Today on the show I get to speak with Cristina Bornstein who has worked in the field of energy healing for over 25 years. Her main modality is Eden Energy Medicine (The Eden Method) but also includes techniques from her shamanic studies and her own intuitive experiences with earth and universal energies. She believes that Energy Medicine is an amazing complementary care support system and anempowering self-care tool. Using different modalities Cristina gently empowers you to tap into your inner wisdom and power to facilitate a deeper sense of health, happiness, and emotional balance to help you live radiantly. Each session or self-care class is customized and Cristina “follows the energy” as Donna Eden would say, which creates a sacred and safe healing space.Cristina is passionate about self-care believing we are our own health advocates! This is why being the Director of Monthly Self-Care Classes with the Holistic Health Community is perfect match. Cristina also serves on the HHC board and offers energy medicine sessions at the HHC Healthcare Day.Cristina specializes in Self-Care Guidance, Chakra Transformations, Stress Management, Soul Retrievals and Self-Care Empowerment. She offers in person and skype sessions. We talk about her entry into energy medicine which started very young, how she learned to follow her intuition, and where it has guided her along the way. It has brought her to some of her most transformative teachers, including Shamanic Studies with John Perkins and expeditions to the Ecuadorian rainforest, Guatemala, and Colombia to learn and live with indigenous tribes -- to Donna Eden whose work really connected the dots across so many other areas of studies Cristina was drawn to over the years -- and finally or perhaps more accurately, a return to nature as her teacher. She shares thoughts on self care as well as simple suggestions of things to do at home or at work to support different emotional states and experiences or just to proactively nourish yourself with some care. As a part of the Holistic Health Community's Self Care Program, she's organized an event happening tomorrow, Tuesday, November 26th at the Institute for Family Health's Pine Street location where I'll be offering Tending to the Heart Sound Bath at 6pm. As with most HHC offerings it is by sacred reciprocity. "Though there is no charge for services, we encourage sacred reciprocity by making a donation, by offering volunteer service or by doing an act of loving kindness toward someone in need."We also mention a special fundraiser for the Holistic Health Community happening this Sunday, December 1st, at Lifebridge in Rosendale featuring a sound bath with Ricarda O'Connor. If you have the ability to support this vital community organization, this will be not only a gift to them, but a gift to you to receive from this sound experience.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda from Radiokingston.org.Our show music is from Shana Falana!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFYITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCAFollow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast

Beyond Words: The Leadership Shadow You Didn't Know You Were Casting

Building Up Women In Property

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 17:31

What leadership shadow are you casting on your team? Are you even aware of the tone you're setting in the workplace, and how it might be affecting the organisation? As leaders, we really do have the power to create a positive work environment - as well as a toxic one. However, we often don't realise just how impactful our habits, actions and overall leadership style can be on those around us. By understanding what your leadership shadow is, you can begin to intentionally create one that aligns with who you want to be and how you want to influence others in your team, organisation and in your industry. So, what is a leadership shadow?Essentially, it's how a leader's behaviours, actions and decisions cast a shadow over their team, which ultimately influences organisational culture and performance. Our shadows often have both positives and negatives and because we're in the middle, we don't necessarily see the amount of influence and impact we have. Today, we'll explore developing an awareness around what our leadership shadow is and how to use it to create a strong, cohesive and high-functioning team. The concept of a leadership shadow was developed by Pine Street, part of Goldman Sachs's leadership development team, and it comprises four key elements: what I say, how I act, what I prioritise and how I measure. We'll also explore three key components from a practical standpoint:1. Role Modelling2. Behavioural Impact3. Communication StylesIntentional cultivation of a positive leadership shadow starts with self-awareness and reflection. Although developing self-awareness is challenging, it can be achieved through self-reflection, feedback, assessments and regular check-ins. So, what does your leadership shadow look like right now? What are its positive and negative aspects? I encourage you to seek feedback from those around you to gain insights you may not see. Remember, we are all a work in progress. Being transparent about your journey fosters support and encourages others to think about their own leadership shadow. When everyone is aligned and working towards the same goal, that's when we see incredibly strong leaders and cultures that achieve sustained results.LINKS:Connect With Me:Exceptional Leadership Framework: https://www.rebeccabangura.com/5-step-framework-to-exceptional-leadershipBook your strategy call: https://calendly.com/rebeccabangura/get_in_touchWebsite: https://www.rebeccabangura.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebeccabangura/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamrebeccabangura/

Today on our episode #389 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer has a special show in honor of James Kent, also known as Jamal James Kent, an incredible chef, restaurateur, husband, father, and friend, who suddenly passed away this past weekend from a heart attack at the young age of 45. The New York Times wrote that James was “a distinguished chef and successful Manhattan restaurateur who seemed poised to become a food industry tycoon.” He was an extremely well-respected leader, and had already accomplished so much in our industry, and simply put, he was loved. As a tribute, we are rebroadcasting our episode #253 with James, which originally aired on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2020, when Shari spoke with him remotely during the trying times of Covid. James' company, Saga Hospitality Group, includes restaurants, Crown Shy (one Michelin star) and Saga (two Michelin stars), and cocktail bar, Overstory (No. 3 on North America's 50 Best Bars list), which are all in the same building in Manhattan's Financial District at 70 Pine Street. Crown Shy is on the ground floor, and Saga and Overstory are part of the 62nd, 63rd, 64th and 66th floors, along with private dining room, 12 terraces and 360 panoramic views. James future plans included Snackville, re-imagined culinary concepts at the amusement park on Santa Monica Pier in California as a partnership with Saga Hospitality Group and private equity platform, S C Holdings; several projects from fine dining to a fast-casual chicken sandwich concept with NBA great LeBron James, whose investment firm is LRMR Ventures; a 140-seat restaurant at 360 Park Avenue South in Manhattan, inspired by the Grand Central Oyster Bar with Executive Chef Danny Garcia, who was just named winner of Top Chef: Season 21; a new bakery and casual all-day cafe in the newly renovated Domino Sugar factory building in Brooklyn with Executive Pastry Chef Renata Ameni; and five restaurants in partnership with Paris luxury department store, Printemps, at 1 Wall Street, led by Culinary Director Gregory Gourdet. James was also working with Shari's publisher Phaidon on a new book to tell the story of his restaurants at 70 Pine and his life growing up and cooking in NYC. Shari is proud to have called James a friend. Our deepest condolences to James' wife Kelly Kent and their children Gavin and Avery, and everyone who loved James too. Thank you, James, for sharing your story with us, and always making Shari feel special. She will greatly miss you. #RIP ** On episode #253 of All in the Industry®, Shari Bayer is joined by James Kent, Executive Chef of Crown Shy, and the Owner/Partner of J2K Creative. A Greenwich Village native, James started his culinary career as a summer apprentice at Bouley when he was fifteen years old, and has since spent time in the kitchens of Babbo, Jean-Georges, and Gordon Ramsay. James joined the team at Eleven Madison Park (EMP) as a line cook and was quickly promoted to sous chef, and in 2010, he placed first in the Bocuse d'Or USA Competition; then representing the US at the international finals of the Bocuse D'Or in Lyon, France, placing 10th in the world. When he returned to New York, he was named chef de cuisine of EMP, and under his leadership, the restaurant received numerous accolades including four stars from The New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on World's 50 Best Restaurants. James was promoted to Executive Chef of The NoMad in the fall of 2013, the same year that it received one Michelin Star. In 2017, he left to pursue his first solo project, an ambitious pair of restaurants in the landmark Art Deco building at 70 Pine Street in New York's Financial District, with his partner Jeff Katz. Crown Shy, the first of those restaurants, opened in March 2019, and received 2 stars from The New York Times and one Michelin Star just six months after opening. Today's show also features Shari's PR tip to strive for excellence; Industry News discussion, including COVID-19; and Solo Dining/Takeout experience from Einat Admony's Taim in the West Village, NYC. Stay safe and well. ** ** Check out Shari's book, Chefwise: Life Lessons from Leading Chefs Around the World (Phaidon). #chefwisebook **  Photo Courtesy of Saga Hospitality Group. Listen at Heritage Radio Network; subscribe/rate/review our show at iTunes, Stitcher or Spotify. Willie's Bar-B-Que has only been a part of Montverde for six years, but it has become a fixture in the small community. Willie Fulmore and his daughter, Tomeka Fulmore-Smith, have spent their lives working with food. Willie Fulmore opened his barbecue restaurant nearly 30 years ago, first setting up shop in Winter Garden. “When I was stationed in Leesburg and there was a gentleman on Pine Street (with a business) by the name of Jim's Barbecue Place and every weekend, everybody at the facility would go there and I would go there,” Willie Fulmore said. “So I said, ‘You know, that would be a neat little business,' because he was open two days a week. I said, ‘Can't get any better than that. A guy can work two days a week and he can make a living.'” At that time, he and his daughter worked as food safety inspectors for the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Willie Fulmore worked with factories dealing in processed foods while his daughter worked with commodities and fresh produce. He opened his restaurant, having people help him run it. “I would get promoted on the job and then I would lease it out to a group of people and then they wouldn't do so well and I'd have to come back and get it boosted up again,” he said. That pattern persisted until he and Tomeka Fulmore-Smith both retired allowing them to run the business together. The pair sold their property in Winter Garden to Matthew's Hope and moved the business to Montverde about six years ago. “I love Montverde. I call Montverde ‘Mayberry,'” Willie Fulmore said. “It's a quiet, cool little place. I like Montverde. It fits me.” “They've been very welcoming. The community is absolutely amazing,” Tomeka Fulmore-Smith added. “It's such a beautiful, beautiful community.” Willie Fulmore brings a lot of expertise to his craft. He grew up in South Carolina, where his family regularly barbecued. He also made friend's with the owner of Jim's Barbecue Place. “I went and I worked free the whole summer for the guy, you know, as a friend,” he said. “So he kind of showed me a lot of tips and I what I learned from my dad and the other guys — I put it all together.” Those tips have paid off. The father-daughter duo said they have had people coming from miles for their food. There have been quite a few people who love taking road trips, and they would literally travel just to try barbecue,” Tomeka Fulmore-Smith said. “We've had people come up (from South Florida). They drove up for the day — ‘Yeah, we're from Miami. We heard about you, we read your reviews.'” Willie Fulmore believes the restaurant only being open two days a week adds to the hype. “People always want what they can't get enough of,” he said. Though he likes to brag about only working two days a week, Willie Fulmore is a busy guy. He is also a minister and works with the homeless. “I preach at the men's homeless shelter. I've been doing that for the last 12, 15 years and I'm really involved with that,” he said. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, the pair share their entire menu with Candace Campos and Lisa Bell. Willie Fulmore also shares what sets his barbecue apart and why it takes some special skill. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Less than one year ago, on Thursday June 15th, 2023 in small town Marion county a home was up in flames. Sequatchie is only home to about 600 people, but neighbors recall hearing glass breaking and loud pops around 8 pm that slow summer night and by 9 pm police were called to the scene of a house fire at the 200 block of Pine Street. As firefighters put out the blaze, investigators enter the scene and find pure horror. 3 adults were dead along with 3 children and one other man who was still alive but had suffered 3 gun shot wounds. He was later airlifted with life force to a Chattanooga hospital.Gary and Regina were married and living together in 2020, which is when this horrible story starts. Regina had an adult daughter, Brittnee, a mother of three children. The couple had a very intense relationship, with calls from neighbors reporting them fighting, domestic violence calls and stories of abuse from friends and family. Neighbor, Noah Simmons recalls breaking up fights between Gary and Regina and remembers them going tit for tat. That same year Regina filed a domestic assault report against Gary claiming her husband had 50-60 guns. Another report from Regina says she was afraid for her life because she thought her estranged husband would get drunk and kill her. Regina then files a restraining order, in May of 2023 against Gary and a judge orders them no contact. That same time Regina's daughter Brittnee was being proposed to on May 29th. Soon after that Brittnee's fiancé moves in with Brittnee, her three kids and her mom.On June 15th, 2023 Gary would arrive at Regina's home. He would then shoot and kill Regina and Britnee and maybe one of her children. Of her three kids, at least one was found with a gun shot wound. The other two kids may have died from smoke insolation. Gary was also found with a self inflicted gun shot wound. Police believe Gary went there for revenge on his estranged wife, killing her, her daughter and her daughter's 3 children. Aaron was a month into his new life at Regina's house as a finance and stepdad before all of his dreams would literally come burning down around him. Police believe Gary lost it, drove to his wife's house where he broke in and killed her. In his rage he ends up killing Brittnee, shooting Brittnee's finance Aaron and killing all of her children,. Gary then decided to set the house on fire before killing himself. The investigation is still fresh and more information is sure to come out. We were able to talk to Aaron's cousin AJ about the incident. AJ is an expired follower and she wants to make sure we get the information correct. We talk to AJ next…We will be following this case as it continues. Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube and podcast channels. Like/ share/ review! we are on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. The Massachusetts emergency shelter system is officially overburdened, according to state data, and officials say they have to turn away families while putting them on a waitlist. While the ongoing migrant crisis is contributing to this, there are other factors forcing residents onto the streets, including inflation and the skyrocketing cost of housing. Pine Street Inn in Boston has been working for years to create more permanent supportive housing in the Boston area, hoping to uplift those who find themselves at their lowest and help them get back on their feet. Lyndia Downie returns to the show to update Nichole on their efforts and talk about what's fueling the Commonwealth's housing emergency.

There was a lady in Seattle famous for being a little rude. She was Russian. Brisk, would describe her treatment of people. She bought coffee where I did, on Pine Street. There was a guy who was always around there. He was famous for threatening people. Once, he started trying to kick in the window of the coffee place (it was a weird set-up, the window was low to the sidewalk). One day, the man famous for threatening people beat to death the Russian lady known for being brusk. Everyone knew it would happen one day, just not to her. Take that instance, multiply it by 20,000 and then multiply that by hundreds of interactions in a day and you might begin to understand this monster the Left thinks it can control. Give Satan credit for his scheme. The Left is using crazy people to topple society. They are using crazy people to punish protectors, both official and unofficial. Satan, of course, is using the people of The Left. It's not the Monster of crazy people running the cities which will devour the Left, it's THE spirit of hatred for humanity they have unleashed which is eating the skin off of their faces. Give God His due. He's already won. What does God's Word say? 1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. Julia Cathrine Monnin Ducray. Born Julia Monnin, her family was from Switzerland and they had emigrated to Pennsylvania. Living next to them in Pennsylvania, was the Ducray family. The Ducray's had boarded a steamship in France in 1839.  The journey was almost fatal for 15 year old Jean-Baptiste Ducray, his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Southeast of Nova Scotia, the steamship began taking on water. The passengers and crew feared they would sink and began to throw all of their possessions overboard. The Ducray family threw overboard their wooden chest containing $2,000 in gold and everything else they had brought with them. Jean-Baptiste's mother kept only a wooden cross bearing an ivory carving of Jesus.  The ship sank, and everyone from the ship was left shipwrecked on what is now known as Sable Island. They went days without food. They were starving, crazed. A passenger from the ship overheard the ship's crew planning to kill and eat Jean-Baptiste and his father. He hid them by burying them in sand. Luckily, only a day later, a passing ship rescued them. They arrived safely, settling in Pennsylvania, next to The Monnin family.  Julia and Jean-Baptiste Ducray fell in love and were married. When Jean-Baptiste and his brother Jean Claude went West to mine gold in California, it was barely a year into the gold rush.  He was 25 and Jean Claude was 16. They took the  Isthmus of Panama route.   This is the same trip made by Belle Cora, detailed in my book. The route saved thousands of miles and avoided the trip around the southern tip of South America's Cape Horn.  Starting in New York, they made a 2,000 mile voyage by ship to the Port of Chagres on the eastern Caribbean coast of Panama at the mouth of the Chagres river. They took a  bungo, a type of Panamanian canoe for $5 (just under 200 bucks today) for a  4 day river journey through the crocodile and jaguar bearing jungle. That was the easy part.  The men rode a 50-mile trail on mules through the steaming malaria, yellow fever, and cholera ridden jungle to the small outpost in Panama City. They waited there and caught a ship to San Francisco. Many forty-niners did not make this journey. The brothers had now survived two deadly passages together.  Upon arrival, like many immigrants of the time, the brothers Americanized their names. John B, and John C. Ducray.  The brothers traveled to Nevada City and set up camp along the Oregon Ravine on Oregon Hill.  Julia arrived soon, making the journey by wagon. The couple invested in mining and bought properties. In the spring of 1866 on a claim bought for $36 (almost $1300 today) and while cleaning up an old mudslide on the property, Julia's husband found 265 ounces of gold. Equalling over $5000, equivalent to almost $179k in 2023. Julia's husband Jean Baptiste, or John B, was a descendent of one of the Ducray Nine brothers, known for saving the life of the French King "Henry the Great" in the late 1590's. These nine brothers were knighted and awarded with villages besides the Jura Mountains in France. Their new villages contained hills, forests, orchards and beautiful meadows with flocks. John B was born in a medieval chateau at one of these family villages. It had a fountain, a Roman aqueduct and a mill, powered by the creek that ran through the village. He lived there until he was fifteen and learned about engineering the water flow and studied the geology of the nearby caves and quarry. His knowledge helped him later design wing dams and sluices for gold mining and irrigation on his own property. And his interest in geology and hydrology led to consulting on the first reservoir built for Nevada City's municipal water system.  On 35 acres of mining-stripped bedrock in Nevada City, the couple built a fourteen room, two-story home with five bedrooms and large parlors upstairs and downstairs on Orchard and upper broad streets  and re-created the nearly self-sufficient French farm that John B had grown up on. They planted vineyards and orchards of walnut, apple, pear, and almond trees. They had a single milk cow for providing milk, butter, and cheese. They kept honey bees and maintained four acres planted in clover for the cow and bees. They had a huge basement beneath the house that was useful for storing their produce and John B.'s wines and brandies. Julie planted large "cabbage roses"  around the home. It is said that the 150-year-old pear tree John B. planted there continues to bear delicious, giant Bartlett pears. John B. and Julia's home and orchards on Orchard Street are included in the first map of Nevada City, which was  hand-drawn in 1869. Orchard Street was in fact named for John B.'s orchards. For decades the couple would exhibit wines, brandies, honey in comb, peaches, pears, grapes, walnuts, almonds, buckwheat, string beans and potatoes at the local and State Fairs. They bartered or paid in gold for everything that they could not produce themselves. Julia and John B. were fast friends with the French pioneer nurseryman, horticulturist Felix Gillet upon his arrival in town. Felix had opened the town's first barber shop which sold French fineries including pens, stationery, and toys on Commercial Street, just below Pine Street. The couple inspired Felix to plant orchards, and he eventually established a world-renowned 20 acre nursery on Aristocracy Hill.  (Barren Hill Nursery) Nursery Street in Nevada City was named for Felix's nursery there.  Julia and John B. adopted niece Theresa and raised her as their own. The three of them led a happy life. They attended Saint Canice Catholic Church that was recently built and often went to the state fairs, often accompanied by Felix Gillet, who wrote about the events. Gillet often wrote magazine articles glorifying the Ducray's farm, orchards and produce. So did many newspapers of the time. John B passed away after a battle with pneumonia. Penicillin had not yet been developed. Julia was so heartbroken by his loss, she passed away four months later. They were laid to rest in Pioneer Cemetery, across Orchard Street from their home. They left all their properties to 21 year old adopted daughter Theresa Julia.  Felix Gillet and Theresa Julia grew a bond through grief and sorrow and were married.  The couple did not mind their difference in age, Felix was 32 years older than Julia Theresa, or height, Theresa Julia was taller. Theresa Julia took her middle name, perhaps in homage to her beloved Aunt. After they married, Felix added the second-story addition to his established Barren Hill Nursery on Nursery Street (named for his nursery) on Aristocracy Hill. Felix and Julia Theresa remained married for 17 years until Felix passed away in 1908. He also left his properties to Julia Theresa. She ran his Barren Hill Nursery (also known as Felix Gillet Nursery), with the help of head nurseryman George Dulac. Dulac was the son of the Ducrays' and Felix's good friends, Nevada City pioneers Louis and Manuela Dulac. She and George grew up in school together. They had been childhood friends since her arrival in Nevada City. They were married a year after Gillet's death. Theresa are laid to rest in Pioneer Cemetery, beside Jean-Baptiste, Julia Catherine and Felix.

Episode 136: Street Med 2.      Future Dr. Bedi presents the history and purpose of street medicine and shares why she became interested in this topic. Dr. Saito tells his personal experience and shares the particular challenges of unhoused patients.Written by Indudeep Bedi, OMS III, MSIII, Western University of Health Sciences. Comments by Steven Saito, MD. You are listening to Rio Bravo qWeek Podcast, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California, a UCLA-affiliated program sponsored by Clinica Sierra Vista, Let Us Be Your Healthcare Home. This podcast was created for educational purposes only. Visit your primary care provider for additional medical advice.Indu: I want to talk about street medicine in some general terms, as well as Tracy Kidder's article published in the NYT this year, called "You have to learn to listen," which is based on Kidder's book Rough Sleepers, on Dr. Jim O'Connell's work with the Boston homeless community.  Dr. Saito: Let's start by talking about street medicine in general. What exactly is street medicine? Street medicine was a term coined by Dr. Jim Withers, from Pittsburgh, who has been practicing the art since the 90s. He founded the Street Medicine Institute (SMI) in 2009, which strives to connect providers worldwide to address homelessness. Providers practice healthcare, of course, but first and foremost, it is about building relationships and demonstrating you are one of them instead of the power differential that usually exists in our system. It requires a paradigm shift, and it's a shift in thinking. Dr. Jim Withers himself, for example, began to wear ragged clothes and put dirt in his hair to show these vulnerable individuals that he was accepting of who they were and respected them for it. In return, they respected him. Dr. Saito: Do you know of other programs which exist? There are a bunch of programs now that have spurred up, such as Doctors without Walls, San Francisco's community health center, of course, are very own CSV, and the Boston Pine Street shelter, which I will talk about more. The SMI publishes an annual report, and there are about 50 independent street medicine programs nationwide. Many global programs have sprung up, too. An international street medicine symposium was founded in 2005. In general, this is an excellent community of providers who can share best practices regarding this unique population. Even a student coalition at the SMI helps get student-run programs off the ground. Dr. Saito: What is one of the homeless community's biggest problems? That is a tricky question because of the complexity surrounding this issue. I will tackle this by answering that housing is one of the most considerable problems. The housing may be either transitional or permanent. Transitional operates to get the individual immediately off the street. In contrast, permanent housing takes longer to find, but many charities have bought real estate to create permanent housing. Permanent housing also includes the individual being vetted, in a lot of cases, to make sure that they will do okay if they have a place of their own. Are they able to be independent? Can they pay rent? Do they have a job? In 2009, however, a new program was implemented known as Housing First. This social program provided "a no-strings-attached" housing to the homeless population with substance use and mental health problems. What was great about this program is it was found that the relapse rate was much lower in this population when compared with other programs. In 2018, however, due to gentrification and rent increases, there was a very steep rise in homelessness in cities on the west coast, such as Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. To combat this, many state-wide programs were established that work with healthcare providers to provide these individuals with the help they need. Dr. Saito: What is the article "You have to learn to listen" about?I would first like to read a short excerpt from the article: "In American cities, visions of the miseries that accompany homelessness confront us every day — bodies lying in doorways, women standing on corners with their imploring cardboard signs dissolving in the rain. And yet, through a curious sleight of mind, we step over the bodies, drive past the mendicants, return to our own problems. O'Connell had spent decades returning, over and over, to the places that the rest of us rush by." Dr. O'Connell completed his IM residency at Mass General in Boston and was about to move on to an oncology fellowship when he was approached by some colleagues with a request to take a position as a physician for one year in a grant-funded program from the city of Boston to address homelessness in the 1980s. The program operated outside of Pine Street Inn homeless shelter. One of the initial experiences that Kidder describes Dr. O'Connell having was his first day of being there, being surrounded by stern-faced nurses who obviously knew more than he did about this niche population. He really had to prove himself to them and the individuals who were homeless. Soon after he joined, Dr. O'Connell met a nurse by the name of Barbara McInnis, who told him, "I really think we want doctors, but you've been trained all wrong. If you come in with your doctor questions, you won't learn anything. You have to learn to listen to these patients." Nurse McInnis also taught Dr. O'Connell a common practice at their shelter, which was to soak patients' feet by filling a tub and pouring in betadine, as a lot of the population did not have footwear. This reflection of "placing the doctor at the feet of the people he was trying to serve" is beautiful. That is precisely what street medicine is about. Dr. O'Connell has been managing the street medicine program at Pine Street since then, and that oncology fellowship remains forgotten. The program he is a part of now has 19 other shelters in order to tackle Boston's growing homelessness problem. However, it was apparent to Dr. O'Connell a few years in that these shelters were not really making a difference in terms of curbing the amount of homelessness. That problem was still continuing to grow. In addition, many other systemic issues were leading to the rise in homelessness, such as the AIDS epidemic around the time, lack of welfare programs, gentrifications, etc. But the difference was being made in the sense that these individuals who had been pushed to the margins, who were overlooked, and who were in essence burned by the healthcare system in one way or another and highly suspicious of providers for that reason, were now able to be coaxed into receiving and accepting the help they needed. This was done by, as said previously, placing the physician at the feet of the people he was trying to serve.Over the years, the program continues to grow and even created a new clinic with beds, offering housing vouchers, but it also faces other problems, such as funding and efficiency. A significant focus for the homeless community is housing options. And most people will do really well after being housed, while for others, finding housing brings more troubles with it when they need to be continuously moved from home to home to avoid eviction. I think a lot of it has to do with the lack of resources that come with housing. Homelessness is so complex that finding a home is simply not enough, and these individuals can again fall through the cracks if those other issues are not addressed. While street medicine does a lot of good, it is a harsh reality that individuals have a low life expectancy and will die of this homelessness because of the other issues that remain a constant in their lives, such as substance use, HIV, AIDS, and mental health issues. Dr. Saito: How did you come to be interested in this topic?I have been interested in street medicine for a while now. I volunteered in some projects that exposed me to the perils facing the population, especially for addiction. For example, I had an excellent opportunity to work with an organization that would put up tents to test the communities for HIV and connect them with resources if needed. We would specifically go to the areas where people who were homeless or of low SES tended to congregate. I really started to think about it more recently when I encountered a patient on the Infectious Disease service who was incredibly complex in an immunocompromised state due to AIDS, with multiple hospitalizations and pretty much every infection under the sun. He was what we commonly refer to as non-compliant because of substance use, and whenever we found placement for him upon discharge, he would run away from that home. I think, as providers, we are very quick to judge and label patients as non-compliant without pausing to understand the nuances of their condition. He would later continually return to the hospital in an acute exacerbation of his illness. With each hospitalization, his baseline continues to worsen. And I was deeply saddened to come across such a patient and also recognized within myself this frustration with the system in which we operate. I am a bit despondent about his outlook, and the work of the CSV team is critical to these rough sleepers. ____________________Conclusion: Now we conclude episode number 136, “Street Med 2.” Future Dr. Bide recounted the experience of Dr. O' Connell and some of the challenges faced by our unhoused patients. Dr. Saito added his personal experience and reminded us that compliance with medications may be difficult in unhoused patients. Here in Clinica Sierra Vista, we are proud of our street medicine program, and we hope many more volunteers would join us in our mission to bring “health for all.”This week we thank Indudeep Bedi, Steven Saito, and Hector Arreaza. Prior to starting LEC, he was CEO of the Iclif Leadership & Governance Centre based in Malaysia.  Formerly, he has been Chief Learning Officer of both Coca-Cola and Morgan Stanley, and has held senior positions at American Express, HSBC and Goldman Sachs. At Goldman, Rajeev helped found Pine Street – the firm’s acclaimed leadership academy – and headed Pine Street for Europe and Asia. Before embarking on a career in Executive Development, he was a banker and currency trader. Today, he is a sought-after international speaker and has been widely featured in international media platforms from Bloomberg to CNN to Harvard Business Review. THE BACK STORY After a high-flying start in a coveted investment banking career, Rajeev felt disillusioned by the prevalent greed and erosion of values in the business world. He noticed the idealism and enthusiasm of hundreds of starry-eyed young professionals quickly give way to cynicism and hopelessness. For him, the inspiration for transformation arrived in the most unusual place -- his father's funeral.  At the funeral, I noticed that entire town had come for my parents' funeral. Thousands and thousands of people pouring in. I couldn't understand. My father was an accountant, an ordinary citizen, not a very rich person. Why did the whole town come? He's not a leader in the traditional sense -- he's not a Neta, he's not a public servant, he's not ... so why? For the funeral, there was a traffic jam. Nobody could get in. Everyone wanted to pay their respects. In my grief at the time, I looked around and saw people I hadn't seen for years. I remember seeing an elderly gentleman who carried me in his arms when I was a baby. "Uncle, you came all the way?" I asked him. He replied, "I have come to salute your father. He never had much, but whenever anybody asked him for anything, whatever he had, he gave. There are not many people like that, son." I asked another person the same question. He said, "In the sea of corruption that taxation is, your father was one beacon of honesty. Never took a bribe, never gave a bribe, never did anything wrong and I've come to salute him." I asked a third person and heard a similar response. "Well, he had the courage to fight against injustice. Never ever was he scared. He had so many powerful people wanting to shut him down and even life threats because he was creating havoc for corrupt people, but he was not scared. I've come to salute him." Years later as I was sitting down in deep reflection, I realized what leadership was because I was reminded of this funeral and realized that to be a leader you don't have to be big, you don't have to be famous, you don't have to be a genius. You have to have a heart full of gold. And you know the kind of gold I'm talking about! A gold made of grace. You need a heart full of grace and a burning desire to create a better future. That's what my father was embodied -- change the world through his own example. Be the change. That was him. His father's example deepend his understanding of about leaders like Gandhi and Mandela, who even after most testing circumstances, never allowed hatred, pride and greed to come in their way and always stood-up for the wellbeing of ALL. That made him realize, that world doesn't need more "bosses". What we needed, were true "Leaders." Leaders who can truly listen to the music of their inner voice and their values, . Leaders who can truly dance to a large purpose, beyond simply money, power or fame. And Leaders who are truly  "Stewards" for a more beautiful and sustainable future for ALL.  That inspired Rajeev to devote himself to the work of planting seeds for more purposeful and values-oriented business and leadership.  In 2014 and 2017 he was named one of Top 100 Global Thought Leaders for Trustworthy Business by ‘Trust Across America.’  Rajeev and his family have lived in fifteen cities in eight countries, and he currently splits his time between Singapore and USA.
