“The biggest challenge in our lifetime is the global market failure we call climate change” – Jeremy Cooper.Jeremy has a radical idea to shake up Australia's superannuation system for climate change progress. With a wide-ranging career spanning over four decades, Jeremy Cooper is a regular commentator on superannuation and retirement income. He was chair of retirement income at Challenger, led the ‘Cooper Review' into the super system, and earlier served as deputy chair of the corporate watchdog ASIC.Superannuation, with its long-term investment view, necessarily requires a transition to a sustainable economy to safeguard retirements – especially for the many members set to live to the end of the century. And according to Jeremy, his plan is certainly achievable.Join Senior Journalist Rose Mary Petrass to find out how.

This Day in Legal History: Civil Rights Act of 1875On March 1, 1875, a significant milestone in the journey toward civil rights in the United States was reached with the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1875. This groundbreaking legislation aimed to eliminate racial discrimination in public accommodations, such as inns, public conveyances, theaters, and other places of public amusement, declaring that all persons, regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude, were entitled to the full and equal enjoyment of these facilities. The Act represented a bold step towards equality, affirming the rights of African Americans and other minorities to access public services and spaces without discrimination. However, this progressive movement faced a severe setback in 1883 when the Supreme Court, in a series of decisions collectively known as the Civil Rights Cases, declared the Civil Rights Act of 1875 unconstitutional. The Court argued that the Act exceeded the powers granted to Congress by the 13th and 14th Amendments, stating that the federal government could not regulate the conduct of individuals or private businesses. This ruling effectively removed the protections afforded by the 1875 Act, leaving African Americans and other minorities vulnerable to segregation and discrimination in public accommodations for decades to come. The Supreme Court's decision underscored the limitations of the federal government's ability to intervene in matters of racial discrimination in the private sector, a stance that persisted until the civil rights movement of the 20th century. It wasn't until 1957 that Congress would pass another piece of civil rights legislation, marking a long hiatus in the legislative battle against racial discrimination. The 1883 ruling and the ensuing period of legislative inaction highlight the challenges faced in the pursuit of equality and justice, demonstrating the complex interplay between law, society, and the fight for civil rights in America.Elon Musk has initiated legal action against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, accusing them of deviating from the organization's foundational objective of prioritizing humanity's welfare over profit. Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI who has since divested his stake, asserts that OpenAI's partnership with Microsoft Corp has led the AI startup away from its commitment to open-source technology development, aligning instead with corporate interests. This lawsuit highlights Musk's ongoing concerns about artificial intelligence's potential dangers, especially in the context of the rapid advancements and widespread adoption triggered by OpenAI's ChatGPT. Despite claiming to uphold a charter focused on the broad benefit of humanity, Musk argues that OpenAI has effectively become a "closed-source de facto subsidiary" of Microsoft, betraying its original mission. The legal challenge also scrutinizes the reorganization of OpenAI's leadership, particularly the events surrounding Altman's brief removal and subsequent reinstatement as CEO, which Musk attributes to a collusion between Altman, OpenAI President Greg Brockman, and Microsoft. This shift in governance, according to Musk, replaced a board previously dedicated to AI ethics and governance with individuals more oriented towards profit-making and political connections. The lawsuit emerges amid a context where OpenAI's innovations, like ChatGPT and GPT-4, have propelled AI integration across various industries, with Microsoft leading the charge in leveraging these technologies for its services. Musk's legal action not only spotlights a significant rift within the AI community but also signals potential ramifications for OpenAI's future direction and Microsoft's burgeoning AI ambitions.Musk Sues OpenAI, Altman for Breaching Founding Mission (1)In Georgia, a judge is scheduled to preside over a critical hearing concerning former U.S. President Donald Trump's attempt to disqualify the prosecutor, Fani Willis, in his election interference case. This motion stems from Willis' undisclosed affair with special prosecutor Nathan Wade, which Trump and his co-defendants argue represents a conflict of interest. Trump, leading the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, faces charges of attempting to unlawfully influence Georgia officials to reverse his 2020 election defeat. Despite pleading not guilty alongside 14 others, a potential disqualification of Willis could introduce significant delays into an already complex racketeering case, though it would not necessarily terminate the proceedings.During recent hearings, Willis acknowledged the affair with Wade but disputed allegations regarding its timing and impact on the case. The controversy surfaced after a defense lawyer for a Trump co-defendant cited the relationship as a conflict of interest that unjustly benefited Wade. Despite the defense's accusation of deceit regarding the affair's onset, Willis and Wade maintain that their relationship commenced post-hiring, asserting its irrelevance to the case's integrity. Moreover, Trump is entangled in three additional criminal cases, including allegations of hush money payments, efforts to contest the 2020 election outcome, and mishandling classified documents. His legal challenges are further complicated by debates over the trial dates and potential presidential immunity. Trump contends that these legal battles are politically motivated attempts to thwart his political aspirations, emphasizing the unique vulnerability of the state court case in Georgia to his potential presidential powers, unlike the federal cases.Judge in Trump Georgia criminal case to hear arguments over bid to disqualify prosecutor | ReutersIn Colorado, a significant sentencing is forthcoming for Peter Cichuniec, a paramedic found guilty in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain. McClain, a young Black man, tragically lost his life after a police encounter involving a chokehold, followed by medics administering a potent sedative. Cichuniec, convicted of criminally negligent homicide, potentially faces up to 16 years in prison, marking a rare instance where paramedics have been held accountable in court for their actions during an emergency response. His colleague, Jeremy Cooper, also guilty of the same charge, awaits sentencing later in April. This case, the last in a series of trials stemming from McClain's death, underlines the legal and societal repercussions following the incident, which initially led to no charges against the involved parties. It was not until the global outcry after George Floyd's murder in 2020 that Colorado's Governor Jared Polis initiated a re-examination of the case, culminating in the 2021 indictment of the officers and paramedics by a state grand jury.McClain's encounter with the police on a warm August night in 2019, flagged for wearing a ski mask and appearing suspicious, quickly escalated to a fatal confrontation. The updated autopsy report in 2021 attributed his death to complications from the administered ketamine, contrary to the initial "undetermined" cause. This legal and moral saga underscores the renewed scrutiny on law enforcement and medical response practices, especially in interactions with Black individuals, reflecting a broader call for justice and accountability in the wake of national protests against racial injustice.Colorado judge to sentence paramedic for Elijah McClain killing | ReutersThis week's closing theme is by Frédéric Chopin.Today marks the birthday of Chopin, the Polish composer and pianist who remains one of the most celebrated figures in classical music, renowned for his emotional depth, technical precision, and revolutionary approach to the piano. Born on March 1, 1810, Chopin has left an indelible mark on the world of music with his romantic compositions that blend technical mastery with lyrical beauty. His works, primarily composed for solo piano, have captivated audiences and performers alike with their expressive intensity and innovative use of the instrument's capabilities.Chopin was not only a composer but also an extraordinary pianist, known for his unique ability to convey emotion through music. His compositions, characterized by their nuanced dynamics and intricate melodies, continue to challenge and inspire pianists worldwide. Despite battling health issues throughout his life, Chopin's output was prolific, contributing vastly to the piano repertoire with nocturnes, polonaises, mazurkas, and ballades that explore the full range of human emotion. As we celebrate Chopin's birthday, it's fitting to highlight one of his most beloved pieces, the "Fantaisie-Impromptu" in C-sharp minor, Op. 66. Composed in 1834 but published posthumously in 1855, this piece exemplifies Chopin's ability to fuse technical brilliance with deep emotional expression. The "Fantaisie-Impromptu" is a whirlwind of passion and virtuosity, its outer sections marked by rapid fingerwork and ardent melodies, surrounding a serene, lyrical middle section that provides a moment of reflective calm. This piece, with its contrasting moods and technical demands, encapsulates the essence of Chopin's musical genius. As we close out the week, let the "Fantaisie-Impromptu" serve as a reminder of Chopin's enduring legacy, a celebration of his life and contributions to the world of music on his birthday. It's a piece that continues to inspire and move listeners, embodying the spirit of one of the greatest composers to have ever graced the art of music.Without further ado, Frédéric Chopin's “Fantaisie-Impromptu” in C-sharp Minor, Op. 66. This week the ghouls discuss Philip Ridley's 1990 film, The Reflecting Skin. It's a weird one! From wiki: “The Reflecting Skin is a 1990 British-Canadian dramatic horror film written and directed by Philip Ridley and starring Jeremy Cooper, Viggo Mortensen and Lindsay Duncan. Described by its director as a "mythical interpretation" of childhood,[4] the film weaves elements of vampirism, surrealism, black comedy, symbolism, and religious zealotry throughout its narrative about the perceptions and fantasies of an impressionable young boy in 1950s America. The Reflecting Skin places the majority of its action outdoors around the dilapidated farms and in the wheat fields of Idaho shot in idyllic sunlight which belies the dark secrets of the characters and plot.”They also discuss The Cure, Mr. Klein, Alain Delon, Europe, Europa, Udo Kier, Saltburn, Promising Young Woman, Priscilla, Sofia Coppola, Terrence Malick, Margot Tenenbaum, Mike Leigh, Weyes Blood, Flannery O' Connor, David Lynch, Roger Ebert, Mario Bava, and more! Guys, I hope this episode makes Greta Thunberg proud. I'm joined today by Dr. Mike Gow and Marcus McLeod, who basically have started this initiative, this free initiative for us all called Net Zero dentistry. I think it's a great idea. I'm fully in support of it, I want you to listen to this episode so badly. So you can implement something like for example, when I recorded with these gents, I made a promise to walk to work every day. So it doesn't have to be just like purely dental reducing plastic, which obviously we're gonna cover all that in this episode, what we can do at the workplace to be greener, even thinking outside the box. But what can we do in our lives having a meat free day, walking, being mindful of our energy consumption? All these things are so important. We shouldn't have to wait for two Taco to have these kinds of discussions. But here we are. It's a start. And also on the same evening, just a slight little tangent on the same evening. I also met Jeremy Cooper and he was talking about confidential and the mental health aspects of dentistry and the sad areas,

Matthew Coatney, CIO at Thompson Hine, and author of The Human Cloud sits down and talks about what he sees as the transformation of how we work. According to Coatney, freelancing and project-based work (The Human Cloud) combined with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (The Machine Cloud) will soon disrupt the way we deliver work. Law firms will not be exempt from this disruption. Matters are really just projects. Contract attorneys are freelancers. According to some experts, 80% of work to be done by organizations in the 2030s will be project-based work. And AI and ML will eat into the other 20%. Coatney says that we are missing out on an opportunity if we are not preparing for this reality. We asked how life as a CIO has changed over the past couple of decades for a CIO in a law firm and Coatney says that a CIO of 2000 would have culture shock if they were to be transported to today. CIOs are still the brand ambassadors of the IT departments, but Chief Technology Officers and Chief Data Officers are making their way into the fold to help offload some of the overwhelming responsibility that many of today's CIOs find falls on their shoulders. Matt also co-hosts The Human Cloud Podcast with Matthew Mottola where they put out twice-weekly episodes diving deeper into these topics. Go check out "The Matthews" on their own pod if you're curious about how the structure of work is going to change. These APIs may very well open the door to a much easier method of pulling data in from vendors directly into internal law firm databases to better prepare firms to handle clients' needs. "The Mechanic" The Blade Dive Episode 18 - We are joined by John Swartz. A Cape Cod, Massachusetts native that moved to South Lake Tahoe with his family at a young age. Skiing was a passion, but his interest in cars, motorbikes and heavy equipment quickly took over. Swartz has spent decades in the Snow Industry. Successfully establishing Bombardier's shop in Reno, Nevada, Swartz would eventually be influential in developing equipment for Prinoth and the evolution of the Terrain Park Snowcat, while working with brands like Snow Park Technologies. Skiing for $1 was a time to be alive, but John Swartz earned that cheap priced ticket by contributing to work needed around home, specifically shoveling snow. In time, Swartz would take a job at a Chevy dealership, working whenever, for whatever they would pay, in order to advance his mechanical knowledge. Still interested in Snow Sports, Swartz began to realize that flat rate work didn't pay and fortunately was offered a job at Heavenly's shop, working on their machines, specifically Snowcats.....the rest is history.Swartz would go on to write 'the book' on how to 'demo' a Snowcat, and work with people such as Mike Binnell, Eric Rosenwald, Chris Gunnarson, Jeremy Cooper, instrumental in developing and pushing Terrain Park Snowcat design to where it is today. Swartz would spend time with other operators in an effort to realize best practices, shop management, pre and post check out and assess the process, if any, as to how material was moved. Thus, leading to his definition of the heavy handed and the light handed operator. Swartz's mechanical background has him really advocating for communication between the operator and the machine as well as the operator and the mechanic. Swartz is a big believer in reading the operators manual in an effort to familiarize yourself with terminology to ensure that next layer of operational expertise and finesse. Episode 18 is an in depth mechanical conversation that hasn't happened on The Blade Dive until now, with John Swartz. The 'Special Guest' and 'Push Road 'questions, are true measures of just how interested people are in John Swartz's mechanical perspective. Swartz is one of the nicest people you'll meet in the Snow Industry and he knows his shit. We discuss what it's like to have successes and failures while providing a service as a vendor. “For The Love Of The Game” - The Blade Dive Podcast, Episode 11 we are joined by Jeremy Cooper. A giant in the snow industry, Cooper has always been passionate about progression. Whether it's people, Terrain Parks or his own life... the current local to Utah from Lovettesville, Virginia is not afraid to step outside of the box in order to advance programs and brands that he has led such as June Mountain Terrain Parks, I Ride Park City, Snowbasin Terrain Parks and Boyne Resorts. Growing up, taking childhood family ski trips to places like Seven Springs, Pennsylvania or Snowshoe, West Virginia, Jeremy Cooper was seeing first hand just how captivating the mountains can be. Off the snow, Coopers passion for Baseball developed, right along side an interest in skiing. Coopers weekend warrior vibe for skiing continued at White Tail Resort, Pennsylvania, during High School, and from there the passion for skiing only grew . As a last minute adventure across country, in 1998, Cooper applied for a job as an Alpine Groomer with Vail, Colorado and was hired as a rookie operator. Not totally in love with the job, but absolutely hooked on operating heavy equipment, Cooper moved back to Virginia that Spring, to run dump trucks and rock crusher units. Fast forward to 2002 and a Marketing / Print Ad for Mammoth Mountain, California.... this sparks for Jeremy Cooper, his next idea for a trip across country with his brother, mapping out not only the road, but housing and a job. Cooper's season at Vail helped him land an opportunity grooming at Mammoth Mountain, under Clifford Mann and Oren Tanzer as a co-managed, Snow Surfaces Department. During Cooper's time at Mammoth, he contributed to projects like Superpark and the Orage Masters, amongst big name operators such as Peter Colombo, Joe Genovese & Mike Gerstner. Cooper went on to spend time operating at Falls Creek, Australia, and while down under, would help build the then signature event in the country, Style Wars. June Mountain, California and then Park City Mountain Resort, Utah would eventually become Terrain Park canvases for Jeremy Cooper, not only for building features, but for the recruitment and development of employees who would go on to pursue passions of their own, within the snow industry. With events such as Women's Superpark, Grenade Games, Holy Bowly and The Launch, as well as managing the Park City All Star team, the caliber of athlete and quality of people around Cooper would eventually help him rebound after his position was made redundant during the Vail acquisition of Park City Mountain Resort. Jeremy Cooper is currently the Vice President of Mountain Sports Development for Boyne Resorts but that heavy hitter title doesn't mean he won't pick up a rake or install snowmaking pipe, in fact it's quite the opposite. Episode 11 is a deep dive into the journey of Coopers awe inspiring career. An incredible storyteller, Cooper discusses his time in Mammoth, living in mountain towns, detailed memories of Australia, his passion for Baseball as well as what it's like to surround yourself with like minded positive people. A believer and straight up advocate for team work, Cooper is currently most excited about mentoring the next generation of operators. He comes from the land down under... The Blade Dive Podcast, Episode 4, we are joined by Reuben “Reubs” Cameron, an iconic Aussie operator that is passionate to the core and does not let anything stand in his way of building and managing large scale Terrain Parks and projects, within the industry.Growing up in Brisbane, Australia....Reuben Cameron was hooked on Action Sports at a very young age. While investing his time BMX & Surfing, Cameron had his first on snow experience and was immediately obsessed! Learning that his brother purchased a Snowboard, Cameron took the leap and dove into Snowboarding, capitalizing on resorts only a few hours down the road at Falls Creek and Mt. Hotham, New South Wales, Australia. Spending his first season employed as a Lift Operator at Mt. Hotham, Cameron realized that Falls Creek had the Terrain Parks he wanted to ride and utilized the Helicopter link to access them, until he landed a job on the Park Crew. Once onboard Falls Creek's Terrain Park program, Reuben Cameron built relationships with highly credited and influential operators such as Jeremy Cooper, Mike Gerstner & Sam Poffley and saw a future in the industry, operating equipment. With inspiration from Poffley, Cameron approached the Mountain Manager and was told to pretty much, walk the talk! Cameron began riding along with operators at Falls Creek and logged a few solo hours behind the sticks. Cameron also realized that many operators had misconceptions regarding the landscape and weather that the Southern Hemisphere had and continues to offer. This presented priceless learning experiences for those committed to investing time operating in Australia. Cameron's first full season operating a Snowcat was spent in Vail, Colorado, and this experience quickly showed him that in order to gain good experience it required him to start with the basis of a solid foundation. It was his time at Vail that humbled Cameron's ego and set things in motion for a profound return to Falls Creek, re-joining Poffley, only to dive deeper into his skills as an operator and expanded his knowledge. Cameron has since held Terrain Operating positions at resorts such as June Mountain, CA , Perisher, AUS, Thredbo, AUS and has been a part of build projects like Women's Superpark, The One Hit Wonder Downunder, Grenade Games, Matchstick Productions photo/video shoots. Cameron has been fortunate enough to have travelled the world building Terrain Parks, including countries like Norway & China. Because of his appreciation for properly building a solid understanding of Snowcat operations, Cameron is a firm believer in sharing the knowledge and takes great pride in helping others. Currently residing in the coastal surfing mecca that is home to the legendary Bells Beach, Torquay, Victoria, AUS and enjoying the beautiful Australian Summers, Cameron values his time with his 2 children but is always looking forward to Winter and being back on snow.Enjoy... and if you're in the machine, go ahead and TURN THE VOLUME UP! This was not written by a Baptist pastor. The author of the famous poem is credited as Clement Clarke Moore, an Episcopalian as well as a writer and professor. The poem first appeared on December 23, 1823 in the newspaper with no name attached. There is controversy over authorship as the family of Henry Livingston, Jr claimed that their father had recited to them the poem 15 years before it was published in the paper.

Guest: Jeremy Cooper, Chairman of Retirement Income, Challenger Ltd. 10 years ago, Jeremy Cooper, now Chairman of Retirement Income at Challenger, Chaired the Federal Government's Super System Review, commonly known as the Cooper Review. With the final report from the Banking Royal Commission due to be released in a couple of days, we took the opportunity to talk to Jeremy about the current state retirement in Australia. “Retirees are well aware of increasing life expectancies, and we're in an environment where self-provision is the order of the day. There are not a lot of people who aspire to living solely on the aged pension. So, they're underspending – they're being too frugal. They're doing this because in our system, we're effectively asking them to self-insure.” In this episode of The Rules of Investing, we discuss what worked and what didn't from the Cooper Review, his take on the Banking Royal Commission, and the investment risks that matter to retirees.

“When you actually stare in the face of the amount of the money that is going to sustain you for the rest of your retirement your willingness to take risks with that amount is incredibly different to a 40 year old who still has salary to go back to if something goes wrong with their investments.” Jeremy Cooper, Chairman, Retirement Income, Challenger
