They say fortune favors the bold, and that's definitely the case for Brooke Janousek. After decades in the marketing industry, she decided to strike out on her own and needed to take any opportunity she could get to help her business grow. So she took her shot by asking Sara Blakely's (founder of SPANX) husband, during his talk, in front of 800 people, for a chance to meet her. According to Brooke, you need to be bold in your own business- “if you don't have a seat at the table, you need to make one.” Those bold moves turned her into a successful fractional CMO. And if you're wondering if this path is right for you, you need to listen! Top Takeaways Fractional leaders are becoming increasingly popular. They allow companies to bring on a high level of expertise without having to hire a 6-figure salary employee. You build credibility as a fractional leader by showing results. If you can clearly articulate results to a potential client, you'll get hired. This all goes back to being bold. If there's something you think you should do, and it makes you uncomfortable, it's probably the right move. Brooke says, “ asking is overthinking” and I love that. Bespoken Spirits says they can make a delicious whiskey in days instead of years, while using a fraction of the wood and water of traditional methods. Sounds like voodoo to me, but founders Stu Aaron and Martin Janousek claim their spirits are voodoo-free. They've taken the art of distilling and aging spirits and added some science to it. Instead of using barrels, they use "micro-staves" plus some heat and pressure to produce the desired result. They offer your traditional bourbon, rye, and rum but they can get a bit more creative from there. When the pandemic had breweries sitting on stocks of unsold beer, Bespoken worked with brewers to turn that beer into spirits. They distilled the brew then worked with their customers to craft the exact aroma, color, and taste they were going for. We sampled a couple of these beer-its while we talked with Martin and Janousek. They offered pleasant aromas of caramel, tropical fruit, butter, floral notes and delivered these flavors as well. We did feel the woody notes in each offering were a bit sharp. Unfortunately, we didn't sample the bourbon or rye to make a comparison against ones made in the traditional method. One note, although they do process their bourbon the same as all of their other spirits, it does spend 3 months in barrels prior to that so it is actually bourbon. Bespoken has stacked up several medals for their spirits, so their method must be working. We'll have to keep an eye out for the bourbon and rye so we can really test them out.
In this Episode of The Bourbon Life Podcast, Matt and Mark spend some time hanging out with Stu Aaron and Martin Janousek, Co-Founders of Bespoken Spirits. The guys talk with Stu and Martin about their diverse backgrounds and how they got into the whiskey business, the amazing technology that they've developed that allows them to create mature whiskies in a fraction of the time required by traditional methods of whiskey production, and how their process could save distillers and non-distilling producers a lot of time, money, and headaches. They also taste and review Bespoken Spirits' Whiskey Distilled From Bourbon Mash, their Straight Bourbon, and their Rye Whiskey. This Episode of The Bourbon Life Podcast is sponsored by The Stave Restaurant in Millville, KY and Three Chord Bourbon. In this episode, we’re joined by Stu Aaron and Martin Janousek, the co-founders of Bespoken Spirits, a modern distilling company which claims that it can precisely tailor spirits to a desired aroma, color and taste. Using proprietary technology, Bespoken’s production process can be completed in a matter of days as opposed to traditional distilling and aging methods which typically take years. The company’s business model is two-fold: Bespoken works with small- and mid-sized distillers to craft new products in an accelerated time frame, and also markets a line of branded products. In October, Bespoken also announced a $2.6 million seed funding round, led by noted Silicon Valley investor T.J. Rodgers and baseball icon Derek Jeter who praised the company’s disruptive vision and its focus on sustainability. Despite significant interest in Bespoken’s technology, there is some skepticism about the company among industry insiders and traditionalists. As part of our conversation, Aaron and Janousek discussed how they are attempting to win over stakeholders and gatekeepers by communicating the benefits of their brand and business. They also explained why they prepared for years before launching the company, how they validated their process and products and why they described Bespoken as an enabler of change, rather than change itself. Show notes: 0:41: It’s A Togroni, Jabroni. And Why Protein Donuts + Adaptogenic Sparkling Teas = WINNERS. -- The hosts chatted about John Craven’s recent attempt at a nip-centric cocktail and Nordic-inspired (but not really) cold-pressed juices, and also shared insights and a behind-the-scenes examination of the recently held New Beverage Showdown and NOSH Pitch Slam competitions. They also congratulated a juice shot brand that recently landed $14.5 million in a new funding round, discussed a new video series produced by NOSH and Mondelez’s SnackFutures innovation unit and shared their thoughts on a few new products to arrive at the office, including boozy cookies, sprouted almonds and sunflower butter sweets. 25:12: Interview: Stu Aaron and Martin Janousek, Co-Founders, Bespoken Spirits -- Aaron and Janousek spoke with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif about their backgrounds in the energy industry, how their interest in high quality spirits sparked the inspiration behind Bespoken and how their complementary skill sets have supported the company’s launch and development. They also discussed how Bespoken is differentiated from other rapid aged spirits companies, the cost and sustainability benefits of their technology and how their process compares to traditional distilling processes, how they define “modern consumers” and why the cohort is demanding products like Bespoken’s. Later, Aaron and Janousek explained why they were patient with the rollout of the company’s spirit line and how they address the traditional storytelling element common to the promotion of spirits. Brands in this episode: Ginsation, Elite Sweets, Kite, Smooth Pops, Kindroot, Everripe, Taika, Kaylee’s Culture, So Good So You, CaPao, Dirt Kitchen, Ruckus & Co., Bahlsen, Baileys, Daily Crunch Snacks, Hlth Punk, A Dozen Cousins, Free2Be, Joolies, Reese’s, Justin’s
