Send us a textImagine being forced to run a race where losing means death. That's exactly what happened to Grand Vizier Haci Salih Pasha in 1822, a dramatic and little-known chapter from the annals of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman Empire, one of history's most formidable powers, spanned over 600 years, commanding vast territories across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Renowned for its rich culture, breathtaking architecture, and intricate political system, it was a world where power and peril walked hand in hand—especially for the Grand Vizier, the Sultan's second-in-command.Haci Salih Pasha hailed from Izmir, a bustling port city in the Ottoman realm. His journey to power began modestly—serving as master of the barley and minister of powdermills—before his administrative prowess and loyalty propelled him to deputy grand vizier. In 1821, he ascended to the coveted role of Grand Vizier. Yet, this prestigious position came with a deadly catch: the Grand Vizier was often the fall guy for the empire's troubles.During Salih Pasha's tenure, the Ottoman Empire grappled with the Greek War of Independence. For centuries, the Greeks had lived under Ottoman rule, but now they fought fiercely for freedom. The conflict was brutal, marked by atrocities on both sides. Despite Salih Pasha's efforts, the Ottoman forces faltered, and Sultan Mahmud II grew increasingly displeased. In 1822, the Sultan summoned Salih Pasha to Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, a sprawling complex that served as the sultans' residence for over four centuries. Within its walls lay the Sultan's garden—a serene oasis of lush greenery and elegant fountains, soon to become the stage for a life-or-death ordeal.Upon arrival, Salih Pasha faced a chilling ritual: he was handed a cup of sherbet. White sherbet signaled safety; red meant death. When he received the red sherbet, his fate seemed sealed. But there was one last chance—the “Death Race.” In this extraordinary ritual, the condemned Grand Vizier had to outrun the chief executioner through the garden to the Fish Market Gate. Victory meant exile and survival; defeat meant immediate execution. The odds were stacked against Salih Pasha. At 50 years old, clad in a long ceremonial tunic unsuited for sprinting, he faced a young, agiRead MF Thomas' novels Like Clockwork https://amzn.to/417lOzyArcade https://amzn.to/4aTpisxA Sickness in Time https://amzn.to/41apSPKSeeing by Moonlight ...

In May 1978, Jan Wolski, a humble farmer from the small village of Emilcin, Poland, claimed he was approached by two strange humanoid beings while driving his horse-drawn cart through the woods. According to Wolski, the beings were about 5 feet tall, with olive-green skin, slanted eyes, and wore black, tight-fitting suits. They led him to a white, rectangular craft hovering above the ground, where he was taken aboard. Inside, Wolski reported being examined by these creatures using advanced technology before being released without harm. His account, told with vivid and calm detail, caused a sensation in Poland, sparking debates among skeptics and believers alike. There's a sign, mounted on a locked door, four decks down from the flight deck on the USS Ticonderoga, a giant aircraft carrier, a sign reads “RESTRICTED SECURITY AREA / KEEP OUT / AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL ONLY / IT IS UNLAWFUL TO ENTER THIS AREA WITHOUT WRITTEN PEMISSION OF THE COMMANDING OFFICER” No one, except the men assigned to work in that room, was allowed to go through  that door.  Because behind that door are stored the nuclear bombs the Ticonderoga carries.  And on the floor of that room the bombs are assembled by the sailors in the weapons division.  They trained to do so efficiently, rapidly, in case they were called upon to arm the bombs for use. The location is the Philippine Sea during the Vietnam War.  The date is December 5, 1965, and before this day is over, one of those nuclear weapons will be in the ocean, armed to go off with no way of recovering it or disarming it.  Today, in our second part of our two part series on broken arrows – lost nuclear weapons – we will explore the only armed nuclear bomb the United States lost and did not recover.  All other weapons lost had fissile material, but had not been primed to explode.  The bomb lost by the Ticonderoga those fifty-seven years ago still sits at the bottom of the sea of Japan, still capable of detonating a full nuclear explosion.Visit us at www.mydarkpath.comwww.youtube.com/@mydarkpath

In 1925, Roald Amundsen's expedition to the North Pole failed and his two planes were force to land on the ice without reaching their destination.  His team of six barely to civilization aboard a single, stripped down plane.  Amundsen, already a seasoned explorer, decided that he'd never again allow himself to be stuck on the ice.  A year later, he successfully reached the North Pole aboard the Airship Norge, alongside American Lincoln Ellsworth and Italian airship designer, Umberto Nobile.  Conflict among these men finally broke into the open as the Norge struggled back to civilization, barely surviving a terrible storm over Alaska.  Then, in 1928 Nobile set out to reach the North Pole again, this time for the sole honor of his country, aboard an Italian named airship of his design with an Italian crew.  But this trip would be beset with trials and horrific events that make the disaster of the Airship Italia one that haunts arctic explorers to this day.

Bram Stoker's novel Dracula completely transformed the idea of vampires.  And the pop culture image of Dracula's castle is based on a building that never existed, but was an amazing creation of a writer's imagination of a location in Romania he never visited.  Today Romania is a tourist desination, in part driven by visitors' desire to visit a place where the fictional events of the novel were set. They even buy dirt from a castle linked to a fictional vampire who never existed.  We seek authenticity, the real, in the fictional…even when the story is about the most famous creature of the night, Dracula.

Episode Summary: My Dark Path podcast explores the fringes of history, science, and the paranormal. This episode is a continuation of the “Vegas Field Trip” where stories of eerie  happenings are explored as a backdrop following different tragic and fatal events  in the past.In this conversation, Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur explored hotel hallways,  walking the floors of casinos ranging from some of the oldest to the biggest and  most glamorous. Shared in this episode are more clips recorded by the team  in the very places they were discussing in the pedestrian hallways around  Bally's, on the main floor of the Luxor, or in a restaurant in Binion's. Episode HighlightsAbout today's conversation; More experiences of Thurkettle,  Townsend, and Hodur in the dark tales of Las Vegas. The ghosts of Benny Binion's hotel. La Palazza Mansion; The Death House Ghosts from the sins of corporations; the MGM fire disaster. The Curse of the LuxorA few Celebrity ghosts.Zac Bagans' Haunted MuseumNotes:Three storytellers, Thurkettle, Townsend, and Hodur, rendezvoused in Sin City for  a special My Dark Path field trip, recording clips of discussions had in key places  surrounded by stories of supernatural happenings. The first clip was recorded in  The El Cortez where the supposedly haunted room, 3300, sits in the historic wing  our team was exploring. One of the biggest major criminal entities who made a  fortune in driving the evolution of Las Vegas was Benny Binion; his hotel tells all  about its ghosts. Despite being a convicted murderer and an experienced gambling hall boss even before his initial arrival to Vegas, there is a statue of Benny in Vegas today. His story started in Texas where he was born in 1904, but couldn't go to  school due to chronic poor health. Hence, Benny got his education by  accompanying his father, a horse trader, on trips throughout the wild, wild west  where many fellow horse traders also gambled. As a teenager, Benny got more involved in the gambling business till he moved to  El Paso where he began bootlegging and even committed murders, but walked  scot-free based on his influence. When his destructive nature attracted attention  beyond his influence, he moved to Las Vegas where he set up the Binion's  Horseshoe Casino, leveraging higher stakes than other casinos to attract high  rollers, as well as many other perks that transformed gambling in Vegas to what it  would evolve to become today. In the end, the law caught up with Benny as he was  arrested for tax evasion and lost his Nevada gaming license but "The hotel  Apache", the only section of Binion's with its name restored, is the only  hotel that will openly tell you it is haunted. At the front desk, there's a  pamphlet describing its history of haunted encounters with a card to report yours;  this list is on the Dark Path Website. Interestingly, most cases were reported in  the same rooms or areas of the hotel, with no explanation from the hotel as to why. Another place in the suburbs known for supernatural events is the La  Palazza Mansion also known as The Death Mansion, The Devil's Mansion, and  The Hell House. Located in a residential neighborhood, miles from the Las Vegas  strip, it was once owned by Tony “The Ant” Spilotro, who was an enforcer for one  of the deadliest gangs in Vegas. Rumored to be the place where many of Tony's  heinous acts were carried out, the house is also known for legends surrounding it  like having dead bodies in the backyard and a drain in a room for spilled blood to  flow out. La Palazza does not offer ghost tours but there are stories of previous  owners like Chris Martinez, who led the Ghost Ad
