Have you ever been to Mammoth Cave National Park? It's really not that impressive, is it. Sure, it's more than 425 miles long, but only about 10 miles are open to the public. Mammoth Cave is indeed a big, dark hole in the ground. And apparently there are a fair number of visitors to the national park in Kentucky who are not impressed with the cave and its underground artworks created by dripstones, stalactites, and stalagmites. In fact, a recent survey ranked Mammoth Cave as the third-most disappointing destination in America. Really? To get the park's response, we're joined today by Molly Schroer, the park's management analyst. We'll be back in a minute with Molly.

Members of his family began working as cave guides in the 1830s. Like many of the early guides, they were African Americans and through their knowledge, they became local, national, and even international celebrities, despite being enslaved. He also talks about how his family's relationship with the Cave was abruptly severed in 1941, when it became a US National Park and all African Americans workers were dismissed; and his wish to make sure today's park visitors learned about the important contributions his family, and other African Americans cave workers, made in the exploration and development of this celebrated natural wonder.

It is the longest known cave system in the world, with over 400 miles of explored passageways. The cave is a part of the Mammoth Cave National Park, which was established in 1941 and designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.The history of Mammoth Cave dates back thousands of years. Native American tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee, and others, have long recognized the cave's significance. They used it for various purposes, such as shelter, burial grounds, and ceremonial rituals. Evidence of their presence, including artifacts and drawings, has been discovered within the cave.European settlers began exploring Mammoth Cave in the late 18th century. In 1809, a slave named Stephen Bishop became one of the first guides to extensively explore and map the cave. Bishop's knowledge and expertise were instrumental in uncovering many of the cave's secrets. During the 19th century, Mammoth Cave gained popularity as a tourist attraction. Visitors from all over the world flocked to the area to witness the awe-inspiring natural formations and learn about the cave's history. The cave's unique geological features, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and underground rivers, continue to captivate visitors to this day. While Mammoth Cave is primarily known for its geological wonders, it has also been the site of numerous Sasquatch encounters. Sasquatch, also known as Bigfoot, is a legendary creature believed to inhabit remote wilderness areas. There have been several documented sightings and encounters with Sasquatch in the Mammoth Cave area.Witnesses have reported seeing large, hairy creatures roaming the forested areas surrounding the cave. These sightings often occur in the early morning or late evening when the area is less crowded. Some witnesses have described hearing strange vocalizations or experiencing an eerie sense of being watched.Purchase Brian's Book Sasquatch Unleashed: The Truth Behind The LegendBackwoods Horror Stories On YouTubeBackwoods Horror Stories On Apple PodcastsBackwoods Horror Stories On SpotifyJoin Patreon Support The ShowLeave Us A VoicemailSupport Our SponsorsVisit Hangar1 PublishingJoin The Sasquatch Odyssey Fans GroupFollow Sasquatch Odyssey On Instagram Sasquatch Odyssey YouTube ChannelVisit Our WebsiteParanormal World Productions Merchandise Store Support The Showhttps://www.patreon.com/paranormalworldproductionsAll The Socials And Stuff/Contact Brianhttps://linktr.ee/ParanormalWorldProductionsbrian@paranormalworldproductions.com Send Brian A Voicemail Or Tell Your Storyhttps://www.speakpipe.com/SasquatchOdysseyPodcastFollow The Show On Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sasquatchodyssey/Follow The Show On TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@sasquatchodysseypodcast?_t=8XRHQxPMFYo&_r=1

Episode 24:  Welcome to Lake Life with Molley and Chad! In today's episode, our friends Jamie and Adam join us to discuss Nolin Lake in Kentucky.  It's also called Nolin River Lake.  Interesting Facts about Nolin Lake Nolin Lake spans parts of Hart, Grayson and Edmonson County, near Mammoth Cave National Park.  It's another man-made lake, like Barren River Lake. It covers roughly 5,700 acres.  There are several popular campgrounds near the lake.  They are Dog Creek Campground, Wax Campground and Moutardier Campground.  There's also Moutardier Resort and Marina.  The Nolin Lake State Park also features a primitive campground at Brier Creek (this may actually be a privately-owned campsite). Fishing on Nolin Noted for its blue-green water, Nolin River Lake is recognized as a top 5 Kentucky fishing lake for catfish, bass, crappie and walleye (or it could be white bass). Getting Their Start with Lake Life Adam started his lake life experience back in 1994-1995.  He bought his first fishing boat in 1996.  Jamie comments that they actually bought a 22' Crownline runabout, before they settled on a specific lake.  They visited several lakes with the kids.  The past year, they switched to a tri-toon pontoon boat. Chad comments about how pontoon boats have evolved over the years.  He was amazed at the prices some of them go for (i.e. $225,000).  Jamie and Adam add that boat prices have increased 30% over the past 3 years.  Molley says this could be the COVID-demand.  People wanted to get out, without being around a lot of people, so the interest in boats surged – resulting in a price surge. Molley describes her experience with early pontoons and how the public has begun to change how they look at the comfort and features offered by this class of boats.  It's a significantly easier ride, even if choppy water. The Decision to Buy a Home at Nolin Lake It was very convenient to drive to a lake that was close to home.  They already had friends at the lake.  Once they found a nice home for sale, they jumped on it.  When COVID hit, it was a terrific refuge.  Chad described how his family used their lake house all the time during the pandemic. What's a Lake Life Weekend Like? Jamie notes that her anxiety starts on Thursday night because she just wants to get there.  Adam heads down Friday morning with the kids.  Jamie arrives after work.  Adam starts the weekend with typical chores (e.g. cutting grass, filling up the gas tank, etc.).  Afterwards, he and the girls might head out on the water for a while.  Adam's excited about having the tri-toon this year, because he can simply tie it up to the dock, rather than having to mess with the trailer.  When Jamie arrives, she might go out on the water, but usually decides to start dinner for the family.  When they had their runabout, they each had their specific job when it came to trailering the boat.  Adam handled the truck and Jamie handled the boat.  Having well defined roles can save a ton of stress and frustration.  Chad and Molley explain why in Episode 1.  The pontoon is going to take a bit more finesse.  Adam and Jamie did some practice runs, when the lake wasn't real crowded. Molley and Chad have had their own “adventures” when it comes to trailering their tri-toon.  In Episode 8, they offer some great tips for ramp etiquette and trailer safety.  It takes good team work, practice and patience.  Although, Chad admits, he still has those moments. (You'll understand if you listen to this episode).  You might also want to check out Episode 7, “Don't Be THAT GUY!” Jamie explains that they have a neighborhood ramp that does make launching and trailering the boat a little easier and much more convenient.  The boat ramp is always a tricky place.  Molley's mom commented in Episode 14 that if people would just remember to show some common courtesy, things would go better for everyone.  At the ramp, it's all about situational awareness. Let's get back to the typical weekend topic.  Jamie describes Saturday morning.  Adam usually starts breakfast and they hit the dock.  They've learned to involved the kids with lunch and snack prep.  Jamie's primary job is to make sure everyone else has their stuff taken care of, that sunscreen is applied and that they don't forget trash bags.  This is a Pro-Tip! The girls like to go tubing.  Adam recommends doing this earlier in the day, in case there's a lot of boats on the water.  If you can get out early, it's a bit less crowded. What other Lakes Have They Visited in Kentucky? Adam has fished in most of them.  For pleasure boating, he's been on Nolin, Cumberland, Green, and Dale Hollow.  Jamie grew up going to Green River Lake in Campbellsville.  She briefly discussed the difference between going in an RV verses having a home at the lake. Even their dogs get excited when they figure out everyone is heading to the lake for the weekend. Back to the Saturday schedule.  Once the tubing is done, they'll go find a cove with some friends and tie up for the day.  They'll try to watch the sunset and then it's time to head back to the lake house for dinner.  After dinner, they might decide to go visit with neighbors until it's time to head to bed. What Advice Would They Offer to Someone Considering the Lake Life? Adam points out that piloting your boat on the right-side, just like when you're driving actually is a thing.  Jamie comments that Lake Life can be a lot of work, but it's all worth it.  It's a financial commitment, and there's a risk of burnout if you're going to do it every weekend.  But again, it's worth it! If You Won the Lottery, What Boat Would You Buy? Jamie says she'd get a large Sea Ray or 28' Crownline to cruise in.  She'd want an open bow.  But in reality, she'd be just as happy owing a tiki hut on an island serving margaritas.  Adam says he'd buy a place in Florida and a 390 MTI.  What Advice Would You Offer to a New Boater? Adam says you have to have patience.  Don't worry about the boat.  Just enjoy the experienced.  Jamie comments about how much she enjoys spending quality time at the lake.  There are always great conversations.  It's brought them closer over the years.  Chad comments how no-signal on the cell phone often helps the kiddos to open up about what's actually going on in their lives.  Jamie also really values the sense of community at the lake.  Their little neighborhood is pretty close-knit.  Everyone keeps an eye on everyone – especially the when it comes to the kids.  It's a safe environment and everyone keeps an eye out for each other. Molley talks about how there's a specific spot on the trip down when it really hits her that she's at the lake.  The stress literally melts away. Nolin Lake was built for flood control.  This means the US Army Corps of Engineers drops the water level during the winter.  Adam adds this begins on October 15th.  Once that happens, you really shouldn't try to take larger craft out on the water.  The water level is increased, beginning on April 15th. Jamie talks about how her kids love to use low water levels to do some treasure hunting.  It's amazing how many anchors you can find and recover! In closing, Jamie recommends patience and caution.  You need to be aware of your surroundings.  She talks about how a storm quickly rolled in and the winds really made for some tense moments. Molley strongly recommends everyone having specific jobs to do.  If a crisis occurs or surprises happen, everyone knows what their responsibilities are.  It's a good life lesson for the kids. That's a wrap for this episode.  We'd like to thank our friends Jamie and Adam for guest hosting with us.  We hope you found it helpful, insightful and maybe a little entertaining.  EPISODE SPONSOR INFORMATION: We'd like to thank today's sponsor and encourage you to contact them for your insurance needs. The History of Computing

Imagine a game that begins with a printout that reads: You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out of the building and down a gully. In the distance there is a tall gleaming white tower. Now imagine typing some information into a teletype and then reading the next printout. And then another. A trail of paper lists your every move. This is interactive gaming in the 1970s. Later versions had a monitor so a screen could just show a cursor and the player needed to know what to type. Type N and hit enter and the player travels north. “Search” doesn't work but “look” does. “Take water” works as does “Drink water” but it takes hours to find dwarves and dragons and figure out how to battle or escape. This is one of the earliest games we played and it was marvelous. The game was called Colossal Cave Adventure and it was one of the first conversational adventure games. Many came after it in the 70s and 80s, in an era before good graphics were feasible. But the imagination was strong.  The Oregon Trail was written before it, in 1971 and Trek73 came in 1973, both written for HP minicomputers. Dungeon was written in 1975 for a PDP-10. The author, Don Daglow, went on the work on games like Utopia and Neverwinter Nights Another game called Dungeon showed up in 1975 as well, on the PLATO network at the University of Illinois Champagne-Urbana. As the computer monitor spread, so spread games. William Crowther got his degree in physics at MIT and then went to work at Bolt Baranek and Newman during the early days of the ARPANET. He was on the IMP team, or the people who developed the Interface Message Processor, the first nodes of the packet switching ARPANET, the ancestor of the Internet. They were long hours, but when he wasn't working, he and his wife Pat explored caves. She was a programmer as well. Or he played the new Dungeons & Dragons game that was popular with other programmers. The two got divorced in 1975 and like many suddenly single fathers he searched for something for his daughters to do when they were at the house. Crowther combined exploring caves, Dungeons & Dragons, and FORTRAN to get Colossal Cave Adventure, often just called Adventure. And since he worked on the ARPANET, the game found its way out onto the growing computer network. Crowther moved to Palo Alto and went to work for Xerox PARC in 1976 before going back to BBN and eventually retiring from Cisco. Crowther loosely based the game mechanics on the ELIZA natural language processing work done by Joseph Weizenbaum at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in the 1960s. That had been a project to show how computers could be shown to understand text provided to computers. It was most notably used in tests to have a computer provide therapy sessions. And writing software for the kids or gaming can be therapeutic as well. As can replaying happier times.  Crowther explored Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky in the early 1970s. The characters in the game follow along his notes about the caves, exploring the area around it using natural language while the computer looked for commands in what was entered. It took about 700 lines to do the original Fortran code for the PDP-10 he had at his disposal at BBN. When he was done he went off on vacation, and the game spread. Programmers in that era just shared code. Source needed to be recompiled for different computers, so they had to. Another programmer was Don Woods, who also used a PDP-10. He went to Princeton in the 1970s and was working at the Stanford AI Lab, or SAIL, at the time. He came across the game and asked Crowther if it would be OK to add a few features and did. His version got distributed through DECUS, or the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society. A lot of people went there for software at the time. The game was up to 3,000 lines of code when it left Woods. The adventurer could now enter the mysterious cave in search of the hidden treasures. The concept of the computer as a narrator began with Collosal Cave Adventure and is now widely used. Although we now have vast scenery rendered and can point and click where we want to go so don't need to type commands as often. The interpreter looked for commands like “move”, “interact” with other characters, “get” items for the inventory, etc. Woods went further and added more words and the ability to interpret punctuation as well. He also added over a thousand lines of text used to identify and describe the 40 locations. Woods continued to update that game until the mid-1990s. James Gillogly of RAND ported the code to C so it would run on the newer Unix architecture in 1977  and it's still part of many a BSD distribution. Microsoft published a version of Adventure in 1979 that was distributed for the Apple II and TRS-80 and followed that up in 1981 with a version for Microsoft DOS or MS-DOS. Adventure was now a commercial product. Kevin Black wrote a version for IBM PCs. Peter Gerrard ported it to Amiga Bob Supnik rose to a Vice President at Digital Equipment, not because he ported the game, but it didn't hurt. And throughout the 1980s, the game spread to other devices as well. Peter Gerrard implemented the version for the Tandy 1000. The Original Adventure was a version that came out of Aventuras AD in Spain. They gave it one of the biggest updates of all. Colossal Cave Adventure was never forgotten, even though it was Zork was replaced. Zork came along in 1977 and Adventureland in 1979. Ken and Roberta Williams played the game in 1979. Ken had bounced around the computer industry for awhile and had a teletype terminal at home when he came across Colossal Cave Adventure in 1979. The two became transfixed and opened their own company to make the game they released the next year called Mystery House. And the text adventure genre moved to a new level when they sold 15,000 copies and it became the first hit. Rogue, and others followed, increasingly interactive, until fully immersive graphical games replaced the adventure genre in general. That process began when Warren Robinett of Atari created the 1980 game, Adventure.  Robinett saw Colossal Cave Adventure when he visited the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in 1977. He was inspired into a life of programming by a programming professor he had in college named Ken Thompson while he was on sabbatical from Bell Labs. That's where Thompason, with Dennis Ritchie and one of the most amazing teams of programmers ever assembled, gave the world Unix and the the C programming language at Bell Labs. Adventure game went on to sell over a million copies and the genre of fantasy action-adventure games moved from text to video.
