The Hall of Famer That Wasn't: Bobby Abreu Description: In this episode of Kenny The Sports Guy Podcast, we take a deep dive into the career of one of baseball's most underrated stars — Bobby Abreu. With over 2,400 hits, nearly 300 home runs, and a rare blend of power, speed, and plate discipline, Abreu built a resume worthy of Cooperstown. So why has he struggled to gain traction among Hall of Fame voters? I break down his numbers, his impact on the game, and why history might be underrating one of MLB's most consistent performers. Was Bobby Abreu truly a Hall of Famer — and if not, what went wrong? Tune in and find out.

Send us a textDan was not the voter who didn't vote for Ichiro. But we all wish we knew who it was! For the 3rd straight year Dan joined the podcast to discuss the final HOF voting.  He voted for Bobby Abreu, Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones, Manny Ramirez, Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Ichiro Suzuki, Chase Utley, and Billy Wagner. 9 in total and we discussed why he didn't vote for one more - could have been King Felix, Andy Pettitte, or Dustin Pedrioia or even David Wright! We also discussed allowing voters to vote for more candidates than the current limit of 10. Gordon suggested that if a player got one vote in his first year on the ballot he could stay on for year 2 and then be subject to some sort of minimum percentage - 5% or even less. As #Mets fans we are thrilled that Billy Wagner finally made it. New Yorkers will be traveling to Cooperstown this coming July to celebrate CC and Billy. Dan is working on a couple of new articles including an upcoming one on Babe Dahlgren's foray into video analysis more than 70 years ago! Please subscribe to our podcast and thanks for listening! The Phillies don't win the 2008 World Series without Cole Hamels. He went 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in five postseason starts, winning World Series MVP and NLCS MVP honors in the process. He lived up to the hype as the 17th overall pick in the 2002 Draft, giving the Phillies a homegrown ace they desperately needed for years.  Is Hamels one of the greatest Phillies ever? Absolutely. The old-school stats say so, but so do the new ones. Hamels ranks 11th all-time in WAR by a Phillies player, according to Baseball Reference, just behind Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu, and just ahead of Chuck Klein and Curt Schilling. Hamels shared his favorite Phillies memories with Ruben, Jim and Todd before his June 21, 2024, retirement ceremony at Citizens Bank Park. He talked about getting drafted by the Phillies, the franchise's glorious run from 2007-11, drilling Bryce Harper with a pitch in 2012, throwing a no-hitter in his final Phillies start in 2015, and so much more. The Philadelphia Eagles are losing momentum. It wasn't just the embarrassing loss against the 49'ers at home. We've been seeing regression coming from the offense and other areas of this team as they face down a critical game this weekend against the Cowboys. Ed Kracz from FanNation's Eagles Today joined us for a discussion about some Eagles trends and what we might expect from this team in the future. But first, we dove into a lengthy conversation about the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot this season and how Chase Utley is finally appearing on it. Aside from Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Bobby Abreu, and Billy Wagner are all former Phillies poised to get some votes this year. (approx. 10:55)We then discussed how fun it has been to watch this Flyers team during the early part of their rebuild. It's been an interesting season for sure. (approx. 28:30)From there, we reflected on the Union's 2023 season and how there was a lot of disappointment in various aspects of how the season ended, as well as what may happen in 2024. (approx. 37:25)We then talked about the College Football Playoff, how Florida State was snubbed, and how the college football machine is altering the game. (approx. 44:20)What we threw down on the Table this week was an in-depth discussion and interview with Ed Kracz from Eagles Today about how various aspects of the Eagles team has regressed. How may Shaq Leonard contribute to the defense in the coming weeks? Is Jalen Hurts' knee injury why this offense has been stale? The secondary has been incredibly inconsistent - so what's the reason for this? Plus much more within this discussion! Yesterday, Pete Alonso had the 186th game in Mets history with a home run and a caught stealing. It was the first time that Alonso has done this in his career, which makes him the 91st Met to post such a performance. No Met had homered and been caught stealing in a game since last July 4, when Brandon Nimmo did it in Cincinnati. Nimmo has had three of these games, and the Mets have won nine of the 10 games since the start of the 2019 season where they had a player go deep but also get nabbed. The somewhat dubious team record for a single-season is four, set by Lee Mazzilli in 1978 and matched by Darryl Strawberry in 1985. Strawberry is the franchise leader at 16 games with a homer and caught stealing, with Mazzilli at 11, followed by Howard Johnson at eight, José Reyes at 7, and David Wright and Joel Youngblood at five apiece. What Alonso would like to have done yesterday is have his seventh career game with a homer and a steal, which would snap a tie with Lenny Dykstra and tie Lindor and Cleon Jones for 11th on the Mets' franchise list. Ahead of them, and more in Lindor's sights in the years to come? Strawberry's team record of 35 should be safe for a while, with Johnson (28), Reyes (27), and Wright (20) all far above the rest of the field. Then it's Carlos Beltrán and Mookie Wilson (13), Kevin McReynolds (12), Tommie Agee (10), and Mike Cameron and Dave Kingman (9).According to Stathead, the career leaders for homer/steal games are…* Barry Bonds, 102* Rickey Henderson, 87* Álex Rodriguez, 65* Bobby Bonds, 61* Joe Morgan, 60* Willie Mays, 58* César Cedeño, 48* Beltran, 44* Bobby Abreu, 43* Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Alfonso Soriano, Larry Walker, 42* Strawberry, 40And to get back where we started, the leaders for homer/caught stealing combo games…* Mays, 29* Babe Ruth, 27* Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, 25* Bobby Bonds, 24* Henderson, 22* José Canseco, 21* Cedeño, Lou Gehrig, Mike Schmidt, 20* Morgan, Gary Sheffield, Strawberry, 19One more note on Alonso. As he tied Keith Hernandez on the Mets' career RBI list, he also tied Mex in homer/caught stealing games. It was also against the Pirates, but at Three Rivers Stadium, on April 21, 1987: Hernandez was caught stealing by the battery of Brian Fisher and Junior Ortiz, but took Bob Walk deep for an insurance run that helped lessen the impact of Barry Bonds' three-run homer off Bob Ojeda in the eighth. Hernandez singled and scored in the ninth, and Jesse Orosco closed out the 9-6 contest, getting Bobby Bonilla to ground out to end it with Bonds, who would have represented the tying run had he gotten the chance to hit, left on deck. Ryan Pacatte joins Jack Vita to discuss and break down the 2023 Baseball Hall of Fame voting. Former St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Scott Rolen was voted into the Hall of Fame Tuesday by the BBWAA. No other players were voted in to be inducted, although Colorado Rockies great Todd Helton (72.2%) and closer Billy Wagner (68.1%) came close, and are on track to enter the Hall soon. 2000 National League MVP Jeff Kent was denied entry for the tenth time, and now falls off the writer's ballot. He will have a chance to enter the Hall of Fame through one of the veterans committees. Ryan and Jack discuss the Hall of Fame cases for players that did not receive induction in 2023, including Helton, Wagner, Kent, Andruw Jones, Gary Sheffield, Carlos Beltran, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Andy Pettitte and Bobby Abreu. Later on, Ryan and Jack discuss the latest news stories from the MLB offseason, including Major League Baseball's investigation into Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Mike Clevinger and a big trade between the Minnesota Twins and Miami Marlins, where the Marlins sent Pablo Lopez and prospects to Minnesota in exchange for 2022 AL batting champion Luis Arraez. This weekend will be exciting because we'll get to donate our first bunch of winter hats from our Hot Stove, Warm Welcome drive, as State Senator Jessica Ramos hosts a holiday lunch for newly-arrived families here in Queens. The drive continues, as we'll donate a hat for every hoodie we sell this month in our shop. Obviously, we wanted to get hats in time for this lunch, so we ordered some earlier in the month, and we'll do another order at the end of the month, when there will still be winter to go!By Jesse SpectorSome reads heading into the weekend…It's brutal to have lost both Mike Leach and Grant Wahl in the past week. Posthumous memorials at Channel 6 and from Grant's wife Céline Gounder are each things to read while holding the sadness, while happier memories can be found in Spencer Hall's 2011 boat outing with Leach, and Wahl's introduction of an Ohio teenager named LeBron James to the world. This isn't a read, but an interesting and deep explanation of the impact of Leach's Air Raid offense.I always get a kick out of being reminded that the English soccer club Derby County used to play at The Baseball Ground. As Twitter continues to burn down and the CEO dances about with open cans of gasoline, all are welcome on our Discord.Free buses for NYC? At my day job, we're deep into redesigning the bus network already. Go for it.And back here in Queens, I have been to the Boca Juniors restaurant and I'm glad it survived the past two years and now gets to be the center of Argentina fandom in the city. And glad that they got the shine here from Hell Gate. The Mets signed former Brewers catcher and 2021 All-Star Omar Narváez, which means that someone is leaving because that's too many catchers. In his major league debut, back in 2016, one of the White Sox pitchers Narváez caught was Tommy Kahnle, who's just returned to the Yankees. Kahnle appeared again in Narváez's next game, and then his third game was a Carlos Rodón start… and now Rodón is coming to the Yankees, too. Game number four for Narváez? He caught new Mets starter José Quintana. And then it continues. David Robertson, who made his major league debut at Shea Stadium… …got the save in Narváez's fifth career game, a Rodón start. It took nearly a month, until his eighth game, for Narváez to not catch someone who will be with a New York team next year, unless Chris Sale or Jacob Turner somehow winds up here.As Narváez and all those pitchers get ready to come to (or return to) the Big Apple, old friend Noah Syndergaard returned to Los Angeles, where he's set to become the fifth player in history to appear for the Mets, Angels, Phillies, and Dodgers. He'll join Dick Stuart, Dennis Cook, Dennis Springer, and Bobby Abreu in that oddball club, and be the first to take the New York-Anaheim-Philly-LA path to it.I hadn't realized that Stuart, the man best known for his awesome nickname, Dr. Strangeglove, even played for the Mets, let alone the Angels, Phillies, and Dodgers. I knew him as a Pirates slugger, part of the 1960 World Series team… and I may have known but forgotten that his best season was with the 1963 Red Sox, when he led the American League in total bases and runs batted in.After a less impressive, but still really good (.811 OPS, 33 homers) season in 1964, the Red Sox traded Stuart to the Phillies for Dennis Bennett, himself a future Met in 1967 when the Sox sent him here for Al Yates. And that's when Stuart began the Syndergaard speedrun, playing a replacement-level season with the 1965 Phillies. They traded him to the Mets in February of 1966 for Wayne Graham, Bobby Klaus, and Jimmie Schaffer.Stuart played 31 games as a Met, with one of his four homers coming off 1969 Met Don Cardwell… as well as one off his former Phillies teammate Chris Short. After the Mets released Stuart, he caught on with the Dodgers… and hit his first homer in L.A. off the very same Chris Short.Short was a really good pitcher, but not at the level of the last guy that Stuart tagged for a dinger with the Dodgers, Steve Carlton. After two years with the Taiyo Whales in Japan, where he hit a combined 49 homers, Stuart came back to the States and hit one last tater for the Angels, off Tommy John.In Stuart's rookie season, 1958, he homered off Don Drysdale, Warren Spahn, and Robin Roberts. He took Sandy Koufax deep five times, tied with Cardwell, Johnny Podres, and Stan Williams for his most against any pitcher.Taiyo Whales is a new team name for me… they're now the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, having moved from Kawasaki to Yokohama in 1978 and briefly being the Yokohama Taiyo Whales before doing a Tennessee Oilers kind of thing. They had a pretty cool song, if not Beatles level. (Hope you're enjoying We Can Pod It Out!)The Tennssee Oilers… also had a song. That one isn't just not Beatles level, it's not Shitty Beatles level. Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty calls in (not duck calls in) from Louisiana to talk about his new book, The Theft Of America’s Soul: Blowing The Lid Off The Lies That Are Destroying Our Country (which released February 5, 2019). The book is described as “Writing with captivating storytelling and unflinching honesty, Phil shows how to make America a God-honoring nation once more: by exposing the ten central lies that rule our day for what they are, and taking up the ten truths that will bring peace of mind, harmony, and prosperity back to our country.” Much of the book stems from Phil’s personal life and testimony, so while it is written boldly, the book also has a humble vulnerability about it. (For fun, Phil also gives a little insight into the famous duck calls he has developed over the years). Scott Brandreth, Director of Promotions for the Phillies kicks off the show to chat about Bobby Abreu’s election this week to the Phillies’ Wall of Fame, upcoming promotions honoring 2008 World Series champions Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley & Ryan Howard, and about 2019 season ticket possibilities (details at www.phillies.com).
