It's time to spin the wheel of Cubs crap again, but this time the pod starts with the guys talking about the end to the MLB lockout. Then the wheel lands on one of the most inauspicious years in Cubs' history the Mike Quade-led disaster that was the 2011 Cubs. The Cubs traded for Matt Garza, brought in Carlos Pena and brought back Kerry Wood and surprisingly none of that worked. It was the final season for Carlos Zambrano, E-ramis Ramirez and Kosuke Fukudome and we wished it had been the last year for Carlos Marmol and Ryan Dempster. We even dare to re-live the horrible late season ninth-inning collapse that helped the Cardinals squeak into the playoffs. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/desipio/message

Baseball and softball is played by 65 Million people worldwide in 140 different countries and 16 Million in the US. We had Joey Myers the founder of the Hitting Performance Lab reach out and ask to be a guest. Joey is the author of four books on hitting and has helped thousands of kids and adults improve their hitting. The discussion started with Joey getting into the main principles of the Catapult Loading System whcih propelled his book into a bestseller on Amazon. He really explained in detail the techniques to drive the ball farther. Joey is from Fresno, California which is located in the central part of the state. Fresno is known for many things but baseball is in the lifeblood of the city. There are many reasons for the incredible hotbed it has always been. In no particular order great weather, top coaching, amazing programs are all keys to the pipeline of talent. Great players such as Tom Seaver, Bobby Bonds, Bobby Cox, Matt Garza among many others originated from Fresno. California "The Golden State" has produced the most major leaguers in history with over 2300 players making the big leagues. There were 24 Hall of fame players with Barry Bonds, Ted Williams, Randy Johnson and Tom Seaver topping the list. Joey and his lab are going to continue to keep California producing great talent and we are hopng that his reach can now spread across the continent. The baseball talk turned to Canadian ball and 255 players have made major league rosters from the Great White North. Some of the top players were spoke about like Larry Walker, Ferguson Jenkins, Joey Votto, Justin Morneau, Mike Soroka, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and James Paxton were all brought up. There are only five MLB teams that draft the majority of Canadians and those teams were brought up. Both Joey and Darren are hoping to increase the number of Canadians that will progress to the pros in the future. The technical aspects and in depth detail were great to listen to and start to understand. We at Complete Sports Media highly recommend the books and the Hitting Performance Lab for coaches, parents and individuals that want to improve their hitting. We finished the conversation by discussing the cheating scandal, steroids and the best hitting coach of all time. Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex previews the NL Central with MLB.com's Pirates reporter, Tom Singer. Alex and Tom talk about the seemingly interminable Cubs rebuilding process, and whether pressure is mounting on the Ricketts to spend money on the club. The Brewers finished towards the bottom of the division last season, but could catapult back to contention thanks to a reinstated Ryan Braun and the addition of Matt Garza. Alex asks Tom whether the Pirates' inactivity in free agency following their first playoff appearance since 1992 should worry fans, or if the club didn't have a compelling reason to sign players on the open market this winter. They also talk about reigning NL MVP. Andrew McCutchen, and the incredibly affordable contract that the Pirates signed him to two years ago. The Cardinals and Reds are poised to battle with the Pirates at the top of the division, as the NL Central projects to be just as competitive in 2014 as it was in 2013. The Reds jettisoned Dusty Baker after two consecutive playoff appearances, whereas the Cardinals return largely the same core from a season ago. Even if all goes right for the Pirates and Reds, though, can they catch the Cardinals? In terms of Red Sox news, Alex discusses David Ortiz's strange comments last week, in which he called out the front office and some of his teammates while questioning his own mortality. The team's decision to slot Clay Buchholz at the back of the rotation, the ongoing battle in center field, a catching prospect getting arrested for being an asshole and more is touched upon as well. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex contemplates the possibility of Stephen Drew taking Jose Iglesias' job for the second straight year. How sweet that would be. It's the time of year when all the prospect lists start hitting the press, and we took a look at two of them: MLB.com's top 100 and the top 101 from Baseball Prospectus. What followed was a look at the differences between the two. MLB had four Royals listed; BP had seven. Why? We talked about the differing perspectives we saw in the building of the lists and talked about some of the intriguing players like Sean Manaea, who both sides liked (but only one ranked), and Yordano Ventura, who both liked, but BP *really* liked. We also did a brief look around the state of the AL Central and discussed ZiPS projections and the Clay Davenport 77-85 projection for the Royals 2014 record that everyone's been bringing up. Along with those, we talked about the relative importance of stats in analyzing the game, and how projections can answer some questions, and don't answer others. Then, we looked at the starting pitching market in the wake of the Mashiro Tanaka signing with New York and Matt Garza's deal with the Brewers, including a comparison of Ervin Santana and Ubaldo Jimenez and what their value really is now and what it might be in the future. We also included a brief discussion of the value of contracts. Finally, we wrapped up with a few little odds and ends - Jon Rauch signed a minor league deal, Justin Maxwell settled on an arbitration amount, FanFest is coming again (and listen to the episode to see how you can win some money to Kelly's Westport Inn) - before digging into Royalman's quest to reach the MLB Fan Cave and finishing with some words about Mike MacFarlane and Bob Kendrick making it into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame.

Inside this edition of "Without a Curse," Alex talks about the Red Sox' important series victory over the Diamondbacks last weekend, as they keep pace with the Rays in the AL East. Jake Peavy tossed seven spectacular innings in his Red Sox debut, and Alex says there is no reason why Peavy can't be a big contributor for this team down the stretch. The Red Sox, according to John Tomase of The Boston Herald, are 4-15 against elite pitching in the American League. One way to beat good pitching is by countering with good pitching, and Peavy is certainly a good pitcher. Alex also discusses the Red Sox' amazing comeback win on Thursday night, and says how a great approach at the plate and great depth are the main reasons why the Red Sox have had so many walk-off victories this season. John Henry purchased The Boston Globe for $70 million late last week, and Alex talks about how the Globe sports department will be perceived now that Henry is the boss on Morrissey Blvd. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex takes a closer look at the AL East standings, and shares a startling statistic on David Price's recent dominance. Startling, by the way, is a word one could use to describe Matt Garza's sexism... Alex leads off the show discussing the pending Biogenesis suspensions, and how though Alex Rodriguez is far from a victim, it's apparent MLB and the Yankees have a vendetta against him. A-Rod isn't the only player who will be suspended tomorrow, as reportedly up to 12 others will be handed punishments. Jhonny Peralta and Nelson Cruz are both pending free agents, and are on teams with postseason aspirations. It will be fascinating to see if they appeal their suspensions, or serve them right away. There are consequences to both decisions.

Alex begins this edition of "Without a Curse" by talking about the sagas involving Ryan Braun and Alex Rodriguez. Braun was suspended for 65 games after accepting a plea deal this week. Alex says Braun accepted the deal because it was the best scenario for him, even though he has now given legitimacy to Tony Bosch's testimony. MLB nailed Braun, and is now preparing to nail others tied to Biogenesis. There has been a lot of vitriol spewed at Braun from players across the league, and Alex says it shows that even though players will accept peers who aren't forthcoming about their steroid use, they won't accept outright liars. Braun is an outright liar, and tried to throw the sample collector, Dino Laurenzi Jr., under the bus in 2012 when he appealed his positive drug test. He's a snake. Speaking of snakes, A-Rod continues to engross himself in a PR battle with the Yankees and Brian Cashman. A-Rod sought an unsolicited 2nd opinion on his most recent quadricep strain from Dr. Michael Gross in New Jersey, and then courted Gross to appear on WFAN to dispute the Yankees' diagnosis. According to the CBA, a player can't seek a 2nd opinion without his team's consent. The Yankees may file a grievance against A-Rod in another attempt to void his contract. It was also reported this week that A-Rod is potentially facing a lifetime ban from baseball because of the litany of evidence they have against him in the Biogenesis case. If A-Rod is suspended for life, the Yankees don't have to pay the remainder of his albatross of a contract. Could the Yankees have been supplying MLB with medical information to help build its case against A-Rod? It's a conspiracy theory that isn't all that crazy. In terms of Red Sox news, Alex recaps the past three games against the Rays. Matt Moore and David Price have shut down the Red Sox, as the Rays seemed primed for a 2nd half run. Dustin Pedroia and the Red Sox finalized an eight year $110 million contract extension on Wednesday, a move which Alex is ecstatic bout. Long-term contracts are intrinsically risky, but Pedroia is worth taking the risk on. The prognosis is not good on Clay Buchholz, who will likely be out until September. Alex talks about how much criticism should be levied against Buchholz, and whether Red Sox fans should be disappointed at his lack of durability. With Buchholz out, the Red Sox have been rumored to be interested in White Sox starter Jake Peavy. If Will Middlebrooks is traded for Peavy, it says the Red Sox have big plans for top prospect Xander Bogaerts ... this season. In the "Around the League" segment, Alex analyzes the AL East standings, and the Orioles' acquisition of Francisco Rodriguez. The Rangers also made a big trade this week, acquiring Matt Garza from the Cub. Alex tells you which team won the deal, and if the Rangers are now suited to make a run at the A's in the AL West.
