This is the progress powering tomorrow. Allen Hall: Welcome to the Uptime Wind Energy Podcast. I'm your host, Allen Hall, joined by my co host, Joel Saxum. Today, we're honored to have with us Jonathan Cole, a visionary leader in the global offshore wind industry. and a key figure driving the transition to sustainable energy. Jonathan is the CEO of Corio Generation, a global offshore wind powerhouse, launched in April of 2022. As a portfolio manager of Macquarie Asset Management operating independently, Corio has quickly established itself as a major player in the renewable energy sector. Under Jonathan's leadership, Corio has amassed one of the world's largest offshore wind development portfolios, boasting over 30 gigawatts of projects in various stages of development across Europe, Asia Pacific, and the Americas. Jonathan's influence extends far beyond his role at Corio. He currently serves as the chairman of the Global Wind Energy Council, GWEC. and his industry expertise has been recognized through numerous leadership positions. These include chairing the Global Offshore Wind Health and Safety Organization, the UK's Offshore Wind Program Board, and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapults Industry Advisory Group. He has also been a board member of Renewable UK and a member of the UK's Offshore Wind Industry Council. Before joining Corio, Jonathan played a pivotal role in shaping the offshore wind landscape at eBird DLA from 2010 to 2021, he spearheaded the creation and growth of Ebert Della's offshore wind business, transforming it into a market leader with approximately 14 billion Euros invested a project pipeline exceeding 30 gigawatts, and a team of 800 professionals spanning four continents and 11 countries. Jonathan's a very busy person and we appreciate his time. Jonathan, welcome to the program. Great to be here with you. You've been a busy person. I've been watching your LinkedIn account in all the countries and continents you've been on over the last couple of months. You're busy in offshore wind and you were just in New York for the climate week. What was some of the outcome from those sessions that you attended? Jonathan Cole: Yeah, it's a busy time for offshore wind and busy time for me, particularly. And I was in New York last week really with two hats on. One was with my Corio CEO hat on because we've got a big project out there in New York Attentive Energy. So I was spending some time with the team out there and hearing all the great work they're doing. But also I'm the chair of the Global Wind Energy Council, so I was out there with that hat on, helping on the advocacy piece more generally. So it was a really interesting week. If you want market intelligence that generates revenue, then book a demonstration of IntelStor at IntelStor. com Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway energy, the second largest us clean power owner will pay about 3. 9 billion for the minority 8 percent stake held by the family of late board member, Walter Scott. The deal involves 2. 37 billion in cash. The exchange of Berkshire Class B shares for 1. 6 billion BHE shares and issuance of a 600 million one year note. As of January 1st, Berkshire Hathaway Energy owned about 14 gigawatts of clean energy capacity, including 12 gigawatts of wind. And roughly 2 gigawatts of solar and storage. Now, Phil, Berkshire Hathaway Energy has been consolidating operations over the last 6 to 12 months. Is this part of that larger plan to consolidate? Philip Totaro: It sounds like it although this is also obviously a bit of a legacy thing with taking over the stake held by, by Scott's family and presumably in some kind of a trust or something. Like. It's giving Berkshire Hathaway Energy the opportunity, as you mentioned, to just consolidate the, the company's ownership and consolidate the brands under the Berkshire Hathaway Energy umbrella, which theoretically gives them more power. Bandwidth and more capacity to keep borrowing if they need to borrow to go, build out the pipeline of renewable energy projects that they've got. So one thing that we've talked about recently on the show is the fact that there's a lot of investment funds and firms coming into the renewable sector. What they bring with them is capital, or the ability to go leverage the, the capital base that they've got to go borrow money. So for your big utility company owner operators, they want to be able to do a similar thing. And this is going to help kind of bolster the, the company's ability to, to do that. Joel Saxum: Yeah. It's the same thing. Like Phil saying, we've talked about on the show before Berkshire Hathaway backed Warren Buffett, big money is following the same concept as you're seeing with a lot of other big money groups, Vanguard, BlackRock, all these different and, and of course, pension funds and whatnot of putting their capital Into energy infrastructure world, right? So they're helping build up the energy transition, but that's because they see it as good business. So when you see big money coming into a certain sector, you can bet it's going to be around a while and they're betting banking on success. UK Allen Hall: based Octopus Energy has made two new investments in the U. S. green energy market. Following its initial entry just three months ago with solar farm acquisitions in Ohio and Pe...

E. Shaw Renewable Investments, also known as DESRE. This investment, valued up to 1. 7 billion U. S. dollars, aims to bolster Desiree's growth and enhance its market position. Desiree, a leading renewable energy company, currently operates a platform with over 6 gigawatts of gross capacity in projects either operational or under construction. Phill, when you start tossing around the B for billion number in financial exchanges, there's a massive movement of cash in renewables. Philip Totaro: Well, and this follows on the theme that we've been talking about over the past, whatever, two, three months about asset management firms and financial investors kind of pouring money into renewable energy asset owners. Obviously, Macquarie's got a substantial background throughout their investments in Australia, in Europe throughout the rest of the world. Interestingly enough, the U. S. is a market where they've been kind of under penetrated. So, they took their time with evaluating who to partner up with and the fact they picked D. E. Shaw is, is kind of fascinating. You Shaw's got a, a fine track record with the, the performance of their assets, according to our data. And most of their projects are quite profitable. So it's it's a good way for Macquarie to get their, their foot in the door. Joel Saxum: De Shaw on the renewable side, right? De Shaw is a very large company, $60 billion in assets and committed capital with a smaller portion of that being the renewables arm. But it's, it's an odd thing because in the, in the operational circles that we talk to a lot in the wind energy industry in the United States, we don't hear de Shah's name too much. But of course you look at this six gigawatts of power moving and grooving here. Behavioural economics explains why we make such stupid decisions with our money. Unfortunately, the study has found that behavioural biases are very hard to control and, even if you are aware of them, no one is immune from poor decision-making when it comes to both life and our finances. This is where quantitative or systematic investing comes in - a realm of investing typically reserved for institutional investors like super funds and the ultra-wealthy. Quantitative investing removes emotion and behavioural biases from investing. Instead, it relies on some of the smartest people in the world to put together hundreds to thousands of signals and data points for a large language model to make decisions. Humans are involved but just for oversight, in case the model does not truly understand a situation. For example, it may not understand that airlines were not a fantastic short-term opportunity amid a significant sell-off during the COVID-19 crash. This is a far cry from fundamental investing, which relies on a fund manager or investor analysing macroeconomic and stock-specific factors, meeting with management teams, trying out products and services and reviewing a business's balance sheet before making an investment decision of their own. The gains from quantitative strategies are typically small, but they're consistent over time. You are not going to have years of 10-20% plus outperformance over an index, but equally, you shouldn't experience huge drawdowns either. And over the long term, this small amount of alpha adds up. Interestingly, Macquarie Asset Management was one of the few firms that saw its funds achieve 100 batting averages - for both the large-cap and small-cap categories - over a 10-year period. This means that these funds, which are all quantitative strategies*, have outperformed the benchmark 100% of the time in every three-year rolling period over the past decade. So, to learn more about quantitative investing, quantitative ETFs and the major trends shaping ETF markets, Livewire's Ally Selby was joined by Blair Hannon, ETF Strategist at Macquarie Asset Management. We discuss some common misconceptions surrounding quantitative investing, the signals that have worked over the last few years, and the magic of compounding over the long term. Plus, Hannon also shares why he strongly believes that passive investing is not creating a bubble in markets - despite what some of the world's most famous investors (like The Big Short's Michael Burry) would have you think. On this week's episode you get not one, but two Oscars as Oskar Meijerink, SkyNRG to discuss the transition from procurement to production with Oscar on The SAF Podcast. Oskar has been with SkyNRG since he left university where he wrote a dissertation on project finance for Sustainable Aviation Fuels. He has since been working on the project side, being kept busy with a HEFA project being developed in Delfzijl, Biomass Fischer-Tropsch facility in the Pacific northwest and their eSAF facility under development in Amsterdam. Oskar shares the progress of each location, why they are working across pathways, the process of choosing where to place SAF refineries and what feedstocks to use. All of these decisions are critical if projects are to get to Final Investment Decision. This is something we explore in detail as we explore the challenges of finding investment and what building blocks need to be put in place to best position projects to receive favourable investment decisions. We also touch on the recent Topco investment by Macquarie Asset Management and how encouraging this is for inevestor sentiment on the companies overall strategy. We end the episode by reflecting on the demand side of the market and how SkyNRG's history in this with their Fly on SAF solution and how critical a component understanding of market demand is when considering SAF production. Having already helped over 40 airlines reach sustainability goals, as well as corporate customers, travel companies and airline customers decarbonise their air travel, Oskar highlights why the understanding of the demand environment drove them towards getting involved on the supply side. This is a fantastic episode that gets into the real detail of building SAF projects and the opportunities and challenges that they present. Macquarie Asset Management, through its fully owned offshore wind unit, Corio Generation, is making a fantastic investment. 50 billion investment in offshore wind over the next seven years. Corio generation, along with partners like TotalEnergies plans to invest in markets, including New York, New Jersey, Scotland, England, Taiwan, and Ireland. Phil, they've hit all the hotspots for offshore wind, but putting 50 billion into that marketplace is massive. Philip Totaro: Yeah. And keep in mind that, we're talking about a market that is likely to be several trillion dollars over the next five to seven years. They're certainly doing their part but also keep in mind that Corio has only really existed, obviously backed by Macquarie Group, but has only really existed for about the past year. I think they just celebrated their one year anniversary very recently. They've come quite far in a short period of time with the deployment of the capital that they've got and the markets that they're looking at are absolutely, the places You want to be, now that the U S has gotten through most of its nonsense and we're getting back on track this is a good market to be in Taiwan's relatively stable. There's a few kind of concerning signals out of there. But for the most part, that's going to still continue to grow and then England and Ireland are absolutely growth markets with a huge pipeline of projects in both those countries. Joel Saxum: 50 billion over the next seven years is their plan. Right now, and correct me if I'm wrong, Phil, but a gigawatt offshore wind farm, fixed bottom, costs between 3 and 5 billion to build, probably about 4 billion. Does that sound about right? Philip Totaro: CapEx costs on an offshore fixed bottom is probably somewhere between 2. 5 and 3 million per megawatt. You can, But yeah, your typical sized project at this point, if it's around a gigawatt in size you're talking about, 3 billion. Joel Saxum: Okay, so we're looking at 15 gigawatts of generation that they could get installed with that 50 billion or something around that. That's huge. That's that will help some countries in some areas hit some generation goals for offshore wind, definitely. And another one to mention here as well, we mentioned on the podcast the other day, but Onyx Insight recently purchased by Macri as a whole. They're also bringing in advanced analytics and tools to the Wind farms that they're installing. Allen Hall: The Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council added seven new projects, including a Mingyang facility, to the Stage 2 Strategic Investment Model list, which aligns supply chain with developers plans for the ScotWind leasing round.
Listeners of the Rhodes Center Podcast have probably heard of companies like Black Rock, State Street and Vanguard. You've also probably heard how, through ETFs and other investment products, these types of investment firms own a staggering share of the world's biggest companies (20-25% of the S&P 500 by some estimates). But in this episode, you'll hear about a whole other side of asset management; one that's more opaque, and possibly much more influential (and corrosive) to our daily lives. Brett Christophers is a geographer and professor at Uppsala University's Institute for Housing and Urban Research, and author of the new book “Our Lives in Their Portfolios: Why Asset Managers Own the World.” In it, he explains how asset management companies like Blackstone and Macquarie Asset Management do more than passively own shares. Over the last few decades, they've begun to invest in and actively run a growing portion of our infrastructure and essential services: hospitals, care homes, water treatment plants, bridges and even parking meters. On this episode, he talks with Mark Blyth about the economics of this new subspecies of asset management, and how they've begun to reshape our society, economy and planet in ways we don't fully understand. On Wednesday, Australian shares rose to a two-month high, as tech shares gained 3.5%, following the US tech rally. The local tech sector was led by Afterpay's parent company Block (ASX:SQ2), which rose to its highest closing price since the company officially listed on the ASX in January, at $188.10. Financials closed at the sector's highest level since mid-November. Major banks, NAB, CBA, Westpac and ANZ all closed with solid gains, which may partly reflect comments on the increase in interest rates by US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. Morgan Stanley has said that ANZ and NAB could announced a $1 billion and $2 billion buyback, respectively, in May, while CBA may launch another share buyback, with an additional $2 billion, if it goes ahead with plans to sell its 10% stake in the Chinese Bank, the Bank of Hangzhou. Looking at the ASX200 leaderboard shares in Uniti Group (ASX:UWL) led among blue chips. UWL surged 10.7% before entering into a trading halt in afternoon trade. This followed news of a $5 a share bid for Uniti, made by Macquarie Asset Management and PSP Investments. This new proposal beats the current offer on the table from Morrison & Co by approximately 11%. Meanwhile Fisher & Paykel Healthcare (ASX:FPH) fell 8%, after the company announced it expects a decline in its sales guidance for FY22 and also warned that freight costs are weighing on margins. The most traded stocks by Bell Direct clients yesterday included Lake Resources (ASX:LKE), Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST) and the Australian Foundation Investment (ASX:AFI). US equities closed in the red, with all three major benchmarks lower. The Dow was down 1.3%, the S&P500 down 1.2% and the Nasdaq down 1.3%. What to watch today:Following the broad sell-off in New York overnight, the SPI futures are suggesting the ASX200 will fall 0.73% at the open this morning. In commodities, the oil price rallied, trading at US$114 per barrel, after Russia announced that a storm in the Black Sea had damaged one of the world's largest oil pipelines, which has disrupted exports from Russia and Kazakhstan. The gold price is also higher, however remains under pressure as the Fed calls for an aggressive monetary tightening to combat inflation. Iron ore is lower, moving away from the 7-month high hit earlier this month, following demand concerns with the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in China. Companies that are set to go ex-dividend today include Cash Converters (ASX:CCV), Healius (ASX:HLS) and Spark New Zealand (ASX:SPK). Trading Ideas:Bell Potter maintain their BUY rating on Uniti Group (ASX:UWL) and have increased their price target from $4.50 to $5. This price target is a premium to the office price of $4.50 by Morrison & Co, in the bidding war for Uniti. Trading Central have identified a bullish signal in Ioneer (ASX:INR) indicating that the price may rise from the close of $0.58 to the range of $0.69-$0.71, over 19 days, according to the standard principles of technical analysis.
