This week on the pod we're diving into the elusive and booming Chinese film industry to see how they make their blockbusters. Funded in part by the CCP (i.e. definitionally propaganda), The Battle at Lake Changjin is the highest grossing movie ever made in China and spends a significant amount of its nearly 3 hour runtime on the PLA killing American imperialist pigs. It's that special time of year where you gather around the fire with your loved ones, cozy in with some hot cocoa, and watch your favorite Christmas movie. And while a Chinese move full of propaganda about the time they beat back the US Army at Lake Changjin (The Chosin Resevoir for you America heads) isn't really a Christmas movie, the battle took place about the same time so we're gonna count it. In this episode of the podcast, two Westerners analyse two Chinese war "propaganda" movies, The Battle at Lake Changjin I & II (Water Gate Bridge), offering their candid feedback. These are among the most successful Chinese 'blockbusters' of all time, the first part being the biggest hit in China's history, grossing at least $913 million after its 2021 release. The topic of these action-heavy war movies is China's role in the Korean War, with a particular focus on the showdown in Changjin, part two concentrating on the battle at its reservoir, which was a turning point for the war. Is the Chinese propaganda there as claimed? Is it over the top or warranted? How does it compare to American war movies and their messaging? Karri and Henrik also discuss the American acting, whether the UN troops retreated from Changjin, the shortcomings in storytelling and CGI, Hollywoodization of Chinese cinema, and other topics. Films covered in this episode: The Battle at Lake Changjin (长津湖, 2021) The Battle at Lake Changjin II (Water Gate Bridge) (長津湖之水門橋, 2022) Hosted by Karri Ojala and Henrik Telkki. Edited by Karri Ojala. The Flick Lab theme tune written and performed by Nick Grivell.

In this episode we compare and contrast two modern Chinese Blockbusters. The 800, telling the tale of a doomed Chinese Battalion in the last ditch defense of Shanghai, was plagued by delays, censorship, and CCP meddling. The Battle of Lake Changjin on the other hand, was a top down propaganda piece about the Korean War ordered to be ready for the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party. Both movies were extremely successful commercially, and are interesting in their own way. However if you're just going to watch one... it should be the 800.

Last year, Chinese producers released The Battle at Lake Changjin, a big-budget war movie celebrating a 1950 Chinese victory against US forces in the Korean War. The New York Times criticized the movie as a militaristic intervention by Chinese authorities into popular entertainment for propaganda purposes. However, media scholar Robin Andersen, writing for FAIR, noted that the U.S. press critique ignored the fact that the Pentagon has been influencing Hollywood films producing U.S. propaganda for decades. She joins the Project Censored Show to explore the close ties between the Pentagon and Hollywood and their ongoing efforts to rewrite history and demonize counter narrative sources. Later in the show, Andersen addresses the danger of applying corporate media "both-sides-ism” and false equivalency as part of News Abuse analysis in the latest Project Censored book, State of the Free Press 2022. In the second half of the show, media scholars Nicholas Baham III and Nolan Higdon speak about their new book, The Podcaster's Dilemma: Decolonizing Podcasters in the Era of Surveillance Capitalism, and how corporate media might attempt to co-opt the new medium given its popularity and success at reaching more diverse audiences. Their groundbreaking study is both cautionary and optimistic regarding prospects for this relatively new but wildly popular medium. Notes: Robin Andersen is professor emerita at Fordham University; she also writes for Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, and once again compiled the News Abuse chapter in Project Censored's annual book, State of the Free Press 2022. Professors and authors Nicholas Baham III and Nolan Higdon have made multiple appearances as guests on the the Project Censored Show and were podcasters themselves. Their new book, Podcaster's Dilemma, is both a scholarly analysis of the fast-growing podcasting sector, and an examination of podcasting's potential as a force of decolonization. Each aspect of Chinese propaganda complained about in Battle at Lake Changjin is routinely employed by US media, and have been for years. The post Beijing's Movie War Propaganda—and Washington's appeared first on FAIR.

Check out this weeks agenda below, enjoy the show as retired US Diplomat to 5 different nations David Hunter shares his knowledge, passion, interest, and experience.1) Will North and South Korea Finally End their War?: Many don't know the Korean War of the 1950s never ended. It was only a cease fire. The Korean war paused in July 1953 with an armistice --- not a peace treaty. Now Pres. Moon of South Korea is pushing North Korea for an official end-of-war declaration after 70 years of stalemate. What is going on? 2) Is a New Best Selling Chinese Movie More Than a Film? The new Chinese film 'The Battle of Lake Changjin' glorifies Chinese heroism during the real-life 1950 battle during the Korean War (known as “the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea,” in PRC). Why is this movie the most watched popular film in Communist China today? Is it Anti-American propaganda preparing 1 billion Chinese citizens for war? 3) Why Two Journalists Won The Nobel Peace Prize?: A journalist from the Philippians Maria Ressa , and another from Russia , Dmitri Muratov, just won the Nobel Peace Prize. They gave their acceptance speeches on Dec 10th. It's the first time since 1930s that a journalist has won the famous Peace Prize. Back then it was for warning us about the danger of rising Nazis and fascism. Why did the two journalists get the award this time? 4) Is Peace in the Middle East Ever Possible?: Last March 2021, Pope Francis visited the 'Ziggurat of Ur', located at an ancient capital of Babylon. He held an inter-religious prayer service at the ancient Mesopotamian site of Ur. This was supposedly the original birthplace of Abraham, son of Terah. Abraham, with wife Sarah, moved from Ur to Egypt where he personally met the Pharaoh. Later he moved through the Negev desert to Canaan Valley, settling near Hebron. His grave-site and that of wife Sarah and son Jacob are still in the Old City of Hebron, ---at the 'Tomb of the Patriarchs'---on the West Bank. It is holy to Muslims, Christians and Jews. So why can't we all get along?
The film "The Battle at Lake Changjin" depicts a great Chinese victory against an American aggressor. But the real battle was anything but glorious, fought in freezing temperatures with wildly high casualties on both sides. The legacy of the battle was nothing less than the recasting of international relations in the 20th century.Read the article by James Carter: https://supchina.com/2021/12/01/the-real-battle-at-lake-changjin/Narrated by John Darwin Van Fleet.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
The highest grossing films at the Chinese box office are war movies. Wolf Warrior 1 and 2, and The Battle at Lake Changjin, portray heroic Chinese soldiers battling against foreign enemies, including the Americans. These big budget productions are overseen by an arm of the state known as the China Film Administration. Are they therefore a form or propaganda, or can they be defined as art? Dr Xiaoning Lu, a lecturer in Chinese culture and cinema at SOAS, shares her views on the political messages of the films, in conversation with Duncan Bartlett, Editor of Asian Affairs magazine. The film industry has traditionally been dominated by studios in Hollywood, but there seems to have been a shift in the tide. The biggest movie in the world right now is a Chinese propaganda movie. The Battle at Lake Changjin is on track to become the biggest movie of the year, and the highest grossing Chinese film of all time. That alongside South Korea's Squid Game, has some in Hollywood nervous, and realising they may face more competition from Asian productions Media studies professor at University of Virgina and author of "Hollywood made in China" Dr Aynne Kokas joined Kate Hawkesby. 看一下牛津词典的解释:所以,这个词组的意思就很好理解啦,和“道德绑架”的意思是一样的~We can't let them practice this emotional blackmail on Wu Jing. “道德至高点”是有固定的英文表达的:moral high groundWithin a year, the US had lost the moral high ground. It is possible to cyber-bully someone even if they stay at their homes. Have you seen the movie Battle at Lake Changjin? What do you think about it?I'm looking forward to your post.

Asian Film Awards to nagrody, mające stanowić przeciwwagę dla zachodnich nagród filmowych i promować azjatyckie kino - to autorskie i to szukające wielomilionowych widowni. Blockbuster Chinese composer Elliot Leung joins The Film Scorer Podcast! Elliot's latest score is for the major Korean War film The Battle at Lake Changjin, which released this weekend and has already smashed numerous box office records (as well as being the highest grossing film in the world this weekend). However, we only briefly discuss his score. Instead, we touch on his other films, his general process, and how Martin O'Donnell's score for Halo inspired Elliot to pursue a career in composing for film and other media! You can find more information about Elliot on his website. The Battle at Lake Changjin is currently in theaters in China, but has not yet had a worldwide release. Elliot's score is similarly forthcoming, but you can listen to his scores for Operation Red Sea and The Rescue on all major streaming platforms.
