Hi #AmWriters and subscribers to Jess' content, Jess here, looking out my office window over a beautiful, snowy Vermont Sunday and thinking of you. We do these things called “Lahey Cafe” days in the Lahey household and we have one coming up this afternoon. Back when my husband and I were in graduate school and never got to spend time together away from the books, we would go to cafes (Caribou Coffee on Main Street in Chapel Hill, NC was our favorite) and spend time together while studying. We kept this practice up once we had kids and now our daughter (a college student) asks for them regularly when she has essays to write or studying to do at home. Today, I'm serving up a King Arthur chocolate babka I baked yesterday, the wood stove is burning, and we will all sit at the dining room table with tea and coffee and chocolate-stained fingers while we work on our respective projects. I'm still slogging away on a book proposal, so that's my task at the Lahey cafe. Before I leave for the cafe, however, I wanted to offer up a bonus episode of the #AmWriting podcast for you. Last week, for the final AMA of the year, I invited EVERYONE, not just subscribers, to ask me anything, and boy, they did. I love these AMAs because they get at the heart of our most basic intent when we started this podcast over four hundred episodes, which was to flatten the learning curve for writers. If we, or someone we interview, have learned something through a mistake or stumbled upon something useful, why make someone else repeat the effort. Also, AMAs are a throwback to my career as a teacher, which I miss very much.So enjoy the podcast version of last week's AMA as well as some pen recommendations recommendations for left-handed writers from Bungu (not sponsored, I'm just obsessed with their products and their TikTok, @bungustore). I've linked the pens here:Zebra Sarasa Dry is their top choice, apparently because the ink dries so fastUni Power Tank (pressurized ink!)Uni JetstreamPento EnergelIt's a working weekend, so I'm off to work on some annoying administrative details of my book proposal and play with my new kitten, Lila. Thanks for reading #AmWriting! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit amwriting.substack.com/subscribe

The week is in full swing and Q1 results are starting to hit the news cycle. We take a look at BYD's possible slide in Q1, Ford's journey back to the discount aisle, and how big brands have leveraged the April Fools moment over the years.China's BYD reports a significant first-quarter sales dip in 2024, indicating a possible shift in the global EV market leadership back to Tesla, amidst intensifying price wars and changing market dynamics.BYD's first-quarter sales plummeted by 43% QoQ, while Tesla's sales are expected to only fall by 5%, potentially relinquishing its status as the world's leading EV seller to Tesla.Despite a year-on-year increase, the dramatic quarterly drop hints at Tesla's enduring dominance and the impact of competitive pricing in China.Tesla's consistent performance, coupled with a strategic price war in the Chinese market, underscores the intense rivalry between the two EV giants.Ford's strategic price reductions on the 2023 Mustang Mach-E have ignited sales and slashed inventory, spotlighting the critical balance between EV affordability and manufacturer profitability.Ford's discounts of up to $8,100 on 2023 Mustang Mach-E models have spurred sales, addressing the challenge of EV affordability. Despite these efforts, each sale still incurs a loss for FordIn February, almost 3K Mach-E's had sold, up 64% YoYSince the introduction of discounts, the Mach-E's inventory movement has nearly tripled, though its turn rate of 33% still lags behind the industry average of 45%."We are getting a lot of customers who were always interested in an electric product but saw it as unaffordable," said Doug North, owner of North Brothers Ford. From left-handed Whoppers to Velveeta night cream, history has seen its fair share of big brands taking part in the every popular April Fools games."In nationwide surveys, coffee drinkers told researchers the No. 1 complaint they have about their beloved drink is the way it stains," — Caribou Coffee, revealing the spoof behind Caribou Clear coffee (2014).Some fun ones:The Taco Liberty Bell (1996): Taco Bell fooled many by claiming to buy and rename the Liberty Bell, sparking a national stir.Left-handed Whopper (1998): Burger King's prank aimed to cater to left-handers by rotating all condiments 180 degrees for easier handling.Warby Barker (2012): Warby Parker's spoof claimed to launch a line of eyewear for dogs, complete with an Instagram account for adorable, bespectacled canines.Caribou Clear coffee (2014)Saucony changes name to Sock-a-knee (2023)Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Panera Brands is getting closer to being a public brand again: the St. Louis-based company reportedly filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering next calendar year, as reported by the Financial Times. While Panera declined to comment on the alleged IPO paperwork filing, the timeline would line up with other preparations the company has made in recent months, including executive board changes in September, and 17% corporate staff layoffs in November. The JAB Holding group — comprised of Panera Bread, Einstein Bros. Coffee and Caribou Coffee — first announced that it was preparing to go public in May of this year, after a previous failed attempt in 2022, following the dissolution of a partnership with New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer. At that time, Panera announced a leadership change from CEO Niren Chaudhary to current Einstein Bros. Bagels CEO José Alberto Dueñas. In May, the company also revealed that it generated $4.8 billion in revenue in 2022, most of which came from digital sales, and its loyalty program includes 53 million members, while its Unlimited Sip Club program accounts for 25% of all Panera transactions.
00:34 - GP Park is looking at some new zoning to turn owned and occupied housing into (maybe) parking. Change is inevitable, but aren't there better ways for one of the region's few walkable neighborhoods? 11:52 - Caribou Coffee is coming to Ferndale 13:40 - Inn Season is closed for good in Royal Oak after 40+ years 17:40 - An unexpected side effect of the closure of the Awrey's facility is that Sanders will have to find somewhere else to make Bumpy Cakes, making them a rare commodity soon. This week on the Extra Serving podcast, a product of Nation's Restaurant News, NRN editors Holly Petre, Leigh Anne Zinsmeister and Joanna Fantozzi spoke about new acquisitions.FAT Brands has made another acquisition. The company acquired Smokey Bones, the BBQ casual-dining concept, for $30 million. This comes in the wake of legal troubles for FAT Brands' former CEO and board member Andy Wiederhorn. FAT Brands made a name for itself over the past few years when it acquired four companies in 2021. Last year, FAT Brands acquired Nestle Toll House Café, and this is the first acquisition since then. What does this mean for FAT Brands? Are they getting back into the market?Next, the NRN editors talked about Panera Brands. The company, owner of Caribou Coffee, Einstein Bros Coffee and Panera Bread, has appointed two new members to its board ahead of its highly anticipated IPO launch. Many think this executive shake-up, in the wake of the chain's new CEO who was named to the position this year, is one of the final steps in Panera Brands going public. What can these two executives bring to the table? Finally, the NRN editors dove into the Top 500. We've been pouring through the data to give you segmented data on restaurants. Now it's time to talk about it.This week's interview is with Frances Allen, CEO of Checkers and Rally's.
JAB Holding group Panera Brands announced Monday new executive board changes ahead of the company's impending IPO launch. The St. Louis-based company has appointed former Starbucks CFO and current Panera board member as lead independent director of the board, and has added outgoing Krispy Kreme CEO Michael Tattersfield to the executive board, effective immediately.Grismer joined the Panera executive board in Sept. 2022 and currently chairs the board's audit committee. Before joining the Panera board, Grismer served as CFO of Starbucks for three years until 2021, and before that, he held the CFO position at Hyatt Hotels and Yum Brands, and has also held leadership positions at multiple Yum Brands brands, as well as at the Walt Disney Company.Tattersfield has been serving as CEO and president of Krispy Kreme since 2017, where most recently, he has led the brand through a reimagining. This week, Krispy Kreme announced that he would be stepping down as CEO, effective Jan. 1. In Jan. 2024, Tattersfield will be appointed chairman of the board, where he will oversee the Panera executive board, along with Grismer. Before joining Krispy Kreme, Tattersfield had experience leading a public company as a former CEO of Caribou Coffee. Tattersfield also had a previous stint on the Panera board until last year.
The restaurant industry's romance with Wall Street is back on, with chain after chain set to find out how much the stock market loves them. Cava is expected to get a read this week, possibly followed by brands ranging from Gen Korean BBQ to Panera Bread and its sibling concepts, Caribou Coffee and Einstein Bros. Bagels. Will the stampede set a new high-water mark for restaurant IPOs? Can the volume come close to the torrent of offerings that stock buyers embraced in the go-go 1990s? More than 70 foodservice companies sold themselves to the public that decade, led by steak and eatertainment concepts. The flood of capital changed the business. Many regarded that time as the coming-out party for casual dining. Others saw it as the first time growth-for-growth's-sake put the sector in trouble. Join me on this week's episode of Restaurant Rewind, where we'll look back at those days of IPO after IPO. What can we learn from those times about what's ahead for restaurant companies yearning to go public?

This episode is a true tribute of thanks. Greg Hoyt, owner of Rustica Bakery, has believed in our mission from the beginning as our first and longest sponsor of The View in Your Mirror. An entrepreneur born and raised in Southern California and the islands of Hawaii, Greg has a story that is best told in a coffeehouse. This special episode was recorded, live, in house at Rustica Bakery Edina. Originally a student of music, Greg's career in entrepreneurship started in 1993 at Minnesota founded, Caribou Coffee, after learning that he had stage fright with music performance. It was through his experiences there that he was motivated and inspired to build something of his own as he watched Caribou build through a meaningful mission. In 2009, after a conversation over a baguette with the original Rustica Bakery owner, Steve, Greg joined the business to truly make Rustica the neighborhood craft bakery it is today. Greg opened the doors to specialty coffee and found a niche that became DOGWOOD coffee. In 2015, Greg became full owner. Greg has expanded his passion for entrepreneurship in the food ecosystem space through his establishment Gather Venture Group. This investment fund provides resources for emerging food and beverage brands. Though this podcast shares the story of our favorite local bakery and coffeehouse, it is so much deeper than that. This is an episode for all the emerging and established entrepreneurs, for the life-long learners, and for the individual who could use a reminder of how to look at failures as successes. This is truly a podcast for everyone. We are so thankful to Rustica and we wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving. If the term “API,” has you uttering "Oofda", this episode is for you. Eric Caron, Senior Director of Digital Experience at Caribou Coffee, is back to talk nerdy with us about APIs. To get to the very core of what an API is, Eric uses examples of APIs we use daily (and probably never realized). He explains why APIs need good documentation, why an API should (and shouldn't) be public, and why an API management solution should be utilized. In 1993, Greg Hoyt graduated from college, and landed his first job with Caribou Coffee. He discovered two things: He fell in love with the coffee industry, and he learned that he wanted to become an entrepreneur. Now, Greg is an investor who helps entrepreneurs. He's also the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Gather Venture Group, a Minneapolis-based investment fund focused on emerging food and beverage businesses. On The Irresistible Factor, host Kristi Bridges and Greg discuss why he decided to become an entrepreneur, and how he's drawn to the uncertainty, ups and downs of starting a company. Greg knows that food brands can take many years to become established and profitable, and Gather is in it for the long game. “Trends will come and go, as far as methodology, and ways to build a business,” Greg told me. “But it really comes down to fundamentals, and the fundamentals are: ‘Do I have something that somebody wants? Am I solving a problem that exists? Is there value for the consumer? Is this something that I can see myself doing, and can it be something that generates a profit?'” Together, Kristi and Greg explore Gather's approach to investments, what the fund currently looks like — and how he hopes to see it evolve in the future — and the fundamental elements that lead to business success.
