Episode 14 of Fragile Juggernaut is the first of our trio of regional episodes. It dials into New York City, the seat of the country's largest manufacturing base, but one composed of a vast constellation of small and diverse shops; and also host to the nation's largest port, transport system, white collar and cultural complex, and more. With the eminent historian Joshua Freeman, Gabe and Ben talk about worker organizing outside the CIO cast–public transit workers, teachers, laundry workers and domestics–as well as what made New York City, a non-fordist city in the age of Ford, so exemplary compared to other parts of the country. The episode features James Baldwin and Truman Capote; Irish dance halls and cruising on the piers; burial societies, Tammany Hall, and clandestine organizations; the origins of bodegas and how the mob got rackets into organized labor; the trade union origins of “Strange Fruit”; Ella Baker and Esther Cooper Jackson; the IRA and Broadway musicals; how transit workers built their union campaigning against big squeegees; the hybrid combinations of craft and industrial unionism; and the limits to workplace organization in a city defined by tremendous ethnic, religious, and neighborhood segmentation. Featured music: “I Ain't Got Nobody” by Count Basie; “It's Better With A Union Man” by Pins and Needles Orchestra; “Strange Fruit” by Billie Holiday; “The Boys of the Lough” by Michael Coleman; “Talking Sailor” by Woody Guthrie; “One Big Union for Two” by the Pins and Needles Orchestra; “New York Town” by Woody Guthrie.Archival audio credits: Esther Cooper Jackson discusses domestic work research; Mike Quill debates Rep. Fred Hartley on ABC news; longshoreman and sailor Stan Weir describes conservatizing effects of the racket on the docks. Everything Will Be Alright in the End Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine Two songs into Everything Will Be Alright in the End, Rivers Cuomo sings "we belong in the rock world," a repudiation of the big beat experimentation of Raditude, a 2009 record that found Weezer working with such pop producers as Dr. Luke and Butch Walker. Weezer fans eager for Pinkerton, Pt. 2 are often quick to bristle at Cuomo's experimentations, so when the guitarist sings that they're "rockin' out like it's '94," he's not only not lying -- they went so far as to once again hire Ric Ocasek, the producer of the group's debut, to helm this ninth studio album -- but he's reassuring his audience that he's left all those pounding dance beats behind. The weird thing is, Weezer already shook off the ghost of Raditude via 2010's quickly released indie Hurley, so the emphasis on the group returning to rock feels a little odd, but Everything Will Be Alright in the End does trump its immediate predecessor by being bigger, bolder, slicker, and stickier than Hurley. Some of this is indeed due to the presence of Ocasek. His exacting production, anchored as much in pummeling arena rock as new wave pop, polishes and preserves Cuomo's quirks, but it's also true that Rivers has decided to indulge in his eccentricities once again. Take away the woolly mammoth-sized guitars and "Back to the Shack," with its overt references to "In the Garage," and Everything Will Be Alright in the End doesn't feel especially like early Weezer, not with the dexterous syncopation of "I've Had It Up to Here" providing a midpoint palate-cleanser and a neo-prog rock suite concluding the proceedings. By having the record follow these twisty detours, Cuomo provides a counterpoint to the classicist pop Weezer pursue elsewhere, but even such succinct, sculpted pop as "The British Are Coming," "Ain't Got Nobody," "Cleopatra," and "Go Away" (the latter a duet with Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino) never feels like a desperate scramble back home. Rather, a feeling of acceptance underpins Everything Will Be Alright in the End: there's a sense that Weezer made another record of massive, hooky rock not only because that's what the fans want but because they know it's what they do best. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

In our newest segment, one which reflects on our complete lack of judgement and discernment, we present LIVE SINGING, the segment that features various singers "singing" (yes, that word was intentionally placed within quotation marks!) some of your favorite songs! On today's show, the CHO Singing Group, featuring "Cannabis Carl", "Hicksville Harry", and "Operatic Olivier" came in to sing, "Just a Gigolo/Ain't Got Nobody"", by Louis Prima and David Lee Roth. As Al often says, what could POSSIBLY go wrong???
It's impossible to completely separate some areas of our lives from others. Are you good at compartmentalizing things? You know, not letting one thing or area of your life disrupt another area? It can be hard. I'm decent at it, but I'm far from world-class. Honestly, I worry a little bit about folks who can flip switches and just go about their business - either at home or work - as though everything is fine. Let me explain. Throughout my life I've encountered quite a few people - some professionally and some personally - who've had some pretty tragic things happen. As a people watcher and observer, I'm often fascinated and puzzled by the person who can suffer tragedy in one area of their life, but in another area act as though everything is fine. It's weird to me. That goes way beyond compartmentalizing something, but let's talk about that - compartmentalizing. When I compartmentalize something I'm able to not let that thing - something tragic, perhaps - not creep into a place where it doesn't belong. Let me give you two examples that may help you understand. The first example involves personal and work. I had what must have been a gall bladder attack over 10 years ago. It's the only time it's ever happened to me. We were at church and the afternoon service was about to begin. Suddenly, I got a sharp pain at the top of my stomach and began to feel sick. Not throw up sick, but breaking out into a cold sweat kind of sick. I told my wife I was going to go to the rest room and I got up. By the time I got to the back where the restrooms are located, I was feeling terrible. I went into the restroom shed my suit jacket, ripped off my tie and unbuttoned the top 3 buttons of my shirt. I was pouring sweat. No nausea or anything else...just this pain and profuse sweating. She rushed me to the ER. I couldn't keep my legs from pumping. The nurse asked me to describe the pain on a 10 point scale. I told her, "I don't know. A 3 or so." The ER nurse said, "Look at him he's writhing in pain. A three?" I remember thinking, "So this is what writhing is." Man, alive. I was sick as a dog. I wasn't in any kind of shape to answer a quiz, even if it was about how I was feeling. Fast forward a bit and they've given me enough pain medicine to knock down an elephant (at least that's what they told my wife). I'm very resistant to pain medication. I'm laying there, legs still pumping and my cell phone rang. My wife reports that I instantly answered it in my normal voice and carried on some brief conversation with the person calling, never telling them I was in the ER writhing in pain. See, I told you I know how to compartmentalize! Okay, you want a better example? Let's try a professional example. I've encountered many people issues. Sometimes leaders can see a single problem and assume there's something systemic going on. It's a pretty common response. I don't suffer that very much. Just because there's a problem with a person in one department doesn't mean there's a problem with everybody in the department. I once experienced a serious honesty breach with a manager. All the evidence pointed to the facts: a) he was guilty of this infraction, b) he was acting alone and c) he'd been doing it for much longer than I'd like to admit. I didn't have a hard time seeing it for what it was - an isolated act of betrayal by one employee. Weeks of quiet investigation didn't lead me to any other conclusions. In time, I handled the problem and terminated the employee. I know business people who would have easily thought this was a wider spread problem. I didn't because I had no evidence that it went beyond this one employee. That's what I mean by compartmentalizing. Why is that subject important? Because I'd like you to think about your life, your behavior. I've seen 3 basic types of people: 1) the people who compartmentalize with some magical switch where they can completely disconnect one area of life with other areas,
I'm goddamn sexy, and I know it. It's a new year, and I'm still finding it hooking up with a suitable type of man that can handle me in my bedroom. I don't know whether it's something I'm lacking, or there's just few credible men to be found in my neighbourhood, even when I'm online. What's a horny woman like me to do to get some sex in her life? Listen to my confession.

From “Thriller” to “Gangnam Style,” and everything in between, music videos have captured our hearts for several decades. This episode explores the early iterations that existed before the advent of MTV brought music videos into the mainstream and revolutionized it as an art form. With a unique combination of audio and visual stimuli, music videos continue to challenge the norm and launch new performers into stardom. In this music history episode of "Strong Reception," I am joined by two special guests as we dive into the rich history of the song "Just a Gigolo" and its unlikely sibling tune, "I Ain't Got Nobody."Fellow music nerd Philip Emeott and I walk through the surprisingly complex journey "Just a Gigolo" took from the dance halls of 1920s Vienna to the airwaves of 1980s MTV. We get into some of the greatest unsung tracks recorded in the 20th century, as well as some of the most cringeworthy. Later in the show, bestselling author Tom Clavin and I do a deep dive into Louis Prima's landmark 1956 version of the song. We discuss how the sound and style of that recording represented a true innovation for its time. Tom and I also talk about the underappreciated talents of two of Prima's key musical partners: his wife and fellow vocalist Keely Smith, and his arranger and sax player Sam Butera. Hosted on Acast. Our worst nightmare. The New York Yankees, who needed a fucking starting pitcher got absolutely NOBODY at the trade deadline. If you're optimistic about this, you're dead to us. Now what? What the hell are they going to do now? This is a go for it all type of season and Brian Cashman might have just screwed it all up. Also, Tommy almost gets strangled by Hubbs as the tension in the office couldn't be any higher between the Yankees universe. All this and more on the latest edition of The Short Porch. WHERE BREAKTHROUGH BEGINS! - My Adventure Series. 03.12.17 Do You Need God To Do Something In Your Life? JOHN 5 1Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3In these lay a multitude of those who were sick, blind, lame, and withered, [waiting for the moving of the waters; 4for an angel of the Lord went down at certain seasons into the pool, and stirred up the water; whoever then first, after the stirring up of the water, stepped in was made well from whatever disease with which he was afflicted.] 5And a certain man was there, who had been thirty-eight years in his sickness. 6When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he had already been a long time in that condition, He said to him, “Do you wish to get well?” “Waiting On The World To Change.” The First One In Would Win. That’s The Way Religion Works. You Don’t Have To Be First. The More Desperate The Situation The Greater The Opportunity For A Miracle. “I Ain’t Got Nobody.” Faith Has The Ability To Override The Facts. John 4 - You Don’t Need A Bucket When You’re The Well. You Don’t Have To Come To The Water. The Water Came To You “B.Y.O.B.” Bring Your Own Breakthrough. Breakthrough Doesn’t Change The Situation. Breakthrough Changes You. What If The Only Thing Blocking Your Breakthrough Is Your Willingness To Believe That Breakthrough Is Possible. 8Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. “Bunker-Buster Bombs” Breakthrough Begins Where My Excuses End. While You’re Waiting For God To Come Down, God Is Waiting On You To Get Up. Breakthrough Begins Where You PICK UP YOUR MAT.

Opening is a little choppy before Don and Jack tease each other about recent New Year's Eve celebrations. Mary and Frank Parker tell about their celebrations with an interuption by a man wanting to sell a bulldog. The bulldog gag, of course runs through the show. Don Besser plays, but it is chopped. Jack introduces the play. Frank sings, but it also is snipped. The play begins. A spoof of the famous story. Jack is arrested, and tossed into a French prison. The audio gets a little choppy and skippyu again. Don's song is snipped, then Jack finds himself still in prison years later. Even the old joke about "hair," from previous episodes shows up. Jack makes his escape with the help of... Schlepperman? Bonus Tracks: Cab Calloway. 1935. I Ain't Got Nobody. Graham MacNamee. 1940. Interview with Voice Actor, Charlie Cantor
