I've been listening to the music of Rafael Anton Irisarri for a long time. The oldest album of his that I have is 2007's Daydreaming. I'm listening to it as I type this and wow, I'd forgotten how excellent it is. His music has changed a bit since then - now using drones, symphonic washes, tape loops, layers of distortion and "bleached out textures." So I was excited when he offered to do a guest mix. Um, yes please! This mix is everything that I love about guest mixes because it takes twists and turns that I normally do not so it kept me engaged to whole way through. Here's what Rafael has to say about this set: "I crafted this mix as Spring gently dissolves into Summer, drawing inspiration from perennial favorites like Arvo Pärt and Harold Budd. It features the work of many dear friends and colleagues such as Sylvain Chauveau and Federico Durand, as well as some favorite tracks I've mastered at my Black Knoll Studio in New York. This includes pieces from William Basinski, Eluvium, Michael Muller, and Julia Kent, along with contributions from Grand River, Animated Matter (Hannah Elizabeth Cox), Concepción Huerta, Christina Giannone, Pepo Galán, and Karen Vogt. Adding a personal touch, I've included a piece from my latest album, released on my newly minted Black Knoll Editions, in collaboration with the esteemed Italian producer Abul Mogard. There's also a special collaborative piece I created with the brilliant Julianna Barwick a couple of years ago. Hope you enjoy! Looking forward to playing some shows this summer, starting in Italy on July 7th with Abul Mogard in Rome at Halfdie Festival, then later on September 14 at Ametric Festival in Chania, Greece. Stay tuned for more announcements by following on Instagram @blackknoll or at www.irisarri.org." Thanks Rafael for this amazing mix!
"Over the last few months i have been obsessively listening to the music of Phillip Jeck and Janek Schaefer again, whilst becoming more comfortable building songs and textures outside of a DAW environment. Working with the original field recording of train station sounds, sirens, bells and the doppler effect present, I decided to use a pared-down recording set up for the Cities and Memory Autumn Project. "I fed the original recording into a Soma Labs COSMOS to achieve drift and blur (and chaos) I used a basic small sine wave generator to anchor the drift and blur and add some bass tones. These basic tracks were fed into an old sampler to layer and shape. Finally I recorded some tongue drum and prepared guitar scrapings using a telephone mic (maximum lo-fi!) over the top. "This was then resampled, played live in the sampler and recording to my Zoom H4N. I produced a number of different recording variations. Three were chosen at random, cut to the same length, layered on top of each other and this became the final track." Coimbra B station warning bells reimagined by Andy Billington.

Midterms continue this week on My Little Underground! Conor Rooney returns for our annual conversation of our favorite full length albums from January to June. Conor was really into the releases from Soul Glo (as did I), Angel Olsen, William Basinski & Janek Schaefer, Alabaster dePlume, and Spoon. As for myself, I talk up long players from Ravyn Lenae, Czarface, Jeanines, Combo Chimbita, and Benny The Butcher. I also get Conor's thoughts on the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Perfume Genius collaboration and he gets my opinion of the strange but understandable rollout of the new Black Star album. DC’s Mike James and Mollie Ames discuss: Browns fire Hue Jackson ("Fucking off Cleveland head coaches")! (Part 1 of the Podcast only content) The Cavs firing of Lue, and how drama candy rots your brain. Chanting "Yankees Suck" after beating the Dodgers to win the World Series is really all the proof you need that Boston fans are the worst. Cringing at the mere idea of sports talk radio shows while hosting a show that talk sports on the radio, often finds Mike in awkward social positions. Mollie offers strong advice on how to get what you want at a grocery store. (Part 2 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 1:17:00 mark) Let Me Tell You A Story: Lachlan MacKinnon’s “Never Forget The Golden State Warriors Blew It” (begins at the 1:29:00 mark) "Chubb-a-lubba-dub-dub"? Ugh. Finding perspective in just how great Cleveland is, by leaving Cleveland. "Shit" and "Fuck", remembering Rutger Hauer, and being sure to clean butt finger. (Part 3 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:11:00 mark) Inappropriately named businesses are the best. When you're not a local the only option is to be a tourist until you figure that shit out for yourself: Two different perspectives about a recent trip to NYC. Mollie’s PuhFooFuh Spotlight Part 7: "Steeler Man", and yet another reason to be envious of Pittsburgh fans and all that winning. (Part 4 of the Podcast only content, begins at the 2:40:00 mark) Philip Glass at 81 ones old is still way cooler than you. Since it's Halloween, talking about movies that scare the most shit out of you. All this and so much more on this episode of the Defend Cleveland Podcast. Enjoy~ Check out Lachlan MacKinnon’s best selling book, ‘Let Me Tell You A Story: Small Stories Of A Large Family’! Thank you to KidForce Pinball for sponsoring the podcast, 91.1-FM WRUW Cleveland for being home to the show, engineer extraordinaire Mollie Ames, and to the city that inspires us, Cleveland, Ohio. Your recommended listening for the week is Janek Schaefer's newest release “What Light There Is Tells Us Nothing” which is available via Temporary Residence. This mix was started because of one new tune - "Witch Season" from the new Infraction release by Offthesky and Pleq. I love that track and what better way to tell people about it than a new mix. With that song as a starting point things fell into place very nicely. All the music in the mix is fairly recent. Most is from 2014 or 2015 with the exception of the cut from The New Honey Shade which is from 2011. The mix as a whole is pretty straight forward ambient. Straight forward but awesome ambient. I love the tracks from dirk serries, tonepoet, The Circular Ruins, Janek Schaefer, Spheruleus...oh heck, I adore every cut in this mix. All of the albums used in this mix are available on Bandcamp so I'll link to them here in order of appearance in the mix... https://infraction.bandcamp.com/album/a-thousand-fields https://tonefloatikon.bandcamp.com/album/streams-of-consciousness-152401 https://dekorder.bandcamp.com/album/unfolding-luxury-beyond-the-city-of-dreams https://scissortail.bandcamp.com/album/ozark-dream https://dataobscura.bandcamp.com/album/full-circle https://coppicehalifax.bandcamp.com/album/lowlights https://experimentsinsilence.bandcamp.com/ https://manwatchingthestars.bandcamp.com/album/dusk https://tonepoet.bandcamp.com/album/headspace https://spheruleus.bandcamp.com/album/chronota Enjoy T R A C K L I S T : 00:00 Offthesky and Pleq - Witch Season 04:57 dirk serries - cloud surface break 11:11 Janek Schaefer - Beyond 16:16 The New Honey Shade - Sun is Elixir 19:00 The Circular Ruins - Full Circle 27:30 Coppice Halifax - lowlights 34:05 Experiments in Silence - duskforms 38:50 Man Watching the Stars - Midday 49:40 tonepoet - Showers of Lilac 54:00 Spheruleus - The Railroad 1:01:27 Experiments in Silence - Nascent Light 1:06:53 end
Looking back over the last six years of mixes, the piano has been the featured instrument in many of the the tracks. I guess it goes all the way back to Ambient #1 : Music for Airports. The piano is a perfect instrument for the contemplative, ambient music in the mixes found here. As far as I can tell, I've done four mixes devoted exclusively to the piano. They are... 1) Piano Mix 2) Piano Mix 2007 3) Antique Sunlight 4) pno 2010 This fifth installment, "asleep at the piano," is very similar to the others. Although this one may be a bit more ambient in nature. I was happy to squeeze in two tracks related to Harry Towel, the man behind the brilliant net label Audio Gourmet. The first by Talvihorros is from the 2011 Audio Gourmet release "Just a Moment" which you can find here...Just a Moment. The other cut is from Harry's recording artist guise, Spheruleus. The track, Blueprint, is from his album on Tessellate Recordings called Cyanometry. You can find that one here...Cyanometry at Bandcamp. You can find some of Harry's excellent mixes on Mixcloud here...Spheruleus on Mixcloud and here...Groundingsounds on Mixcloud. Enjoy. Sound artist Janek Schaefer gives the scratches and pops of vinyl records some respect. Produced by Michael Raphael.
This podcast features a set that I did for a sQuareOne party at the Enormous Room in Cambridge. I was representing Non-Event, so — just to make things difficult for myself — the set consists solely of music by artists who have played Non-Events in the past. There is a lot of scratchy vinyl and much to enjoy on this latest program, which is the first non-special edition podcast in quite some time. Enjoy! Note: In the podcast, I neglect to mention that "Sunny-Side Up" is a duo between Christian Marclay and Gunter Muller. Very bad form. Consider yourself fully informed now.
