I had three uncles who were Methodist ministers. They so very faithfully served parishes in the state of New Jersey. They were men who were strong Christians, biblical Christians, born-again Christians, and they were proud to be Methodists when the United Methodist Church was a biblical church to be proud of.But, like other old line protestant denominations, the UNITED METHODIST CHURCH has gone its own way, departed from the biblical way and brought its own man-made interpretation to scripture and the Christian view, succumbing to the pressure of current culture rather than the scriptural love, admonition, and standards of the Christ. The United Methodist Church General Conference voted overwhelmingly in May to disavow the once clear ban on clergy who are “self-avowed practicing homosexuals.” Such individuals can now be ordained and become full ministers in the Methodist Church. In addition, individual UMC churches can now decide whether or not to conduct and ordain gay marriages (weddings).Prior to this new and radical vote, the UNITED METHODIST CHURCH authorized any individual Methodist church to depart from the denomination and become independent. ALMOST EIGHT THOUSAND METHODIST CHURCHES DID SO, Bible believing, real Christians and real Christianity at the core, unwilling to abide by these new woke, current-culture changes. That led one critic to state:“The General Conference has as expected rolled back not just decades of United Methodist policies, but centuries of Christian teaching.”This critic, Mark Tooley, said further:“Liberal theology and politics displaced orthodox doctrine, evangelism, and exacting spiritual standards.”Founder of the real Methodists, John Wesley, would turn over in his grave! One of the nation's largest protestant religious denominations has gone woke, has gone rogue, and once with more than 5 million members, is now a shell of its former self. When this matter came up for vote, you could say that some 8 thousand congregations, hundreds of thousands of real Christians, voted with their “feet and wallets.” To practice real Methodism, real Christianity, and real biblical teachings. Liberal, woke, protestant denominations continue to do what they have always done, adding a pious blessing and an air of divine sanction to the cultural politics of the day no matter how far left those politics moved. They followed the sexual revolution of the times, they supported abortion, and homosexuality, and transgenderism, all in the name of current and compromised “divine love.”Now, the United Methodist Church no longer believes that marriage is an inclusive and sacred union between one adult man and one adult woman. Man can marry man, and woman can marry woman. That man-made decision is of course absolutely contrary to biblical teaching and the tradition of the UMC for more than 3 centuries.Interestingly, in 1970, only some 50 years ago, THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH claimed the following:“We do not condone the practice of homosexuality and consider it incompatible with Christian teaching.”And in 1984, the following:“Therefore, self-avowed practicing homosexuals are not to be certified as candidates, ordained as ministers, or appointed to serve in the United Methodist Church.”Forty years ago, the UMC believed, followed, proclaimed, and operated by biblical teachings and standards. Somehow, false teachers, as the Apostle Paul would say, took over, gained control, and corrupted THE WORD OF GOD, reinterpreted that and destroyed, overnight, Christian practice and belief. My three born-again uncles, once proud Methodist ministers, would turn over in their graves. The Apostle Paul was incensed at such arrogant, prideful, manmade false teaching, and he warned all to stay away from them, have nothing to do with them, and in fact, said of them:“Let them be accursed!”What a sad day. Under the great Constitution of America, and the immutable First Amendment, there is absolute freedom of religion, where any American citizen can believe what he or she wishes, and worship as they will. They can adopt any belief, see and understand God as they desire, and worship as they please or not at all. Our constitution allows no man, no government to in any way forbid any human being from worshipping as they please, establishing any religion they wish, no matter whether true or factually based. That freedom is absolute, unconditional, and cannot be abridged by any government authority. THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH can posture any set of beliefs they wish and no one, not even their very own congregations can prevent that from happening.HOWEVER, it is absolutely untrue, the highest form of falsehood, for the UMC to declare it still remains fully Chrisitan. The UMC cannot declare itself a Christian denomination, following Christian practices, for their conduct clearly indicates they are anything but. They are now some sort of a church man-made, operating as men think, not as the Bible instructs, and surely without the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit. The false teaching which the Apostle Paul feared so very much has not only crept into this church, but become dominant in its thinking, belief, and practice. A small wonder 8,000 congregations left, openly refusing to follow this man-made gospel.I have from time to time visited the state of New Jersey, travelled through its small towns and large cities. I have seen again as I did years ago, the great churches and strong edifices built by the Methodists to honor our Lord Jesus Christ. Some are absolutely magnificent, wonderful tributes to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. I spent time as a young boy with my uncles and aunts in their parishes and worshipping with them in their real and biblical Methodist churches. I remember those real, biblical, Christ-loving experiences in New Jersey towns like Woodstown, Pleasantville, Salem, Haddonfield, Ocean City, and more. My Methodist uncles and the strong church ministries they established and fostered taught me so much about the Lord Jesus Christ. Their experiences with Him and consequently mine were real, wonderful, and loving. I learned so much about my Lord through their preaching and the strong, loving bible teaching of my aunts. Methodism, real and biblical, real Christian Methodism, was an indispensable part of my life and still is. You can well imagine how sad it is for me to see the compromise, the corruption, and departure of this once great church from real, true, biblical, Christ-filled Christianity. But I thank you, thank you with all my heart, Revs. Bill Duvall, Bruce Duvall, Tom Eden, and my beloved aunts, Mildred, Jo, and Esther for the real Methodist teachings of our beloved Bible and the love of Christ. You made Him real to me and I am forever indebted. Both magnificent New Jersey churches, once filled with the love of Jesus Christ, now seem empty, hollow, devoid of real spirituality. But I, and so many others I am sure, will always remember what they once were, the message in word and song, which echoed through those magnificent cathedrals, and the real Christian men and women who once made Methodism a dynamic and passionate Christian witness.THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH is now the DIVIDED METHODIST CHURCH, splintered, broken, compromised, a spiritual shell of its former self. Perhaps the message should be to those who remain:“COME YE APART AND BE YE SEPARATE!”

These principles are not static but dynamic. And once shaping society they are not easily erased. Confidence about tomorrow can come if we recall and better live out these principles. They remind us that we each bear God's political image and are stewards of His creation. In the past few years, a new intellectual trend has appeared among America's Christian conservatives: “post‐liberalism.” Its pioneers include a handful of Catholic scholars called “integralists”—who want to integrate the state and religion—and other public figures known as “national conservatives.” These post‐liberals blame some social ills and social change that they see as problematic on the classical liberal tradition that constitutes the very founding principles of the United States: individual liberty, religious freedom, free markets, and separation of church and state. Kevin Vallier will critique post‐liberals using insights partly drawn from Catholic theology and explain why a reintegration of state and religion is good for neither the state, nor religion, nor liberty. Mustafa Akyol and Mark Tooley will share their thoughts on liberalism from Islamic and Protestant perspectives. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

2022 has been an eventful year on the Pan-Wesleyan Movement. There have been many stories in 2022: Russia's attack on Ukraine, Will Smith's slap, Elon Musk buying Twitter, and answered prayer of the Dobbs decision to name a few.  I have put together a list of the top ten stories of the year connected to the broader Pan-Wesleyan movement.  Check on this list in podcast form here: Audio and YouTube.  10. Wesley House of Studies - Baylor  An R1 university in the Baptist tradition adds a new emphasis for training students in the Wesleyan tradition. Jason Vickers is appointed as the Billy Abraham Chair for this program. 9. Asbury Theological Seminary Celebrates 100 Years  Henry Clay Morrison ‘walked across the street' to start ATS 100 years ago this year. 8. Growth of Smaller Methodist Denominations  Affiliate Initiative from the Congregational Methodist Church Association of Independent Methodist 7. Denominations Grapple with Woke-ism  For example, see this podcast. 6. African Bishops Align with Liberal UMC   There is ‘more to the story,' but check out this story at People Need Jesus and Juicy Ecumenism 5. The Growth of WBS  As many historic seminaries have struggled with financial challenges and have had to liquidate assets, Wesley Biblical Seminary has set records while retaining its commitment to the inerrancy of scripture and an emphasis on the doctrine of entire sanctification. See President Matt Ayars' CT editorial here. www.wbs.edu 4. The Global Methodist Church is Born, May 1, 2022  May 1, 2022 marked the birth of what will likely become the largest Wesleyan Denomination. See Keith Boyette's article here.  See my conversations with Keith Boyette, Rob Renfro, Jeff Greenway and Mike Lowry, and Brain Jones.  3. 2200 Congregations Exit the UMC  See this series of tweets from Mark Tooley 2.  The Next Methodism Summit  60 Wesleyan scholars came together in January to produce a document called The Faith Once For All Delivered: A Wesleyan Witness.  #1. Our Great Redeemer's Praise Hymnal  The reason I see this publication as number one is because it has the potential to to unite the Pan-Weslayn movement through a shared worship resource. When many Wesleyan institutions are struggling, this resources shares important theological emphases and distinctives from many Wesleyan denomination.   The publication will likely have a wider and deeper impact than any of the above stories because it will physically and spiritually mark Wesleyan mission, theology, and worship for decades. Mark David Hall, invited to speak recently to The Institute on Religion & Democracy by Mark Tooley on The "Threat" of Christian Nationalism, takes the position that, as defined by the critics, so-called "Christian nationalism" is largely a bogeyman term designed to shame conservative American Christians into not trying to influence politics and the public debate in the U.S. No one was calling themselves this, Hall points out, prior to the relatively recent push to stigmatize Trump voters and supporters as something nefarious, dangerous, and virulently racist. Doug Wilson and Stephen Wolfe are imprudent for embracing the term, in his view. Yet he recognizes that those with post-millennial eschatology are typically more likely to shrug about being called this ugly thing. For their part, they may be unwise, but they are basically harmless, and certainly not an existential threat to America's constitutional order or the church. And, in any event, Christian nationalism should be rejected because, for one thing, it's unconstitutional, and Congress can't endorse one religion over another; and for another thing, it's unbiblical, since we should only do unto others as we want them to do unto us. Respectfully, I think this a rather superficial incorporation of Christian faith into political engagement. What would be more robust would be expanding his reference of Abraham Lincoln as not saying God is on our side. The rest of what Lincoln said is that we want to be on God's side, since God is always right. The Carl Henry Institute for Evangelical Engagement also recently produced a panel discussion. Titled Baptists and Religious Liberty, and featuring Matt Emerson, Cory Higdon, Jonathan Leeman, Joe Rigney, and Andrew Walker, the breadth and depth of the subject is discussed through historical, political, philosophical, theological, and pastoral lenses. Baptists have been persecuted in centuries past for being non-conformists, and have long advocated for religious liberty as a result. Yet religious liberty has to be framed within a particular context, and we want to avoid the error of presentism, and the temptation to colonize the past. Similarly, Leeman offers an excellent framing of the current situation for conservative American Protestants. On the one hand, you have what he calls the Helm's Deep approach to accepting the new redefinition of religious liberty, popularized under Barrack Obama, as Christians needing to butt out of everyone else's private moral framework. On the other hand, we have those who are harkening back to the more historic Protestant Magisterium. Joe Rigney, for his part, argues this latter view. All the various spheres of legitimate authority instituted by God - the family, the church, and the state - are instituted for our benefit. Moreover, all three spheres can know this is their job from God, and they can attest openly to their knowing it, all without crossing the line from governing behavior to legislating belief. But Leeman featured in another similar debate recently, at Colorado Christian University. Facing off against Bradford Littlejohn, founder of The Davenant Institute, on Religious Liberty and the Common Good, Leeman comes out strongly against government along the lines of the "First Tabularians," or Christians who want government to legislate according to the first table of the Ten Commandments. At the end of the day, it turns out the whole business really comes down to how we feel Constantine affected the purity and testimony of Christian life, for good or ill. The Helm's Deep crowd believes it was for the worse. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Voluntary Sterilization, River Management, and Whether Man Should Engineer Nature

The Garrett Ashley Mullet Show

Mark Tooley recently interviewed Joshua Mitchell for Providence Magazine to discuss the relationship between conservative political action and Protestant Christianity. In the interview, Mitchell remarks that our policy discussions in America still center around Protestant Christian concepts like transgression and propitiation, even though Protestant Christianity per se has been largely removed from public life. Consequently, insofar as identity politics has reorganized and redefined what we identify as either iniquitous or righteous, in the absence of Christ serving as our ultimate scapegoat, whole classes of people in American society are now regarded as stand-ins where Christ formerly was regarded as our all-sufficient atonement. Three other articles I came across around the same time last week bear this out. One was in The Denver Post about women in particular getting pushback from physicians as they seek voluntary hysterectomies now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned. Never mind how vasectomies can be reversed and hysterectomies cannot, to my knowledge. Doctors cautioning young women where they may not be quite as energetically trying to talk healthy young men out of getting the old snip-snip is presented as degrading sexism. Speaking of rerouting life-giving waterways, two more articles I read last week had to do with major river management projects in America being dramatically re-evaluated for their efficacy. Unforeseen consequences have reportedly resulted from man trying to engineer nature on a grand scale over the past century. The Greeley Tribune republished the one piece. Written by Conrad Swanson, it's titled 'The West's most important water supply is drying up. Soon, life for 40 million people who depend on the Colorado River will change.' Hakai Magazine published the other, titled 'The Controversial Plan to Unleash the Mississippi," and written by a Boyce Upholt. Both of these two pieces about rivers feature an unusual airing of grievances about Native American tribes not feeling they have sufficient representation in the present-day decisions regarding water management projects. Thus the reader is required to set aside the question of tens of millions of Americans being able to eat and have safe drinking water, or make a living, or have access to reliable electricity, and take detours for social justice. Yet all these things do go together along the lines of Joshua Mitchell's observations in the Mark Tooley interview. We area told in countless subtle ways that the iniquity of straight, white, able-bodied, Protestant men and women brought us to this moment all around. Now saving the planet in these sizeable regions of the United States presumably requires setting aside Western notions regarding the value of human life, so long as the human life in question belongs to the iniquitous class. But there's more. We also see here a thorough rejection and even complete erasure of the Judeo-Christian assumption that the Creation Mandate is still something for us to adhere to and carry out. Instead, what is preferred is the self-existent, self-referential individual who wants to live for themselves, pursue social justice, and save the planet - not for future generations, but from future generations. We, then, are regarded as unnatural and a blight. If such were not the case, we might expect more attention paid to finding actual solutions to these problems. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

We'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Each week, MinistryWatch brings you news about Christian ministries, as well as the latest in charity and philanthropy, news that we examine from a Christian worldview perspective.  Our goal is to help us become better stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us. On today's program, we look at St. Jude Children's Hospital.  It's not a Christian ministry, but a lot of evangelicals donate to the organization, and the money is not always going to help children.  We also look at a shake-up at WORLD Magazine.  Finally, I offer a few thoughts about the podcast “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.”  We begin today with news from San Antonio, Texas, where a rally at a church has drawn criticism for its use of the controversial “Let's Go Brandon” chant, and for other reasons. We'll be taking next week off from the podcast so we can enjoy Thanksgiving with our families.  And, at the risk of shameless self-promotion, I'd like to mention that we are rapidly coming up on the year-end.  Just six weeks to 2022.  And, without belaboring the point too much, we need your financial support before year-end. MinistryWatch is different from many other news sites in that we take no money from the organizations we cover, we have no advertising on our site, and no paywall.  All of our content is completely free.  But we do depend on the generosity of people who believe in what we do. And, I've got to say, that if you're listening to this podcast, you're either a glutton for punishment, or you're a hard-core MinistryWatch fan.  If the latter, I hope you'll consider a year-end gift so we can keep doing what we do.  Just go to MinistryWatch.com and it the donate button at the top of the page. The producers for today's program are Rich Roszel and Steve Gandy. We get database and other technical support from Cathy Goddard, Stephen DuBarry, and Casey Sudduth.  Writers who contributed to today's program include Nidhi Upadhyaya (?), Kim Roberts, Anne Stych, David Armstrong, Ryan Gabrielson, Mark Tooley, Bob Smietana, and Steve Rabey. Until next time, may God bless you.

Most denominations are having to focus their attention on issues of human sexuality. This concern is downstream from larger theological matters of revelation and the human body. In today's More to the Story podcast, I offer reflections on recent happenings in The Salvation Army and mixed messages therein. Dr. Matt Ayars provides some feedback and observations coming outside of my denominational tradition. Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jcN7m2GzdkThere's no doubt that this is the most sensitive, perhaps uncomfortable, podcast I have published. I put it out in the public view because I believe lines are being drawn, and I want to encourage those attaching their foundation to orthodox convictions. Also, I hope it will persuade those sitting on the fence to consider the implications involved. In this podcast, I mention two earlier interviews with subject experts: Dr. Janet Dean on conversation therapy (https://tampasa.buzzsprout.com/362981/8021667-captain-s-corner-dr-janet-dean), and Mark Tooley on the split coming in the United Methodist Church (https://tampasa.buzzsprout.com/362981/8102185-captain-s-corner-mark-tooley) Also, I mention my article, ‘On Changing the Army' -https://andymilleriii.com/articles/on-changing-the-armyFor examples of the mixed messages in the Army, see the following: https://andymilleriii.com/articles/https://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO2107/S00216/the-salvation-army-supports-proposed-conversion-practices-prohibition-bill.htm?fbclid=IwAR37cXSlgL0pten9zFlZjY33usIydfxt7BYmSLzZJJ-hT3BT5Y_JQYlI7iUhttps://others.org.au/features/australian-territory-leaders-under-the-spotlight/?fbclid=IwAR1nY2ttg2jNHHpq7QiEak8d3z9aM86c-RpK5V4qH2mgK6xtmG9BuTAF5P0https://www.includedpage.com/?fbclid=IwAR3v3isUu1IN8PfaloBO147XDLXikVZgQtROHdYGrZ9wkD7pnZrbO_fDAxMThis podcast is sponsored by Wesley Biblical Seminary. George and West drew upon the resources of faith and reason—in the biblical tradition—to rise above extreme polarization. On August 25 at noon, Mark Tooley delivered a Banner Lecture entitled "Last Chance for Peace: Virginia's Role in the Washington Peace Conference of 1861." After six states had already seceded, and after Virginia’s Secession Convention was already soon to convene, former President John Tyler, from his James River plantation, suggested in a January 1861 Richmond newspaper column that there be a conference of the border states to seek alternatives to disunion. The Virginia legislature expanded the invitation to all states, whose 131 delegates convened at the Willard Hotel in February for what became known as the “Old Gentlemen’s Convention,” with Tyler presiding. Other Virginia statesmen who attended included future Confederate War Secretary James Seddon and former U.S. Senator William Cabell Rives. Typically the convention is briefly dismissed as a failure, but actually it played an important role in slowing the secession crisis and facilitating Abraham Lincoln’s safe installation into the presidency. Mark Tooley is author of The Peace That Almost Was: The Forgotten Story of the 1861 Washington Peace Conference and the Final Attempt to Avert the Civil War. He is president of a Washington, D.C. thinktank and a lifelong resident of northern Virginia.
