Elizabeth joins Caitlin to cover 2005's The Skeleton Key. We've got a great monstrous femme figure in The Skeleton Key, and the movie does a good job of exploring the intersections of race, age, gender, and spirituality. We also speculate at it possibly being an influence for Get Out, another horror movie that explores those issues extremely well. Tangents include: DVD bonus features, pizza, blankets, discount stores, flags, posters, animal horror, the haunted house Elizabeth gew up in, and some FMKs.

In this episode, we discuss the hoodoo horror The Skeleton Key (2005), starring Kate Hudson, Gena Rowlands, John Hurt, Peter Sarsgaard and Joy Bryant. Anna is joined by film critic Kelli Weston to discuss the (questionable) merits of the film, its attempts at tacking history, race and ideas of passing and double-speak, as well as the genius of Gena Rowlands, how hoodoo and voodoo are often conflated in horror cinema, and the figure of the conjure woman. *** The Final Girls are a UK-based film collective exploring the intersections of horror film and feminism. To coincide with our season of films and events, Here Be Witches, we will be focusing this first series on exploring all things witchcraft on film. Each episode, we will dive deep into films and TV shows that we can't necessarily screen. The Defence episode. What the hell are the Canucks gonna do back there? The boys break it all down as well as talk about potential trade and signing rumours. The Stanley Cup brewha that's developed between the Blues and Bruins is getting entertaining off the ice as well. Art and I declare WAR on Joy Bryant's stupid opinion when it comes to Dodgeball. Also: - A depressing trip down memory lane. - Benning is gonna talk to Loui. Oooooooh. - Travis is gonna talk to Loui. Ooooooooooooh! - Should the Canucks go after Alex Newhook? - Juolevi should be skating by next week. - Sean Avery is setting Instagram on fire. @Artaronson @Kirbman23 BetweentheStammers@gmail.com

"When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost: A Hip-Hop Feminist Breaks It Down" came out in 1999. It was the age of the video vixen, and feminists were decrying the objectification of women in hip-hop imagery and lyrics. Then Joan Morgan published her groundbreaking book examining the complexities of life as a black woman, feminist, and music lover in the age of hip-hop. This year, the book turns 18. Last month, a new edition was published with a forward by Brittney Cooper and an afterword by Treva Lindsey. It's also just been released as an audio book, read by actor Joy Bryant. It's clearly a work with enduring relevance, but its initial reception wasn't all positive. "There were a lot of elder feminist stateswomen who basically just dismissed the book as, 'this person is not really a feminist because if she was really a feminist, she couldn't possibly love hip hop,'" Morgan says. "So finding my tribe years later - the people who actually find value in the book, has been such a precious gift to me. It's incredible to me that it still has a place in the culture." One member of that tribe is our own Dr. Kaila Story, who first read "Chickenheads" as a college senior. "It made me confirm that I belong in feminism," Doc says. "That I am a feminist. That I can bring my whole self, my entire self, to the professoriate, to my classes, and to the work that I do." Joan Morgan joins us this week to talk about what's changed in black feminism between now and 1999 — and what still needs to.

Mom and I break down nearly every branch of the Braverman family tree as we discuss her favorite TV show, Parenthood. We mostly focus on how the casting, writing, and even music of the show make it such a strong, emotional exploration of a variety of hardships and heartfelt moments in the life of a big family. We spend more time on the moments we can relate to more directly, and my mom shares a lot of insight on how the homemaker priorities of her generation and her mother's are examined in the show. Fans of the show will especially enjoy this ep, and non-fans won't be able to resist checking it out and sharing it with their families. Notes: We neglect to credit Sam Jaeger as Joel, Savannah Paige Rae as Sydney, Max Burkholder as Max, Joy Bryant as Jasmine, Tyree Brown as Jabbar, Sarah Ramos as Haddie, and Xolo Maridueña as Victor. I think we caught everybody else, but just because I couldn't rattle off these names doesn't mean they don't deserve some credit. This didn't make the mic, but Parenthood is a loose adaptation of the 1989 film of the same name and was preceded by a star-studded show that lasted a season in 1990. Thanks to Field Notes Brand for sponsoring and the Chicago Podcast Cooperative for providing sponsors and creating a podcasting community.
