In this episode of Everyone's Talkin' Money, I'm joined by Kara Stevens—founder of The Frugal Feminista, personal finance coach, and unapologetic advocate for women healing their relationship with money. Kara opens up about her journey from earning six figures while buried in $65K of debt to building a life centered around emotional well-being, financial clarity, and aligned values. We talk about how money avoidance shows up in sneaky ways, why emotional spending isn't just about impulse, and how to demolish debt without feeling like you're in financial lockdown. You'll hear: Why income doesn't equal financial confidence How generational money trauma impacts Black women in particular What “values-based budgeting” actually looks like in real life The difference between being rich and feeling rich Why healing—not hustling—is the real secret to long-term wealth We also dive into Kara's approach to parenting around money, navigating side hustles while holding a 9-to-5, and the mindset shifts that turn shame into strategy. Whether you're staring down your own debt, trying to break a financial cycle, or just ready to feel more in control of your money—this conversation is a must-listen. You'll walk away knowing: Many women face hidden struggles with money and debt. Shame and confusion often accompany financial challenges. Teaching children about money can create a positive relationship with finances. Debt repayment should be approached with compassion and understanding. Balancing work and side hustles requires strategic planning. Income does not equate to wealth; understanding assets is crucial. Finding fulfillment beyond spending is essential for financial well-being. Aligning spending with personal values can lead to better financial decisions. Creating sustainable financial goals involves understanding one's pace and needs. Healing one's relationship with money is key to achieving financial success. This month's topic is Risk Management. Risk management is an area of financial planning that no one wants to talk about or think about, but it's a necessary component. If you're not prepared for what could be the worst-case scenario, then you'll not only experience a personal shock like an accident or death, but you'll also experience a series of unfortunate financial surprises. You may be surprised about today's guest as the show doesn't align with typical risk management subjects like insurance. I'm talking about having a healthy relationship with money with Kara Stevens, founder of Frugal Feminista. Kara joins me to talk about her book, "Heal Your Relationship with Money," her personal journey, and all of the financial benefits she has received from developing a better relationship with money. As much as any financial product can impact your finances, I think nothing can impact it more than your mindset. I highly encourage you to invest time in this episode and book if you don't have a healthy relationship with money. What's one of the most overlooked pieces to building wealth? No, it's not making more money. The secret is in understanding your money story. Your money story operates automatically in the background every second of the day, influencing how you spend and save your money. As our guest Kara Stevens, founder of The Frugal Feminista and author of Heal Your Relationship with Money, says, “Often, the money stories that we have held as adults aren't even our money stories—they are inherited and unexamined money stories from our childhood.” The truth is your parents honestly were trying to do their best with money. It's not their fault they got emotionally tripped up by money or made certain choices. But all those choices influenced your money story and where you are today. So, if you want to start growing wealth, you need to start by rewriting your money story and removing what doesn't fit any longer. In this episode, we welcome Kara Stevens, CEO & Founder of the Frugal Feminista, to discuss uncovering and rewriting your money story. Your money story is the narrative you tell yourself about money and your rights and relationship to it based on your values, beliefs, and life experiences. Our money stories are often “borrowed” from the people who raised us. Depending on what was borrowed, you may want to rewrite your money story once you gain awareness and clarity about your own desires and needs. In the episode, Kara educates on how to identify your money story and the importance of healing our relationship with money if our stories create negative connections to our worth, value or happiness. She shares her own personal journey, and how an aligned money story can become a vehicle for creating more wealth and freedom in your life. Tune into this inspiring episode to gain insights on how to move from a mindset of lack to one of abundance with regard to your relationship with money. I’m there to answer questions, be there for support, and hopefully add some entertainment and fun during this time. It’s family friendly (although I can’t control the chat, just FYI!) $0 & Heavily Discounted Courses, Ebooks, Coaching & Co-Working events While I know a lot of us online entrepreneurs still do need to make a living since we are at the forefront of what's going to be a thriving economy. It’s still fun to surprise and reward our audience with extra bonus treats while things are crazy. There’s a couple of creators who decided to go the discounting route: Ditch The Ish - Propel Your List & Get Rich Audio Sales & Copywriting Course [Pay What You Feel] by Me - I love this little yet dangerously impactful course. If you feel like you need a little more of a butt kicking (and a simple sales page template) along with list building strategies, this audio bootcamp is what you need to get you out of your head, do the scary stuff and see results. Click here to pay whatever you want for it. The Affiliate Program Toolkit - Pay what you can - $47 Minimum (Normally $497) by Zoe Linda Zoe is the queen of showing online business owners how to create, design and manage affiliate programs for their own products. With swipe files, video lessons and detailed guides - Zoe will get your affiliate program up, running and profitable. I can tell you I’ve done the WORST job of supporting my affiliates so when I saw this crazy deal come through I scooped it up FAST. All the rest of her products are "pay what you can" too including the Referral Toolkit For Service Providers ($27 dollar minimum normally $147), Black Friday Affiliate Booster Pack ($9 minimum normally $47) Brit & Co - All programs FREE (normally $29 - $97) Use the Code SELFCARE. This is one of the most generous deals I've seen. Brit & Co have a variety of courses, from several different creators, featuring everything from productivity, to hand lettering, drawing, to small business finance and even cake decorating. Just make sure that you use the category selector at the top because "all classes" barely shows you a quarter of what they offer. Personally, I used this more as a buy one, get one deal - since you can use the code SELFCARE an unlimited number of times over the next couple of days. I wanted to support a business that is really showing up in a big way for people who have lost their jobs or don't know where their next clients are coming from. But you can turn it into an all free, buy 1 get 3, 4, 5, 10+ deal. It’s all up to you. They have alot of ads running on their site right now. So I'm sure they're monetizing their traffic well. Amazon Success Class ($1) Andrea Thomas If you’ve been thinking about selling products on Amazon but you're not sure where to start this special live masterclass by Andrea Thomas is for you. Not only will she tell you where to find products you can easily sell on Amazon but if you click over the sales page she has an AMAZING free class (no opt-in required) you can watch right now. And if you like her style you can "upgrade" (it cost a cool 5 dollars) to get access to her other lives trainings including: Smart from Scratch® - How to Find a Winning Business Idea & Land Your First Customer FREE (normally $247) - Pat Flynn Smart Passive Income. For a limited amount of time Pat Flynn is offering his full fledged beginner’s course on how to start a business completely for free. Smart From Scratch® is a hands-on, comprehensive course that enables you to develop a business idea, validate it, and determine if that idea is viable to pursue. Our guest today, Kara Stevens is the founder of TheFrugalFeminista.com and has spent a lifetime overcoming the negative money lessons she learned in childhood to become a happy, successful, and wealthy woman today. Black women and money are not often spoken of in the same sentence. There are so many negative mindsets or pieces of emotional baggage that we black women carry surrounding money that have to be changed. Thankfully, we have some sisters who have been down that road ahead of us and are willing to help. Kara Stevens is one of those women. She's done the hard work of changing her own mindset to facilitate a different way of dealing with and earning money. In this conversation, Rosetta and Kara talk about the baggage and mindsets that hold Black Women back and chart a way forward. You’ll want to hear this one. The emotional hurdles surrounding money have got to be overcome. Too many times we black women are living our lives according to beliefs and emotional baggage that no longer apply. Kara Stevens shares how as a child her dominant belief about men and money was that men cannot be trusted with money. She had to do a lot of self-examination and personal work to overcome the negative beliefs she had around money and realized on her path to healing that she was learning things that many of her sisters needed to know. It wasn’t long before she was beginning to speak about what she was learning and in time it created a business that empowers black women to think and live differently in relationship to money. You can find out how Kara has walked that path and has come to such a healthy place, on this episode. It’s a form of self-love to ask for a reasonable payment for your services. One of the things Kara had to realize as she began examining her beliefs and practices surrounding money was that she was scared to ask for a significant payment for the services she was providing people. But a revelation that changed her entire approach to the topic was that it is actually a form of self-love to ask for reasonable payment for your services. It’s not greedy. It’s not unkind. It’s right for you and right for those you are serving. And ultimately it enables you to provide for yourself and your family as you should. Kara shares many insights like this during this conversation with Rosetta so take the time to listen. Saving money is great. But you need to switch to thinking about earning more money. Every financial planner or coach advises that you set up a way to consistently save money. That’s great. Kara Stevens, Rosetta's guest on this episode does as well. But she also points out that at some point you need to get past the fundamental principle of saving money and begin to move toward the possibility of making more money. There are two ways to approach meeting your needs, and making more money is surely the more fun and liberating way of the two. Kara gives some great advice about how you can get your mind around the idea and what you can do to begin moving in that direction, on this episode. If you can’t find the money to invest in yourself, nobody else will. It’s hard to think about spending money for self-improvement options such as coaching or training when you don’t have much money to spend. But you will eventually come to the point where you realize that nobody else is going to spend the time, make the effort, or invest the money in your growth. You have to do it. So you need to find a way to maximize your ability to save and make money so that you can equip yourself with the mindset and skills it will take to get your life moving in a different direction. You can learn a lot about this sort of personal development mindset switch on this episode of Happy Black Woman.
