They explore the importance of reframing sales as problem-solving and how to effectively ask for the business. They also emphasize the value of taking action and building a business, even without prior experience or talent. The conversation concludes with closing remarks and the possibility of future updates on the freelance world.Jon's Bio: As the “Godfather of the freelance economy”, Jon has been the leading voice for the freelance revolution through his Forbes column, advising, and research with the University of Toronto. A former Head of HR and Chief Talent, Jon is the go to for every marketplace executive. Takeaways The freelance economy is growing rapidly, with millions of people working as freelancers or gigsters. Transitioning to freelancing requires careful planning and consideration of income volatility, benefits, and the potential for loneliness. Enterprises need to rethink how they resource their operations and build a flexible, impermanent workforce. Freelancers should focus on their unique skills and problem-solving abilities to stand out in the market. Freelancers can find opportunities on freelance platforms, but it's important to differentiate oneself and solve specific problems. Sales should be reframed as problem-solving, focusing on the importance of solving the client's problem rather than selling features and benefits. To convert conversations into clients, it is crucial to learn how to ask for the business and confidently state the price. Taking action is key to success in freelancing and entrepreneurship, as many people hesitate or do not take any action at all. Building a successful business does not necessarily require talent or experience, but rather a willingness to try and learn from the process. It's a scary time as the Biden Administration proposes a freelancer killing bill that can rocket ship inflation and put the US 50 years behind. The freelance economy is going nowhere. (find these statistics in our newsletter >> humancloud.substack.com) 40% of full-time employees in the US have a side-gig 90% plus of corporate leaders in a recent global survey said they utilize freelancers and say they will increase their reliance. 80% of employers say they are increasing their use of freelancers as they suspend full-time hires. Instead the US classification direction will force companies to prioritize other countries like the UK who repealed it's equivalent law IR35 and put their freelancers in front of their US equivalent freelancers. Some managers worry that hiring a freelancer means you will have to take a leap of faith. You won’t know that person’s work ethic or professional personality. But in reality, hiring and managing a freelancer doesn’t need to be scary. Instead, it can transform your team’s work. Today’s guest is Matthew Mottola. Matthew is a leader in ethically creating the remote freelance economy. He is CEO of Venture L, Author of The Human Cloud and a Forbes Contributor. Matthew and I talk about working with freelancers - how the Pandemic has changed things, how to overcome common challenges of working with freelancers, and how to optimize the entire lifecycle of hiring, onboarding, collaborating and more. They specialize in a specific skill set for a set amount of time. Freelancers don’t have to be temporary. If you like them, you can take them on to future projects for years to come. Because they don’t feel as fearful of losing their job, freelancers may be more forthright with critical, helpful feedback about your work culture. Give freelancers feedback; everyone enjoys growth opportunities. Involve them in your team; everyone benefits from a sense of belong

Daniel Rodriguez, CMO of Simplr, joins the podcast to discuss how the human cloud (in fact what they call their model!) is helping them disrupt customer experience and the traditional call center. They've even written a book on the subject, Experience is Everything, available now. He also talks about being a finance and marketing person in a world of startups.
Thanks for tuning into the Catapulting Commissions Podcast with your host, Anthony Garcia. Joining the show this week is Matthew Coatney, seasoned C-level product and technology executive, entrepreneur, advisor, author, and speaker with decades of experience helping business and technology work better together. Matthew's book, The Human Cloud, is all about the future of work–freelancing, AI, and the automation revolution. This sort of change was thought to happen in 10 years or so but gained incredible relevancy when the pandemic hit and fast-forwarded this transition. Hand-to-hand combat sales–pounding the pavement–is no exception. Matthew believes we will adapt. Retention and the talent war continues on, and Matthew attributes the turnover to the massively evolving space of sales. The truth is, salespeople will follow the money–that means they will go sell a product that is selling–period. Products that used to have a decade-long cycle now are less than a year. Automation is a hugely discussed topic in sales, as we know. Where it becomes useful is in spaces where a lot of time is spent and not a lot of outward value is created–things like CRMs and other administrative systems. The problem is introducing these new technologies. It's important to not always try to strive for 100% adoption. It's about incrementally reaching benchmarks. Once you get value, it's in a good place. Transitioning into sales leadership, especially from a manager to a VP or higher, can be difficult. This is because what you care about changes. You're going from an individual contributor to having to turn an eye towards the longer-term goals. It's easy to get sucked in a micro-managing mentality, but you have to adapt your leadership style to how your team needs to be led. Give people low-risk tasks where they can learn by failing without impacting their overall success. Freelancing is becoming more and more a part of companies' successes as we move into the future of work. Freelancers are effectively independent contractors with frequent and varying project work. It's often a viable, cost-effective way to get top-level talent. LINKS Matthew Coatney on LinkedIn https://www.matthewcoatney.com/
Matthew Coatney, CIO at Thompson Hine, and author of The Human Cloud sits down and talks about what he sees as the transformation of how we work. According to Coatney, freelancing and project-based work (The Human Cloud) combined with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (The Machine Cloud) will soon disrupt the way we deliver work. Law firms will not be exempt from this disruption. Matters are really just projects. Contract attorneys are freelancers. According to some experts, 80% of work to be done by organizations in the 2030s will be project-based work. And AI and ML will eat into the other 20%. Coatney says that we are missing out on an opportunity if we are not preparing for this reality. We asked how life as a CIO has changed over the past couple of decades for a CIO in a law firm and Coatney says that a CIO of 2000 would have culture shock if they were to be transported to today. CIOs are still the brand ambassadors of the IT departments, but Chief Technology Officers and Chief Data Officers are making their way into the fold to help offload some of the overwhelming responsibility that many of today's CIOs find falls on their shoulders. Matt also co-hosts The Human Cloud Podcast with Matthew Mottola where they put out twice-weekly episodes diving deeper into these topics. Go check out "The Matthews" on their own pod if you're curious about how the structure of work is going to change. Information Inspirations You may have noticed that we took last week off from this podcast, but we were busy recording other podcasts to fill the void. Greg went on the Legal Value Network's "Off the Clock" podcast and talked with Keith Maziarek of Katten and Percipent's Chad Main about the recent increase of available APIs from a number of legal information vendors. These APIs may very well open the door to a much easier method of pulling data in from vendors directly into internal law firm databases to better prepare firms to handle clients' needs. Marlene hosted an ILTA podcast panel on How Virtual Hearings Altered the Fabric of Dispute Resolution with Florida Circuit Judge Christopher Sprysenski, Trial Consultant with Paul Hastings, Jeremy Cooper, and Jackson Walker Partner, Richard Howell.
