In today's Daily Trudge, I'm talking about “Self Love vs. Love of Self.” There's a big difference between loving yourself and being full of yourself. True self-love is about acceptance, humility, and care. “Love of self” is when ego starts calling the shots again. In this episode, I'll unpack how recovery helps us find that healthy middle ground — where we treat ourselves with respect, not arrogance; where confidence grows from gratitude, not grandiosity. You can love yourself without worshipping yourself.

Transcript The Lord doesn't love, the Lord IS love. So what love does is that it has to bring into being what is other than itself. In order for love to exist, there has to be two. But the Lord can't bring into being a being that is Divine like Himself, because that would be loving Himself. So what the Lord brings into being is what is other than Himself. Now if you define Divinity, Divinity is to have life in oneself. That's what Divinity is. To be the source of life itself. To not be Divine, is to be a receiver of life. So everything that is created is not the Lord, it is a receiver of the Lord's life. Now in order to have a reciprocal relationship, that life has to be received by the creature, or what is created, in a way whereby it feels it to be its own. So the feeling has to be there that I am a self. But the understanding is that that feeling is a product of the Lord's in flowing life. It's not something sourced in myself, although by all appearances it does. Then you have the conditions for reciprocity, which is what love is. It's communion and connection. So that's the only way the Divine Being as love, can have love manifest as if there is another being that for all intents of purposes operates as if it is Divine but knows that it's not. And the more that you know that you don't have life in yourself, then the more infilling there is from the Divine and the more fully you feel alive. So there's kind of a paradox that sits in there. Now from our perspective, where we believe we have life in ourselves, it all looks like - My goodness, if I have to give this up then I am nothing! And so you spiral into - What is it all about? Well what the Word says is that every human being that comes into being has come into being through a need within the Grand Man to fulfill a use in the whole of the community, a unique use that only that being can fulfill. And so that's what's behind human beings being born, is that they're being born for heaven to infill these uses in this community of heaven. So an example is like when you are in a use that you love, you give no thought to yourself. Like your sense of self just doesn't exist in that time stands still, or time doesn't exist either. You're fully in the joy of what you're doing and it's not self referencing. Well that's angelic consciousness, and angels do not self reference but they're more fully alive and feel the life in the joy and the purpose and the meaning of being itself because they don't have that belief in oneself getting in the way and obscuring the Lord's life. So the Lord's desire is to give all that He is to another. That's what love does, and love can't do anything else but that, because the Lord is the fullness of all we can imagine from a perspective of happiness and joy and meaning and purpose. The more we can receive of Him, the greater our sense of meaning, happiness, joy and purpose is. So the other aspect to it is that what we can say is that that life is nothing like how we experience life at this particular point in our development. So we struggle to see what joy and happiness is without self referencing whereas it's actually true joy, true peace. True love is when the self is no longer something that's looking to take for itself what it wants or what it believes will make it happy because humility, happiness, joy, all of these things arise when the self is put off. That's what we become and that's what heaven is. So all there is, is as of self. There is no self other than the Lord. The Lord is the only Self. So just by extension, there can only be as of self and all sense of me being a self falls into the realm of falsity. So we are receivers of the Lord's life. We don't have life in our self and by definition only that which has life in itself is a self. So the Lord is the only self. The struggle we have is around trying to live out of an as of self as opposed to out of my-self. Well,

Arcana Coelestia 5664. [2] It is known in the church that truth is instilled and given by the Lord; for it is taught that faith is not from man but from God; thus not only confidence, but also the truths of faith are from Him. Still it appears as if the truths of faith were procured by the man, for he is profoundly ignorant that they flow in, because he does not perceive it. The reason why he does not perceive it is that his interiors are closed, so that he cannot have perceptible communication with spirits and angels; and when the interiors are closed the man can know nothing whatever about influx. [3] Be it known, however, that it is one thing to know the truths of faith, and quite another to believe them. They who merely know the truths of faith, charge their memory with them just as they do with the facts of any other branch of knowledge. These truths man can procure for himself without such an influx, but they have no life, as is plain from the fact that an evil man, even the worst, can know the truths of faith just as much as an upright and pious man. But as before said with the evil these truths have no life; for when an evil man brings them forth he regards in everyone of them either self-glory or gain; so that it is the love of self and of the world that inflates them and makes a sort of life; but it is such life as there is in hell, which is called spiritual death. Hence it is that when he brings them forth, he brings them forth from the memory, and not from the heart, whereas he who believes the truths of faith brings them forth from the heart at the same time as from the lips; for with him the truths of faith are so deeply rooted in as to have their root in the outer memory, and to grow from there toward what is interior or higher, like fruit-bearing trees; and like trees they deck themselves with leaves, and at last with blossoms, for the sake of the end of bearing fruit. So it is with such a man. [4] He also aims at nothing else through the truths of faith than uses, which are the practices of charity, which to him are the fruits. These are the truths which man cannot procure for himself, even in the smallest degree; but they are gratuitously bestowed on him by the Lord, and this in every moment of his life, nay, if he will believe it, without number in every moment. But as man is of such a nature as to have no perception of their flowing in, for as before said if he had the perception he would resist, because he would believe that he would then lose his own, and with his own his freedom, and with his freedom his delight, and would thus become a thing of nought, it is therefore brought about that man does not know but that he procures truths of himself. This then is what is meant by saying that it will seem as truth procured by them. Moreover, in order that a heavenly own and heavenly freedom may be bestowed on man, he must needs do good as of himself and think what is true as of himself; but when he reflects he should acknowledge that these are from the Lord (see n. 2882, 2883, 2891). Doctrine of Sacred Scripture 40. The truths of the sense of the letter of the Word are in part not naked truths, but appearances of truth, and are as it were likenesses and comparisons taken from things such as exist in nature, and thus accommodated and adapted to the apprehension of the simple and of little children. But being correspondences they are receptacles and abodes of genuine truth; and are like enclosing and containing vessels, as a crystal cup encloses noble wine, and as a silver plate holds palatable food. They are also like garments which clothe, as swathings do an infant, and a pretty dress a maiden. They are also like the memory-knowledges [scientifica] of the natural man which contain within them perceptions and affections of truth of the spiritual man. The naked truths themselves which are enclosed, held, clothed, and contained, are in the spiritual sense of the Word; and the naked goods are in its cel...

Arcana Coelestia 7398. Only in the river shall they be left. That this signifies that they should remain with the falsities where these are, is evident from the signification of “river,” here the river of Egypt, as being falsity (see n. 6693, 7307); and from the signification of “being left,” as being to remain. With this the case is that whatever enters with man, remains with him, especially what is received from affection. It is believed that the things which enter have been completely obliterated and cast out when the man no longer remembers them; but they have not been obliterated or cast out, but they stick fast either in the interior memory, or in the exterior, among things which have become familiar. For the things which become familiar, are as it were natural, which flow of their own accord, and are not excited by a conscious recalling from the memory; like man's speech, the words of which flow spontaneously from thought, as also do the gestures and actions, and even the steps; and also the thought. These enter successively from infancy, and in time become familiar, and then flow spontaneously. From these as well as from other similar facts, it is evident that all things which enter with man, remain, and that the things which have become habitual, that is, familiar, are no longer noticed as being in the man, although they are in him. Such is the case with the falsities and evils that enter with man, and also with the truths and goods. Such are the things that form him and determine his quality. (That all things which a man has seen, heard, thought, spoken, and done, have been inscribed on him, (see n. 2474-2489.) From all this it is now evident how it is to be understood that the reasonings would remain with the falsities where these are; for after falsities are being removed, they are allotted their places elsewhere in the natural, and together with the falsities the endeavor and cupidity of reasoning; but not as before in the midst directly under the mind's view. Hence it is that, as related in what follows, the frogs were gathered together in heaps, and the land stank by reason of them, whereby is signified that these reasoning falsities were arranged in bundles in the natural, and there was what was foul and loathsome therefrom (see below, n. 7408, 7409). AC 7370. That man is in the love of self who despises his neighbor in comparison with himself, who regards him as his enemy if he does not favor and reverence him; he is still more in the love of self who therefore hates and persecutes his neighbor; and he still more who therefore burns with revenge against him and desires his destruction. Such persons at last love to rage against their neighbor; and the same, if they are also adulterers, become cruel. Third Round posts are short audio clips taken from Round 3 comments offered in the online Logopraxis Life Group meetings. The aim is to keep the focus on understanding the Text in terms of its application to the inner life along with reinforcing any key LP principles that have been highlighted in the exchanges.

We begin today a stewardship series, which often in church translates into raising money, which is an unfortunate mischaracterization. Steward is one of the most important words in the Bible that describes our primary identity as human beings. The word steward means manager. God calls us to manage all that God gives us.   We see this in the first chapter of the Bible…“So God created human beings…blessed them, and said, “Have many children, so that your descendants will live all over the earth and bring it under their control. I am putting you in charge…” (Genesis 1:27-28 GNT) This doesn't mean we can run the earth the way we want. It means we are given the responsibility to manage creation the way God wants. We are called to steward everything God gives us.   But here's the paradox about stewardship. You don't have to be a person of faith to be a steward. Regardless of our faith or lack of faith in God, we all have resources in life to manage. We have our bodies, our souls, our minds, our relationships, our possessions, our potential, and more. Whatever we think about God, we are managing what we have. We make decisions everyday about the way we want to manage and use what we are given in this life. And the way we manage our resources says everything about what we value and believe about life.   See sermon notes and more at stlukesumc.com/sermons Subscribe to receive our latest messages: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQ2n... What's the value?
"Love of self" - Denise Drinkwalter

"Isn't it a beautiful thing that we get the chance to do more work to become better people?" This was the quote and the sentiment that stuck with me most from my discussion with Denise. We spent much of our conversation talking about how hard it is to truly know and love yourself, how fear and judgement can paralyze us, and how painful it can be to accept the truth about ourselves; and Denise's view on it all was: isn't it beautiful? Isn't it beautiful that we have the ability to view all of these things not as unbearable, overwhelming work; but rather as opportunities to learn and grow? She wasn't in anyway dismissing how hard and ugly the world can be at times, but in spite of all of it she still firmly believes that finding a way to love yourself is the most powerful answer to all of these issues. As a way of background, Denise was an educator for 31 years (working with many emotionally and developmentally challenged children) and is now an an experienced Empowerment Life Coach and who has worked with hundreds of clients taking them from being hollow, overwhelmed and lost to finding purpose in their lives. As she explained, it was her time as an educator where she had to find ways to understand, connect, and guide children through their own challenges with ego, insecurity, fear, and self hate; that equipped her for the job she has today. What I loved about this conversation, was that we literally followed the thread of "loving your self" from the beginning and probed, explored, and questioned it all as we worked our way through it. We talked about using nature to help learn about ourselves, how to separate the external noise from your true voice, and the importance of trial and error. Along the way we also asked some philosophical questions like; should we blindly love ourselves no matter what, how do you remove the external noise but not become self centered, and does love of self really help in the most dire of circumstances? This was a really fun and wisdom packed episode, so much thanks to Denise for being on and sharing her perspectives on life.
