562. This week we talk to Greta de Jong about civil rights in North Louisiana.  "Civil rights in North LA. Examining African Americans' struggles for freedom and justice in rural Louisiana during the Jim Crow and civil rights eras, Greta de Jong illuminates the connections between the informal strategies of resistance that black people pursued in the early twentieth century and the mass protests that emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Using evidence drawn from oral histories and a wide range of other sources, she demonstrates that rural African Americans were politically aware and active long before civil rights organizers arrived in the region in the 1960s to encourage voter registration and demonstrations against segregation." "Greta de Jong is Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her research focuses on the connections between race and class and the ways that African Americans have fought for economic as well as political rights from the end of slavery through the twenty-first century. She is the author of A Different Day: African American Struggles for Justice in Rural Louisiana, 1900-1970 (2002)." This week in Louisiana history. February 24, 1843. Living in a cities like Shreveport and Bossier, it can be hard to understand how there is even a possibility of not having access to food, but even within our cities there is food insecurity. Now imagine living in one of the many tiny towns in our state, and the issue of a food desert becomes much more severe because the big box stores we shop at are generally located within a city or large town. The Food Bank of NWLA is working with communities within Shreveport and Bossier to address food insecurity, as well as those tiny towns in our state. Martha Marak, Executive Director of the Food Bank of NWLA explains how they serve these people, and how First Methodist specifically impacts this work.   All of these mission partners and testimonies we share are the result of First Methodist Church Shreveport's loyal congregation. Prescriptions are potentially a life saving option for those with chronic illness, but the cost of these drugs provides a whole new set of issues and choices for the working poor. MLK Health Center is working with the community of Shreveport and Bossier to meet this need. The MLK Health Center and Pharmacy works with the working poor in our community who don't make enough to pay for insurance on their own, but also make more than would qualify them for assistance. Being in this income gap means any medical emergency will likely lead to bankruptcy, and a chronic illness will likely lead to homelessness due to the likely future inability to work because of the untreated illness.   All of these mission partners and testimonies we share are the result of First Methodist Church Shreveport's loyal congregation. Luvleen checked all the success boxes - graduating from Harvard with her BS and Wharton with her MBA and working at an investment bank and a consulting firm. But instead of checking more and more boxes, Luvleen stopped and made a decision - she would pursue her dream to become an entrepreneur, which eventually led to her becoming the youngest woman to take a company public.    In Women of Color Rise, we talk about aligning with your North Star - your joy, passion, strengths, and values. And the best time to do this is now. Luvleen is a great example of this. She spotted a unique market opportunity and now leads her 300 person company with her values so that people feel cared for and have fun. Luvleen is also mindful of her energy, rekindling her chanting and journaling practice, setting intentions, and using a “flip it” mentality to see tough situations in a positive light.    Get full show notes and more information here: https://analizawolf.com/ep-28-leading-an-organization-for-people-of-color-by-people-of-color-with-sharhonda-bossier

In this new Advent study, Matt Rawle explores the faith themes in the Christmas classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas! including, how did the Grinch's heart grow three sizes come Christmas morning? How did Christmas save the Grinch? Could it be that the very thing we think we hate is the one thing that changes our lives? This Advent and Christmas season, look at a familiar classic through the lens of faith and see how Christ speaks to us through our culture.   Here are some additional links discussed in today's show:    Tim Gombis' Study on Mark Wilco

Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr discuss how President Trump gave a 45-minute speech today, and the news media ignored it. This 2020 disputed election, with evidence of preplanned fraud continuing to come out in volumes indicating that hundreds of thousands of votes are probably fraudulent, may well be one of the biggest crises in our Nation’s entire history. Votes were cast by dead people, by people who did not legally live in that state, by people literally stealing another person’s vote before that person voted, by people creating totally fake ballots, and by people slipping in fake USB drives full of fake votes. If enough of this is found to be true, then Biden becoming President is not in keeping with the will of the voters.Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr regret the passing of Walter Williams, a well respected black conservative, as well as a successful syndicated columnist and author. He wrote and spoke extensively over the decades about many dangerous liberal threats to our American wellbeing, including liberal economics, the cause of the black family’s destruction, socialist-Marxist ideas, gun control, racism (by race hustlers), and teachers unions. In his lifetime, he wrote eleven books on related economic subjects. His last article was “Black Education Tragedy Is New”, was just published. Our American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, share their fun experiences as guest speakers at the Women’s Republican Club of Bossier, LA. If you would like to have them come speak at your group, you can contact them through American Ground Radio or through their American Mamas Facebook page. After a brief discussion about how critical the Georgia Senate Elections are in protecting the Supreme Court, Stephen Parr "Digs Deep" into the problems of “Defund the Police”. This is exactly what the Democrats want to do, and they plan to do it! The less police presence in a community the greater the crime rates will likely become, especially in communities where people are not as able protect themselves. This has been supported by a study of the Dallas, TX crime patterns. After talking about how “want-to-be” American Democrat dictators are behaving as if their own “stay home” edicts do not apply to themselves, Stephen Parr explains that Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has once again ordered the indoor shut down of restaurants and bars for another three weeks. Restaurant owner Mitch Spangler said he would not be in business any more if he did. He said he must stay open as a matter of survival for his family and his employees.

Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr are very concerned about the way the Democrat Party and its radical leftist supporters have been behaving. It is ignoring horrible factual statistics about black on black crime, shootings every weekend in its big cities, and trying to wipe out all elements of history related to the Confederacy, the KKK, and Jim Crow. Are they really going to tear down every American Statue the same way ISIS tore down every Roman statue when they went into Syria?Louis and Stephen are very concerned about what Mayor Perkins has done to every Shreveport business with his proclamation requiring businesses to require all customers to wear masks. Even Governor Edwards said he was not willing to go that far. There is reason to wonder if this proclamation is even legal.
Our @American Mamas, Teri Netterville and Denise Arthur, have an intense debate about whether it is better to follow the Mayor’s dictatorial demand to wear masks in Shreveport businesses or protest by going across the Red River to Bossier to shop without wearing a mask.
Do masks work? Not really. A study published on April 9th by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine says ”There is little evidence regarding the transmission of small aerosolized particulates of the size potentially exhaled by asymptomatic or presymptomatic individuals with COVID-19.” Especially useless are homemade masks, which we have been told we can use, because astoundingly 99.3% of particles that size get through a homemade mask!Congressman Mike Johnson is on the phone with Louis Avallone and Stephen Parr to talk about what he believes Makes America Great! The inability for churches to gather, due to sheltering-in-place orders has prompted some bishops in the United Methodist Church to allow for online communion. Bishop Cynthia Fierro Harvey, resident bishop in Louisiana, has allowed for online communion, "For such a time as this, we will allow virtual Holy Communion under the church’s theological understanding of “In Extremis” which means that, we will allow an irregular practice, like in other unprecedented times in the life of the church.”   To do this, she asked  Reverends Lane Cotton Winn and Juan Huertas help create options for pastors in the Louisiana Conference to celebrate the sacraments using technology.    Online communion is not mandatory and it has also not come without its fair share of debate. We visited with Rev. Juan Huertas who helped write the online material and answers questions about the debate.    Also in today’s episode - a poem about the online communion debate from Rev. Listener Submission: "Dear Mamas, I saw how our former President Obama tweeted out support for those high school kids standing up for gun reform. Why hasn’t he tweeted out support for our Bossier kids who are standing up for religious freedom? After all, religious freedom is under attack in our schools every single day!"We took this question to the Mamas, Teri and Denise, on Monday's "What Would Mama Do?" and got their thoughts on the prayer controversy in Bossier schools, and on the importance of religious freedom. In this episode of Confetti Park Storytime, we hear "The Fairy Fox of Bossier" by Iran Martin, from his book Grand’s Fairy Tales. Father and son are on a walk through the forests of Bossier to gather wood. They leave mother home cooking their supper, and she warns them not to be late. “I remember mother standing over her cooking pot, as was her custom, spicing a little of this, and a little of that,” recalls the son. When the men are walking, pushing their rickety cart, the father talks of a place where the limbs drop from trees, making for easy gathering. They continue searching for this place, and keep walking farther and farther, always thinking it is just a little bit ahead. “Soon we were overcome by weariness, and sat down to rest," says the son. "The sun was fast sinking behind silvery shreds of dark shadows. And not any wood had been found.” “Then, unexpected music swelled our senses with harps, flues, fiddles and the like….Suddenly, a wide berth of emerald colored glass appeared…from an open door within a giant majestic tree. We spring from the ground upward, pushing our cart aside, and took thoughtlessly through its opening.” So begins an adventure of dancing with elves, sprites, gnomes and other magical woodland creatures, all watched over by the Fairy Fox of Bossier. The men, who are enchanted by the music, pass a thrilling time dancing. But they do not realize that in this magical place, time has no meaning. They do not realize that ten years of mortal life have passed by! Only by petitioning the all-knowing and all-powerful Fairy Fox of Bossier will the men be able to return to their wife and mother, who was last seen cooking their supper by the wood fire. Their eyes are opened by their adventure to the meaningfulness of family, domesticity, and creature comforts. Also revealed: the precious gift and strange nature of time. Iran and Henryell live in Bossier City, in north Louisiana. They are native New Orleanians who moved to north Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina. "The Fairy Fox of Bossier" and all of the tales and fables in Grand’s Fairy Tales are steeped in Louisiana folklore and imagery of the forests, bayous and other water ways of our beautiful state. And many of them offer a moral for the reader to take away. Also: Listen to Iran Martin read "The Beaver’s Tale of Greed." Buy Grand’s Fairy Tales on Amazon.
