If you've ever felt intimated by old books, or haven't been sure you're reading them “correctly”, it is NOT just you. We regularly hear from readers seeking tips and advice on how to read the classics. Earlier this season New Yorker Lizzey McFarlin sent us her guest submission asking for help to approach the classics in a different way. She'd been trying to read them the way she'd approach any other book—late at night, hoping to sink in and quickly turn the pages—but was too often growing so bored she would abandon them. She knew that strategy wasn't working, but she wasn't sure what to do instead. Lizzey would appreciate some fresh ideas, and Anne has those to share today. You'll also hear about Lizzey's local book club and the themed excursions they pair with the classics they read each quarter. We hope you'll find this conversation inspiring and empowering. Find the list of titles mentioned today and share your ideas for excursions over on our show notes page. We're excited to share that beginning today, August 4, we are adding a new option to enjoy our weekly What Should I Read Next? episodes without ads. When you sign up for our new ad-free tier on our Patreon platform and add your personal subscriber link to your favorite podcast player, you'll get an ad-free version of our weekly episode automatically each week. We discuss herbal medicine, homeschooling, a barter economy and being oddballs in general.Herbs that Heal(Catholic) Home Remedies to Forage and Growby Judson Carroll, Stephen Cunninghamhttps://sophiainstitute.com/product/herbs-that-heal/?oid=853&affid=281Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902 Judson Carroll - YouTubeLovesick Blues and how to change keys to suit your voice (transposition)While playing through Emmett Miller's version of "Lovesick Blues", I found that it was very different than Hank Williams' classic version recorded about 20 years after Miller's. Most resources state that both played it in the key of F Major, but that Hank played it in D, using a capo to raise the chords to F. I don't like using capos because you loose a lot of the guitar's range and it limits your breaks/solos. So, I play it in open D, which you can capo up if you like, and in open F. Changing keys is called transposing, and it is a very useful skill to match songs to the singer's voice or just to play more in your own style. I then show you how to improvise a solo in whatever key you choose, using moveable chord shapes, aka the CAGED System.https://youtu.be/zFKUUJ6noWgEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

Steve and I discuss herbs for sprains, strains and muscle pains.Herbs that Heal(Catholic) Home Remedies to Forage and Growby Judson Carroll, Stephen Cunninghamhttps://sophiainstitute.com/product/herbs-that-heal/?oid=853&affid=281Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902 Judson Carroll - YouTubeHow to Buy a Cheap Instrument - Saint James Infirmary BluesSometimes we need a cheap instrument, whether we are broke or traveling. I picked up this baritone ukulele for $20. After playing around with the tunings a bit, I settled on "plectrum tuning", which is C,G,B,D. That tuning brought out a rich tone from the instrument. I play "Saint James Infirmary Blues", the classic New Orleans funeral march, so you can hear what an awesome rhythm and melody instrument the uke became just by tuning down two strings... even with a broken finger! Playing music does not have to be expensive. For centuries, people just made do with what they had and made music better than most today!https://youtu.be/RDRpAYPRkQwEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs

This will be among my most controversial podcasts. I reflect on America's 250th anniversary and how our founding principles contrast with how we responded to COVID. I don't pull any punches. The COVID panic was the reason I started this podcast, and to quote the Who, I get on my knees and pray, "We don't get fooled again"!Herbs that Heal(Catholic) Home Remedies to Forage and Growby Judson Carroll, Stephen Cunninghamhttps://sophiainstitute.com/product/herbs-that-heal/?oid=853&affid=281Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902 Judson Carroll - YouTubeCasey Jones or Ben Dewberry..... etc.I show you how to play Mississippi John Hurt's version of "Casey Jones" on guitar. This is my favorite version of this folk song that has been played countless folk, blues, country, bluegrass and rock musicians, spanning the 1800s through the Grateful Dead and beyond. I also do Jimmie Rodger's "Ben Dewberry", which is another version of the same song, and I get a chance to play my 100 year old long scale Hohner Marine Band. So, by the end of it, I've done the song in two keys, in probably 10 different styles and even reharmonize the chords into a jazz version!https://youtu.be/yvxoDB6ymKcEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs
In this episode of Walk, Don't Run to the Doctor, Miles Hassell MD explains why optimal health starts in your own kitchen. While many people search for health shortcuts through supplements, special testing, weight-loss medications, and wellness trends, the evidence points to a much simpler solution: cooking more of your own meals using real, minimally processed foods. Dr. Hassell discusses how home-cooked meals can reduce the risk of chronic disease, improve weight management, save money, and help create lifelong healthy habits. He also shares practical strategies for learning to cook, planning ahead, and making healthy eating realistic even with a busy schedule. Key Takeaways • Cooking at home is strongly associated with lower rates of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity, and other chronic illnesses. • Highly processed foods make up the majority of many modern diets and are linked to numerous health problems. • Restaurant meals and packaged "health foods" often contain hidden processed ingredients, refined carbohydrates, and additives. • Whole, minimally processed foods naturally promote fullness and can reduce daily calorie intake without strict dieting. • Sustainable lifestyle habits often provide better long-term results than relying on supplements, testing, or weight-loss medications. • Learning to cook does not require expensive equipment or advanced skills—simple recipes and repetition build confidence. • Meal planning and preparation are essential for making healthy eating convenient and sustainable. • Cooking at home can save significant money while improving health and quality of life. 00:00 Introduction – Why You Have to Cook 00:00:41 The New Food Pyramid and the Importance of Home Cooking 00:02:25 How Cooking at Home Reduces Disease Risk and Saves Money 00:03:01 The Hidden Dangers of Highly Processed Foods 00:05:23 Whole Foods vs. Processed Foods for Weight Management 00:06:53 Misleading "Health Foods" and Marketing Claims 00:08:14 Building a Foundation of Good Food, Activity, and Purpose 00:09:00 Learning to Cook: Simple Steps for Beginners 00:10:07 Making Time for Cooking and Reordering Priorities 00:11:17 Meal Planning Strategies for a Healthier Life References: Dicken, S.J., et al.

By special request, I discuss the medicinal properties of tobacco, most of which are topical. Tobacco is a powerful herb that can be both useful and very toxic. Care and common sense must be exercised. And, while I do not advocate its recreational use, it is by no means a bad or evil plant. God made everything and declared it "good." While anything may be misused, nothing in nature should be demonized because of irresponsible or mis-use.Herbs that Heal(Catholic) Home Remedies to Forage and Growby Judson Carroll, Stephen Cunninghamhttps://sophiainstitute.com/product/herbs-that-heal/?oid=853&affid=281Also, I am back on Youtube Please subscribe to my channel: @judsoncarroll5902 Judson Carroll - YouTubeTune of the week:I Ain't Got Nobody on guitarI show you how to play a classic early jazz tune that has been a favorite at least since 1914! Emmett Miller had a hit with it in the 1920s, and Bob Wills in the 1930s, Louis Prima in the 1950s, David Lee Roth in the 1980s... and countless others. It has a great rhythm, which I enhance with some western swing style chords for a moving bass line. Then, I teach you a fingerstyle solo/break and give you some ideas to turn this tune into a real showstopper... this one is pure fun!!https://youtu.be/b4Qu2yGuJAcEmail: judson@judsoncarroll.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/southern-appalachian-herbs--4697544/supportRead about The Spring Foraging Cookbook: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2024/01/the-spring-foraging-cookbook.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CRP63R54Medicinal Weeds and Grasses of the American Southeast, an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/medicinal-weeds-and-grasses-of-american.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47LHTTHandConfirmation, an Autobiography of Faithhttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2023/05/confirmation-autobiography-of-faith.htmlAvailable in paperback on Amazon:https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C47Q1JNKVisit my Substack and sign up for my free newsletter:https://judsoncarroll.substack.com/Read about my new other books:Medicinal Ferns and Fern Allies, an Herbalist's Guide https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/11/medicinal-ferns-and-fern-allies.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMSZSJPSThe Omnivore's Guide to Home Cooking for Preppers, Homesteaders, Permaculture People and Everyone Else: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/10/the-omnivores-guide-to-home-cooking-for.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGKX37Q2Medicinal Shrubs and Woody Vines of The American Southeast an Herbalist's Guidehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/06/medicinal-shrubs-and-woody-vines-of.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2T4Y5L6andGrowing Your Survival Herb Garden for Preppers, Homesteaders and Everyone Elsehttps://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/04/growing-your-survival-herb-garden-for.htmlhttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B09X4LYV9RThe Encyclopedia of Medicinal Bitter Herbs: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/03/the-encyclopedia-of-bitter-medicina.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5MYJ35RandChristian Medicine, History and Practice: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2022/01/christian-herbal-medicine-history-and.htmlAvailable for purchase on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09P7RNCTBHerbal Medicine for Preppers, Homesteaders and Permaculture People: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/2021/10/herbal-medicine-for-preppers.htmlAlso available on Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/B09HMWXL25Podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/show/southern-appalachian-herbsBlog: https://southernappalachianherbs.blogspot.com/Free Video Lessons: Herbal Medicine 101 - YouTube https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7QS6b0lQqEclaO9AB-kOkkvlHr4tqAbs
