National Gas currently operates the UK's 7500km national transmission system – the backbone that is responsible for keeping the lights on, business running and warming homes in the winter. Jake Tudge, Corporate Affairs Director, explains why the company believes hydrogen has a critical part to play in its future transmission network and discusses some of the initiatives it is currently undertaking to transition to hydrogen.

The Joint Venture: an infrastructure and renewables podcast

The team looks over the past week of news in the energy industry and gives its views on some big market trends - joined by special guest Jake Tudge corporate affairs director at National GasIn this episode, we delve into the startling outcome of the UK government's fifth CfD allocation round (AR5), which garnered zero bids for large-scale offshore wind projects, jeopardising the country's 2030 targets for renewable energy. We discuss the industry's concerns and the implications for future auctions.National Grid's new approach to grid capacity allocation aims to speed up the connection of shovel-ready projects. Taken along with Government promises to relax planning laws for wind farms, is this the impetus that the industry needs? We also cover significant deals in the sector, including KKR and Infracapital's combined investment in Zenobe, news of DIF Capital Partners exceeding its fundraising target, and Shell securing a large PPA in Germany, extending its reach into the European renewable market. Also on this episode, we have an exclusive interview with Jake Tudge about what's  changed and what has stayed the same since the formation of National Gas, delving into the future of the UK's hydrogen infrastructure. Tudge is the corporate affairs director at National Gas, responsible for the organisation's external engagement, brand, and reputation. National Gas formed in February 2023 following the majority sale of National Grid Gas Transmission & Metering by National Grid Group to a consortium led by Macquarie Asset Management with the British Columbia Investment Management Corporation.Hosted by:Oliver Carr - Lead analystDila Cebeci - Senior analystAshkenaz Al - Reporter Reach out to us at: podcasts@inspiratia.comFind all of our latest news and analysis by subscribing to inspiratiaListen to all our episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other providers.Reach out to us at: podcasts@inspiratia.comFind all of our latest news and analysis by subscribing to inspiratiaListen to all our episodes on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other providers.

Ben Davison looks at (rants about?) how Insiders managed to spend three quarters of the show talking about submarines in the same week that the robodebt royal commission ended, the national reconstruction fund became law, the RBA put up interest rates for a record 10th consecutive time, the Aston by election is only three weeks away and the NSW election is only two weeks away! Ben discusses how the unions in NSW that have been racking up wins across education, healthcare, transport as part of the campaign and the flow on effects for working people across the state.  You can join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow The Robodebt Royal Commission has wrapped up and despite Insiders discussing the cultural problems of the public service without mentioning that culture flows from the top, Morrison, Tudge, Porter, Stuart Robert, Ben discusses what the lack of billionaire owned media coverage says about the state of public discourse. The RBA and Productivity Commission continue to kick working people.  Ben makes clear that Labor government's need to intervene to support working people.  That a former Liberal staffer running the Productivity Commission is unacceptable and that the RBA continues to use a broken ideology rather than economic reality to set monetary policy. Ben looks at the first two weeks of the parliamentary sitting for 2023 where Labor introduced housing policy, manufacturing policy and emissions reduction policy all of which were opposed by Dutton and the Greens.  Plus our friend Mary Doyle is running for Aston following Tudge's retirement. The bosses pamphlets have argued against working people being involved in the running of the country but you can have your say by joining your union at australianunions.org.au/wow Adam Bandt went on Insiders and couldn't name one country that has banned new coal and gas, couldn't say how much it would cost and wouldn't support his own Senator's statement that the government should arbitrarily override the RBA.  Ben discusses why the RBA is wrong and how the government can systemically address the issues without random interventions. While the nation is gearing up for the launch of YES to The Voice campaigns (union online launch this Wednesday night https://www.australianunions.org.au/action/voice-campaign-launch  and Statement from the Heart campaign launch on Thursday https://fromtheheart.com.au/take-action) Samantha Maiden repeated Dutton talking points about the Voice not "fixing things" on Insiders.  Ben looks at how empowerment has improved outcomes in the NDIS and why The Voice will help close the gap. And finally Ben takes a look at the chaos that is the NSW Liberal state government.  From Minister's distributing explicit pictures to undisclosed conflicts of interest in toll roads to MPs banned from entering parliament while facing criminal charges running as an "independant" the Liberal-National Coalition looks on the ropes.  UnionsNSW is running a campaign "Essential Workers Deserve Better" focused on the high costs, low wages, high workload approach of the Liberals that Labor has promised to change. The announcement that former Liberal minister Alan Tudge will resign from the parliament marks the end of a controversial political career, but it's also throwing open new challenges for the party, and opposition leader Peter Dutton. Speculation is swirling about who will be selected to run for Tudge's seat in Melbourne at the upcoming by-election, and while the pressure is on for the Liberal party to pick a woman, factional infighting means nothing is guaranteed. So, can the Liberals retain the seat of Aston, which it barely clung on to at the last election? Or is the seat within Labor's grasp? Ben Davison looks at the big stories at the end of the first sitting week of parliament in 2023 and neo-liberal skew that Insiders offered up to the ABC audience. While mouth piece for the bosses pamphlet, Phil Coorey, was promoting his friends at the Mineral's council advertising campaign the hidden truth that profitable major corporations will be fighting to keep workers divided and wages low during 2023 was exposed.  Join your union at australianunions.org.au/wow Jim Chalmer's delivered the good news that power prices won't be going up by as much as they were forecast, due to their price cap mechanism.  Ben analyses how the Labor government is having to do a huge amount of heavy lifting on economic reform to try repairing both a decade of Liberal mismanagement and the ongoing capture of our institutions by neo-liberal ideologues.  The Reserve Bank's continued assault on working people and dangerous obsession with making more people unemployed, wages lower and economic growth both lower and more concentrated into the hands of a few is proving the Liberals with political talking points and Labor with real problems. Alan Tudge has quit parliament and, as usual, the truth has been papered over by an emotional speech given by a hypocritical and shameful middle aged upper class white man using his children as a shield from any genuine critique.  Tudge has quit in disgrace.  End of story.   The Week on Wednesday LIVE! at the Adelaide Fringe festival starts in just 10 days so get your tickets to see Van Badham and Ben Davison in The Yurt now https://adelaidefringe.com.au/fringetix/the-week-on-wednesday-live-with-van-badham-ben-davison-live-podcast-af2023

And that's all before the "retirement" of Christian Porter and Greg, I don't take calls from Pfizer, Hunt.  To pile further shambles into the cess pit of the Morrison government Alan Tudge was forced to stand aside following allegations of physical and mental abuse by his former staffer/lover.  Having promoted the hypocritical Tudge to education Minister, where he spent his time lecturing educators on Australian Values, Morrison was finally forced to investigate his behaviour following the public revelation of the abuse complaint. Ben look at how in a desperate attempt to distract Morrison made a university funding announcement, but the devil is in the "must be insecure work" details All of which stands in stark contrast to the Albo Labor Party which this week announced a new Powering Australia policy which delivers 600,000 new jobs, 84% renewable energy, $275 a year power bill savings, cheaper electric vehicles and a 43% cut in emissions. “I spent the whole morning painting and doing origami and felting projects with my daughter – and not only did she not say “thank you,” but she refused to help clean up!” (I actually said this myself this morning:-)) “We took our son to Disneyland and went on every ride he wanted to go on except one, which was closed, and he spent the rest of the trip whining about how the whole trip was ruined because he didn't get to go on that one ride.” (I hope I never have to say this one…I'm not sure I could make it through Disneyland in one piece.)   You might recall that we did an episode a while back on https://yourparentingmojo.com/manners/ (manners), and what the research says about teaching manners, and how what the research says about teaching manners comes from the assumption that manners MUST be explicitly taught – that your child will NOT learn to say “thank you” unless you tell your child “say thank you” every time someone gives them a gift. We also talked about how parent educator Robin Einzig uses the concept of “https://visiblechild.wordpress.com/2015/09/02/model-graciousness/ (modeling graciousness)” and that if you treat other people graciously, when your child is ready, she will be gracious as well.  The problem here, of course, is that most people expect your child to display some kind of manners before they are developmentally ready to really understand the concept behind it. But what really underlies manners?  Well, ideas like gratitude.  Because when we train children to say “thank you” before they are ready to do it themselves they might learn to recite the words at the appropriate time, but they aren't really experiencing gratitude. http://cds.web.unc.edu/mentors/tudge-jonathan/ (Dr. Jonathan Tudge) of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro tells us much more about this, and how we can scaffold our child's ability to experience gratitude, if we decide we might want to do that. Dr. Tudge's book, https://www.amazon.com/Developing-Gratitude-Children-Adolescents-Jonathan/dp/1107182727 (Developing Gratitude in Children and Adolescents) (co-edited with Dr. Lia B. L. Freitas) contains lots more academic research on this topic if you're interested.

Ben Davison looks at how Tim Paine's resignation from the captaincy of the Australian cricket team over sexual misconduct contrasts to the promotion of Alan Tudge by Scott Morrison over sexual misconduct that occurred around the same time in 2017.  Paine has resigned over sexting prior to it becoming public knowledge while Tudge conducted an affair with a member of his staff and was subsequently promoted when news of the affair became public on 4Corners. Why does Morrison allow someone who has fallen so far below the bar required to be a leader in our nations cricket team to continue to be a cabinet minister in his government and lecture the nation's educators on what is and isn't acceptable values to teach our young people? The latest wage growth figures have come out and show that the real value of wages continues to drop.  ALP Treasury spokesperson Jim Chalmers has claimed on Insiders that petrol prices have gone up $900 while wages have declined $700 and that Labor welcomes a debate about economic management. The final sitting fortnight for 2021 is about to kick off and Albo has challenged Morrison to a series of debates.  Given Morrison won't be passing a federal ICAC and may struggle to get his religious discrimination bill passed, with some in his government saying it goes to far and others saying it doesn't go far enough, a series of debates might be the only useful way to fill the allotted time.  We have seen more death threats against Victorian and Queensland MPs, as well as actual violence committed against a cross-bench MP's daughter, while globally coordinated far right and Qanon aligned protests took place in Australian capital cities and across Europe .

The Delta version of coronavirus has taken hold in Sydney and if the NSW Government doesn't take action to reverse the tide, the daily case numbers are going to reach 2,000 and it's an number that is unlikely to be palatable to the electorate. And if it continues to spiral out of control, it's likely to take hold of the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, who is now facing pressure to resign.Every historian for perhaps the past two hundred years would recommend that Afghanistan is a difficult country to invade, and best left alone: its terrain is difficult to navigate, and there are many hills for local armies to hide and launch attacks against unwanted imperialist forces. But successive empires have ignored history: the British Empire waged three wars during the 18th and 19th centuries and retreated in each war (they are slow learners); the Soviet Union between 1979-1989; and the United States during 2001-2021 (slow learners, but over a longer period). And each of these empires has left behind humiliating defeats. The Taliban has returned and will retaliate against the Afghan interpreters who assisted Australian forces in Afghanistan. Morally, the Australian Government has an obligation to support these Afghan interpreters, but this is a government without morals or ethics. Best to whip up a frenzy against these people, lest they seek asylum in our land of milk and honey (sans ethics), and even make the claim that these people – who risked their lives and the lives of their families to assist Australian forces – are now a national security threat to Australia. One war ends, but another war continues – Australia's longest running war, the culture and history war. The Minister for Education, Alan Tudge, has decided that he won't approve the new national curriculum because it's “warped” and “neo-Marxist rubbish”. A well-read Minister for Education would understand that Marx said history repeats first as tragedy, the second time as farce, but it seems Tudge has repeated history as a calamity and disaster in his own mind.

The Minister for Education, Alan Tudge, resorted to fudging figures to denigrate Australia’s school performance at the The Age education summit last week. He claimed the UK as the new benchmark for education performance but he misrepresented its results by ignoring serious flaws in them and other evidence showing no improvement. He also fudged data on school funding and student results in Australia. Join Henry and Trevor Cobbold as they discuss fighting for equity in education. This conversation was originally broadcast on 3SER's 97.7FM Casey Radio in May 2021. It was produced by Rob Kelly.

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

“I spent the whole morning painting and doing origami and felting projects with my daughter – and not only did she not say “thank you,” but she refused to help clean up!” (I actually said this myself this morning:-)) “We took our son to Disneyland and went on every ride he wanted to go on except one, which was closed, and he spent the rest of the trip whining about how the whole trip was ruined because he didn’t get to go on that one ride.” (I hope I never have to say this one…I’m not sure I could make it through Disneyland in one piece.) You might recall that we did an episode a while back on manners (https://yourparentingmojo.com/manners/) , and what the research says about teaching manners, and how what the research says about teaching manners comes from the assumption that manners MUST be explicitly taught – that your child will NOT learn to say “thank you” unless you tell your child “say thank you” every time someone gives them a gift. We also talked about how parent educator Robin Einzig uses the concept of “ modeling graciousness (https://visiblechild.wordpress.com/2015/09/02/model-graciousness/) ” and that if you treat other people graciously, when your child is ready, she will be gracious as well.  The problem here, of course, is that most people expect your child to display some kind of manners before they are developmentally ready to really understand the concept behind it. But what really underlies manners?  Well, ideas like gratitude.  Because when we train children to say “thank you” before they are ready to do it themselves they might learn to recite the words at the appropriate time, but they aren’t really experiencing gratitude. Dr. Jonathan Tudge (http://cds.web.unc.edu/mentors/tudge-jonathan/) of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro tells us much more about this, and how we can scaffold our child’s ability to experience gratitude, if we decide we might want to do that. Dr. Tudge’s book, Developing Gratitude in Children and Adolescents (https://www.amazon.com/Developing-Gratitude-Children-Adolescents-Jonathan/dp/1107182727) (co-edited with Dr. Lia B. L. Freitas) contains lots more academic research on this topic if you’re interested.   References Halberstadt, A.G., Langley, H.A., Hussong, A.M., Rothenberg, W.A., Coffman, J.L., Mokrova, I., & Costanzo, P.R. The Australian taxpayer pays considerable support for people in need, but the problems of poverty seem intractable. So, what other issues should we be thinking through? Family breakdown, drug and alcohol abuse, indigenous disadvantage, poor educational outcomes all feed into the current culture of poverty that seems impossible to resolve. New and creative intellectual policy ideas need to be considered and the Minister outlined some of these. The primary approach to tackling child poverty over the last 30 years – higher income support payments and more community services – will not provide the solution to significantly reducing entrenched impoverishment over the next 30 years. Rather, we will have to collectively address what I call the ‘pathways to poverty' more systemically. These include welfare and other dependencies, poor education standards and family breakdown. This is the focus of much of the government's efforts. ____________________ The Centre for Independent Studies (CIS) promotes free choice and individual liberty, and defends cultural freedom and the open exchange of ideas. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

I actually hadn’t realized what a can of worms I was opening when I started the research for today’s episode, which is on the topic of manners and politeness. It began innocently enough – as an English person, for whom manners are pretty important, I started to wonder why my almost three-year-old doesn’t have better manners yet. It turns out that it was a much more difficult subject to research than I’d anticipated, in part because it draws on a variety of disciplines, from child development to linguistics. And at the heart of it, I found myself torn between two different perspectives. The parenting philosophy that underlies the respectful relationship I have with my daughter, which is called Resources for Infant Educarers, or RIE, advocates for the use of modeling to transmit cultural information like manners – if you, the parent, are a polite person, then your child will learn about manners. On the flip side of that is the practice of saying “what do you say?” or something similar when you want your child to say “please” or “thank you,” something that I know a lot of parents do. My general approach has been to model good manners consistently but I do find it drives me bananas when my daughter says “I want a [whatever it is]” without saying “please,” and RIE also says parents should set a limit on behavior when they find it annoying. So I have been trying to walk a fine line between always modeling good manners and requiring a “please” before I acquiesce to a demand, and I wondered whether research could help me to come down on one side or the other of this line and just be sure about what I’m doing. So this episode is going to be about my explorations through the literature on this topic, which are winding and convoluted – actually both the literature and my explorations are winding and convoluted, and by the time we get to the end I hope to sort out how I’m going to instill a sense of politeness in my daughter, and how you might be able to do it for your child as well.   Other episodes referenced in this show 004: How to encourage creativity and artistic ability in children (and symbolic representation) (https://yourparentingmojo.com/004-how-to-encourage-creativity-and-artistic-ability-in-young-children/) 026: Is my child lying to me?
