The topic of government has perhaps never been more relevant or important, making us all the more thankful for Sharon McMahon, the former high school teacher, podcaster and New York Times best-selling author known to her million-plus Instagram followers as Sharon Says So. Lovingly called America's Government Teacher, she became a social media star during the pandemic after posting a simple explanation of the Electoral College online, and thus, a movement was born. Today, the Duluthian is a household name thanks to her smart and savvy way of explaining the happenings of the world using non-partisan, fact-based information, a rare and refreshing feat in the age of clickbait and doomscrolling. With a massively successful podcast and docuseries, a brand new book and an empire all her own, there's no doubt Sharon McMahon is going down in the history books she loves so much. Sharon joined us for a conversation via Zoom to talk about her whirlwind journey to fame and her soulful connection to Duluth in this season five finale.
We discuss the importance of shifting our mindset to one that is infused with hope. Positive change comes when we choose hope. Though nobody can fix it all, we can all do something and make an impact. Sharon reminds us that if something is worth doing for everyone, it's worth doing for one person. Sharon's civic action toolkit recommendations are: Choose hope. Get involved in an issue that is important to you because your actions do matter. Sharon McMahon is the creator of “Sharon Says So” and host of the “Here's Where it Gets Interesting” podcast. She's also the author of The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement. Let's connect! Celebrating the giants of American history — the George Washingtons, the Abraham Lincolns, the Martin Luther King Jrs — is important, but behind every larger-than-life American icon is, as Sharon McMahon calls her new book, The Small and the Mighty. The full title of Sharon's book, which is out September 24, is The Small and the Mighty: Twelve Unsung Americans Who Changed the Course of History, from the Founding to the Civil Rights Movement, and all of these 12 unsung American heroes are extraordinary. As Sharon writes, “How many more Americans who changed the course of history are waiting to be discovered?” And in writing this book and telling the stories of these 12, I could tell with every page and Sharon's poetic prose that she wanted to inspire the rest of us to do what we can in our corners of the world to make the world a better place, too. As she writes of the 12 she chose, “None of them could do it all, but they all could do something. These are the small and the mighty. And we can be too.” As she puts it, “It's the small who truly are the mighty.” It's interesting, because I find Sharon herself to be an unsung hero — although, as her profile rises and rises, she is very deservedly getting her flowers. Sharon has become known as “America's Government Teacher” and is a podcaster, author, Instagram influencer, and law and government teacher. Sharon's content on her podcast, Instagram, and other platforms mostly centers around civics and history-focused material, and she is particularly interested in combatting misinformation from both sides of the aisle and providing a nonpartisan explanation on the application of constitutional law to contemporary American politics. If you don't already follow her work, you must. Sharon is a longtime high school law and government teacher and started publishing politics-oriented content to her Instagram during the pandemic back in 2020, mostly as a response to what she saw as rising misinformation on her own social media feeds amid not just the pandemic but also the presidential election that year. And there's no better time to follow Sharon as we are once again in a presidential election year, just in case you weren't aware. Kidding. Sharon then launched Government for Grownups, a workshop series about U.S. history and government, and is also deeply involved in philanthropy, as well, continually using her platform for good. Her podcast is called “Here's Where It Gets Interesting,” and her Instagram is called “Sharon Says So.” She is a remarkable woman that I can't wait for you to learn from today. Take a listen. In this engaging podcast episode, Suzy reflects on the transformative power of pushing through resistance and embracing change. Drawing from her own experiences and a conversation with Sharon McMahon (known as Sharon Says So), the episode underscores the importance of following one's unique path, even when it's unclear where it might lead. They discuss how life can present unexpected twists and turns, and how seemingly unrelated experiences can come together to create something remarkable. Sharon's journey from teaching to becoming a prominent figure in educating others about government and current events serves as a powerful example of embracing change and embracing one's true calling.Sharon McMahon is on a mission to curate facts, fun, and inspiration by educating Americans on democracy, politics, and history. In this episode, I sit down with the lively and inspiring Sharon McMahon, popularly known by her Instagram handle, Sharon Says So. A former high school government and law teacher, her mission is to educate people to make their own well-educated decisions. Her love for the Constitution is at the root her Instagram, and if you have no idea how someone could love the US Constitution, listen in to find out who Sharon is. During 2020, instead of getting into arguments, she created short, nonpartisan, fact-based videos, and the rest is her-story. I'm a fan—and as it turns out, she's been following me as well. This conversation is packed with goodness!
Earlier this week, we told you about the Disinformation Governance Board. It's a new group within the Department of Homeland Security. Officials say it will fight the spread of misleading or false information that could have real-life consequences, especially when it comes from the Russian government or human smugglers. But there's not a lot of information yet about how it will work. Some even worry it will turn into something like the fictional “Ministry of Truth” that pushed state-sponsored propaganda in the novel “1984.” We hope to break down the arguments from both sides of this and clear up any confusion you may have after seeing some of the headlines. To help us do that, we're welcoming back the woman known as “America's government teacher,” and host of the popular podcast “Sharon Says So,” Sharon McMahon. In this episode, Sharon talks with social activist Ashley Spivey about how American Samoa became a U.S. territory. While we all grew up learning facts about states in our history and government classes, U.S. territories are often left out of the conversation. Sharon talks about how American Samoa became of interest to the U.S., and how the South Pacific Ocean archipelago is represented in government. Of course, no Sharon Says So episode would be complete without a few fun facts, and Sharon has plenty to share about this tropical territory! We have never had so much access to up to date information about what is happening in the world. This is a new phenomenon and it's also a new phenomenon to have so much influence. So what do we do as a brand when there are current events going on, like a war or social justice issues? Do we speak up? Do we not speak up? It seems like it's a catch 22 and there's no right answer. Well, there actually is a right answer and I get to the bottom of it with my friend, Sharon McMahon from Sharon Says So. This episode was an Instagram Live where I asked Sharon some questions that we can ask ourselves to determine when it's time to speak up and when it's time to just grow our business. There's truly no such thing as an overnight success. Mandi Gubler spent years working on her first blog, Vintage Revivals. Her site launched when blogging was still an emerging industry and unlike her competitors, Mandi refused to accept every sponsorship offer that came her way, holding out for a few brands on her dream list. Eventually, as the success of her blog grew, those dream brands came knocking. And her fan base, impressed with Mandi's commitment to authenticity, expanded. But every good thing comes to an end. While her love for learning new skills fended off the natural burnout most creators experience, a TV show with the Magnolia Network expedited her exhaustion. Tight deadlines and grueling renovation work led Mandi to look elsewhere for a creative income. Luckily, she'd been working on a new blog for the past year: Happy Happy Houseplant. Moving an audience from one familiar brand to another is no easy feat, but Mandi pulled it off. As her business transitioned, so did her business model, and at the advice of a fellow creator, Mandi began selling physical products rather than relying on sponsorships. As a result, Mandi finally got off the neverending hamster wheel that is creating content, scouting brands, and doing it all over again. In this episode, Charli, Haley, and Miguel chat with Mandi about the difference between sponsorships and selling physical products, how to create a product that your audience actually wants, and her perspective on fending off creator burnout. Key Takeaways [03:11] - Have you heard? [03:27] - Sharon McMann (or Sharon Says So) is a news and education content creator. Her content is extremely helpful, especially now as we try to make sense of the complex Ukraine-Russia conflict. [05:01] - TikTok is expanding into long-form videos. [06:05] - Instagram is discontinuing IGTV. [08:38] - Main Topic: Mandi Gubler on Content vs. Physical Goods. [08:52] - Mandi started a blog in 2010 called Vintage Revivals. In the past decade, it's experienced tremendous growth. [10:05] - Five years ago Mandi bought a building and turned it into a home. She was even featured on the Magnolia Show, In With The Old. [12:50] - Vintage Revivals' main source of income is sponsorships. Mandi held out for the brands she truly loves. That authenticity has ultimately been reflected in her success and her sponsorship rates. [17:08] - Mandi's love for learning helped her avoid the burnout that living on the creator hamster wheel so often creates. However, when she landed a TV show, the tight deadlines and exhausting work led her to pivot and dive headfirst into a new business. [31:20] - Mandi knew her audience well which allowed her to create a product that resonated with them. [32:47] - Different from the sponsorship model, selling a physical product allowed Mandi more time to focus on new product development and providing value to her audience. [39:39] - Mandi had to choose between her two businesses and it was difficult given that her identity was so entwined with Vintage Revivals. [44:40] - When you care about the content you're creating and the people you're creating it for, that's a marker of success. And when you're building a brand and you're building it around serving people, you're always more successful. [45:39] - Submit your listener shoutout! [46:17] - A sneak peek at next week's episode. Quotes[13:46] - “That was something that was really important to me when everyone was talking about all these different paint lines and different posts and for me that just felt really inauthentic and like, you're clearly just doing this because you're getting paid, what do you actually like? So it was really important for me to have stuff that I really stood behind. And so that works out really well with sponsors.” ~ Mandi Gubler[17:58] - “Truthfully, I really love the creative process. For me, I'm not driven by money or status or really anything other than experience. I love learning new things. And so to take on a project like figuring out how to make tile, that is when I am my best self, is when I'm trying to do things and failing and reworking things.” ~ Mandi Gubler[26:30] - “You have to have a physical product. It's so much better than just doing sponsorships and being on this kind of content creation hamster wheel.” ~ Mandi Gubler[30:28] - “We're sharing the best information that actually helps people, we have the most amazing products, and we're coming out with some really, really exciting ones, and it's working because it's what people want.” ~ Mandi GublerLinks Watch The Future Belongs to Creators on YouTube Mandi Gubler Happy Happy Houseplant Vintage Revivals Sharon Says So The Daily Podcast TikTok Instagram In With The Old Sherwin-Williams The Home Depot Alt Summit Kirsten Grove / Simply Grove Jenny Komenda Henry Thong Nathan Barry Submit your creator wins and be featured on an upcoming listener shoutout! My guest today is Sharon McMahon, of Sharon Says So. She's a former high school government and law teacher who earned her reputation as America's government teacher amidst the historic 2020 proceedings for her viral efforts on Instagram to educate the general public on political misinformation. Through a simple mission to share non-partisan information about democracy, Sharon has amassed hundreds of thousands of followers online, affectionately called the “Governerds,” who look to her for truth and logic in a society plagued by bias and conspiracy. 4:55 – Sharon 101 Her goal is to give people education so they can make their own educated opinions and not have a viewpoint shoved down their throat. She also has fun and doesn't take herself very seriously. 6:09 – Entrepreneurial background She did door-to-door sales as a child and sold Girl Scouts cookies. She also created her own bookmarks and sold them to neighbors when she was 10 years old and made $50 in one weekend. 9:15 – Career path Sharon went to college to be a teacher but thought about going into the medical profession. She eventually determined she was destined to be a teacher. 12:22 – Businesses and Instagram Her career path is bizarre and was not a straight-line trajectory. She got really into knitting and people started asking her for custom knitting projects, but it wasn't profitable. A customer asked her to dye some yarn, and she realized that dyeing yarn was more profitable than knitting. She grew her hand-dyeing business into one of the largest studios in the world and eventually sold the business to one of her employees. She started taking pictures of knitting patterns and projects, and people started asking her to take their pictures. She then became a photographer and eventually started Sharon Says So. 20:18 – Hot topics in a nonpartisan way That skill of not taking a position and providing fact-based information is something she developed in the classroom. She found that the more you argue with somebody about their opinions, the more deeply they begin to hold them. 23:10 – Opinions based on emotion Most of our opinions do not exist because somebody has rationally examined all the facts and then made a determination. We mostly make a determination and then find facts to support our opinion. 28:29 – Rapid growth and challenges Sharon Says So has had such rapid growth, and she constantly feel like she's not doing enough or helping enough people. The amount of hate she gets is miniscule compared to the kindness people show her. 38:03 – A common bond Sharon and I have something in common – we each have a parent, my mother and her father, who were Vietnam veterans and died from Agent Orange exposure. 45:20 – Generosity She has raised millions of dollars for eliminating medical debt and helping people in need. Her dream has been to be rich like Oprah or Ellen and give away money to help people without a second thought. 57:35 – Get to know you Favorite non-living president not for political reasons? James Madison because he was fascinating and John Adams for his intelligence and principle. Favorite whale? Humpbacks FEATURED QUOTES Most of our opinions do not exist because somebody has rationally examined all the facts and then made a determination. We mostly make a determination and then find facts to support our opinion. – Sharon My goal is to give you education so that you can make your own educated opinions and not have a viewpoint shoved down your throat. – Sharon That skill of not taking a position and providing fact-based information is some-thing I developed in the classroom. – Sharon The more you argue with somebody about their opinions, the more deeply they begin to hold them. – Sharon CONNECT WITH SHARON: https://www.sharonmcmahon.com/ https://www.instagram.com/sharonsaysso/ THANK YOU TO OUR PARTNERS: Ready to ditch the bleach forever but can't find a bleach alternative that actually works? In this solo episode of Sharon Says So, Sharon breaks down one of her most asked questions - what's the deal with Texas, and can they really secede? Rooted in the United States Constitution, Sharon will explain the fundamental law of the land and how Texas is bound to these laws through its own state Constitution. A few myths are debunked throughout the episode - going back to the origin of the state in 1845 and the creation of its own state constitution. She shares the four reasons why this cannot happen, and why Texas doesn't really want to secede anyway - Texas will always be The Lone Star State, no matter what. This week, Sharon Says So shared about us on her account and with that, we welcomed thousands of you to our community! This table just got a whole lot bigger! One of the first things we asked you as you joined our community was, "What you want to know about us OR hospitality." Countless responses came in surrounding the topic of where to event start with hospitality and the topic of developing confidence. We decided to put the questions together to create a guide that we believe is a starting place for not just becoming a host, but becoming one that hosts gatherings that welcome, create belonging and connection. These 10 guidelines can act as building blocks as you work towards reframing what hospitality looks like in our culture and your home! Here are the 10 Topics we will work through: 1: Seeing a need & willingness to go first2: Willingness to fail 3: Commitment to growth: Personally & practically 4: Becoming the designated diffuser & difficult conversation manager 5: Prioritizing ambiance 6: Creating food intentionally 7: Shifting from Untouchable to intentional hospitality 8: Creating Systems & Stations 9: Auditing your kitchen 10: Working towards leading with vulnerability and authenticity See this list as a way to identify where you need to grow, what you do well and where you need to head next! As creators, we're always fueled and inspired by other talented creators. Sometimes we're even surprised by the ones who move us. Because it doesn't matter what their specialty or background or audience size looks like – when someone speaks to you, it's very hard not to listen. So who speaks to you? In today's episode, Haley and Miguel discuss the creators they love and the reasons these creators have a special place in their hearts and their feeds. From authors to woodworkers, athletes and teachers, these are the people who inspire us online and give creators a good name.“This particular creator is talking about sinkholes. 10 million views is a lot of views, that's not like a niche topic. There are a lot of people that were interested in that!
