On September 28, 2000, former Indiana State trooper David Camm returned to his Floyd County, Indiana home to find his wife and children murdered. After three trials and thirteen years in prison, he was acquitted. Camm's case remains known as one of the most egregious wrongful convictions in Indiana's recent history. So what did happen to the Camm family? Why did investigators hone in on Camm despite the fact a violent felon's DNA was found at the murder scene? What was the real story of all the blood evidence used to arrest and convict Camm?Retired Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Gary Dunn was kind enough to share with us a copy of the probable cause affidavit in Camm's case. Dunn investigated Camm's case for the defense, and chronicled his experience in the book Their Bloody Lies and Persecution of David Camm: Part One. It's a great book that delves deeply into the crime. He is working on part two.In this episode, we will go through the entire PCA with Gary, and he will explain the weaknesses and fabrications in the case.By Gary's detailed book on the case: Their Bloody Lies and Persecution of David CammAlso, check out Gary's website on the case, to read the first chapter for free: https://www.theirbloodylies.com/A report from the News and Tribune on the day of the Camm family murders: https://www.newsandtribune.com/news/local_news/normal-day-ended-in-murder-for-camm-family/article_27335bd2-cdaf-5cfc-bb31-e104409b464d.htmlA WAVE report on the 2006 trial: https://www.wave3.com/story/4488420/february-9-2006-day-24-pieces-to-the-puzzle/A WAVE report on the 2006 conviction: https://www.wave3.com/story/4600249/camm-jurors-say-they-were-swayed-by-medical-evidence/A News and Tribune report on the case: https://www.newsandtribune.com/news/local_news/judge-drops-conspiracy-charge-against-david-camm/article_30761d6b-85e4-5d1f-86c2-750c089e9b0c.htmlA post from Officer.com on the Camm case: https://www.officer.com/home/article/10250471/murder-on-lockhart-roadA WDRB report on Donald Forrester's role in the Camm case: https://www.wdrb.com/news/david-camm-blog-jailhouse-informants/article_23d3b6e8-8a19-5cba-98e3-1aecaa2c410f.htmlA report from WAVE on the third and final trial in the Camm case: https://www.wave3.com/story/23652064/camm-trial-109-prosecutors-smack-touch-dna-favorable-to-camm-as-unreliable/A WAVE report on calls relevant to the Camm case: https://www.wave3.com/story/23394189/camm-trial-827-camm-called-investigator-wifes-employer-before-arrest/A WDRB report on Janice Renn's testimony: https://www.wdrb.com/news/david-camm-blog-janice-renn-testifies/article_9f6128c6-d70d-5bbe-971e-8b86c87f545c.htmlAnother book by John Glatt on the case: One Deadly Night: A State Trooper, Triple Homicide, and a Search for JusticeThe Murder Sheet participates in the Amazon Associate program and earns money from qualifying purchases.Send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC .See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Join Mind Over Murder podcast co-hosts Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley for our annual True Crime Holiday Gift Guide for 2023. Kristin creates a list of some of the best books and other gift ideas, and we discuss why they would make a great gift for your favorite true crime fan, including yourself. Thanks to all of you for your support this year. Happy Holidays!True Crime Holiday Gift Guide 2023 Welcome to the true crime holiday gift guide for 2023. If you don't know what to get for the true crime aficionado in your life, never fear … the True Crime Holiday Gift Guide is here! We're happy to offer you our humble opinions on the best books of this year, as well as recommendations for other crime themed gifts as well. Sit back, relax, grab a cup of seasonal coffee, and peruse the list. Whenever possible, we encourage you to support small businesses by buying these books direct from the author or from indie bookstores. In Light of All Darkness—Kim Cross. For my money, this is the best true crime book of the entire year, if not one of the best I've ever read. Kim Cross offers the book of record on the Polly Klaas kidnapping, investigation, and aftermath. It's the most thoroughly researched and well-written book on the case, and it alternately had me in tears of rage and sympathy. Highly recommended! We interviewed Kim on episode #307 of Mind Over Murder, which ran October 9, 2023. Tangled Vines—John Glatt. This year has seen new twists and turns in the Murdaugh and Murdaugh-adjacent cases and a lot of media coverage as a result. Out of the myriad books, documentaries, and podcasts related to the case, one stands out over the others and that's this book from veteran true crime author John Glatt, which offers the most comprehensive look at the case and the closest accounting of the damage the Murdaugh dynasty has done to the Low Country over the years. We interviewed John on episode #289 of Mind Over Murder which ran August 7, 2023. We liked our conversation with John Glatt so much we ran it again as a Thursday bonus episode on October 19, 2023. Lost Girls—Robert Kolker. The Long Island Serial Killer (LISK) case (or Gilgo Beach case) came roaring back into the spotlight in July with the arrest of Rex Heuermann as the suspected killer of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Melissa Barthelemy, Shannan Gilbert, Megan Watermen, and Amber Costello, as well as other unidentified victims on nearby Fire Island. While the case continues to unfold in the media, catch up on the lives of the victims and the early theories of the case with Kolker's 2014 book. We interviewed Bob on episode 301 of Mind Over Murder Monday, September 18, 2023. We also recently discussed whether Rex Heuermann could be connected with the unsolved Route 29 Stalker case in Virginia with Sarah Sherman Soule just recently on December 4, episode #323. A Light in the Dark—Kathy Kleiner Rubin. It's time to stop caring about Ted Bundy. His victims deserve our attention. Serial survivor Kathy Kleiner Rubin's story is the one you want to be reading instead. A survivor of childhood lupus, breast cancer, Hurricane Katrina, and the horrific attack by Bundy, Kathy's story is the light in the dark that we all need to guide us in times of trouble. Don't miss this amazing and hopeful book. We interviewed Kathy in our episode dated October 30, 2023 of Mind Over Murder, episode #313. In My DNA—Lindsey Wade. Case work at its finest is on display in this great new book from Investigator Lindsey Wade. Her career is notable for her focus on cold cases that can be solved with DNA, especially those of two missing young women in Seattle. Join Lindsey for an absolutely intriguing look at her cases and her career. We interviewed Lindsey on episode #315 of Mind Over Murder, dated November 6. Evidence of Things Seen—Sarah Weinman. A follow-up to her amazing collection of long-form true crime pieces UNSPEAKABLE ACTS, Sarah's newest collection EVIDENCE OF THINGS SEEN takes a lean toward social justice and the ethics of true crime. A much-needed spotlight is shed on these increasingly serious matters, leaving the reader with a lot to ponder. We interviewed Sarah about this collection on episode #249 of Mind Over Murder on March 20, 2023. We liked to so much we re-ran it as a bonus episode on October 5. America Autopsy—Dr. Michael Baden. Ask any true crime fan to name forensic experts and several names will rise to the top … Dr. Henry Lee, Dr. Cyril Wecht, and, above all, Dr. Michael Baden. Dr. Baden not only reflects on his amazing career but also on the very real issues of racism in policing through gripping stories of his most challenging cases. We interviewed Dr. Baden about his work on episode #282 of Mind Over Murder on July 13, 2023. The Hunt for Brianna Maitland—Greg Overacker. One of the most confounding cases to come out of Vermont over the last two decades is the disappearance of Brianna Maitland. Private Investigator Greg Overacker has written the definitive book of record on the case, using his own investigation into Brianna's disappearance and probable murder as a stepping stone. We interviewed Greg Overacker last week, on Mind Over Murder episode #325. In the Damage Path—Dr. Katherine Ramsland. Dr. Ramsland's Nutcracker series is our one nod to fiction on this list. This rip-roaring installment sees Annie Hunter (modeled on the good doctor herself) knee deep in a mysterious crime on the Outer Banks of North Carolina … and she's in for some nasty weather to boot! The answer to the question “how is a serial killer like a violent storm” can be found in these well-written pages. Look for several episodes with Dr. Ramsland earlier this season, most recently on July 24, 2023 as episode #285. A Murder in Hollywood—Casey Sherman. This excellent new book from Casey Sherman of HELLTOWN fame will not be out until February 2024 but we urge you to preorder it! This glitzy, gritty look at the murder of Hollywood starlet Lana Turner's abusive boyfriend Johnny Stompanato is full of first-rate storytelling and writing. Look for our episode with Casey Sherman in February…and look for Kristin's blurb on the back cover of the book!  The Murdaugh family saga continues to unravel, revealing a tale of tragedy, deception, and possibly, calculated murder. The recent discussion between Tony Brueski, host of the "Hidden Killers" podcast, and author John Glatt, who has written extensively about the Murdaugh family, sheds new light on the complexities of the relationships within the family and the repercussions of the boat crash involving Paul Murdaugh that might have set the stage for the family's demise.    In 2019, Paul Murdaugh was indicted for causing the death of 19-year-old Mallory Beach by being under the influence of alcohol while operating a boat. This event, as John Glatt suggests, was the catalyst that exposed the secrets of the Murdaugh family, eventually leading to the indictment of Alex Murdaugh, Paul's father, for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul.    "The boat crash set the ball rolling for their destruction," Glatt explains, suggesting that the incident affected not only the public's perception of the family but also the relationship between Alex and Paul. Despite this, Alex remained supportive of Paul. Glatt mentioned an incident where Alex and his father, Randolph, went to the hospital immediately after the boat crash to manage the crisis and "shut everybody up about what happened."    This support, however, might have been driven by a desire to protect the family name rather than genuine care for his son. "The Murdoch family bond, you know, they stick together for the Murdoch family name," Glatt adds, referring to an interview with Alex's son, Buster, in which he defended his father. This interview is noteworthy because it reveals the internal struggle and pressure to support the family despite the evidence and public opinion.    Glatt, who listened to more than 200 conversations between Alex and his family from jail, believes that the support from the family is more about maintaining the family's reputation rather than genuine belief in Alex's innocence. He notes the strain in the relationship between Buster and Alex, revealing how Alex manipulated situations from behind bars, such as organizing a birthday party for Paul through a third party and pressuring Buster to put flowers on Maggie's grave, all while showing no remorse for their deaths.    This lack of remorse, coupled with the bizarre behavior displayed by Alex, such as organizing a birthday party for his deceased son, led Glatt to label him as a narcissist and sociopath. "He was happier talking about football games and how much he'd won from fellow prisoners in various games... but there was very zero remorse," Glatt states. Despite the conviction and mounting evidence against him, Alex continues to receive support from his family, who are embroiled in legal battles to access his insurance policies to pay for his lawyers.    Glatt believes that Alex will never admit guilt or show remorse for the deaths of his wife and son. Instead, he will remain actively involved in the upcoming trials and continue to manipulate those around him to maintain a semblance of control and influence. "He's probably very actively involved in all these civil trials, all these criminal trials that are coming up, so he is occupied. But once those finished, how's he gonna occupy his time? Who knows?" Glatt concludes, leaving the question hanging in the air, a chilling reminder of the enigmatic nature of Alex Murdaugh and the unresolved mysteries surrounding the ill-fated Murdaugh family. The Murdaugh family of South Carolina has been a powerful and respected presence in the community for generations, with many members serving as solicitors and lawyers. However, recent events and allegations have cast a shadow over the family's reputation, leading to a reexamination of their past actions and the culture that enabled them.    In a recent episode of the podcast "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski and author John Glatt discuss the Murdaugh family, focusing on Alex Murdaugh and his upbringing. Glatt, who has spoken to people close to the family, describes Alex as being "spoiled rotten" and "entitled" from a young age, an attitude that he carried into adulthood. He recounts stories of Alex's wild behavior, including an incident at a strip club that led to a fight and police intervention, only for the officers to let Alex go upon realizing who he was.    This special treatment contributed to Alex's belief that he was above the law, a mindset that may have contributed to his ultimate downfall. Glatt suggests that Alex's sense of entitlement, coupled with a 20-year addiction to opiates, may have led to the series of events that culminated in multiple criminal charges against him. Alex has been indicted for drug possession, drug dealing, and drug manufacturing, among other charges.    While the role of drugs in the Murdaugh family saga is still unfolding, there have long been questions about the family's involvement in the drug trade. Alex paid his cousin Eddie Smith thousands of dollars for drugs, and there is speculation that the family may have been involved in drug smuggling. This remains unconfirmed, but as Glatt notes, the numerous upcoming trials will likely shed more light on the matter.    Alcohol also played a significant role in the Murdaugh family dynamic. Alex's children, Buster and Paul, were exposed to alcohol from a young age and encouraged to drink by their parents. This permissive attitude towards alcohol contributed to a culture of excess and recklessness that ultimately proved disastrous. Paul was heavily intoxicated at the time of a boat crash that resulted in the death of Mallory Beach, an incident that marked the beginning of the end for the Murdaugh family's once unassailable reputation.    The conversation also touches on the role of nature versus nurture in shaping Alex's behavior. While it's unclear whether Alex has a mental disorder that contributed to his actions, the combination of a potentially natural chemical imbalance, special treatment from a young age, and a long-term addiction to opiates created a perfect storm that may have led to the creation of a "monster."    The fall of the Murdaugh family is a story of privilege, entitlement, and a lack of accountability that spanned generations. The upcoming trials will hopefully provide more answers and a measure of justice for those affected by the actions of Alex Murdaugh and his family. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? The Murdaugh family has long been a prominent name in the low country of South Carolina, with roots going back over a hundred years to Alex's great-grandfather, Randolph Murdaugh Sr. He founded his own law business in 1910, which later became the family law firm, PMPE, and in 1920, was elected as a solicitor for five counties in the low country. The family has always been deeply involved in the community, becoming "like the fabric of Hampton County and the other four counties," according to author John Glatt in an episode of the "Hidden Killers" podcast hosted by Tony Brueski.    Glatt discussed how the Murdaughs would often help out people in the community who were in need, for example by contributing money to help families who had experienced a fire or illness. This, in turn, helped establish a special place for the Murdaughs in the community. However, he also noted that despite their public face as a philanthropic family, there were also darker aspects to the Murdaugh legacy. For example, Alex's grandfather, Buster Murdaugh, was arrested and went to trial in the mid-fifties for conspiracy to aid moonshiners, a case covered extensively in Glatt's book, "Tangled Vines". Although he was ultimately found not guilty, the sheriff indicted with him served time in prison. Moreover, there were allegations of bribery, and the judge expressed his disdain for how Buster Murdaugh had behaved.    Glatt also touched upon rumors that tied the Murdaughs to a big drug smuggling ring in the seventies, although this was never substantiated. Nevertheless, several of the Murdaughs' close friends were indicted in relation to this. Despite these allegations, Glatt noted that the community generally stood by the Murdaughs, seeing them as helping those in need during desperate times. However, there was also an element of fear, with people not wanting to cross the Murdaughs.    He provided an example of this by recounting the story of a sheriff who tried to get Buster Murdaugh indicted but ultimately ended up in jail himself. This sheriff had tried to make a deal by testifying against the Murdaughs, but it did not go as planned. Glatt indicated that this was an example of "Murdaugh justice", with money allegedly changing hands and bribes taking place even in the court where Murdaugh was prosecuting.    When Brueski asked how far the Murdaugh's influence reached beyond their law firm, Glatt explained that they especially controlled the police in the five counties of the low country, regularly holding social events attended by police chiefs, judges, and others, which helped them maintain close relationships and manipulate things to their advantage.    In conclusion, the Murdaugh family has long been a powerful force in the South Carolina low country, both for their philanthropy and the darker aspects of their legacy. The "Hidden Killers" podcast reveals that while they may have been revered and respected in the community, there was also a darker side to their influence, involving allegations of bribery, corruption, and manipulation of the legal system. It is clear that the Murdaugh family's legacy is one that is both complicated and controversial. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh found an unlikely mentor behind bars: a lifelong criminal. This surprising relationship is explored in John Glatt's new book, "Tangled Vines: Power, Privilege and the Murdaugh Family Murders." Glatt, a bestselling true-crime author, delves into the Murdaugh family's ascent to power, the double homicide that shocked the nation, and how the former attorney adapted to life in prison.    “We really hit it off, and I liked him,” Murdaugh was quoted as saying to his sister-in-law in 2022. “He was always in trouble with guns but laid-back and very jail-smart. He taught me a lot about being in here that helped me.”    This unusual mentorship forms a key aspect of Glatt's narrative. According to Glatt, the patriarch befriended a "hardened" criminal who had spent most of his life in prison. This unnamed lawbreaker became "a mentor for the former attorney and assistant solicitor."    Glatt reveals that the jailhouse calls he obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request made by another reporter were crucial to understanding Murdaugh's life behind bars.    “I listened to every one of those 200 calls,” Glatt explained. “... He didn't talk a lot about what happened, but he would talk about his life in prison. And it was amazing how he'd settled in. He was a gambler. He loved all the basketball games, especially the Gamecocks. He was a sports enthusiast. And that didn't change behind bars.”    Murdaugh was found guilty of murdering his wife and son, a crime allegedly committed to cover up his financial wrongdoings. Despite this, he seemed to adapt remarkably well to prison life, a transformation Glatt attributes to the guidance of his new mentor.    "He assimilated very easily into the jail system," he explained. "… He was a master manipulator, which you could hear from the jailhouse calls."    The mentor's influence is palpable in Murdaugh's activities behind bars. He made friends over poker and chess, but remained cautious "against a possible snitch." He also described befriending a confidante who did him favors in exchange for small bribes.    “It would amaze you, the trade system in here,” Murdaugh told his brother. “And how innovative these folks are and resourceful with so little. I'll have to tell you about it later and not on the phone because I know they listen to every single phone call I make.”    Murdaugh's jailhouse activities and the financial trades he engineered, Glatt notes, highlight his continued manipulation and cunning, traits that were likely honed under the guidance of his prison mentor.    Interestingly, despite the hundreds of recorded calls, Murdaugh never mentioned his late wife or son during his conversations, instead, he instructed his other son, Buster, to always put flowers on their graves.    Ultimately, Glatt's book offers a comprehensive and detailed account of the Murdaugh family saga, shedding light on new aspects of the story, including the surprising mentorship that Alex Murdaugh found behind bars.    "In summary, while the Murdaugh family may have appeared close and loving on paper, a hidden demon tore them apart," Glatt reflects. “I don't think there is any remorse at all,” he said. “During the trial, he always had a handkerchief totally at the ready to wipe his eyes when something gruesome or emotional came out. It was like he was playing to the jurors… He knows how to play the game in closing arguments and civil cases… He [thought] he could do that with this jury. And it rebounded on him... Of course, Alex has never admitted to killing them, and I'm sure he never will."    This riveting narrative, detailed in "Tangled Vines," showcases the Murdaugh family's journey from power to downfall, highlighting the unlikely relationship that helped Alex Murdaugh adapt to life behind bars. “... On this episode, we talk with bestselling true crime author John Glatt about his book “Tangled Vines Power,Privilege and the Murdaugh Family Murders.” The author did a masterful job reconstructing the rise of theprestigious Murdaugh family and the shocking double murder that led to the downfall of its patriarch, AlexMurdaugh.Among the lush, tree-lined waterways of South Carolina low country, the Murdaugh name means power. Acentury-old, multimillion-dollar law practice has catapulted the family into incredible wealth and localcelebrity―but it was an unimaginable tragedy that would thrust them into the national spotlight. On June 7th,2021, prominent attorney Alex Murdaugh discovered the bodies of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, on thegrounds of their thousand-acre hunting lodge. The mystery deepened only months later when Alex himselfwas discovered shot in the head on a local roadside. But as authorities scrambled for clues and the community reeled from the loss and media attention, darksecrets about this Southern legal dynasty came to light. The Murdaughs, it turned out, were feared as muchas they were loved. And they wouldn't hesitate to wield their influence to protect one of their own; two yearsbefore he was killed, a highly intoxicated Paul Murdaugh was at the helm of a boat when it crashed and killeda teenage girl, and his light treatment by police led to speculation that privilege had come into play. Asbombshells of financial fraud were revealed and more suspicious deaths were linked to the Murdaughs, a newportrait of Alex Murdaugh emerged: a desperate man on the brink of ruin who would do anything, even planhis own death, to save his family's reputation.

WWAR For JuneShow NotesAs we enter summer, we have two new books to suggest.Tracey reported on DOOMSDAY MOTHER by John Glatt (St. Martin's True Crime Press). In The Doomsday Mother, bestselling true crime author John Glatt tells the twisted tale of Lori Vallow, accused of having her two children murdered to start a new life with her new husband, doomsdayprepper Chad Daybell. At first, the residents of Kauai Beach Resort took little notice of their new neighbors. The glamorous blondeand her tall husband fit the image of the ritzy gated community. The couple seemed to keep tothemselves―until the police knocked on their door with a search warrant. Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell hadfled to Hawaii in the midst of being investigated for the disappearance of Lori's children back in Idaho―Tyleeand JJ―who hadn't been seen alive in five months. For years, Lori Vallow had been devoted to her children and her Mormon faith. But when her path crossedwith Chad Daybell, a religious zealot who taught his followers how to prepare for the end-times, thetumultuous relationship transformed her into someone unrecognizable. As authorities searched for Lori'schildren, they uncovered more suspicious deaths with links to both Lori and Chad, including the death of Lori'sthird and fourth husbands, her brother, and Chad's wife. In June 2020, the gruesome remains of JJ and Tyleewere discovered on Chad's property, and the newlyweds were arrested and charged with murder. And in ashocking development, horrifying statements revealed that the couple's fanatical beliefs had convinced themthe children had become zombies--a belief that may have led to their deaths.Bestselling author and journalist John Glatt takes readers deeper into the devastating story of Lori Vallow andChad Daybell in an attempt to unravel the lethal relationship of this doomsday couple.Ann reported on ROSSI'S GAMBLE by Paul Papa, one of the Dark and Stormy Family (STACGroupLLC)When Meyer Lansky makes you an offer, how can you refuse? It was a sunny day in January 2020, and on the shores of Kauai, a reporter approached Lori Vallow, the woman at the center of a nationwide manhunt. With her newlywed husband Chad Daybell by her side, Vallow was strolling towards the beachfront townhouse they had rented for $6,000 a month, just weeks after the death of Chad's wife, Tammy. The reporter, Nate Eaton of East Idaho News, asked the question on everyone's mind: "Did you do something to your children? Are your children still alive?" But Vallow was tight-lipped, simply responding with a cryptic "No comment." The reporter pressed on, reminding Vallow that her adopted son, 7-year-old Joshua "JJ" Vallow, and her 17-year-old daughter Tylee Ryan, had been missing for four months. He asked, "They've been missing for four months; you have nothing to say?" But Vallow remained silent, her only response a shrug of the shoulders. In the months that followed, JJ's biological grandparents had offered a $20,000 reward for information, and the story had become a national media blitz. But still, Vallow and Daybell remained silent, their beach getaway a mystery to the world. "There are people around the country praying for your children – praying for you guys – why don't you give us answers?" asked Eaton. To which Vallow simply replied, "That's great." The story of Lori Vallow and Chad Daybell is one of failed relationships, mysterious deaths, and the end of an American family. In "The Doomsday Mother: Lori Vallow, Chad Daybell, and the End of an American Family," true-crime author John Glatt traces Vallow's history, including her marriage to Daybell, a novelist and Doomsday prophet. The couple had eloped to Hawaii following the mysterious deaths of her husband and Chad's wife, and the disappearance of her two children. It was later revealed that the remains of JJ and Tylee were found in Daybell's backyard. Today, Vallow and Daybell are each charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. If convicted, they could face the death penalty, a rare outcome in the state of Idaho. They have both pleaded not guilty to the charges. Meanwhile, Vallow is also facing prosecution in Arizona for the conspiracy to commit first-degree murder of her then-husband, Charles Vallow. The trial was previously set for April 3, but has been delayed. In the end, the mystery of what happened to JJ and Tylee and the truth behind the deaths and disappearances of those close to Lori Vallow remains unsolved. 5. Eingewickelt in schwarze Müllsäcke. In this episode of the Monday Night Book Club, we will be continuing our reading of "The Family Next Door: The Heartbreaking Imprisonment of the Thirteen Turpin SIblings and Their Extraordinary Rescue" by the incomparable John Glatt. Specifically, this episode is going to cover the MANY more children that David and Louise had, as well as covering their move to Rio Vista, Texas. It's a boy! It's a girl! It's a nightmare! The Turpin family came to the attention of the police and public in 2018 as a severe case of child maltreatment. On January 14, a Turpin child escaped from the home of David and Louise Turpin in Perris, California and contacted police who then raided the house and found disturbing evidence of prolonged abuse and torturous living conditions. Given the number of dependents involved, 13 siblings, the degree of abuse and the protracted nature occurring over decades, the story garnered significant national and international interest in the press. Experts in family abuse considered the case to be "extraordinary" for a number of reasons. If this book is too heavy, let me know! I'm always open to suggestions as to what to read and when to read it. I only picked the book because I had it on hand, and it was the most accessible. If this is a case you're interested in doing a MEGA-DEEP dive on, then we can continue until we finish the whole damn thing! That's the beauty of this podcast world - it's up to us! In this episode of the Monday Night Book Club, we will be continuing our reading of "The Family Next Door: The Heartbreaking Imprisonment of the Thirteen Turpin SIblings and Their Extraordinary Rescue" by the incomparable John Glatt. We will be learning about David Turpin's life in school, Louise Robinette's family life as a child, and the eventual elopement of David and Louise. Boy, these guys suck! Well, look at what we have here! A bonus! A lot of people throughout my life have told me that I have a great reading voice, so I figured I would give something new a shot and start a little podcast Book Club! The first book I chose to read is a true-crime whirlwind, a book by the title of "The Family Next Door: The Heartbreaking Imprisonment of the Thirteen Turpin SIblings and Their Extraordinary Rescue" by investigative journalist John Glatt. If you've never heard of the Turpin abuse case, it is one of the most horrific cases of child abuse ever uncovered in the history of the United States. David and Louise are, decidedly, not very good people. If this book is too heavy, let me know! I'm always open to suggestions as to what to read and when to read it. I only picked the book because I had it on hand, and it was the most accessible. John Glatt's latest true crime book THE FAMILY NEXT DOOR tells the horrific story of the Turpin Family. On January 14, 2018, a seventeen-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings—ranging in age from 2 to 29—were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. “I’ve never been out,” she stammered. To their family, neighbors, and online friends, Louise and David Turpin presented a picture of domestic bliss: dressing their thirteen children in matching outfits and buying them expensive gifts. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history. For years, David and Louise had kept their children in increasing isolation, trapping them in a sinister world of torture, abuse, and near starvation. In the first major account of the case, investigative journalist and author John Glatt delves into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of the thirteen siblings in the face of unimaginable horror.
