Join us as we chat with Professor Chet Schemahorn, a 3rd Degree Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt. Chet Schemahorn started his training in May of 1995 watching VHS instructional tapes released by Rorion & Royce Gracie, after witnessing Royce revolutionize martial arts in the early days of the UFC, and then attending 2 day seminars with Royce in Columbus, Ohio. Due to financial limitations, Chet could only go to the Gracie Academy for 1 week visits 4 times a year. He would take what he learned each time and show his close friends, always correcting mistakes and adding new techniques. In February of 2001, after teaching 2 of his students the entire stand up self-defense program and filming them performing the moves for Rorion Gracie and Helio Gracie to review - and after a vigorous private session where Grand Master Helio Gracie pointed out some needed corrections, Chet was promoted to assistant instructor of the Gracie Academy. On a historic occasion, in August 2016, Chet was the first ever certified instructor to promote 3 students to the rank of black belt without having to travel to the Gracie Academy in Torrance, Ca. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Today's guest is Alberto Robayo. Alberto Robayo is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under the legendary Rorion Gracie, the eldest son of Helio Gracie, the founder of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Alberto is the owner and head instructor at Miloki Flow BJJ academy with locations in Philadelphia, Miami, Florida and soon Charleston, SC. Alberto, born in Bogota, Colombia has a fascinating story that he shares that takes us from his hometown of Bogota, Colombia, to Australia, Mexico, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and now Charlestown, SC. Alberto graduated college with a business degree in Colombia, then soon ventured off to Australia where he earned a degree in Film and TV production. While in Australia, Alberto worked on feature films and documentaries, while also working as a divemaster and scuba diving instructor. Then one day he discovered BJJ. Alberto tells the story of how a brief stopover in Los Angeles resulted in him meeting the Gracie family, his future wife and changed the course of his life. Alberto found himself living in Los Angles and training full time at the Gracie Academy in Torrance. Not having any money to pay the tuition at the Gracie Academy, Alberto worked as a janitor cleaning the school to pay for his tuition. In our conversation today, Alberto shares with us the life lessons he learned from training with the Gracie family, why when he is making a difficult decision, he first decides what he does not want to do to help him decide the best course of action. Alberto and I also discuss why training BJJ can be such a powerful, positive force in people's lives. Alberto also shares with us the story of a motorcycle accident he was in back in 2016 that required multiple surgeries and years to recover from and why he thinks that accident was “great thing” that happened to him and how that accident brought about positive and needed changes into his life. We also discuss what lessons he learned from being a small business owner during a global pandemic and what life lesson he took from the COVID shutdown that he is carrying forward with him into the future. I was so excited when Alberto agreed to come on the show and share his remarkable story. Alberto is just an awesome guy. He is candid, speaks with emotion and passion. He is one of the most interesting people you will meet: beside being a black belt in BJJ, he is an entrepreneur, family man, he speaks 3 languages, has produced movies and documentaries, been a dive master, scuba instructor and even jumps out of airplanes. On Episode 5 of the Musashi R&D Sessions Podcast, Ross and Dhiren are joined by Grant Bradshaw, a black belt in jiu-jitsu under Royce Gracie and Luke Beston, and owner of Iconic Jiu-Jitsu, a Gracie Academy on the Central Coast. This episode focuses a sports spotlight on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the history of the martial art, and how strategy and technique are more essential than strength and size, when applied correctly. The guys address the stigmas attached to different belts, the diversity of athletes that practice the martial art, and the role of jiu-jitsu and Royce Gracie in the origin of the UFC. In sports related news, we speak about the new '96 Bulls documentary, The Last Dance, and rediscover Musashi's partnership with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. The guys also dive into the auction of Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium name, the recent NRL camping scandal, and the 2020 NFL draft viewership record. Similarly discussed is the news that the International Cricket Council is considering legalised ball-tampering in wake of COVID-19. We finish this episode with a pair of listener questions about toning muscle and listening to music during exercise. Even with Grant's help and small hint from Hal the Intern, the guys can't quite guess the origin of a famous athlete quote. Once again, Dhiren applies the philosophy of Miyamoto Musashi to the topic using the quote: The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things. The brothers created Gracie University, the world's first interactive, online martial arts learning center, and developed distance learning packages for the Academy's proprietary courses. He also talked about how loving what you do won’t necessarily guarantee you success, even though it is a crucial element for success. My takeaway from the interview came when we talked about perfectionism, which inspired me to title this episode “Balancing Perfectionism.” Stick around for my final thoughts after the interview when I share with you the concept of the three rational “R’s”, a concept that can help you, or someone you know, to balance perfectionism. Ryron & Rener Gracie are American Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners, head instructors at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy, and creators of Gracie University. Members of the Gracie family, they are the grandsons of Grandmaster Helio Gracie, and the second-eldest son of Grandmaster Rorion Gracie, who was among some of the first family members to bring Gracie jiu-jitsu to the United States. Ryon & Rener spent over twenty-five years at the Gracie Academy studying under Rorion and Helio Gracie.
On multiple days each week, my wife and I play a game. She points to a bruise and asks, "How'd that happen?" Fair question. But I don't have a specific question. All I can say is, "Rolling at jiu jitsu." Yep, my 52 year old body has to tolerate my decision to take up jiu jitsu last January. A few months after I started going to jiu jitsu, I posted a podcast episode on Lessons I Learned At Jiu Jitsu. Well, here we are, some 11 months later. And I have learned a few more lessons. Since I posted the first episode, I have continued going to class throughout the week. And with continuing to go, I also progressed. In the Gracie Academy framework, I earned my Combatives Belt back in November. That means that... well... I am still a white belt. Just an advanced white belt! Which means that I am now allowed in the advanced class, the Blue Belt Cycle. Which meant that everything I had learned up until then was met with a block or defense when I tried it on a higher ranked belt. It had worked fine before! But now, I was back to square one. As I have told a few people, it is kind of like when you are in the last year of middle school. You think you are "top dog," and strut around a little, pretending to own that school. Then, you go to high school. And you discover you are at the bottom of the ladder. Back to beginner. That would be me. Back to beginner. Humbling? A little. But more of a reminder that progress includes lots of new beginning points. So now, when I can't make a move (or more likely, when I get submitted and have to tap), I just have to laugh... then learn. Listen in to this week's episode for 4 more life lessons I have (re)learned from jiu jitsu. Richard Bresler was Rorion Gracie's first regular American student, which means he was really the first person in the United States to train Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He started training in July of 1979, 14 years before the first UFC. That means he has a litany of incredible stories, including some from when Chuck Norris invited Rorion to Las Vegas, and Richard was the only non-Gracie to make the trip. There are stories from early dojo challenge matches, including what happened when Judo Gene Lebell asked Richard to roll. We wanted to talk to Richard because he doesn't get enough credit for what he's done to spread Gracie Jiu-Jitsu throughout the United States and the world. He helped to finance the first Gracie Academy and to make the first UFC happen -- you'll hear about that as well. For most of us training today, Richard played a significant role in making that happen. Bear that in mind when you're hearing Richard Bresler talked about how living with Rorion saved his life, and when you listen to him talk about visits with Helio, Carlos, Rickson and Rolls Gracie. Today we go straight to the source for stories of Gracie Jiu Jitsu in America. We also announce two new sponsorships of local athletes who applied! Thanks as always to our sponsors, US Grappling, Toro BJJ, and Cageside Fight Co.!
