Kelli Anderson makes objects out of paper that explore design and the world around us. Her popular books — “This Book is a Camera” and “This Book is a Planetarium” — both include pop-up stripped down paper contraptions designed to teach how common objects — like cameras, speakers, and stringed instruments — work. Luckily for us type nerds, Kelli is in the process of making “Alphabet in Motion” — a pop-up book about how letters get their shape. The book dives deep into the history of letterforms and includes hundreds of color images mined from the archives of type design. Creative Characters host, Doug Wilson, catches up with Kelli about her forthcoming book, her passion for teaching design with tactile objects, and her love of all things paper. If you'd like to learn more about "Alphabet in Motion" or back Kelli's Kickstarter, visit kellianderson.com/kickstarter You can find blog posts for this and all our past episodes at monotype.com/podcast.

Kelli Anderson is a designer and paper engineer whose work operates in the space between conceptual art, graphic design, and tech. Her whimsical books have featured a working paper planetarium, a pop-up pinhole camera, and a paper record player. Whenever she can, she uses humble, lo-fi materials to expose the invisible magic of the world and make abstract concepts real and tangible. Anderson's work puts forth the idea that lo-fi, handheld experiences can challenge the notion of tech as an inaccessible black box. Her first book, a functional pop-up camera titled, “This Book is a Camera,” was published by the Museum of Modern Art in 2016. Her paper record player invitation, her TED talk, and her work on Tinybop's "The Human Body" are widely-beloved for showcasing the possibility hiding in plain view in our world.

This season begins with Kelli Anderson, an artist working across many disciplines including book making, experimental animation, sculpture, and printmaking. She is known for her design, animation, and illustration work for places like NPR, “The New Yorker,” “Wired,” MoMA, and the “New York Times,” as well as her branding for Russ & Daughters, Momofuku, and Munchery. Anderson is the author of two experimental and interactive pop-up books: “This Book is a Camera,” which transforms into a pinhole camera, and “This Book is a Planetarium,” which houses a tiny planetarium and other contraptions. We discuss her ongoing fascination with lo-fi, tactile creation over a breakfast of broccoli turmeric frittata and a grapefruit, blood orange and honey parfait.
In the final episode of this season, I am reunited with Kelli Anderson, LinYee Yuan, and Jen Monroe over a potluck dinner and dessert party. They compare and contrast their experiences in the food and design worlds over a homemade mezze platter, wine, and pastries.
Launched by photographer Aaron Bernstein, “All On The Table” curates and maintains community around food to form meaningful conversations between the overlaps of creative circles in New York City. This time around, Aaron sits down with paper wiz Kelli Anderson, MOLD founder LinYee Yuan, and food experience designer Jen Monroe to discuss their work at the intersection of food, art, and technology. Season Two of "All On The Table" will be released in full this summer. Stay tuned!
