We have some phun (with a PH) and discuss playing in Lee Falk's sandbox. The concept of playing in a sandbox is about playing with someone else's creation, ie the Phantom. Jermayn Parker, Stephen East and Dan Fraser are joined with Shane Foley and Matt Kyme who are two creators who thrive playing in the sandbox. All creators go some way into adding the “toys” that creators can play with in the sandbox. However today we're getting a bit more specific. Today we're discussing how creators utilise specific stories to create their own sandboxes to play in. We'll be focusing mainly on Lee Falk stories. Some of the topics we discussed are:Both creators using oodles of Lee Falk story references. For example Frew #1938/9 had three story references. How they get these ideas of adding or filling gaps in past stories. Why Lee Falk stories and not Tony DePaul or the Team Fantomen stories. Why is Lee Falk important to them.Do you like the Fantastical Lee Falk stories? How do you pay tribute to his stories?Do you see your work as 'Lore'?What are some pitfalls of you must look out for when playing in the sandbox?Would Shane Foley ever create stories with Kit and Heloise?Do you use the Phantom Bible?Shane Foley's defense of the 9th Phantom and him being portratyed as the 'Runt'?Their upcoming projectsAre Matt Kyme and Shane Foley coming to Sydney Supanova in 2023?Others who have spoken about the sandbox concept include Paul Mason and Jeff Weigel, we recommend giving their podcasts a re-listen for some other perspectives on the topicI hope you phans enjoyed that. Jermayn Parker is the odd man out as he is joined not by one, or even two but three Swedes in Mikael Lyck, Andreas Eriksson and Jacob Habinc. For Those Who Came In Late: Andreas and Jacob are the editors for Fantomen and they give what we can look forward to for the year 2023. Mikael Lyck helps drill the two editors and we manage to get several exclusives from the editorial team.We start off by learning about Jacob Habinc and Andreas Eriksson and their histories with the comic and their roles as joint editors for the magazine. We then ask the questions about Fantomen 2023 and what we can expect. They will release the same amount of issues with the same amount of pages and a Christmas album and softcover album. The best news is that we will see another hardcover collection book like we saw in 2022 with the Heart of Darkness book. They gave us one clue which is that the stories are Team Fantomen and drawn and written by the same creators. We think we have an idea of the theme, do you? Let us know in the comments or on socials. Some of the other topics we touch upon are the future of the magazine, subscription and printing numbers, some of the new and or returning creators we will see in 2023 like Sal Velluto, Rafael Ruiz, Phillip Madden, David Bishop and Anna Weatherley. One interesting subject was how and why they select Frew stories to print in their own magazines. The other interesting path was how they plan to go ahead with the Sandal Singh and 22nd Phantom plots and how the death of Claes Reimerthi has caused them to rethink the future of the storylines. If you are a patreon of Chronicle Chamber, do not forget if you are a patreon all sneak peaks from Art of Play Games will be first shown to our $5 and above level Patreons, so now is the perfect time to join. If you have any questions we did not cover, please let us know and or add them to our YouTube Channel and or social media profiles, You can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your feedback at Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel. Support the show

Something a little special this time around as we interview Norwegian Ivan Pedersen who is a long time phan & has worked on 6+ publishers living the dream as a phan. Majority of phans who have a social media profile would know off Ivan. Jermayn Parker flies solo chatting with Ivan as they hash out some online arguments throughout the last 20 years. It is a rather in depth interview as we start at the beginning and go through his phan years to working on the character. As we found out, he has helped coloured stories, consulted and provided scans of original newspaper strips for a lot of publishers including Frew, Fantomet, Comics Revue, Hermes, Zauberstern and Dolmen. Has their been any other phan or person who has worked with more publishers? You will learn how Ivan ticks including his views on black and white verses colour and surprisingly the one Lee Falk story he would scrap from his collection of stories - yes you read that right! We also get Ivan's opinions on some subjects like our Phantom Bible, modifying or adding to Lee Falk's lore, being called a troll, publishers printing three or four daily panels to a line and much more.If you want to learn more about buying comics from his Facebook group here or you find his Fantomet (Norway) / Frew & newspaper stories index here.If you are a patreon of Chronicle Chamber, make sure you login to your patreon account as we have a bonus chat with Ivan which is just for our patreons. If you have any feedback on the subjects touched up, you can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your feedback at Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel. Support the show

Mikael Lyck takes over the reigns and leads the interview with special guest Robert Aman about his new book "When the Phantom Became Swedish". It is a rather provocative title and we are sure it will get some reactions from phans around the world. Please note, we do discuss several stories in this podcast which are listed here and may be worth a read before listening/watching this podcast.Sweden was leading the way in the 1960's and 1970's regarding many issues in Africa and teh world at the time and it naturally flowed into their comics. Some of the 'left leaning' elements included colonialism, major white families controlling natural resources, race, apartheid, environmental issues, gender equality etc and our Phantom helped solved these issues in Team Fantomen created stories. One of the interesting things we learnt in this podcast was that phans would write in and hold Lee Falk accountable with unacceptable elements by saying he was not processive enough and how the Team Fantomen creators would 'fix' these problems. We will include an example of this in a future article on our website.Through Robert Aman we also learn that Lee Falk was very positive and acceptable of what the Swedish creators were adding to his character.Along with the list of Team Fantomen stories there is some overlap with our initial X-Band: The Phantom Podcast #101 which you may also want to listen to as well. Other podcasts worth reading along with this is our interview with Ulf Granberg in episodes #97A and #97B and Magnus Knuttson in episode #119.To follow Robert Aman you can visit his social media page here and you can buy his books here and here.Do not forget, the first person to sign up as a patreon will receive a signed copy of the book. Another signed copy will be given to a patreon for the next seasonal prize (summer / winter) which will be drawn early December 2022.You can email us at chroniclechamber@gmail.com or chat with us via our social media profiles with your feedback at Facebook, Twitter and or Instagram. Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our YouTube Channel. Support the show

Every since we started this website and the X-Band: The Phantom Podcast one of the most common questions we have received is when will we get to hear from someone from King Features and or Hearst? It has always been a goal for us as we ourselves had a million and one questions that we wanted to ask. After 200 podcasts we got the chance and while we did not get to ask them all, we spent 90 minutes racing through as many questions as possible. A huge thanks must go to Tea Fougner who is the comics editor for the Phantom plus 60 other comic titles. She was great in answering as many questions as possible and some were not easy to answer. A brief list of the questions we asked in no particular order are:What is the approval process of new stories from Tony DePaul, Egmont and Frew Publishers? Is there a Phantom bible? Will we ever see a new Phantom TV Show and or Movie? The process from KFS point of view of the Matt Kyme and Shane Foley "Diana and the Heartbreakers Gang" story in Frew #1892.The Phantom and cross over stories with The Raven, Sir Falcon, Flash Gordon, Defenders of the Earth etcMoonstone  verses Dynamite Entertainment. What is the target audience of the Phantom?Targeting the next generation. The 100th Anniversary of The Phantom. It must be noted that she did choose not to answer one question but you will have to listen and or watch the podcast to find out which one.She also went over the history of King Features and Hearst and how they relate to our hero, the Phantom. As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. Andrew also joins us and we go over the story with him. What began as a 40 minute planned podcast has turned into a 80 minute discussion between Andrew Constant and the team (Jermayn Parker, Stephen East and Dan Fraser).Where do you sit with this story? We are joined by past Phantom Team Fantomen & Moonstone writer, Ben Raab who wrote 23 Phantom stories over a decade between 1999 and 2009.Some of his stories include the popular "The Spear of Destiny" saga, "The Hero", "The Invisible Phantom" which won Norwegian best story in 2001, the first team we see Kit and Heloise as the joint 22nd Phantom in "The First Assignment" for Team Fantomen. After Egmont he wrote several classic stories for Moonstone including the first two graphic novels "The Ghost Killer" and "The Singh Web" which was his adaption of the 1996 movie along with classic stories exploring the mythos of the Phantom in "Curse of the Phantom", "The Aviatrix" and "Legacy".Eager phans may know that Ben Raab has been making waves in Hollywood since with writing credits for "Warehouse 13", "Flash", "Arrow" and currently "Legacies". So obviously we end the podcast talking about how he would write a Phantom TV show series. One of the questions we ask is could the Phantom exist being a hero in Africa in a TV show with a possible white saviour label being used against him? Ben also tells us how he would write a Phantom TV show.As always the video will show slides, art examples and props as we discuss the Phantom. HAPPY BIRTHDAY FREW CREW!!! Tuesday 23 February we celebrated 5 years of the Frew Crew releasing their first comic and we discussed what they have done throughout the years. Plus we will try and play Nostradamus on what we think they will do in the future.Tale of the tapeAfter Jim Shepherd's death in April 2013, Judith and their son Stephen stepped in and kept the title alive. Stephen introduced a number of initiatives, such as the Frew website, purchased a license for the posters and brought in the infamous Replica Series. Stephen also started the process of improving the covers. In 2014 Dudley Hogarth came in to replace Stephen. Then in December 2015 Judith signed off and after almost two months of no Frew comics, Frew issue 1745 was released on 23 February 2016. It has been often described, particularly by members of Chronical chamber, as a Frew-naissance ever since. The Frew Crew are:Glenn Ford: Co-Director Rene White: Co-DirectorDudley Hogarth: PublisherSha Hua: Production CoordinatorFrank Schultz: Production ManagerIssues per Year Frew released are:2016: 282017: 362018: 422019: 382020: 34Key milestones of each year2016Colour (1748), first of heaps of Spada comics (1753), kiwi covers, 80th anniversary (1763), christmas album colour/theme (1772), Signature Series, Supanova stall and accompanying Supanova jam cover (1755) and posters Pholio series, Frew Crew badges2017Kid Phantom, Phantom’s World stand alone, Gaslight, Giant Size, first TPB, first themed annual (1774), Triptych cover (1792-4) and then poster, Phantom Universe cards and folder, Phile cards and folder (1775), sketch cover2018Frew 70th (1820), sequel/prequel stories to classics (Sin 1813) and Frew 70th, TPB 2, Kid Phantom Kollection2019War annual (1830), 1850 (Matt Kyme), 1852 (colour daily and BZ on cover), Frew trading cards, Jam story printed (1855), first graphic novel, Frew games boardgame kickstarter, Phantom Adventures Collection and door poster2020Kid Phantom & PW cancelled, TPB #3 out, Comixology2021 (so far)Frew Games boardgame released, TPB #4 out, We then asked a heap of questions:What has been the THREE best things they have doneWhat has been the THREE worst things they have doneIf Frew Crew were to end tomorrow, what would be their lasting legacy?Which has been your top THREE moments with Frew? What’s been your favourite Frew product? What’s been your favourite Frew comic/tpb?Looking into the future. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!It is The Phantoms 85th Birthday - on this day back in 1936, something amazing happened with the debut of a comic strip in the newspapers that has changed the world and many peoples lives. We at Chronicle Chamber have celebrated the birthday by talking about each of the decades in detail and going over what we believe are the key moments through out the Phantoms history.Have a listen and tell us what you agree with and do not agree with. Have we missed any key dates or moments? We would love to hear back from you. Here are a few moments we discussed in the podcast. The video will have images showing the dates.1930'sOath of The Phantom, Comics being published around the world, strong character development, top stories, world wide appeal.1940'sWW2, Frew Publications, Wilson McCoy and Alfred Bester filling in for Lee Falk and Ray Moore, First mainstream merchandise, serial featuring Tom Tyler, the first engagement, Mr Walker alias, love interests from other characters to Diana and The Phantom.1950'sHeaps of new countries (Brazil, Sweden, Indonesia, Denmark, Norway etc), Jungle Patrol, the good mark and the Female Phantom were both introduced. Our Phantom was first introduced as the 21st Phantom1960'sSy Barry started on the Daily and Sunday strips, modernisation of the Phantom being moved to Africa and Bengalla becoming independent breaking from its former colonialism rule. RGE/Semic started creating their own stories. Luaga, General Bababu, Eden, Rex, Whispering Woods, Keela Wee, Phantom Peak and Bomsbay Prison were all introduced.1970'sThe Phantom and Diana finally were married and then had two children. The stories from Sweden had a left lean towards them and emerged as the biggest producer of Phantom stories in the world. Old Man Mozz, Kit and Heloise, Dogai Singh, Mori tribe, Wasaki Tribe, origin of the Bandar friendship, the Dolphins, Hzz and Steggy were all introduced. The 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 18th Phantoms are all introduced to readers also.1980'sJim Shepherd took over Frew and modernised the comic. There was an explosion of merchandise in Australia and Sweden helped by the popularity of the clubs. Comic numbers sold in Brazil, Sweden and Australia all peaked. Defenders of the Earth was introduced. Fantomen Land in Sweden was opened and Frew went from the dominate blue cover to yellow strip top.1990'sThe 1996 Billy Zane movie, Sy Barry retiring and Lee Falk passing away was the big three of the decade. We were also introduced to Lubanaga, perhaps the biggest foe the 21st Phantom has ever dealt with. Fantomen moved to colour and Semic sold their rights to Egmont. Unfortunately with Lee Falk nearing his end and Sy barry retiring the newspaper stories hit an all time low. We also saw the 2040 Phantom TV show.2000'sMoonstone started publishing comics, Ulf Granberg was instrumental is saving the newspaper strips existence with Cleas Remeirthi and Tony DePaul. Continue decline in Egmont and Frew sales. Introduction of Sandal Singh and the Python as major arch nemeses to the 21st Phantom.2010'sEnd of an era with Ulf Granberg retiring and Jim Shepherd passing away. Frew Crew picked up the mantle and ran with it. Kid Phantom and Fantomen Kids started. Introduction to the Nomad and numerous swapping of newspaper artists. A bigger focus on Australian created content. We then discussed our favourite decades and had a go at predicting what we believe will be key moments throughout the 2020's.Make sure you stay with us and do not forget to subscribe and leave a review on our podcast and or our

Together with Jermayn and Dan they discuss The Phantom and colour specifically focusing on the Frew comic published in Australia. We discuss all means of topics including the quality of the product with the colouring in quality, comparing colour styles of DC and Marvel, comparing the paper quality and of course the impact it will mean to the price of the comic. What makes this podcast work is that Ankit and Kevin know what they are talking about having a history of comics outside the Phantom. We touch upon several discussions including the history of Indians comics and why colour is so important to them. Along with Kevin's knowledge of India, he also talked about his research into the Swedish market and even looked at why and what lessons Frew could learn with Swedens and Norways Fantomen and Fantomet change to colour in 1991.To finish the podcast we all answer some final questionsWill colour Frew comics generate new younger readers for the Frew Magazine?Should Frew publish all the comics in colour, keep black and white or do a nice mixture of both?If you were in charge of Frew, what would you do with the colour and black and white mix of comics? If you were in charge of Frew, would you colour newspaper reprint stories?Would you be happy with less Frew comics a year if all in colour? We would love to hear from you on what you think of this podcast episode along with your answers to the above questions. It is also our first time we have more than correspondence with both Mikael Lyck and Ankit Mitra reviewing comics from Sweden and India respectfully. We have updates on both Phantom Kickstarter Games, an updated Phantom country map, a revival of an old disappeared Phantom website, The Phantom at Coles and much more. Creator Grange Wallis is the artist behind the Frew Publications covers of the current "Ibis Mystery" saga (issues #1873 to #1876). In typical fashion, what started out as a recording for the next X-Band: The Phantom Podcast comics and news episode quickly became a detailed chat with Grange as he talked about his latest four covers. We have decided to release our chat with Grange as a stand alone podcast and our next, will be the latest comics and news in the Phantom world. This podcast is a brilliant insight into how Grange works and thinks as a phan but also a creator. Grange showed us the initial sketches of the four covers including what the covers almost looked like. He gave us a tiny sneak into the missing part five, we really did try and get more out of him, but he would not tell. He also talked about how cover #1873 and #1874 was based on a nod to the original covers by phan phavourite Antonio Lemos. When www.Deepwoods.org stopped being updated and as technology has improved the Phantom Wiki is now the best Phantom resource out there. What makes the website stand out against all other past and current resources is the accuracy of the vast information stored plus the dedication of the people involved. We at Chronicle Chamber countless times hear of creators, editors, companies and publishers all using the website for research, ideas and much more. One of the main contributors of the website is Marko Davidavic and we spend an hour chatting with him about his jounary as a Phantom phan, some great discovers of his research like the comic from Iran, his Sweden LFMBEC visit plus more. Please note, due to where Marko lived the Internet connection was not the best, we apologise ahead of time for that, however press on as you will enjoy listening to Marko's story as a Phantom phan and Phantom wiki researcher. On August 25 2016 a new concept was released by Frew called "Phantom's World" which consisted of stories from around the world never previously published by Frew (and in many cases English). Four years later the series has stopped and we look at the series in retrospect.Frew #1761 was the first Phantom's World issue and along with issues #1770 and #1771 it was part of the regular Frew series. Middle of 2017 with an influx of Frew's own created stories it made sense for the Phantom's World concept to be ran as a separate series. That separate series stopped in 2020 with Phantom's World #12. In total 15 Phantom's World issues were released we saw in total 43 stories majority of the readers had never seen before. This includes counting multi part stories like "The Queen of Saba" which had three parts. A further breakdown of these stories are:31 stories in total were previously published stories29 are Fratelli Spada stories2 other stories published by RGE (Brazil) and Charlton (USA)12 stories are new never previously published storiesThis includes four stories that were previously created for other companies but where not printed. These are "Expedition in the Jungle Pt1 & Pt2" and "The Honglong Kidnapping Pt1 & Pt2"."Expedition in the Jungle Pt1" was completed and planned as a sequel in 1973-74 but Ferri stopped working on the Phantom. Around 2000, Ferri and Felmang completed the story and the second part. One of things that many loved about the series was the range of writers and artists many Frew readers have never seen before. Unfortunately many of the creators are unnamed but some of the creators Frew readers had never seen prior included:Angelo TodaraoOsvaldo GrassettiGiovanni FiorentiniSenio PratesiAntonio SciottiRaul BuzzelliMario PedrazziRaul BuzzelliSanto D'AmicoDino LeonettiFrank VerolaGiorgio CambiottiAnnibale CasabiancaJosé MenezesWalmir AmaralWanderley MayhéJoe GillPat BoyetteThis list does not include Felmang, Germano Ferri and Pidde Andersson who had previously published Phantom stories. We go over the stories, the issues, our positives and negatives with the series. On this week's episode of ITHACONversations I talk to two people who have made major contributions to the Man of Steel. First is Louise Simonson, one of the featured guests of Ithacon 44. She is a comics legend, having worked as an editor for Marvel comics on titles like the Uncanny X-Men, as well as writing and creating characters like Marvel's Power Pack, Apocalypse, and Cable, as well as DC's Steel. She has also written for Spider-Man, Star Wars, the Fantastic Four, and Wonder Woman. My second guest on this episode is known as Brooklyn's number one Superman fan, and judging by his work that is possibly an understatement. For over 30 years, Sid Friedfertig has been collecting the Superman newspaper strips that were originally printed from 1939-1966. Most of these strips were thought to be lost and haven't been read by anyone other than Friedfertig in over half a century. With many strips written by Superman co-creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, these are major pieces of comics history, almost lost to time. Friedfertig's collections of Superman strips are a major undertaking and he talks all about it in this episode.  You can buy Sid Friedfertig's books on Amazon.
