Interview: Scoring Netflix's ‘Exploding Kittens' with Composers Jina An & Shirley Song

Welcome to a new Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast. This week I'm chatting with Jina An & Shirley Song, the composers behind Netflix's brilliant adult animated series ‘Exploding Kittens'.If you haven't yet caught ‘Exploding Kittens', the series is inspired by the beloved card game from Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal webcomic, Elan Lee, and Shane Small. After a meeting in heaven, there is a general consensus that Earth sucks, so God (voiced by the wonderful Tom Ellis from ‘Lucifer') gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He's trapped in the body of a chubby house cat. As part of Godcat's rehabilitation, he moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. And to top it off, Godcat's next-door neighbour, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist. It is brilliant, hilariously funny, and Season 1 is all on Netflix right now!Jina and Shirley have been composing together pretty much since college, and were tasked with creating a soundtrack that captures the show's explosive energy. This also involved them touching on a huge array of musical genres like 8-bit nostalgia, energetic Cajun flair, heavy metal rock, and both choral and orchestral scores to bring the madcap adventures and quirky characters to life.Outside of ‘Exploding Kittens', the duo are also known for working on the beloved Netflix series ‘XO, Kitty', and have a number of other projects coming up which we talk about in the interview.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Welcome to the new series of "Mobile Must Plays" where we look at Mobile games new and old that are the best downloads for your device.  It seems like there are millions of games available for your device, so we are playing them all and picking out the best ones for you. This time, it's Exploding Kittens. Based on the popular card game "Exploding Kittens" is now a popular mobile app game available on android. The card game was the most-funded game in Kickstarter history and was created by Elan Lee, Mathew Inman and Shane Small. The basic idea of the game is that people draw cards in a Russian roulette type format until someone draws an "Exploding Kitten" that knocks them out of the game unless they can counter it with a defuse cards, like a laser pointer, belly rub or catnip sandwiches. The other cards in the game are used to move around and avoid the potential exploding kittens in an almost UNO way. The game is a paid app but will only set you back around $2.89 Australian. The Android version of the game perfectly captures the spirit of the original card game and even adds a little more in the form of extra cards exclusive to the app. The quirky cat-based artwork is really fun and drawn by "The Oatmeal" artist Matthew Inman who is just a genius. The main bit of advice for new players is to give it time, you may not master it on your first or second attempt, but when you finally get it you won't want to put it down. It’s best played in multiplayer with your friends, but there’s a singleplayer mode to get loads of practice in before you do. Watch this gameplay walkthrough to see it for yourself

That's the position The Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe (TSCW) found themselves in by the summer of 2012. But don't worry, there's a happy ending. In this second of a two-part interview, Jane Alcorn (TSCW president) explains how they turned things around. The secret ingredient: enlist the aide of Matthew Inman, creator of the website The Oatmeal. In the whirlwind of events that followed, offers of help poured in and TSCW was able to meet all their goals. And then the hard work began. Jane recounts it all and lays out future plans for the site and for Nikola Tesla's legacy of scientific innovation. Remember to check the TSCW website for ways that you can get involved. And stay tuned as our Tesla month continues. Next week on the podcast we interview filmmaker Joe Sikorski on his Tesla/Wardenclyffe documentary Tower to the People. http://wwwx.dowling.edu/library/new/JaneAlcorn2.mp3 Stream in the player above or download audio. For the first time ever, we allow other living beings to sit behind the mics with us and talk about... whatever it is that we talk about. First, a real live Harpy tells us about her disgusting cloaca, and then something called a Gobbo talks about Exploding Kittens. It's a real weird episode. Intro Gag: Comin' to ya' live from the Birdcave, I'm Katie Grzesiak and with me as always is my parrot sidekick, Tiberius, and this is the Mildly Alarming Podcast. Episode 79: *Parrot Noise* Segment 1: Cloacae! You can find all the information you ever wanted about SlugFest Games' Red Dragon Inn right here! You can also check out the Good Job Brain podcast at www.goodjobbrain.com. FARTIS (the name of their non-copyright-infringing Doctor Who-inspired time machine) stands for Fancy And Ridiculous Time Interloper System. Episode Sponsor: Mr. Pippy's Skin Drying Cream Segment 2: Exploding Kittens Here, we talk with guest Gobbo about the recently-released Kickstarter monstrosity, Exploding Kittens. With art and comedyjokes by The Oatmeal's Matthew Inman, Exploding Kittens pretty much blew up the Internet Hype Machine. Now the game is actually out for you to play, and we played it. Listen to find out whether we loved it or hated it or thought it was OK! Greg Wohlwend developed the popular game Threes with his colleague Asher Vollmer. Greg is a games illustrator and designer who was part of teams that made Hundreds, Gasketball, Solipskier, and Ridiculous Fishing. Threes is his breakout game — and has inspired lots of admiration, frustration, and imitation. He and I talk in this episode about the joy of success, the burden of being independent, and the problems with parasites. Greg wrote this post to the hobbyist on the ledge. Greg designed the logo for Indie Game: The Movie; the creators of that film are two-time guests on the show, first in December 2012, and then a year later for a check in. The money in Minecraft is in YouTube videos of people playing through levels. We ran a story about this in The Magazine. The Scratch programming language leads to the Pencil programming language which led to JavaScript for my older son. CoderDojo uses Scratch to mentor kids in programming. Max Temkin baited a Los Angeles Times reporter who wrote an uninformed piece about the Threes ripoff 2048. The extended account of Threes development reveals the exhaustive and useful process of iteration, testing, and killing one's darlings. The Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast had a very nice discussion at the end of an episode where one panelist recommend 2048, and another explained kindly that Threes was the original and the thing to which one graduates as it's tougher. (Listen around minute 37.) Greg recommends the Indomie brand of ramen.

You don't look like a runner

## We have had listener feedback! * Jenny says she gets what we're doing but it's not really for her. She also told us about the ITV documentary _[Trouble in Poundland](http://www.itv.com/presscentre/ep1week25/trouble-poundland) _ and the fauxblerone—[Poundland's own brand Brexit Toblerone](http://www.mirror.co.uk/money/poundland-selling-pre-brexit-toblerones-10647376). * Steve tweeted us to recommend _What I Talk About When I Talk About Running_ by Haruki Marukami; “it helped me think about running in a new way”, he told us. Nick and Jon have committed to reading it soon and dedicating some airtime to chatting through it. Why not [buy a copy](http://amzn.to/2uZ5nHD) now so you can join in (it's also available on Audible, so you can think about it while running). * The book about running Matthew Inman (of _The Oatmeal_ ) is called _[The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances](http://amzn.to/2uudFpm)_ * This is what [Jon did on his stag do](http://monopolyboardpubcrawl.com)—but did he finish it? * Ben says [_Wild_ by Cheryl Strayed](http://amzn.to/2urO9zu) is a way better book about the PCT than the terrible book Nick has been reading ( _[The Last Englishman](http://amzn.to/2sXilB7)_ , see [episode 2](http://runnerpod.com/e/3549fb61ce9574L/)). Ben knows books well—he runs a [newsletter](http://tinyletter.com/benjiw) for reading recommendations and it's really nice to get each month. * Nick and Jon have been [arguing about who loves High Fidelity the most](https://twitter.com/jonhickman/status/888997573389942785). * Nick recommends _Accidental Billionaires_ on Audible (or [as a book](http://amzn.to/2vXwiQB)). * If you have any feedback for us please tweet us @[runnerpod](http://www.twitter.com/runnerpod) or email ladsladslads@runnerpod.com ## Jon's marathon training Jon is now on week 12 of a [16 week plan](https://www.bupa.co.uk/health-information/directory/r/running-programme-marathon), that means the marathon is 4 weeks from Sunday and he's about to hit the tail end of training. Here's what's happened since last time: * The second 15 miler in week 11 was nice * The big 18 Miler in week 10 was less so. Perhaps that was down to [poor preparation](https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10159039717785506&set=a.10150247752580506.472175.899120505&type=3&theater)? * Jon's been swimming again—but is 750m in 30 minutes any good? * Treadmills are the worst This week is mostly shorter runs, nothing over an hour, a mix of speed and easy, then a suggested half marathon race or a lonely 13 miler… but what is the point of the 10 minute run on Saturday? ## Nick's friends are better than yours Nick's controversially been on holiday. He's also: * Taken up skateboarding with hilarious results. * Run to and from the gym. It's a thing. * Potentially the weakest link in a circle of really talented friends. This is his [mate's photography website](https://www.simoncleggphotography.com). That guy can whittle pens out of old skateboards ¯_(ツ)_/¯ Here's a link to [the interview between Aziz Ansari and Fisher Stevens](http://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/15/arts/television/aziz-ansari-on-acting-race-and-hollywood.html?_r=0&module=ArrowsNav&contentCollection=Television&action=keypress®ion=FixedLeft&pgtype=article) where they discuss Fisher blacking up to play an Indian scientist in the _Short Circuit_ movies. And that's us for another episode. Thanks to [Podiant](http://www.podiant.co)—professional-grade podcast hosting at a price you choose—for supporting You Don't Look Like a Runner.
