identity – was kept off the road for four years, before returning in a shorter, more homespun format last year. However, dark clouds continue to linger over the race's precarious future – and while this year's Rás is all set to go ahead next month, the financial position of the race, currently reliant on short-term sponsorship deals, has been described by the organisers as “unsustainable”. In this episode, Ryan chats to race director Ger Campbell, the man charged with resuscitating the event last year and whose own association with the Rás stretches back almost fifty years, about his efforts to ensure the race's survival, his plans for its future, the event's importance to Irish sport, and why he won't be answering the phone to any WorldTour events any time soon. And in part two, Dave is back on his bike, for a pleasant spin through the Alpine city of Annecy, where he was riding with and chatting to Mavic's head of product management Maxime Brunand about the French company's new superlight compact e-bike motor, the X-Tend, which could well be the catalyst for an e-road revolution…At the time of broadcast, our listeners can get a free Heart-Rate Monitor with the purchase of a Hammerhead Karoo 2. Don't get caught up in wanting a high calorie burn from your workout. When it comes to lifting weights, it won't show much of a burn. Cardio shows a higher burn than weights. With cardio, what you see is what you get for the calorie burn. When you stop exercising, that's it. Lifting is different. Your HRM (heart rate monitor) will not show the after burn you get from weights. It will typically show a lower burn during your your workout, when compared to cardio. BUT with weights you will burn calories all day long AFTER your workout. Don't let that frustrate you! Your HRM does not show the full picture. It's also the same with HIIT type workouts. You want to build muscle. Muscle burns calories all day long, even at rest. HRM are useful for cardio workouts because it will show when your body is beginning to adapt. Don't compare cardio to lifting. It's like comparing apples and bananas. Even different types of lifting phases will show different burns. Leg days, supersets will show higher but don't be fooled! All phases are important and should have a place in your lifting periodization. Cardio for fun. Weights to transform. Weights will transform your body. Muscle will make you a calorie burning machine. ______________ *Ways to Work With Me:* Join the EM2WL Workout App: https://bit.ly/38nbdry Get on the Diet Rebel Method Waitlist: https://eatmore2weighless.lpages.co/c... Nutrition Nugget! Bite-size, bonus episodes offering tips, tricks, and approachable science. This week, Jenn's talking about heart rate and heart rate monitors. While we are lucky that our heart beats on its own and we don't have to think about it, we should still be aware of what it might be telling us. We should all know our resting heart rate and target heart rate during exercise and then track our heart rate recovery, which is the length of time it takes for our heart rate to come down after exercise or activity. If we experience a change in our resting heart rate, it can indicate that something else is going on with our overall health. Our heart rate can inform us of heart function, mortality risk, and even how certain treatments are working. Do you know your resting heart rate? If not, it's time to learn! Like what you're hearing? This week, Maghalie and David are racing at the Westfjords Way Challenge, in Iceland. The route is 960km long, and the race will happen over 4 stages of more or less 225-250km. Although they are used to be racing cyclocross races at the World Cup level, this will be the first time that both Maghalie and David do an ultra-endurance race. Throughout the event, we will share daily short episodes about our experience. We will also attempt to have a different participant of the race on each episode, to meet cool people and enforce the fact that a wide diversity of people can accomplish such a challenge. Today, we arrived in Iceland, purchased a bike, and against all odds made it to Isafjordur for the start! The adventure has already started! We also meet with fellow racers Brook and Matteo, and organizer Tyler Wacker shares a few ideas with us. This episode is brought to you by Hammerhead. (Richard Yates added: The UK switched off analogue transmissions in 2012.) Ideally, the aerial needs to be the same length as the wavelength for best possible reception. However, at many frequencies, the wavelength is extremely long, making it impractical to make aerials that are the full wavelength. FM radio for example, would need aerials of a little over three meters long. That would be difficult to mount on a car and would tend to hit things as the car drove down the road. Also see Richard's detailed and technical summary of thoughts on the topic in the MeWe Group ------------------- Ian Barton with a Starlink Update After some experiments with positioning Dishy, I found that facing SW was giving me the most reliable signal. There are quite a few obstructions, so the view of the sky is a bit limited. However, Dishy is going to be moved to a chimney, which is about 10 metres above ground, this week. I am regularly getting download speeds of 150-200 Mbits. Yesterday the sky was completely covered with rain clouds and it was pouring with rain. I was getting download speeds of more than 200 Mbits. I have stopped using the supplied Starlink router. The cable is now connected to the WAN port of my Netgate firewall/router. The stats page of Starlink is on a separate network that is embedded in Dishy. So I have to create a firewall/NAT rule that can let me view the stats page on Dishy from my router. It consists of either a rotating disk with slots or holes or a lamp such as a flashtube which produces brief repetitive flashes of light. Usually, the rate of the stroboscope is adjustable to different frequencies. When a rotating or vibrating object is observed with the stroboscope at its vibration frequency (or a submultiple of it), it appears stationary. Thus stroboscopes are also used to measure frequency. The principle is used for the study of rotating, reciprocating, oscillating or vibrating objects. Machine parts and vibrating strings are common examples. A stroboscope used to set the ignition timing of internal combustion engines is called a timing light. For Record Player Platters The edge of the platter has marks at specific intervals so that when viewed under fluorescent lighting powered at mains frequency, provided the platter is rotating at the correct speed, the marks appear to be stationary. This will not work well under incandescent lighting, as incandescent bulbs don't significantly strobe. For this reason, some turntables have a neon bulb or LED next to the platter. The LED must be driven by a half wave rectifier from the mains transformer, or by an oscillator. ...you can also now get apps for smartphones which make use of the camera to clock the speed of rotation/movement. You can also get stand-alone meters of course, mainly used in industry I guess, with readouts.
