I'd Rather Be Reading
Trailblazing Journalist Lynn Povich on Becoming the First Female Senior Editor of Newsweek and the Legacy of the First Female Class Action Lawsuit It Took to Make that Possible

I'd Rather Be Reading

I'm pulling out the champagne and raising a glass to I'd Rather Be Reading, my passion project and the work of my life, a show that celebrates nonfiction books (and, occasionally, some fiction books and children's books and cookbooks, too) which aired its first episode three years ago today, on June 7, 2021. Happy three-year anniversary, listeners! Our very first episode on the show was a conversation with Lisa Napoli about her book Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR, about, at its core, women in journalism. As such, to tie it all together with a bow today, our anniversary special features a trailblazing woman in journalism: the dynamic Lynn Povich. Simply put, my career would not exist without Lynn's courage. Let's go back in time to the early 1970s. Lynn was working at Newsweek, and at the time, that magazine, like others at the time as well, only hired men as writers. Women did the researching and reporting, but the men got the byline. Lynn writes in her 2012 book The Good Girls Revolt: How the Women of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses and Changed the Workplace that Newsweek had a serious problem—sexism—and that, in her words, “we all accepted it—until we didn't.” Lynn and a group of 46 other women ultimately sued the magazine for sex discrimination, becoming the first women in the media to sue for sex discrimination and taking part in the first female class action suit. Lynn's book, Good Girls Revolt, is the first full account of the Newsweek suit, which, by the way, was later turned into a series on Amazon Prime that I loved. Lynn writes that, prior to the lawsuit, “I don't think it occurred to many of us that we could actually change the system” and continues “in 1970 we challenged the system and changed the conversation in the news media for the women who participated in the lawsuits. The struggle rerouted our lives and bonded us and gave many of us opportunities.” Lynn went on to become Newsweek's first female senior editor in 1975 and had a 25-year career at the magazine; she left it in 1991 and has since become editor-in-chief of Working Woman magazine and managing editor and senior executive producer for MSNBC.com. Lynn is from a famed journalism family, and she edited a book of columns by her father, renowned Washington Post sports journalist Shirley Povich called All Those Mornings…At the Post; her brother, by the way, is Maury Povich, and her sister-in-law is Connie Chung. I'd love to be at that family dinner table! Lynn's husband is also a journalist; his name is Stephen Shepard, and he is the former editor-in-chief of Business Week and founding dean of the graduate school of journalism of the City University of New York. There's no better person I could think of to mark this important day for our show than Lynn Povich, and I'm excited for you to hear from her today. Actress & The Brink Author Jaime Andrews Interview | The Struggle of Addiction and Hollywood On the outskirts of popular culture for over 20 years, Jaime Andrews started acting professionally at the age of 12 at Arena Playhouse on Long Island. Best known for her work as a comedic commentator on TruTV's World's Dumbest, she has been a billboard model (Stoli), an album cover-girl (My Chemical Romance), a columnist (Backstage, New Thinking), a commercial queen (she shipped her pants for K-mart and has hung out with the Geico gecko and Chester Cheetah, among dozens of others), a theater manager (Sacred Fools) and, most recently, an award-winning filmmaker (Division, now available on several platforms). She was a recurring Guest Star on Good Girls Revolt, whose premature cancellation started an online firestorm at the dawn of the Me Too movement. Jaime's memoir, The Brink - about her tumultuous teen years - will be published in 2023, and she has several projects in the works through her production company, jaimation. She is also working on a graphic novel, Cookie & the Monster, adapted from her play which won best show in the Ensemble Theatre category at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Hannah Barefoot is a theatrically trained actress, singer, and dancer originally from Cody, Wyoming. Her first leading role role in the cult favorite, 'The Falls: Testament of Love,' earned her a reputation as a raw and vulnerable dramatic actress early on, while her work in improv developed her comedic chops. She has since starred in many movies and TV shows including King Richard, CSI, Chicago Med, Creepshow, LA's Finest, Criminal Minds, Good Girls Revolt, and many others.  As a singer, Hannah is one half of an indie-folk-rock duo, The Luminous Grey, alongside her husband, Andy Barefoot. Their music has been commissioned and featured in feature films, including two of Hannah's films, and she was recently the lead in renowned choreographer Galen Hook's western musical film, 'There Once Was a Woman.' In this episode, Preston talks with Hannah about what it's like being a Christian in Hollywood. She takes us behind the scenes and discusses her raw and vulnerable perspective on God, life, acting, Hollywood, and how she understands the art of acting in light of the kingdom of God.  Theology in the Raw Conference - Exiles in Babylon At the Theology in the Raw conference, we will be challenged to think like exiles about race, sexuality, gender, critical race theory, hell, transgender identities, climate change, creation care, American politics, and what it means to love your democratic or republican neighbor as yourself. On today's episode we react to the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins who was accidentally shot while on set of the film “Rust”. Details are still emerging and it is unclear whether there was a breakdown of safety protocol, of communication — or perhaps the inexperience of a non union crew — that left Ms. Hutchins and director Joel Souza (who was also injured) unprotected and vulnerable to this tragedy. What we do know is that there are supposed to be checks and balances to keep cast and crew safe. There are also many other ways to deliver explosive effects that do not include “live rounds” in a scene. Joining us to talk about this and other on-set dangers is veteran actor Xander Berkeley (Terminator 2, Heat, A Few Good Men, Taken, Air Force One, Leaving Los Vega, Apollo 13, Candy Man, The Walking Dead, Justified, Nikita) who has been in in many shoot out scenes and has the scars to prove it. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0075359/  Also joining us is Steve Meyers, an Emmy and VES winning Visual Effects Supervisor. Steve began his tenure by taking the helm on the highly successful television series Criminal Minds, which he supervised for the last eight seasons of production. Along the way, he's overseen many other series for FuseFX, including Hell on Wheels, Good Girls Revolt, Mayan's MC, and Hollywood. https://fusefx.com/the-team/ https://www.visualeffectssociety.com  If you feel unsafe on set for any reason, including harassment, send a tip via the IATSE Safety Hotline at 844-422-9273 Lisa and Dean have many questions for these two highly experienced professionals…but most importantly our thoughts go out to Halyna's family. #hernamewashalynahutchins

With April being Stress Awareness Month, country's fresh new face Erin Cosgrove is talking about her own experience with anxiety and mental health, how she copes, how this helped her write her latest release Time To Live and why it is so important to bring awareness to the subject.   Stress Awareness Month is a time to bring awareness to what causes our stress and how we can keep ourselves healthy mentally. “I was in a serious state of depression for 6 months, basically it started as soon as the pandemic started. The stress of everything happening in the world really made my mental state decline,” says Erin. “What helped me most was writing music. Out of all the chaos came my single Time To Live, which was my way of releasing my emotions into a song and telling myself and others that everything will be okay. I wanted to give people as well as myself a sense of hope and inspire people to continue to live their lives rather than hide in fear.”   Throughout the month of April, Erin hopes to encourage those who also may be struggling. She shares that it is incredibly important to recognize the things in your life that are causing you stress, but on the other hand, it is just as important to find those healthy ways to deal with it. “Set aside time every day to put yourself first. I'm an advocate for listening to your own body, taking slow deep breaks, setting routines and short-term goals to start off the day with an accomplishment.”   Stress continues to build for her in another aspect of her life as she gets ready to move over two thousand miles away and relocating from her hometown in CA to Nashville this summer. “I'm so excited to be making this move. Yes, it's very stressful when it comes to packing everything up, including traveling with two cats and a dog. While I do love living in CA, it's time for me to make that move to Nashville to continue doing what I love.”   As Erin gears up to release a lyric video for this song, scheduled to come out later this month, she shares one more perception on the meaning of this song. “Anxiety and depression can happen to anyone regardless of their situation and everyone handles pain differently. In all, be kind to others, there's always hope. It's Time To Live.” Visit Erin Cosgrove at her website and follow along with her on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. Her song Time To Live is available on all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, and more. For more info on stress and ways to cope, visit www.stress.org.   About Erin Cosgrove: Breakthrough country artist Erin Cosgrove has it all. Based in Los Angeles and Nashville, this powerhouse singer, songwriter and actress has made a name for herself with a great social media following. Teaming up with Grammy winning producer Mikal Blue, Erin released her second single The Perfect Place to Start, which became an overnight hit, gaining over 15k Spotify streams in just the first week and premiered on Sirius XM The Highway. She is also an aspiring actress, having appeared in the hit TV show “Parenthood,” along with “Good Girls Revolt,” and USA's reality show “Summer Camp.” Erin has opened for some of the biggest names in country music including A Thousand Horses, Big & Rich, Danielle Bradbery, Love & Theft and Russell Dickerson. She has performed at numerous festivals including the Oakheart Country Music Festival, Paddy Fest and Round Up Country Music Festival in CA as well as performing at the Daytona 500, the Tampa Bay Rays Baseball Stadium and the House of Blues. Whether she's writing, performing, or acting, she feels most at home in front of a crowd or camera. With her powerful vocals, remarkable songwriting and impressive acting, Erin Cosgrove is setting the bar high with the finish line nowhere in sight.

Ladies Night with Anna Camp (The Lovebirds, Pitch Perfect, Perfect Harmony, True Blood) It wasn’t until I started prepping for this episode of Collider Ladies Night that I fully realized how much Anna Camp has accomplished over the years and how much she’s contributed to a number of iconic franchises. I have a feeling I’m not alone with this, but I first took note of her work after catching her as Sarah Newlin on True Blood, but in addition to that unforgettable HBO series, Camp has also appeared on The Office, Mad Men, The Good Wife, and then some. And even when it comes to short-lived shows that didn’t get the love they deserved, like let’s say Amazon’s Good Girls Revolt, Camp still delivered material that made a long-lasting impression, with fans still spreading love for the series long after it ended. All of this and we haven’t even mentioned Camp’s work on the big screen yet! Of course the Pitch Perfect franchise made an indelible impression on many, but Camp is currently in the midst of quite the string of new release including two Netflix movies and another feature film that’s bound to show off significant range for the star who’s become extremely well known for her comedy chops, playing big personalities, and also nailing accents. Clearly there’s a lot to cover here so get ready for a very fully episode of Collider Ladies Night! Camp explained why she once thought she’d just stick to the New York theater scene and how her first pilot season changed that dramatically, she recalled her experience auditioning for Mad Men and True Blood, and whether or not there’s interest in making more Pitch Perfect films. On top of that, get ready to hear all about Camp’s new movies including The Lovebirds which you can watch right now on Netflix, Here Awhile which is set to hit VOD on June 9th, and Desperados which is schedule to drop on Netflix on July 3rd.

Did you know in 1970 the first all-female class-action lawsuit was brought about by employees at Newsweek? Some of the brightest voices in journalism had been working and stagnating at the magazine for years - Nora Ephron, Susan Brownmiller, and Lynn Povich just to name a few. Author and journalist Lynn Povich Povich wrote about her experiences with Newsweek and the lawsuit in a book titled The Good Girls Revolt: How The Women Of Newsweek Sued Their Bosses And Changed The Workplace. The cover of Lynn Povich's book The feminist heavens have smiled upon us, and turned the book into an Amazon series loosely based on those events. You can watch the pilot here. I've been excited about this show since I became aware of it, and I was even more excited to find out one of my buddies, Jaime Andrews, is playing Dottie. Jaime Andrews  and Hannah Barefoot in Good Girls Revolt Jaime and fellow cast member, Hannah Barefoot (who plays Diane) were sweet enough to sit down and chat with me about how working on the show has influenced their own feminism and how there's still so much we can learn from the women who came before us.
