Here's the thing. We only have this one life here on earth. And since our time is so limited, it should be filled with things that bring us true happiness. Whether that's work, family, travel, or passion projects. Creating a life you love should be a pursuit we all strive for. That's why I'm so excited to welcome Catie Hogan to the show today. Catie is an entrepreneur, mom, speaker, comedy writer and she's made multiple career shifts. Catie and I are going to talk about how women can create a life they love and how to leverage money to help them in the process. Here's a glance at this episode: [03:20] Catie's trigger was student loan debt. She found herself in a dark place thinking about how to pay off six-figures of student loans. [11:08] Catie saw a shift in how her parents' handled money. That had a big impact on Catie growing up. [21:54] Investing in a 401k is a great starting point. Make this a priority if you can, because it is a way to get started. [30:49] As she's gotten older, Catie has found it easier to say no to things that don't align with her values, financial and otherwise. [38:29] Catie walks through the process of writing a parody play and how it ended up getting on Broadway. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Have you ever been intentional with consistent gratitude? Meaning, every day you acknowledge the things you're grateful for, for an extended period of time. If you have been intentional with gratitude and appreciation, you probably have noticed the benefits. The more grateful you are, the more you seem to have and the happier you seem to be. Not only that, when you appreciate what you currently have (instead of focusing on what you don't have), you open the door for more. If you struggle with appreciating what you currently have going for you, I want to help. In this episode, I'm sharing 7 ways to practice gratitude for what you currently have to allow you to attract abundance into your life. Just because you appreciate the money you have or the current things you have doesn't mean you can't work towards more. The point is to be grateful for where you are and what you have, so you're not constantly focused on what you don't have. This is key to attracting abundance. Keep working for your goals but appreciate the journey along the way! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:23] Remember a time when you had less than what you have now. This is one of the easiest ways to be grateful for your current situation. [05:20] Every time you go to pay a bill or spend money on something that sustains your lifestyle, express how grateful you are to cover that expense. [08:47] Feeling like your budget doesn't include the things you love? Take a closer look at how your money is allocated currently and work from there. [12:06] It may seem like an obvious tip to write down the things you're grateful for daily, but it really does help you grow your gratitude reserve. [15:35] There's an abundance of information and education out there to help you with money, you just have to seek it out. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? The one thing you need, more than anything else, to change your finances, or your life, for the better is the right mindset. Your mindset makes all the difference. How you think about your money determines how you act with your money. To become a person who builds wealth, you need to start thinking (and therefore, acting) like a wealth builder. Not sure what that looks like? In this episode, I'm walking you through some of the most impactful mindset shifts you can make to become a person who succeeds with building wealth. Get ready for a money mindset makeover that has you thinking like a real wealth builder! I saw a quote online that said, “a negative mindset can cost you more than any expense.” I had to sit and appreciate how true that quote was. When your mindset isn't up to par, you not only miss out on opportunities to change your life, but you rob yourself of any joy you could have for what is going right in your life. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:38] If thoughts dictate your actions, what makes mindset so critical is the actions you take relative to the thoughts you're having. [06:33] Do you constantly think you never have enough money? Shift to the mindset of there are always opportunities to make more. [11:29] How can you spend slightly less on discretionary things and take that difference and put it into an investment account? [17:46] Raya shares her first realization of the fear of success. It never occurred to her that this is a real fear that impacts how people think and act. [21:36] Raya shares some actionable tips people can implement instantly to start building more confidence with money. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? In my over-a-decade of experience with budgeting, for myself and helping others, I've come across a myriad of reasons, excuses, fears and inaccurate rationalizations for why people choose not to budget. And it's doing more harm than good. There was a point in time when I chose not to budget, and it cost me a lot. Thankfully, I got my act together and now I help women do the same. We all need to be budgeting, and if you've convinced yourself otherwise, I'm here to set you straight! In this episode, I'm sharing 5 budgeting myths millennial women (or any woman really) needs to stop believing because these myths are delaying a life of happiness. One of the most common things people do with their finances is trying to keep it all in their head. If you think you can keep your budget top of mind, you're setting yourself up for failure. I share some solutions to this particular myth. Here's a glance at this episode: [03:05] When you rely on a mental budget, you're leaving so much room for error. We can't remember or account for everything in our head. [06:42] Just because you never learned how to budget in the past doesn't mean that you can't learn or succeed with budgeting in the present. [09:15] When it comes to creating your budget, there are certain numbers that you do need to know, but you don't have to be responsible for always calculating them. [13:40] A budget should include the things you love and/or saving for the things that truly matter to you. [16:53] You can't predict the future. Certain things will come up that we can't plan for. That means you need to believe it's okay to be fluid with your budget. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Are you a fan of the City Girl Savings podcast? Long gone are the days where we put our financial wellbeing into someone else's hands. Not only do most financial advisors prefer working with individuals who already have wealth built, but sole responsibility for our financial situation lies within ourselves. Each of us must take ownership of our situation and work to make positive changes in it. This is even more important for women. Personal finance planning isn't always an easy topic to discuss, but it's a necessity. That's why I'm so excited to welcome Mabel Nunez of Girls on the Money to the show today. Mabel and I are discussing how women can start preparing for their financial future and build wealth through investing. Mabel also gives insight into how she started investing and how one class changed the overall trajectory of her life. If you've been holding off on investing, Mabel's insight will encourage you to finally dive in and get started. Your future self will thank you! Here's a glance at this episode: [04:05] Mabel shares that no one ever talked to her about investing, so when she took a class to learn more, the trajectory of her life changed. [12:25] Emergencies don't announce that they're coming. Mabel shares the importance of having a savings account dedicated to emergencies. [18:00] Don't overthink getting started with investing. Mabel discusses hurdles that could stop someone from investing. [27:54] If you're a long-term investor, you can expect your money to grow and compound by 10% per year. There's no better return. [41:12] If you're buying quality company stock, your portfolio will bounce back. That means you'll want to be careful with how you react to dips. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? In this week's City Girl Savings podcast episode, and the final of our rewind series, we're rewinding to an episode recorded just last year – Financial Education versus Financial Experiences. I chose to rewind to this episode because I want you to know that the experiences you have with your money are significantly more powerful than any financial education you may have. And I'm speaking from experience. I have a B.S. degree in Finance, but my financial experiences have shaped what I do with my money now and how I leverage it to get ahead. In this episode, I share how my financial education and my financial experiences impacted my life…ultimately leading me to the conclusion that you don't need a formal education in finance to be good with money. A financial education is great, and I encourage you to seek it, but it's not a necessity to have a financially stable, financially free life. Enjoy this final episode of our rewind series. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:31] Raya shares her early experiences with money as a child and her perspective on how things were covered back then. [04:57] A money belief that Raya absorbed early on was that if you go to work every day you will come home and have what you need. [07:45] The money principles Raya learned before college went out the drain when she got to college and had access to credit cards. [11:25] Raya learned the importance of paying her bills on time but only because she almost faced eviction for failing to pay rent on time. [14:41] 9 years after starting City Girl Savings, most of what Raya learns is through financial experiences compared to financial education. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? In this week's City Girl Savings podcast episode, we're rewinding to another more seasoned episode, recorded in the second year of this podcast – Why You Need to Pay to Get Better with Money. I chose this episode to rewind to because there is still a collective doubt about the power of investing your own dollars to learn what it takes to better your financial situation. Have you considered working with a financial coach or therapist and talked yourself out of it? You're not alone! In this episode, I break down the value of investing money to improve with your money, along with the necessary mindset shift a person needs to make to not only willingly put up their money to improve in their financial situation, but to see an infinite return on that investment in the form of true results. If you know you need to get help in your situation but haven't been able to justify the cost, this episode will change your entire perspective. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:22] In this City Girl Solutions segment, I'm sharing some ideas for budget-friendly wedding planning. [04:35] If you've never invested in any type of coach or trainer, it can probably be hard to wrap your head around spending money to get better with something that you can learn on your own. [10:23] You can spend a lot of time researching and learning what you can do to improve your finances. The research may not cost money. However, you're giving up your time at the expense of not spending money. [14:00] Nothing happens overnight – whether you work with a coach or not. You have to be consistent and put in the work to see the results. [18:09] Paying down your debt balances is a big part of building wealth. With the right plan, you can see progress in this area. In this week's City Girl Savings podcast episode, we're rewinding to a more seasoned episode, recorded in the second year of this podcast – 9 Ways to Manifest More Money Into Your Life. I personally love this episode and chose to rewind to it because not everyone believes in the power of manifestation, or you just need some encouragement to manifest money into your own life. In the episode, I share 9 ways anyone can start manifesting more money into their lives. I also share my manifesting journey. What's not included is how I manifested my life goal of owning a second home in Palm Springs. If I were to re-record this episode, I'd have another firsthand example of how powerful manifesting can be. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:15] When you start believing something to be true, your brain acts accordingly. This is the science behind manifestation. [04:20] One tip to help you manifest more money is to write yourself a million-dollar check and keep it some place where you can see it often. [06:48] I hate to say it, but the more negative you think, the more negative things will happen. This is because you're constantly focused on the negative, so it becomes much more apparent. [10:00] Already have goals? Have you shared them? Putting your goals out into the world adds an extra layer of accountability, which can help you work harder to achieve them. [14:10] The more thought-aware you become, the easier it will be for you to notice thoughts that aren't in line with what you want to manifest. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? In this week's City Girl Savings podcast episode, we're rewinding to an episode in the early stages of this podcast – How to Stop Holding Yourself Back with Money. I chose this episode to rewind to because it can serve as your true wake up call to take responsibility for your financial situation. I get real, honest and debatably harsh. In the episode, I share 6 incredibly effective ways to help you break free from your own self-imposed financial chains. Not only that, I make sure that each of the solutions provided are things that can be implemented immediately. The power to change is in your hands, and I want you to take that power and level up your money situation. Enjoy! Here's a glance at this episode: [02:20] Changing your mindset allows you to see opportunities instead of problems. This is critical for getting ahead with your money. [04:04] Now, I welcome being uncomfortable because it's a sign that I'm getting to another level and growing. [07:49] If you don't have any idea where you want to be in life, you may find yourself unhappy. Take the time you need to get clear on what you want out of life. [10:05] Start reframing your thoughts! Instead of thinking “I'm unhappy with the money I make”, think “I'm grateful to have money coming in.” Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? In this week's City Girl Savings Podcast episode, the first of our rewind series, we're rewinding to one of my first episodes of the podcast – How I Curbed My Desire to Spend. I chose this episode to rewind to because it lays out the 2 specific phases of my life where I intentionally decided to control my spending. First, when I had no choice and second, when I wanted to make something of the additional income I started to have. This episode also breaks down the habits that helped me curb my desire to spend for the long haul. These weren't quick fixes, but true behavioral changes that impacted my impulse to shop and accumulate material things. I hope you can take something from my experiences and apply it to your own situation – especially if you struggle with overspending. Enjoy this first episode of our rewind series. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:20] There were two specific times in my life where I had to curb my desire to spend. One of those times, I had no choice. The other, I made the conscious effort. [04:31] Although I was forced to get my spending in order, it helped propel me into the mindset of wanting to avoid overspending so that I could get ahead in life. [06:53] I learned an important lesson about myself – I'm a natural-born spender. I can always find something to spend my money on. [11:50] Keeping my goals front and center allows me to constantly remind myself that I shouldn't overspend, especially if it's going to be at the expense of my goals and dreams. When I first start working with my money coaching clients, I set the expectation that the first month of our budgeting and tracking together is more about mindfulness than control. I'm not focused on how well they can control their spending right off the bat. I'm more focused on how mindful and intentional they are. Are they aware of what they're doing with their money, or is it mindless behavior? Before any positive change can happen, awareness is the first step. You can't fix a problem you don't know exists. In this episode, I'm sharing 7 ways to be more mindful with your money. Build that awareness of your money habits, patterns and decisions. Then, make changes where you see fit. Do you constantly find yourself saying “I'm only young once” or “I'll figure out how to make more money later” or any other combination of short-term, in the moment justifications for bad spending behavior? While the last thing I'd want to do is kill your vibe, the money coach in me needs you to start thinking long-term with money! Instead of letting YOLO (“you only live once”) be your driving mantra behind spending, learn to accommodate your future self as well. It won't happen overnight, but you can train your brain to think long-term with money. In this episode, I'm sharing 5 ways you can start that training process today. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:06] If you want to start thinking long-term with money, you have to visualize your life in the future. What do you want your life to look like? When it comes to your money, certain habits and behaviors can negatively impact your bottom line. In financial terms, your “bottom line” essentially means your profit. Whether it's what's left after you've allocated your income to expenses and spending in the month (via your budget). Or, if you're calculating your net worth by deducting your total debts from your total assets. Either way, we want our “bottom line” number to be as high as possible. The more profit, the more we can grow our wealth. Unfortunately, certain toxic money habits can reduce our bottom line number. It can happen in small, sneaky ways, or it can happen in big, drastic ways. Regardless, it's important to know what those bad habits are, especially since they can have the opposite effect of what we want. In this episode, I'm sharing 5 toxic money habits to break as soon as you possibly can. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:23] You can spend money on non-necessities. The goal is to make sure spending is moderated by factoring those things into your budget. [05:18] Are you constantly pulling money out of your savings account? It's very likely you have too much going into savings in the first place. [08:53] Depending on how much debt you have, it can take a long time to pay it off. That's okay. Slow and steady can be effective. [12:45] Comparing your life or trying to live a life similar to someone else's will only lead to unhappiness and feeling less than. [15:40] If you tend to spend money before you get it, this toxic money habit could be causing you issues over the long haul. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Sure, I haven't achieved everything I set out too…but I either keep working towards those things or I align my goals to where I'm at now. My point is that to be successful in life, you should be setting and working towards your goals. Not sure where to start? I spend a lot of time at the end of the year reflecting on things that work and don't work in my life, money and business. In this episode, I'm sharing the habits I plan to implement as quickly as possible to help me step into the next best version of me. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a wealthy individual. I REPEAT: There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a wealthy individual. The more wealth we have, the more good we can do. I saw a post on social media that said the world needs more women billionaires – women like MacKenzie Scott, Melinda Gates and Taylor Swift – women using their financial resources for good. I couldn't agree more. In 2025, my focus is definitely on building my wealth, and hopefully yours is too! But what is built must also be protected. That's why I'm so excited to talk with former financial advisor, now Certified Financial Planner Brittney Castro on the show today. Brittney and I are going to talk about how women can build and protect their wealth for the long haul. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:52] Brittney breaks down her journey in the financial services industry, including the experience of selling her financial planning business. [11:51] Do you struggle with knowing your values? Brittney acknowledges that it can be a struggle to know your next steps when you're unsure. [17:10] Not sure if you should save or pay off debt? Brittney shares her advice for deciding whether to save or pay off your debt or do both! [32:49] Brittney walks through different investment vehicles, including life insurance and leveraging it for building wealth. [40:44] If you leverage your life insurance policy properly, you can access tax-free dollars and use how you'd like. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? If I think back to 10 years ago today, I was literally days away from launching City Girl Savings! I had come up with the idea for City Girl Savings near the end of 2013 and started taking action all through 2014. I hired a company to design a website with the capability of fostering a community, technology to allow me to create customer budget plans through the website and hold a plethora of blog articles. My mission at the time was to help show women they could live a life of fashion, travel and self-care while reaching money milestones through budgeting. That website was a site for sore eyes, but on January 1st, 2015, City Girl Savings came to life. As we approach our 10-year anniversary, I want to share what 10 years in business has looked like for City Girl Savings. In this episode, I'm reflecting on the growth, the changes, and the lessons learned after 10 years in business. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:06] City Girl Savings was not an overnight success. The first business sale came 8 months after launching. [04:44] 2023 was the first year City Girl Savings saw a large reduction in revenue. Raya shares more about business finances over the years. [08:29] Raya has learned that City Girl Savings isn't for everyone. It was hard not to take this personal in the beginning. [12:46] Another struggle Raya had in the early stages of the company was understanding that no one is going to love the business as much as her. It's her baby, no one else's. [18:29] Comparison is something Raya is good about not doing. While she's human and has her moments, she doesn't stay in those moments of comparison. The older I get, the more I realize how important money management is. Having money, keeping money, and growing money – things that we really aren't taught early in life, but things that make a huge difference in the quality of our lives. I was fortunate enough to be in a tough financial situation in my early 20s that opened my eyes to the importance of doing the right things with money. Now, I strive to help women see the value of budgeting and money management and learn what it takes to succeed with it. If you've been wanting to prioritize your money, but haven't gotten around to it yet, this episode is for you. I'm sharing 5 empowering reasons to prioritize your money next year and keep it a priority indefinitely. [07:18] Raya doesn't believe Social Security benefits will ever go away, but relying on them to get you through the future is not a smart move. [08:02] As a way to face fear and focus on solutions, Raya and her fiancé run through their worst-case scenarios and things they can do to counter them. [13:09] Prioritizing your money now means you won't have to stress and worry about money as much in the future. Invest in real estate and the stock market as early as possible. I don't think anyone goes into a marriage thinking it could eventually end. However, life happens. Sometimes, things don't work out as we hope or plan they will and we have to course correct. As someone who's newly engaged, I want to make sure I think about all aspects of life and finances once our marriage begins. I've also worked with plenty of clients who have been divorced or have gone through a divorce during our time together. It's hard. That's why I'm so excited to chat with attorney Ashley Nicole Green on this week's episode of the City Girl Savings podcast. Ashley and I are going to discuss how women can navigate life and finances before marriage, after a divorce and everything in between. Here's a glance at this episode: [05:00] Ashley shares that when she and her husband were newly engaged, they sat down and had a candid conversation about each of their financial situations. [13:30] Ashley explains how costly divorce can be, just because of how much time goes into it. This is where having a prenup can save both parties a lot of money. [20:30] Avoiding going to court for child support and custody arrangements is best. Ashley shares why and when it is necessary to go to court. [34:50] Ashley shares her advice for women who think they may need a divorce but don't have a prenuptial agreement in place. [42:50] When navigating divorce with children, a great motto to uphold is “children at the center of every decision.” Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Great things happen on the other side of our comfort zones. I've talked about this before on the podcast and I believe it wholeheartedly. Doing so has helped me reach new levels in life, ingrain resiliency into my character, and have a deep level of self-trust. I consider myself a capable person who can accomplish what I set out to do. That's not to say things always go as planned or even work out. They don't. But, every time I've gone outside my comfort zone, new levels await. In this episode, I'm sharing 5 times I pushed past my comfort zone and reached new heights in my life. If you're new to the City Girl Savings community, then I need you to know that while I may be a finance coach and the founder of City Girl Savings, I was an avid spender before City Girl Savings came to be. I put myself in situations where shifting from a spending mindset to a savings mindset was a necessity. That means I know a thing or two about being an overspender. I also know a thing or two about being a saver. So, when it comes to shifting from a spending mindset to a savings mindset, my guidance speaks volumes, because I've been there. In this episode, I'm sharing how to make the shift from spender to saver. If you struggle with spending, you don't want to miss this episode. I've been a finance coach since 2016 and since then, I've seen a huge increase in the number of financial coaches offering services. This is a great thing! It means more conversations around financial literacy are showing people that there is outside help for your money, budget and overall financial situation. Financial advisors help you keep and grow your wealth, but financial coaches help you lay the foundation to start building wealth. That's why I'm so excited to talk with another financial coach today – Nicole Stanley from Arise Financial Coaching. Nicole and I are going to discuss the rise of financial coaching, what benefits come from this type of coaching, and so much more! Here's a glance at this episode: [05:46] Nicole started helping friends and family manage their budgets and retirement plans before starting her coaching company. [14:56] Nicole can see what a joy it is to spend on experiences now, when in the past she was very rigid with indulgences. [22:48] Nicole and Raya believe that people need to commit to doing the work when seeking out financial coaching assistance. [34:00] People aren't always used to paying up front for services, but financial coaches can help bridge that knowledge gap. [41:14] Nicole breaks down toxic frugality and how people can identify their values and spend accordingly. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? Financial Independence, Retire Early (also known as FIRE) is a movement devoted to extreme saving and investing in the present so that a person can retire much earlier than the traditional retirement age of 65. The Fire movement prioritizes saving and investing 50 to 70% of a person's income, if not more, to ensure early retirement is possible. In this episode, I'm breaking down the Fire movement in detail and sharing why it doesn't work for me or my dream life. My goal is to give you more context on the movement, along with my rationale for taking a softer approach in the present, even if it's at the expense of an early retirement. Here's a glance at this episode: [01:45] Not sure what the FIRE movement is? Raya breaks down the FIRE movement and the commitment needed to follow it. [04:38] Raya's gives an example of how to identify your FIRE number by running through a scenario where a person's expenses are $5000/month. [06:34] There are a few FIRE variations a person can follow, and Raya walks through each of them. [14:00] Raya shares how people can invest – through a retirement plan and through a general investment account. [16:22] Because of Raya's personal and business expenses, Raya doesn't feel the FIRE movement would work for her. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? If you know me, then you know I love to travel. Since that realization, I've been to some amazing places, including 15 different countries. And I've seen almost all of the United States. I only have 14 more states to hit! In simple terms, fear is the response to perceived physical or emotional danger. Fear is your brain's way of recognizing a threat and prompting you to protect yourself. If we were in ancient times, our fear response would be necessary to keep us safe. Nowadays, not so much. We're not facing imminent danger like people were back then. Sure, there are other dangers that are present in our current times, and fear is absolutely appropriate in those situations. However, there are other situations where fear isn't warranted. We just have to train our brains to not be fearful of those situations. In this episode, I'm sharing 6 money fears hurting your success. My goal is to help you work through these fears and see what amazing things come out on the other side. Here's a glance at this episode: [02:41] Raya gives an example from her past where her fear response happened, but the situation truly didn't call for it. [06:35] Investing is one of the best ways to build long-term wealth. We have to take ownership of learning what to do when it comes to investing. [11:31] If you're not putting your cash in an account that's generating interest, you're losing money due to inflation. [17:42] Hoarding money can be the result of a fear of something happening. This could keep you from making your money work best for you. [22:14] The fear of spending money and not getting a tangible return in place can be extremely detrimental to your growth, in money and life. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode? At the end of 2023, I shared my personal and business goals for 2024. Now that we're over the halfway mark of 2024, I want to share my progress! [13:40] Raya shares some events happening in the CGS community that can help reach the goal of 7500 Facebook Group members. [16:25] While the business is not hitting a 50% increase in revenue, it is averaging 20%, which is still promising. Rate, Review, & Follow: Did you love this episode?
