As we noted last week, highlights of Floodlandia's Decembers are holiday visits with Charlie Bowen's cousin Kathy Castner, who usually can be persuaded each time to sit in with the band for a special night.Jam sessions with Kathy are always chances to revisit favorite old tunes, like “Loving Arms” and “The Rose,” but they also can be opportunities to explore some new material too.For years now Kathy and Charlie have been doing a duet on Graham Nash's classic song “Our House,” but it was last week during Kathy's Christmas 2023 trek from her Cincinnati area home to Huntington that the band also got in on the fun. Moreover, we're fortunate that our manager/videographer Pamela Bowen had the camera rolling to catch that moment for the video above.About the SongNash wrote “Out House” in time to record it with his band mates on the 1970 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young Déjà Vu album. Hitting No. 30 as a single on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, the song — which has been characterized as an ode to the 1970s' counter-cultural domestic bliss — was written while Nash was living with singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell.Graham had come from England to America in 1969 and was staying with Crosby, who threw a party to welcome him to Los Angeles. Mitchell, whom Graham had met earlier when he was still playing with The Hollies, came to the do.“After that party, I went home with Joni,” Graham said, “and spent a couple of years with her in her home in Laurel Canyon.”Capturing the MomentAbout the song's creation Graham said, “One day Joan and I got up and went to breakfast at a delicatessen on Ventura Boulevard, and a few doors away there was a little antique store. In the window she saw this vase, went inside, fell in love with it, bought it and brought it back to the house.“It was a kind of a cold gray morning as it sometimes can be in Los Angeles, and I said, ‘Why don't I light the fire and you put some flowers in the vase that you just bought.'”Bingo!“My and Joan's lives at the time were far from ordinary,” Nash said, “and I thought, ‘What an ordinary moment.' Here I am lighting the fire for my old lady and she's putting flowers in this vase that she just bought. And I sat down at her piano and an hour later, ‘Our House' was written.”Going ForwardThe song has been covered by other artists — Helen Reddy and Sheena Easton come to mind — but curiously, Nash has said he "was bored with 'Our House' the day after we recorded it,” though he still plays it occasionally "because it does mean so much to so many people.”Notably, in March 2019 Nash performs the song on the album Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration, the recording of a tribute concert by various artists to observe Mitchell's 75th birthday. Musician/entrepreneur Dave Ullrich is someone whose independent spirit and DIY talents have forged him a fruitful and fascinating career in and around music and the arts. Dave started the much-loved indie rock duo The Inbreds with his high school friend Mike O'Neill (Trailer Park Boys, Tuns). Much revered for their originality and minimalist approach, the Inbreds became Canadian indie rock favourites in the 90s.The band's popularity grew even more, after being asked to join the Tragically Hip's legendary Another Roadside Attraction tour in 1995. Later, they were also invited by Dave Grohl to open for the Foo Fighters on tour - an invitation that they famously turned down. Their 1994 album Kombinator was nominated for a Juno Award (Best Alternative Album), and a Much Music Video Award (for the song "Any Sense of Time").After the Inbreds' breakup, Ullrich went on to start the online music store and label Zunior, and produce two indie music festivals in Prince Edward County: Sandbanks Music Festival and County Pop. From his time in The County sprung another enterprise - his craft lemonade business, called Lemonade Dave. And as if that's not enough, he's now joined the ranks of the podcaster realm. Check out his wonderful podcast Salad Days for some great and insightful conversations with Canadian musicians. Dave possesses a true gift for storytelling, and in this 2-parter conversation, you'll hear his enlightened perspectives on music, life and—of course—lemonade. DARDEN SMITH Open and empty. That's how Darden Smith describes the west Texas landscape that inspired his wildly creative new multi-media project, Western Skies. Comprising a new studio record, a book of photography, lyrics, and essays, and an accompanying album of readings set to music, the collection is an immersive journey through a world both real and imagined, a place of mystery and mythology, possibility and longing. Like his photographs, Smith's writing is steeped in isolation, though rarely lonely; timeless, yet acutely aware of the hours and minutes whizzing by like mileposts on the highway. The songs on Western Skies are spare and deliberate, often marked by a distinct sense of motion and transience, and the performances are similarly raw and intimate, reflecting the desolate beauty of the region that so captured Smith's imagination as he crisscrossed it time and again throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.Over the course of his remarkable three-and-a-half decade career, Smith has released 15 critically lauded studio albums, landed singles on both the country and pop charts (including the Top 10 hit “Loving Arms”), penned a symphony, scored works for theater and dance, published a widely celebrated book on creativity, exhibited works of visual art, and co-founded the non-profit SongwritingWith:Soldiers program, which pairs veterans with musicians in order to tap into the transformational possibilities of collaborative songwriting. (During the pandemic, the Austin-based artist also helped launch Frontline Songs, which connected musicians and healthcare workers to support them in telling their stories and healing their trauma.) The Daily News hailed Smith as “one of the most respected American musicians working today,” while the Austin Chronicle dubbed him a “master song craftsman,” and AllMusic called him “a singer-songwriter blessed with an uncommon degree of intelligence, depth, and compassion.”

“We often shoot off panicked prayers, frenzied, striving and scared. How can we be still? Stop. For a minute or for a few. Stop what you're doing. Stop the noise. Disconnect from devices. Take deep breaths. Go outside to breathe fresh air. Shake out the panic, or walk or run. Gently sway, rocking, calming yourself. Gaze at something beautiful: light and shadow, tree, bird, or you own hand. Pray your desire: 'Let me be still, and know that you are God.'” Br. Luke Ditewig reminds us that we were created for stillness.
Acclaimed New Zealand writer Witi Ihimaera launched his memoir Native Son at Going West in 2019. He gave a powerful and emotional reading from the book, with sonic accompaniment by the multi-instrumentalist Kingsley Spargo. At Going West, we were extremely honoured to host the launch, for what was the second installment of Ihimaera's planned three-part memoir. To mark the occasion, he read an evocative passage drawing on ancient Māori legend and wrestling with the trauma of his teen years. Musical polymath Kingsley Spargo provided a rich, multi-layered soundscape to accompany the reading, with diverse techniques on both taonga puoro and orchestral instruments, mixed with innovative use of digital processing. The session was introduced by Harriet Allan from Penguin Random House. Witi Ihimaera is of Te Whānau a Kai, Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Rongowhakaata, Tūhoe, Te Whānau ā Apanui and Ngāti Porou descent. He was the first Māori to publish a novel, Tangi, in 1973. He has subsequently gone on to become one of New Zealand's leading writers. He is passionate about writing Māori stories and creating opportunities for them to be shown not only in print but also in theatre and on film. The first installment of his memoir, Māori Boy, won the 2016 Ockham Award for the best non-fiction work. His play, All Our Sons, won six Wellington theatre awards. He is currently writing the third volume of his memoir.
Label: MCA 40100 djYear: 1973Condition: MPrice: $12.00Stereo/Mono promo copy. This is one of the most sublime recordings to come out of 1973. It's a song that everyone knows, but which has never been a huge hit for anyone. A few Country artists did fine covers — in particular, Sammi Smith's 1977 version — and if you do a search in iTunes, you'll find umteen covers by folks like the Dixie Chicks, Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson & Rita Coolidge, Kenny Rogers, Millie Jackson, and Irma Thomas. But frankly, this one beats 'em all, except perhaps for Sammi Smith's (he says, hedging). BTW, the jukebox "snippet" presents the second half of this powerful performance... just because I had to pick one half or the other. :-) Note: This beautiful promo 45 comes in a vintage MCA Records factory sleeve. It has no notable flaws, grading Mint across the board (Labels, Vinyl, Audio). (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)

TCBCast Now is our once-a-month general pop culture spin-off available exclusively for Patreon supporters at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Going forward, we will be releasing short 5-10 minute teasers of our Patreon-exclusive material on the main feed. On this episode of TCBCast Now originally released in early April, Justin finally watches Gurdip's favorite movie of all time: 1975's JAWS, directed by Steven Spielberg himself. While Justin provides his reactions to the film, Gurdip provides all sorts of neat trivia about the making of the film. The guys also briefly touch on their reactions to Zack Snyder's Justice League, the use of Elvis' "Loving Arms" in Godzilla vs Kong, Gurdip reports in on Falcon & The Winter Soldier and Justin fill in on three games he's finished in the past month, as well as a new one I started, Disco Elysium. For Song of the Week(/Month?), Gurdip confesses he always feels like "Somebody's Watching Me" and picks a 1984 Rockwell classic. Meanwhile, Justin's got a first-class, one-way ticket to the 1999 Weird Al Yankovic comedy-rock epic, "Albuquerque."

Jesus says, For those poor frightened souls ashamed of their lifestyles tell them that I am forgiving, all merciful and will welcome them into My open and Loving Arms. All they have to do is walk towards Me and ask me to help them. I will never turn away from the pleas of sinners, no matter how dark their sin. I forgive all of those who are truly remorseful for any previous offence they have committed.
