OH, HELLO, EVERYBODY! The pod is coming out (wink!) of hiatus for Pride Month, and we're kicking things off in a big way with Nashville singer/activist Heather Mae! Heather recently dropped her new single "Kissing Girls," which is not only a "super-queer bisexual Pride mega pop song" but also serves as a reclaiming of her own coming out story. Mercilessly bullied for her weight throughout childhood, Heather's only solace used to be the music videos she would run home to watch every day after school. But when she started attending Sunday school in the fourth grade...the bullying stopped. As a result, Heather became deeply invested in both the Church and the purity movement, and although all of her early kisses and pseudo-relationships were with girls, she truly never believed that they "counted." Heather shares how isolating with her partners during lockdown and re-examining those early experiences (not to mention learning about comp het for the first time!) made her want to write a song that captured "the sonic embodiment of queer joy and liberation." It's a beautiful, celebratory episode and the perfect way to start off Pride!Follow Heather on Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter at @heathermaemusic, and check out her website at heathermae.net and her YouTube channel at youtube.com/heathermae, where you can watch the official music video for "Kissing Girls." "Kissing Girls" is streaming everywhere, so go listen and add it to your Pride playlists!

Eli Conley is an indie folk singer-songwriter, teaching artist, and activist based on Miwok and Nisenan land (Sacramento, California). He makes music for queer and trans folks, justice seekers, and anyone who doesn't fit easily in a box. Eli's voice is tender and heartfelt, with melodies and that can leave you teary-eyed yet hopeful. As a queer transgender man from the South, his songs tell stories that aren't always reflected in roots music. Eli founded Queer Country West Coast, a regular series featuring LGBTQ+ blues, folk, and country artists in California. He has opened for Carsie Blanton, Heather Mae, and Grammy-winner Kimya Dawson, and been featured in the Huffington Post and the Advocate. Eli's third album Searching for What's True is coming in July 2023. Themes of uncertainty, ache, and loss come up again and again on this record. The songs are drawn from the concrete and immediate details of daily life: a stuffed animal clutched in a child's arms, a colorful sunset after a forest fire, a confederate statue toppling to the ground. Searching for What's True is Eli's first release since being diagnosed with a serious repetitive stress injury that forced him to stop playing music for many months. After wrist surgery and careful rehab, he came back to songwriting with a renewed sense of purpose. On the album's first single "Making Something New" he describes the work of an artist as "finding beauty in the wreckage / making meaning of the grief / when we tell our stories true we find release." His deep belief in the transformative power of creativity stems not only from his own experiences, but his many years leading singing and songwriting classes for queer and transgender people and allies. https://www.eliconley.com/ Support the showTwitter: GenderStoriesInstagram: GenderStoriesHosted by Alex IantaffiMusic by Maxwell von RavenLogo by Lior Effinger-Weintraub

This week 4-14-23 at 6:00 PM EST TIME! New cases to review from viewers? The FBI continues to ask for tips in connection to the disappearance of Michigan mother-of-8, Heather Mae Kelly, whose blood was found inside her abandoned vehicle in December. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office provided an update Tuesday after the FBI said there is “evidence to suggest” 35-year-old Kelley is a homicide victim. Her family reportedly said that her boyfriend is a person of interest but he's not been named as a suspect in her disappearance. He's currently being held on a charge unrelated to the case and is scheduled for jail release on April 26. As CrimeOnline previously reported, Kelley was last seen in the Comstock Township area on December 10, 2022, a day before her cousin found her car abandoned and set on fire. Investigators said her blood was found inside the vehicle and police found some of her clothing nearby. Kelley's boyfriend was reportedly finishing up sentencing at a halfway house in Kalamazoo at the time she disappeared. Kelley's cousin told police that the halfway house, located at 537 Chicago Ave., is a few miles from where she found Kelley's car. The cousin also saw a red pickup truck speeding away from the area the moment after she arrived, adding that she arrived shortly after someone set Kelley's car on fire. Police said on Tuesday that there is evidence that places a person of interest with Kelley before her disappearance, but declined to provide the person's name. There is currently more than one person being investigated, the sheriff added. “We know that it's likely somebody helped with the burning of the vehicle and the possible destruction of other evidence. And so that person is also a person, or people are also a focus of this investigation,” the sheriff said during the press statement. Court documents indicate that the boyfriend was serving the sentence for a murder-for-hire plot cocaine distribution charge, Wood TV reports. DNA is currently being processed in the case, the sheriff added. “Anyone with information is asked to call the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office at (269) 383-8748 or the Portage Department of Public Safety at (269) 329-4567,” the FBI said. “You may also contact your local FBI office, the nearest American Embassy or Consulate, or you can submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.” The crimes most commonly include murder; about 40 percent focus on tales of serial killers. 1 2] True crime comes in many forms, such as books, films, podcasts, and television shows. Many works in this genre recount high-profile, sensational crimes such as the JonBenet Ramsey killing, the O. J. Simpson murder case, and the Pamela Smart murder, while others are devoted to more obscure slayings. True crime works can impact the crimes they cover and the audience who consumes it. [3] The genre is often criticized for being insensitive to the victims and their families and is described by some as trash culture. [4] Not us, we want to look at things at a different view, what if? What actually happened? Did that actually happen the way they say? What is not being released? Was there a cover up? Mishandling of evidence? We look at every angle we can. No false promises or false hopes. We look at the facts. Not only that, we have a team of advisors that we bring in blindly and they give their professional testimony or experiences on what they gather or get from their abilities. Are we right? Do we have pieces of the puzzle to help local authorities? We don't know, but people do know, someone knows out there the actual story we cover. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/grizzly-onthehunt/support

We start this episode with taxes! Tax code is complicated and the fiscal impact of the McGirt decision on the State tax collection is also complicated. Dawn Carter has the story on how tribal tax exemptions are impacting state funded programs. We continue discussing Native American Nations in our next story. Allison Herrera tells us about the traumatic experiences of Indian Boarding schools, painfully brought to light in a one of a kind event in Anadarko. The testimonies are putting former boarders firmly on the road to healing. Next we revisit local nurses and new data on the long-term effects of COVID, specifically on the health of Black people-- which is significant. A lack of mental health services and patient advocates are just some of the real concerns across North Tulsa and similar communities. Nick Alexandrov has the story. Juddie Williams has our next story: Freedom of speech is a constitutional right that still requires protection so that people can express their political views as fully as possible. Williams brings us a story about two organizations whose sole purpose is to protect our civil liberties. Listen in as queer farmers find community through an event called Queer Farmer Convergence. Catherine Wheeler shares just how important it is to be seen, heard, and challenged by your peers. It's hard not to recognize that Black people and their contributions have touched every part of Oklahoma and Claremore is no exception. From Olympians to sucessful business men, Claremore has a long history of Black excellence that is now being showcased in the Black History exhibit at the Claremore Museum of History. Carlos Moreno brings us the details. We end with an audio diary from musicians who recently performed at the Woody Guthrie Center. Crys Matthews and her wife Heather Mae graced the stage, singing songs from each of their prestigious careers, love songs they wrote for each other, and each debuting a new song for what the couple called a small but mighty audience. As the crew broke down the stage, Matthews took some time to speak about being on the road again playing music. She is a rising star in the folk music world, winning the Lincoln Center New Music competition in 2017, and recent awards at the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance, and the International Folk Music Awards. A preacher's kid from small town North Carolina, Matthews talked about the themes in her music of love, faith, civil rights, and social justice. Celebrate FolkPod's first ever Pride Month episode with the inspiring Crys Matthews! In a family filled with fantastic singers, Crys thinks she probably wouldn't win the family talent competition, but we disagree. Growing up in the South as a Black, lesbian, daughter of a preacher in the '90s was a tumultuous journey, but Crys tells Cheryl and our listeners that those difficult times helped shape who she is today. From writing early college tunes about romance to her transition to composing social justice songs, Matthews seeks to change the world in profound ways through love. Maybe that's why she's been called “the next Woody Guthrie.” Find out about Crys' theories of “pandemic perks,” including the chance to collaborate with Heather Mae. Plus, a previously unrecorded song played live, exclusively for FolkPod!

Continuing our live podcast series, Heather Mae will join us to talk about how she’s been serving her community during this crisis. The last time we spoke just before the start of lockdown she said “right now, I’ve got to get to work. My community needs me” and Heather has been rolling up her sleeves and connecting with her fans everywhere, she’ll be telling us all about. And who knows, she may even play a few songs... Unfazed by what a typical pop artist today is “supposed” to look or sound like, Heather Mae, an award-winning songwriter whose evocative vocals and rhythmic piano style call to mind artists like Stevie Nicks and Sara Bareilles, creates intoxicating music that tackles complex topics surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, self-love, racial injustice, social inequality, and women’s rights. Inspired by her own personal experiences and identities - a queer, plus size woman living with Bipolar Disorder - Mae is an on-fire musical and emotional experience. In her most sonically adventurous project yet, GLIMMER (Sept 2019) - her second produced record and first full length album - breaks the stigma surrounding mental health, reminding us all that we are not alone. Join our inner circle on Facebook as a super music fan or singer-songwriter and be part of our community! https://www.facebook.com/groups/nyacinnercircle Our podcasts are live on Facebook Wednesday nights at 8PM EST so watch it as it happens and join the conversation! https://www.facebook.com/Newyorkartistscollective heathermae.net @heathermaemusic

We close out Women's History Month with a podcast with the Women’s Entrepreneurship Product Lead for the International Finance Corporation's (IFC) Gender Secretariat, Heather Mae Kipnis, and CIPE's Director for the Center for Women's Economic Empowerment, Barbara Langley. They discuss IFC's role in supporting stakeholders and clients to close gender gaps in the economy, and doing so in a sustainable way. Heather Mae Kipnis highlights the business case for closing the gender gap and help create more opportunities for women entrepreneurs, and the top 6 challenges women face in business and investment. This podcast was originally recorded in November 2019.
Beauty standards in the music industry, being a fat, femme queer, Heather Mae tells us how her openness has garnered her a loyal fanbase and how she is coping with the Coronavirus crisis that is affecting the livelihoods of musicians everywhere... Unfazed by what a typical pop artist today is “supposed” to look like and how the typical pop artist is “supposed” to sound, Heather Mae, an award-winning songwriter whose evocative vocals and rhythmic piano style call to mind artists like Stevie Nicks and Sara Bareilles, creates intoxicating music that tackles complex topics surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ issues, self-love, racial injustice, social inequality, and women’s rights. Inspired by her own personal experiences and identities - a queer, plus size woman living with Bipolar Disorder - and those of her multifaceted fans with whom she has forged connections throughout her many years of touring across the United States, Mae crafts powerful lyrics and unforgettable music about life’s moments--from the quietly chaotic to the explosive. In 2016, after an eight-month period of silence to recover from vocal nodules, Mae made a vow: she would dedicate her career to solely write music that made the world a better place. Her independently-released debut EP I AM ENOUGH, which reached #58 on iTunes Pop Album charts, was her announcement to the world. Mae, who was dubbed “the new queer Adele” by L-Mag, envelopes her audience with a message of hope. Her newest project, GLIMMER, is a collection of nine songs supporting one central theme:” Feel To Heal.” Within the grooves of the new album, Mae wrestles with the complexities of existing as a human with mental illness. From her #MeToo-inspired feminist anthem “Warrior,” featuring a choir of 100+ female vocalists, to “You Are My Favorite”, a love song written for her wife inspired by her own wedding vows which will surely be the 2019 wedding soundtrack for LGBTQ+ couples, Mae shows she’s nothing less than a powerhouse. She has examined her struggle with Bipolar Disorder from every angle in order to create her most sonically adventurous set of recordings yet--and to remind us that we aren’t alone. Join us on Facebook for the month of April as we take the podcast LIVE ! During this coronavirus crisis we'll be talking to artists who are mobilising and taking their gigs online, industry experts to see how they're helping musicians during this period. https://www.facebook.com/groups/619728222098700 https://heathermae.net/

Heather Mae is a social-justice songwriter whose song "I Am Enough" has become a self-love anthem for many. With her second album, Glimmer, Heather Mae is helping people to know they aren't alone by writing music about mental health. Learn more.
Heather Mae is a DC based artist who is a social-justice songwriter and a mental health activist. She found her true voice through a trauma that took her 8 months to overcome. Her voice carries to speak truths on mental illnesses, pushes for support in LGBT+ communities, fights for social justice in a world where it seems almost impossible and she gives hope to those that feel like they are stuck in the dark. She's a fucking super hero and I can't wait to see where she takes us. Her new album, Glimmer, a record for the light seekers, is currently being kickstarted (click to check it out) and she needs your help! I personally have witnessed Heather Mae in her element; singing her heart out to an audience that is so captivated by her powerful words, her personality, and her amazing bright light. This talk was very enlightening and Heather's words and wisdom are incredibly soul-fulfilling. I encourage you to listen and look within so you can help bring light to yourself and to this world.

In this podcast, I'm doing something that scares me… coming out about my sexual orientation, which is just another piece of my identity which informs my voice and what I hope to share in this podcast. As much as I tried to organize my thoughts for this podcast, I would call this one experimental as I explore questioning my sexuality with a brief glimpse into a journal entry that reflects on my experience as a young teenager becoming aware of the fact that I'm not straight (oh wait… I thought everyone was like this?!). I begin to describe the way that my identity of being Christian and questioning has mattered immensely as I've navigated life. I hope that this might help you see where I'm coming from, encourage you in your own journey of self-discovery, or perhaps empower you in your role as an ally to those in the LGBTQ+ community. Haven't shared much of this with many, so I sure do appreciate your listening. Peace, love, and hygge, Claire Today's tidbits… 3:40 what the hell is up with my sexuality and this idea of coming out? 6:20 why the hell do I want to share about this?! 8:30 I'm not straight ¯_(ツ)_/¯ but I have disclaimers (attraction is complicated!) 10:30 identifiers are helpful, but not everything (Pansexual? Bisexual? Demisexual? Questioning.) 14:20 style expression as I navigated my sexual orientation 17:30 Claire's journal… a peek into beginning to come out to myself, holding my Christian faith and potentially being queer 26:00 about coming out to myself, friends, and others 30:00 my sexuality is not about phases (bisexual erasure is real…) 35:00 I'll be showcasing more local and rising artists! So, here's “Hero” by the lovely Heather Mae

We are SO BEHIND in posting episodes but this is all still relevant. We are also VERY VERY DUMB during this episode. Paula went to one of the marches in DC and things were awesome. Amy chilled with Holocaust survivors for two days and then went to the Days of Remembrance ceremony in the US Capitol and saw President Trump. Amy also has very complicated feelings about the show 13 Reasons Why. Paula's Fatphobic Disaster is the Russian airline AEROFLOT. Our recommendations are Trader Joe's mixed nut butter, the podcast Bitch Sesh, Real Housewives of Atlanta and Heather Mae!
Had a great conversation with singer-songwriter Heather Mae talking all about her new record “One Year of Songs” that is being released TOMORROW! Heather was kind enough to share her single with us “One of These Days”, so stay tuned through the end of the pod to get a sneak peak!
