In today's episode, I sit down with Josh Luber, the co-founder of StockX and Fanatics Collectibles, to talk about what it really means to build a third act after creating two major successes. Josh shares how financial freedom and a grounded home life have shifted his relationship to pressure and how Ghostwrite, his latest venture in collectible toys, reflects a more personal vision. We talk about creating culture through scarcity, the evolution of the “hype economy,” and the strange power of nostalgia in shaping billion-dollar ideas. Josh also opens up about doing it solo this time, and why control—not capital—is what really fuels him now.
Today, I'm sharing my conversation with Josh Luber of Ghostwrite and StockX fame, which first aired on Shopify Masters just a few weeks ago. Josh has spent his career in the hype economy, building StockX and Fanatics Collectibles. Now, he's using his experience to create a modern-day collectible through his toy company, ‘Ghostwrite'. Being the potential penultimate podcast episode of The Card Diary by Hobby S. Thompson, I thought a lot about who I wanted as its potential last guest on this podcast. However, the answer was right in front of my face, as Nick Andrews (on IG @bostoncardhunter and one half of The @SportCardMadness Podcast) is currently at the top of everyone's Instagram feeds. He is a podcaster, YouTuber, Instagram content creator, making funny and serious short form and long form content, and even recently made a mini documentary on the life of @Fanatics CEO, Michael Rubin.A lot of people first got to know him about the CT scanning issue with sealed wax, but we did not talk about that topic much. Instead, by listening to this podcast episode, you will learn who Nick was before he became the Boston Card Hunter, what he thinks about bounties and the most recent $30,000 bounty for the Caitlin Clark 1/1 from ghostwrite (Josh Luber's newest company) by Dave & Adam's. Nick also shares whether he thinks collective action could work in The Hobby, and what he thinks about people who tell him that he should stay in his lane. Regardless of what you think about him, he is definitely relevant in The Hobby and in this attention economy, he has your attention.Easily one of my favorite episodes to record, hope you enjoy it! - DennyHere is a link to Nick's YouTube about Michael Rubin:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpCA2-DBFnwHere is a link to the New York Times article about the CT scanning issue with sealed wax: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5987857/2024/12/12/trading-cards-sports-collectibles-scanners-ethics/Here is a link to Dave & Adam's website publicizing the $30,000 bounty for the Caitlin Clark 1/1 ghostwrite figurine:https://www.dacardworld.com/blog/new-releases/1-1-caitlin-clark-ghostwrite-wnba-game-face-bounty/ #thehobby #sportscards #baseballcards #basketballcards #footballcards #hockeycards #pokemon #pokemontcg #podcast #hobbypodcast #dennycards #hobbysthompson #thecarddiary #sportscardspodcast #fanatics #bounty #ghostwrite #daveandadams #caitlinclark #joshluber #sportscardmadness #bostoncardhunter --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hobbysthompson/support

A McDonald's Happy Meal shortage. A security guard escort. Guns pulled in a Target parking lot. All of these are caused by a common factor: trading cards. In 2020, a new BOOM began. For the first time, large hedge funds, celebrities like Logan Paul and Steve Aoki, nostalgic millennials, entrepreneurs like Josh Luber, and billionaires scrambled to add sports, Pokémon, and other hot item cards to their collections and portfolios. Over the next two years, the hobby exploded — even causing card grading services to shut down due to overwhelming customer service. This documentary is a character-driven feel good deep dive into the high-stakes, eccentric world of card collecting, following buyers, sellers, card shop owners, graders, online streamers, auctioneers, and more, who all participate in the hobby in their own unique ways. Directed by Morgan Jon Fox, viewers are brought directly into the highs, lows, big gains, and sometimes devastating losses of a century-old hobby that anyone can break into, and some can hit the jackpot with. The trading card industry saw a massive boom in 2020, as people began clearing out garages, storage units, closets, and more to find old trading cards - ranging from sports cards to Pokemon, to garbage-pail kids and everything in between. The hobby has now grown into a multi-million dollar industry, with its very own trading index launching to assess the value of the market. Director Morgan Jon Fox stops by to talk about the pure joy of opening a Topps pack with a Pete Rose Rookie card or finding a Pokemon Charizard Base Set, as well as the thrill of meeting people who share your passion for collectibles and memories. Guest: Scott Cutler, CEO of StockXWhat's the point of climbing a mountain, or heli-skiing in the Swiss Alps, or biking in the Tour de France? StockX CEO Scott Cutler has done all three, and for him, the answer is momentary perspective. “When you're descending, you don't see, but you know what is above,” he says. “You have experienced and have seen what you saw at the peak and you take that with you into the next experience.” He stressed that the pleasure of being at the top is a fleeting incentive to do it again, not the destination; in life, and in our careers, he argues, the journey is about continually facing new challenges and getting brief glimpses from the top.In this episode, Scott and Joubin discuss out-of-touch VCs, the challenges of marketplaces, Josh Luber, Dan Gilbert, almost missing flights, gaining perspective, scary blackberry bushes, work-family balance, daily workouts, sleeping on planes, e-commerce in the U.S. vs. China, and digital ownership. In this episode, we cover: Special shoes (01:07) Scott's past jobs at the NYSE, StubHub, and eBay (05:47) Detroit and frequent flying (10:02) Over-optimizing your time (15:25) Why do you climb a mountain? EPISODE 127 - Clark, Hyung, and Will (who filled in for John again this episode) kick off the show, responding to Josh Luber's recent take that there are too many buying and selling platforms currently out there and a consolidation is needed to create true liquidity and true markets in sports cards with the majority of bidders being able to bid in one place (ie. the equivalent of a main stock exchange.) They discuss whether the marketplace for cards being too fragmented is really a bad thing or just another opportunity to find good deals. Then in Hobby Headlines, the guys talk about the "art of the trade." More specifically, they give tips from past experience on how to make good and successful trades as well as what to expect when trying to make trades, especially at live card shows. The next segment is Overrated/Underrated with Clark giving both Hyung and Will a specific grade (ie. PSA 10, BGS 9.5 True Gem, SGC 10) and trying to determine whether that grade is overrated or underrated. Lastly, they finish the show off with the regular "Pick One" segment where each host names two cards or sets, and then debate which one they would rather invest in. The pairs chosen this week include: Zion Williamson Prizm Base Rookie vs. Juan Soto Topps Flagship Rookie; Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Silver Prizm PSA 10 ($550) vs. Luka Doncic Silver Prizm PSA 10 ($1600); Wander Franco Atomic Refractor Bowman Chrome vs. Wander Franco 2022 Topps Chrome Sapphire (PSA 10 for $500) vs Wander Franco 2019 Bowman Chrome Atomic 1st (PSA 10). -------------------------------- CONNECT WITH US! He is also a co-founder of StockX, the world's first ‘Stock Market of Things', where he led the rise from idea to billion-dollar company in less than three years, cementing StockX as the world's leading marketplace for sneakers, apparel, and collectibles. In 2019, Josh stepped down as CEO to focus on StockX's ‘startup within a startup activities', including leading the nascent trading cards vertical. A year later, he left StockX to return to his entrepreneurial roots with the goal of revolutionizing the trading card industry as he's done for sneakers. Before StockX, Josh founded and ran four other startups and, in between each, had varying corporate jobs ranging from IBM strategy consultant to Alston & Bird bankruptcy attorney. How streamlined will the experience be? 9:53 - What should the local cards shops expect from Fanatics? 11:33 - How hard is Fanatics going to push on global expansion? 13:03 - Luber's Passion Project: Culture, Commerce and Finance 13:34 - When should we expect the next Fanatics product releases?

As a 10 year old kid, Josh Luber loved nothing more than trading cards and sneakers. Decades later, Josh has made a career out of these passions, first as the founder of StockX and now as Chief Vision Officer at the recently launched Fanatics Collectibles. I sat down with Josh to learn more about the massive impact that Fanatics has already made in trading cards, his views on pricing and distribution, and the plans he has in the years ahead.
The final part of my wide-ranging conversation with Josh - special thanks to Ray Schulte for helping make it happen, Chris Corbellini of Collectable for the A/V support, and Collectable's CEO Ezra Levine for spearheading the effort to get so many influencers together in Vegas for the MINT Collective.

They discuss whether they agree or disagree on some of his key points including his reason for the hobby boom and subsequent major correction earlier this year. Anyone who listens to the Lefkoe Show knows that the NFL offseason is when we like to have thoughtful conversations with smart, talented, interesting, unique people with an interest in sports. Today, we've got entrepreneur Josh Luber, who describes the legendary rise of StockX, essentially the stock market platform for sneakerheads. Plus, we've got the absolutely hilarious Lil Rel Howery, known for "Get Out," "Uncle Drew," and more, most recently "Bad Trip" on Netflix. He shares his Bulls fandom, some incredible on-set anecdotes with NBA stars, and who is the best trash talker in NBA history. Big thank you to Aflac, and their "The Art of Trash Talk" campaign that brought Lil Rel on the Lefkoe Show today. Tune in later this week for the fifth installment of the NFL Draft Crash Course! In this episode of Behind The Lens with Roger Rojas, we have Josh Luber. Josh co-founded StockX, an online marketplace that was valued at over 1 billion dollars. He managed to turn a childhood passion into a multi-million dollar business, global venture through tried and true methods that'd make your folks proud. He started three other startups before StockX. None of them had anything to do with sneakers, almost intentionally so. He avoided creating any business that was related to sneakers, almost out of fear that it was just an excuse to play with sneakers. It's not a coincidence the business that was, in retrospect, the most successful is one where he finally joined his personal passions with business. -----Listen to more episodes of Behind the Lens with Roger Rojas https://anchor.fm/roger-rojas0
