General Theme for the Week: Insights: God's Chosen People Today's Lesson: Leading God's People Through Adaptive Problems On this edition of One Single Story, Pastors Stephen Mizell and Sheryl Daughety discuss the following questions: Leadership is hard. Why do you think some leaders feel like they must provide a solution for every problem? Are there also some incorrect expectations from people about how leaders should solve adaptive problems versus how they solve technical problems? The reading for the day is Numbers 11.

Yourself You Should Humble, Before You Stumble And CrumbleScripture Reference:1 Peter 5:1-4Key Points:1.  Leading God's people requires humility, so bury the hostility, forgive immediately and enjoy the prosperity. 1 Peter 5:5-112.  Humbling ourselves and recognizing our need for Jesus, will spare us from Satan's trickery power, but those who exalt themselves satan will devour. Proverbs 16:16-19Matthew 23:11-12Matthew 5:53.  Jesus said it best, if you exhalt yourself your life will be a mess, but when you are humble and down to earth, you will inherit the earth.James 4:1-5James 4:6-74.  Let us be empowered with true humility today, to rebuke Satan and have him flee, when the blood of Jesus we please.James 4:8-10

1 Peter 5:1-14   English Standard Version   Shepherd the Flock of God 5 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: 2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight,[a] not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you;[b] not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. Final Greetings 12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. Footnotes 1 Peter 5:2 Some manuscripts omit exercising oversight 1 Peter 5:2 Some manuscripts omit as God would have you

He enjoys reflecting on the practice of ministry – as also serving as a ministry consultant. Over the years Paul has written widely on ministry matters and has taught all over the world on a wide range of topics related to Christian ministryPaul remains an accredited Baptist Minister of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, but is now part of the Chelmsford Cathedral community. He regularly speaks at the Cathedral's Sunday morning seminar-style ‘Breakfast with the Bible', and also leads a ‘fellowship group'. Paul continues to preach in churches of various denominations, although he is happy just to be part of the Sunday 9.30 Parish Eucharist at the Cathedral.Paul co-founded a bi-monthly lunchtime for retired Baptist ministers in Mid- and South Essex, and takes the lead in presenting topics for discussion.Since 2005 Paul has been a member of the Rotary Club of Chelmsford Rivermead, and was the 2016-2017 club president. In June 2018 he was named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. With its aim of ‘service above self', Paul sees his Rotary involvement as an expression of Christian ministry.Ministry ExperienceAs Senior Minister of Central Baptist Church, Chelmsford (1993-2014) he transformed a traditional declining city-centre church into a strong vibrant, growing fellowship; at the time he left there were 399 committed members, together with a much larger church community. As Principal of Spurgeon's College, London (1986-1993) he doubled the student enrolment, increased the faculty by one-third, and developed new patterns of ministerial trainingAs Pastor of Altrincham Baptist Church, Cheshire (1973-1986) he enabled a small declining church to develop into a strong virile church, quadrupled in size (from 83 to 300+ members). As a BMS Missionary in Congo/Zaire (1990-1992) he taught Greek and New Testament in the Protestant Theological Faculty of the National University.Prior to going up to Cambridge Paul served as a ‘Time for God' worker with the German Baptists (1962-63), helping with Baptist youth work in Southern Germany.Interests Beyond MinistryIn Who's Who? Paul lists as his interests cooking, travel and parties! His grandchildren are also another major interest! He is married to Caroline, a past President of the Coroners Society of England and Wales 2018-2019. They have four grown-up children and eight grandchildren.Paul is a patron of the Society of Mary and Martha, a retreat centre based at Sheldon, near Exeter, which specialises in supporting ministers experiencing stress, crisis, burnt-out or break-down. He is a patron of the J's Young Adults Hospice and also a company member of the Havens Hospices based in Essex. In January 2019 he became Chairman of the Cambridge Society of Essex, an alumni group which meets for lectures, lunches, and other social activities. He seeks to keep fit by engaging in a good deal of walking in the early morning. An AuthorPaul continues to be a prolific author.Since retiring from stipendiary ministry he has written a definitive guide to ministry entitled Living Out the Call (Feed-a-Read 2015; revised in 2016 and available through Amazon both electronically and as soft-backs). It consists of four volumes:Living to God's Glory (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Leading God's Church (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Reaching God's World (on Amazon, also available as a PDF);Serving God's Church (on Amazon, also available as a PDF).According to Derek Tidball, a former Principal of the London College of Theology. this is “the most comprehensive practical introduction to ministry currently available. He has written his autobiography, This is my story: a story of life, faith, and ministry (Wipf & Stock, Eugene, Oregon 2018). In the words of the cover blurb:This is a book for pastors – and for any Christian – who want the “inside story” of the pains and triumphs of a Christian leader. He has updated two popular pastoral resources. The first is Happy Ever After? A workbook for couples preparing for marriage (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017). Biblically-based and solidly practical, it covers everything from money to matrimonial disagreement, from coming to terms with the past to sharing jobs in the house. The second, A Loved One Dies: help in the first few weeks (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2017), gives down-to earth advice on how to arrange the funeral service, and the many other practical matters that arise after a death. It also provides clear thoughts on the Christian understanding of death to help the bereaved discover hope where at first there is only sadness.Following his 2017 survey of the reading habits of British ministers – the first survey of its kind in the UK, he published a major 8000-word article, ‘Ministers' Reading Habits', Baptist Quarterly 49 (January 2018). The full analysis together with further reflections is found on this website. He has written three books on ministerial retirement.Retirement Matters for Ministers: A report into how into how Baptist ministers experience retirement (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018), is based on a research project and explores issues such as the transition to retirement; housing and finance; health; friendships; family; and ministry in retirement.Entering New Territory: Why are retired Baptist ministers moving to Anglican churches? (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2019) is based on a second research project and explores the underlying theological issues.Making the Most of Retirement (Bible Reading Fellowship, Abingdon 2020) was written for ministers of all denominations and is the first such book for ministers written from a distinctively British perspective. His two latest books are:Fifty Lessons in Ministry: Reflections on Fifty Years of Ministry (Darton, Longman & Todd, London 2020) written to coincide with his 50th anniversary of ordinationThere is Hope! Preaching at Funerals will be published by IVP and surprisingly is the first British guide to preaching at funerals. He has edited two major books:Ministry Today UK: UK 1994-2018, (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2018) is a ‘cornucopia of pastoral wisdom', whose eight volumes contain all 520 articles of the former journal of MTUK.A College of Peers: The College of Baptist Ministers 2013-2021 (College of Baptist Ministers, Chelmsford 2021) is a story of a group of a group of ministers with a passion for ministry and should be of interest to all who are concerned for the wellbeing of ministry in Baptist churches.Together with Terry Calkin he has written a series short books on leadership for pastors in the developing world: viz. The Passionate Leader: The Four Foundations of Leadership, The Visionary Leader, The Leader with Character, and The Gifted Leader.Other writings currently in print are:Happy Ever After? Jeremiah 8:21 'I hurt with the hurt of my people. I mourn and am overcome with grief.' The power of Jeremiah's prophecy lies in the fact that he didn't stand at a distance from the people. He completely identified himself with them. Their hurts were his hurts; he described himself as being heartbroken and having grief beyond healing. (Jeremiah 8:18). But Jeremiah knew that the Israelites were suffering in such a dreadful way because they had abandoned God's way and followed other gods. As a result, they were about to be defeated by an enemy who would come from the north and overwhelm them. Jeremiah was in such a state of distress that he cried out: “If only my head were a pool of water and my eyes a fountain of tears, I would weep day and night for all my people who have been slaughtered.” (Jeremiah 9:1). The leaders of God's people should never stand at a distance from those they are serving. If they are to be faithful to their calling, they will share the joys and the sorrows of the people among whom they minister. They will feel the pain of their failure and disobedience and, like Jeremiah, long for them to find forgiveness and restoration. . They will feel the pain of their failure and disobedience and, along with Jeremiah, they will find forgiveness and restoration. The privilege of leading God's people is enormous, but the weight of it is always very great. Leading God's people is an enormous privilege but the weight of it is always very heavy. I am always a little anxious when people tell me that Christian leaders need to have a thick skin. If they mean that they need to be strong and resilient in the face of pressure and difficulty, I agree. But if they mean that Christian leaders need to be totally untouched and untroubled by the challenges they face, then I fundamentally disagree. Jeremiah entered fully into the tragic situation that faced him. The people rejected his message from God, and he felt the pain of that so profoundly that he was in a state of constant distress. We need to pray that Christian leaders will love people so much that they will fully identify with them in the same way Jeremiah did. Question: How does the example of Jeremiah help you to pray for the Christian leaders you know? Prayer: Loving God, we thank you for all Christian leaders. Help them to give their whole selves to the people they serve. Amen

They focus on whether the person right next to them understands what they're saying. One of the best ways to inspire people to be more motivated is by showing them that you care. Display servant leadership, show people that you're there to help them reach their goals and help them be successful.Remember the acronym, RISE. A leader must show respect, integrity, service, and excellence in their leadership.Write down 50 things that you're good at while also writing on the side the things that you want to be good at. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone in order to be better."You're already more than enough, you're created that way. Stop comparing yourself with other people, you don't know their journey, you don't know how much time they've invested developing that one thing that you look for. When you have a desire or goal, you first have to know are you willing to do what it takes to reach that goal. In Matthew 21:43-46 Jesus tells an incredible parable that clearly portrays the unfaithfulness of the religious leaders of His day in their responsibilities before God. The parable ends with Christ’s challenge that the Kingdom will continue to advance but not in their hands. In fact, It would be taken away from them and given to a people who will produce its fruit. This is exactly what took place beginning with Acts 2.

The letter of 1 Corinthians is a correcting letter to that body of Jesus Christ in Corinth and is still for us today. Chapter 12 is how God sets up his body and where he places us in every city, town, nation, etc. He is the only 1 who assigns gifts to us and it is up to his appointed leaders over each portion of his body in any specific location to welcome his newest member he places there and immediately seek God’s face (and voice) as to what gift or gifts they have and how he wants them to serve there. However, there are too many leaders today who’ve become like the priest Eli did in 1 Samual 2 and 3 and stop listening to God. This message is a warning to some of y’all not from myself but from The Lord to Just repent and confess.

Finishing Exodus - The End of the Beginning

Our look back over Exodus reminds of God's power, faithfulness, holiness, leadership, redemption and presence.  The time covered by the book shows the rescue, unification and plan for the new nation of Israel -- God's people who have been promised an amazing future (if and when they take it).   Answers to the "homework" (Thanks Bill!) are shown below:       Why do you think Exodus starts off with a review of Jacob’s family? Jacob’s family (Israel) had been in Egypt over 400 years and the story of how they came to be in Egypt had most likely been lost through the years. In fact the promise of a gift of land forever that God made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob most likely was also lost on the generation at was residing in Egypt at this time. The story of how God’s provision through Joseph was most likely forgotten as well.  History, knowing what has happen in the past, it important for each of us. Why was Pharaoh such an affront to God? At this time in human history Egypt was the most powerfully nation on earth. Pharaoh thought he was the best or in his mind he was god. As we learned in Isaiah, God said through the prophet “I am God and there is no other”.  Pharaoh was who he was because God allowed it and in the end, God showed His power to Pharaoh and the world. Why are the plagues such an effective condemnation of Pharaoh? Egypt had many gods and each of the plagues showed just how ineffective--false Pharaoh’s gods were. (1) The Nile turned to blood—Egypt had a god to the Nile-Hapi and Isis. (2)Frog’s—frogs were a fertility symbol. (3)  Gnats Set-god of the desert (Bible Knowledge) (4) Flies were especially to the Egyptian god of Uatchit (Wiersbet). (5) Egyptian cattle die—some of the gods were farm animals-another attack on the Egyptian religion. The Israeli cattle was not harmed (6) Boils on everything living thing—Sekhmet the goodness with power over disease (Bible Knowledge) (7) Hail—Nut the sky goddess (8) Locusts—Osiris god of crops (9) Darkness—Re and Horus sun gods (Bible Knowledge) and (10) Death of the First Born—god’s of reproduction and childbirth. How is the parting of the Red Sea echoed elsewhere in Scripture? The Red Sea is mentioned two times in the new Testament Acts 7 in Stephen’s sermon and in Hebrews 11—the Faith chapter. In the Old Testament the crossing of the Red Sea is mentioned several times to remind Israel of God’s faithfulness—Moses in Deuteronomy, In Joshua, in Nehemiah, in Psalms (106 and 136) and in Jeremiah. All the reference was to remember history. What are the implications of God giving the Law to His people? In Exodus the Law was given to restore order after having been slaves for so many years and to teach them to love and obey Almighty God. Paul told us in Romans 7:7 “I would not have to know sin except through the Law” What are the implications of the presence of the Tabernacle? God has always wanted to have fellowship with the human race, His highest creation, and He chose Israel to be His own possession (Ex 19:5). In the process of bring order; the Tabernacle was a place of Worship and place of God’s presents. It was a shadow as Hebrews tells of things to come, that is a better Priest and sacrifice in the Lord Jesus. What Biblical Themes does Exodus Illustrate? Deliverance—Freedom—God’s Leading—God’s Provision—God’s Faithfulness—God’s Power

Calvary Baptist Church - Canyon Texas - David Crump, Pastor

Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these. John 14:10-12 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. Who? Those who believe in Jesus. Greater things? Really? Perhaps not in extravagance, but in outreach. What? The works Jesus was doing. The work that Jesus did in John: He healed the sick John 5: He healed an invalid. John 9: He healed a blind man. He fed the hungry John 6: He fed 5,000 All the while, He taught people about Himself John 4: He taught a lost, sinful Samaritan woman that He is what she has been looking for. John 6: He taught, “the work of God is to believe in the one he sent.” One of the reasons for all the work that Jesus did was to reveal Himself, God’s method of salvation, to anyone who was paying attention. God’s work is significant. His plan is eternal. It is life and light, mercy and salvation to everyone who would believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. We are to take up his example and do God’s work as well. When we do God’s work, we become part of something significant, eternal, and bigger than ourselves. • Loving and teaching children about God in ways they can understand – that matters. • Loving and teaching youth how their faith can mature as they grow – that matters. • Leading God’s people in worship – that matters. • Serving the church body in a dozen different ways that many of you do – that matters. • Growing a garden to feed other people in the community – that matters. • Men praying together for their families, their church, and each other – that matters. • Ladies talking and laughing together, serving, and praying together – that matters. • Teaching others the scriptures and how to live by them – that matters. • Caring for people in nursing homes and people who have no one else – that matters. • Giving your money to help feed and educate kids overseas – that matters. • Giving your money to support the local church, outreach and missionaries around the world – that matters. • Talking to a coworker or classmate about what you found in Jesus Christ – that matters. The good works that you do here, at work or school or privately at home, they matter. They are eternally significant. God has created you to be a part of something significant, something bigger than yourself. God’s works are certain. These good works are a divine decree, and therefore, are certain. If Jesus said those who believe in him would do the works he was doing, then those who believe in him will do the works he was doing. If I am ordained to good works, then I do walk in them, and the decree of God is manifestly carried out in me. Since it is God's decree, that I should do good works, I will despite my old nature, and despite my spiritual weakness. The decree will be carried out despite my surroundings, despite the temptations of my circumstances, despite the opposition of the devil. God has ordained that we should walk in good works; and walk in them we shall, sustained by his Holy Spirit. God’s works are all for Him. All of your giving of your time and money. All of your frustration at times. All of your suffering to do good works, it will all be worth it. Matthew 25:31-40 31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ I thank God for the dozens of ways that He accomplishes His work in you. I look forward to a year that we might do even more as a group of believers in striving together to discover all the good works that God has prepared for us to do together. I know it will be worth it.
