Beer bars are one of the most important, and arguably underrated, elements of any thriving craft beer scene, and none have made an impact like Kitchener, ON's Arabella Park. Co-Owner Ben Metcalf joined Cee and Nate to talk about the famous big, blue wall at the bar, their approach to their menu, the value of farmhouse beers, the incredible approach True History takes with their beers, their relationship with Stillwell in Halifax, the impact of the bar in the local scene, promoting that Arabella now sells growler fills, Ben's impeccable tasting notes, the impact of opening up the country for beer sales, bar service vs table service, and an incredibly in-depth conversation about shaving and manscaping. They got into some phenomenal beers: Burdock Monday Micro Saison, True History Vienna Classic, True History Beisl Bier, Wood Brothers Elbows Up NEIPA, Bandit Fly Half NEIPA, and Counterpart Coffee Crisp Roller Oatmeal Stout. This was a gem - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Kitchener, ON is a tight-knit brewing scene, and one man has been a pillar of the community for around a decade now. Rob Hern launched Short Finger Brewing in 2019 after running a successful home brew shop out of the same space, and he jumped back on the pod after two years to catch Cee and Nate up. They touched on his love for his "bastard Gueuze", why he transitioned from a home brew shop to a brewery, his connection with Bebo from Third Moon, how he curates his taproom lineup, the full story behind Pulp (his legendary collab with the now-defunct Barncat Artisan Ales) and successful launch event, his Eisbock collab with the also now-defunct Half Hours On Earth, his relationship with Arabella Park, the story behind their flagship Lando, and they also talked about the Short Finger x BAOS collab for the BAOS 10th Anniversary this spring. They got into five killer beers - Lil' Sippy mixed fermentation session saison collab with Escarpment Labs, True Believer Pale Ale, Existential Risk golden sour aged in peach brandy barrels, Fresh Hell Helles Lager, and Lando (AI) variant, their neutral oak blended barrel-aged farmhouse "bastard" Gueuze. This was fantastic - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads

I decided to go for a walk this morning here in Kitchener, Ontario. A soundwalk.. Just because it's something to do; to be connected to a place. This is a settlement of course : a city. What I try to do is listen to sounds past, present, and future at the same time. How does one do that? It's mostly about feeling our way through what was here, and what I assume was forested lands. What is here now is mostly asphalt, brick houses and a few trees. In the future, one could hope that it would come back to a more natural state, in one way or another, but it might also just become what the planet is becoming, which is devastated by climate change and living with the consequences of tipping points that we will have passed. So listening in that sense is important to our everyday lives because it can inform us to understand the past, experience the present and anticipate the future. So what's happening here now? It's a very windy day. It's almost too much for this recorder. I'm just walking on the street, noticing as much as I can and feeling the wind on my skin, of course. You can hear that there are birds. It's February 26th, 2023, and there are all kinds of little things going on, rattling…The trees speak to us in their language and I am walking with you, listening. That's what a soundwalk is. Of course, the sound of cars are inevitable in the city and it's nice when they're spaced out like that because they can be quite beautiful, when they're not too numerous. Though the relationship of gas powered vehicles to the environment is an ongoing concern. I'm always on that edge between appreciating the beauty of something and realizing its origins such as the impact of the manufacturing and use of these devices. I try not to pass judgment. I try simply to be in this moment and when it occurs, then I just let that information inform my being in the world. My question is : how do you soundwalk?*This episode was recorded on February 26, 2023 in Kitchener Ontario. Yeliz a Coach, Player and School Teacher talks candidly and at length with me about a whole host of ideas and topics related around Gender groupings. Something I am always looking to get more ideas about and find out what a female coaches perspective is on gender groups. We talk about different ways of grouping, different ages and stages for gender based groups, how we can be more flexible to more players needs, the upsides and downsides of different approaches and also how we may approach each group differently and how we might want to treat them exactly the same.
This weeks guest is Alie Kudoba who is currently the head Bartender at The Bauer Kitchen in Waterloo, Ontario. Born and raised in Kitchener Ontario, Alie got her start in the industry as a barista at Second Cup while still in high school. It was Alie's first test of a fast paced customer service environment. At that point in time, Alie realized she enjoyed the challenge of making drinks beautifully but also with speed and efficiency. Alie eventually moved on to Molly Blooms in Kitchener, where she started serving and bartending. Alie worked with the greatest people at that little dive bar which included one of her very best friends still to this day. After two years at Molly Blooms, Molly and a couple of her friends moved out to Whistler, British Columbia together. At the time, Whistler would not hire anyone in the industry without a minimum of 3 years serving/bartending experience, so Alie settled for another barista job. During her time in Whistler, Alie met an Australian boy, and decided to move to his home town on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland Australia. While in Australia, Alie got a job working at a fine dining restaurant on the beach. Eventually, the Australian romance fizzled out, and Alie moved back to Whistler BC. Now that Alie finally had 3 years of serving and bartending experience, Alie was hired at Earls Whistler in the dead season of summer. However, her job did not start until September. Running low on funds, Alie reached out to her mom. Her mom's advice was to move back to Ontario and live at home and save up some money until Alie could go back out west on her own dime. Alie's plan was to work at The Bauer Kitchen in Waterloo for 6 months and then move back to Whistler. However, while working at The Bauer Kitchen, Alie met the love of her life. Being close to home and family and with a new romance, Alie decided to end her backpacking plans, and call Kitchener-Waterloo her home. Alie has now been working at The Bauer Kitchen for 8 years now. During the early stages of the covid lockdown, Alie has also started her own side hustle. Under the name “Alchemist Alie” - she started hosting online mixology courses through zoom, paired with cocktail kits and bar tools. From there, she gained private bartending gigs and is now venturing into bottled cocktails with a friend who owns The Grazing Table in KW. You can find Alie on instagram at @alchemist.alie. June 24th, 2021 - Hanover's, Jamie Warren, joins Jackie on-air to chat about his career, traveling Canada, songwriting, his brand new single "Cows and Corn" and more!"Jamie Warren is generally regarded as the most awarded independent country vocalist in Canada (Junos, CCMAs, OCMAs). Over his 35-year career he has released 54 singles, many of them hits. He's also known as a great songwriter and if you've ever seen him perform live, maybe a comedian!?Jamie lives in Kitchener Ontario, Canada, but was raised in Hanover Ontario where he pursued an adolescent dream of playing professional hockey in the NHL…with music as a background distraction. When he realized that his natural abilities for singing and playing guitar might make it easier to attract the attention of girls, he hung up his skates. Song writing was a logical progression for a sensitive guy who wrote poetry and short stories throughout his high school years. His interest in music was likely genetic since his mother sang and played piano and his father played guitar and mandolin. Jamie had piano lessons at age 5 and guitar lessons at age 8. By the time he was 10 years old it was tradition for the Warrens to entertain after Saturday night euchre games (a Canadian card-game institution) in their smoke-filled basement. His earliest musical influences were whatever his parents listened to on the radio and the only thing his parent's radio seemed to play, was country music. To this day he's still a huge fan of Merle Haggard, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline. Later in high school his best friend's older brother exposed him to celebrated vocal groups like The Eagles, America, Poco and CSNY. Jamie has always had an appreciation for Texas singer-songwriters like Radney Foster, Lyle Lovett and Rodney Crowell.Jamie attended Conestoga College to study Broadcasting. His goal was to become the youngest general manager of a mid-market radio station, but he emerged instead with a desire to sing for a living. What changed his mind? Jamie won a regional talent show at London Ontario's Western Fair which sent him to Memphis Tennessee for an international competition where he placed second. Jamie then stayed in Memphis, while he worked a one-year gig at Libertyland Theme Park as an entertainer. He still feels a connection to Memphis, the city that kicked off his career."For more visit: https://jamiewarren.com/home/

This is Part 2 of our 2 Part interview with Kypp Saunders - the host of this podcast! Kypp is currently co-owner of Sugar Run in Kitchener Ontario and the soon to be open Babylon Sisters in Waterloo, Ontario. Growing up in Kingston Ontario, Kypp started working in the Industry while still in high school. After finishing high school, Kypp moved to Waterloo Ontario to attend the University of Waterloo. It was at this time that Kypp started working at the Bombshelter Pub - one of the on-campus bars at the University. Upon graduation Kypp worked at a number of spots for several short stints before finding himself a home at Ethel's Lounge in Waterloo. Kypp spent a total of roughly a decade and a half working at Ethels in two separate stints. Several years in to his first run at Ethels, Kypp decided he wanted to try the day job life and left Ethels to work at telecommunications provider Rogers. It was while working at Rogers that Kypp realized that working in the industry was the career choice for him. He subsequently left Rogers and returned to working at Ethel's once again. Eventually, Kypp decided that he wanted to move in to the ownership side of the industry, and together with a business partner, opened up White Rabbit in Waterloo. Several years later, Kypp exited from White Rabbit ownership, and moved on to a new venture in downtown Kitchener - Sugar Run - a speak easy themed bar. Kypp is currently in the process of opening up a wine bar in uptown Waterloo in Summer 2021 named Babylon Sisters. Links: @sugarrunbar @babylonsistersbar Podcast Artwork by Zak Hannah @zak.hannah

Forest UnderSound is an invitation to consider the sentience of fungi. Sentience is the ability to perceive one’s environment, and experience sensations such as pain and suffering, or pleasure and comfort. Many countries acknowledge animal sentience, and animal’s ability to experience pain, fear, distress, hunger, and thirst, in their laws, which are designed to protect animals from such suffering. In 1997, the European Union agreed to recognize animals as sentient beings under European law. Animals and fungi share a common ancestor and branched away from plants at some point aproximately 1.1 billion years ago. It was only later that animals and fungi separated on the genealogical tree of life, making fungi more closely related to humans than plants. For Forest UnderSound, mycelium from Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi/Lingzhi) and Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushrooms), along with mycorrhizal fungi growing and connecting within the roots of various plants has been cultivated. Both the plant roots and mycelium have electrodes connected to them that send biodata into purpose-built circuits, which detect micro-fluctuations in conductivity between 1,000-100,000 of a second. This biodata is then translated in realtime to control analog and digital synthesizers. Empirically, when fully connected and music is being generated, Mycelium consistently generates periodic patterns that are both enigmatic but also very musical. For reasons that I do not fully understand, Mycelium reacts to the proximity of some people more than others. Growing more frenetic or more harmonic or completely silent, when humans are present. For the first iteration of Forest UnderSound fungi and plants will be allowed to grow over approximately 7 months, creating a real-time fungi forest soundscape. The soundscape will change over the seasons as the fungi and plants grow. During the 2021 Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall this soundscape will be recorded. Recordings take place on each of the 4 equinoxes. With support from: The Ontario Arts Council • A Space Gallery, Toronto • The Museum, Kitchener Ontario

Tune in for this discussion on the new and exciting developments in clinical pharmacology and geriatric psychiatry. We’re all aging, and everyone’s talking about it! Key Takeaways [:40] Jenna introduces today’s guests, Drs. Joanne Ho and Sophiya Benjamin. Dr. Ho talks about what brought her to the Geriatrics field and how she and Dr. Benjamin met as well as how and why they started with GeriMedRisk. [7:50] Because of the interdisciplinary nature of GeriMedRisk, a typical week will look different depending on your specialty. Dr. Benjamin shares what the consultation process looks like. [11:31] Dr. Ho shares her clinical-pharmacologist perspective on the type of day GeriMedRisk implies. She also touches on their weekly practice of a pharmacological review of a medication as it applies to older adults, which enables the teams to stay at the forefront of pharmacological learning. [14:23] The educational initiatives put forth by GeriMedRisk began with a needs assessment which highlighted a pressing demand for high-quality, evidence-based, bias-free information about how to prescribe safely to older adults. Dr. Ho also speaks to the other initiatives, including training graduate physicians. [20:40] Medications can be quite complex and Dr. Jennifer Tung — co-founder and team member at GeriMedRisk — came up with the idea of infographics! [23:03] How has COVID-19 impacted online platforms? Dr. Benjamin talks about how the pandemic has underscored the existing inequities in terms of access to specialists and the way GeriMedRisk was already trying to palliate this issue from the onset. [27:44] Dr. Ho touches on the greater risks of complications from COVID-19 in older adults and the information gathering work GeriMedRisks has been doing to minimize the adverse effects of certain medications in the context of pandemic prescribing. [33:01] Dr. Benjamin talks about how the pandemic has impacted the GeriMedRisks team and processes as well as their thoughts on expansion, especially in long-term care where the need is pressing. In this episode I have a conversation with Dr. Kim Bretz ND, a gut-focused Naturopathic Doctor with a real focus on evidence based outcomes for women with IBS. It’s common for women with IBS to either self-pigeon-hole their diet into very few foods, or to be led down a path of continuous restriction with their practitioner. But is this what the evidence suggests we should do? Kim sets us straight in this episode. Dr. Kim Bretz ND practices in Kitchener Ontario and can be contacted here.

This week I talk with Marat Szelest. Marta is a Polish Canadian Gym owner based in Kitchener Ontario. Marta only turned up in the Bounceagogo social feeds recently promoting all that she does in and around her gym. What has been clear from the start is the emphasis that Marta places of Head first Body second approach and that how we feel about and see ourselves is at least equally, if not more important than working on the body alone. We talk about how she came to make this realisation, her business in general and how that sits within a political context on both side of the Atlantic (for both of us). I really enjoyed meeting and speaking with Marta and really looking forward to seeing how she and her business develops over the next 6 months and beyond. You can catch Marta on Instagram, Facebook and on her website and if you do speak to her, tell her to get podcast started soon!!

His second in two months. Stress is a suspected cause of shingles outbreaks and Mike tells everyone the key to treatment is starting on a drug regimen within 72 hours after the outbreak. He missed that deadline and is now waiting for it to go away. He was keeping this all quiet but those who see him in Indianapolis will still see the sores, so he decided to come clean. [spp-timestamp time="11:17"] Well, listener Tom called in this great tip about a new service from the United States Postal Service - USPS Informed Delivery . Once there, you first enter in your zip code to see if it's available in your area. Most of the country is included. Mike and I just signed up thanks to Tom's tip. The service allows customers to track incoming mail through an online dashboard and/or a daily email. Enrolled customers are able to see scanned images of the outside of their letters the morning before they are delivered to their physical mailbox. Again, while the Informed Delivery product is available for most addresses, it is not available for all. A few of you may need to be patient a bit as the program is rolled out. Meantime, be sure to send me your tips and suggestions for the RV lifestyle. You can use the “Leave Voicemail” link at Roadtreking.com. Just click it and then use the built-in microphone on your computer or mobile devise to record a message to me. You can do it over as many times as you want, until you are satisfied. And then you just click a button and it comes right to my email inbox. I love hearing from you! Jennifer's tip of the week is brought to you by RadPower Bikes ,an electric bike manufacturer offering direct to consumer pricing on powerful premium electric bikes.
