“We can be the regeneration generation, and our food system is the mechanism to do that..” —Ryland Engelhart   The world is changing. The way we live, the way we work, the way we interact with each other and with the world around us - it's all changing. And we are the generation that is leading this change.   We are the generation that is breaking down barriers and opening up new possibilities. We are the generation that is using our creativity and our passion to build a better future. We are the generation that can help our planet heal. We are the regeneration generation!    And that starts with transforming our food system. The food industry has been one of the biggest contributors to our planet's deteriorating condition— but we can change all that. And that change is happening right now!    Kiss The Ground, is a documentary that provides a clear picture of how big our impact is on our environment and reveals a sound and practical solution to climate change. Co-founded by Ryland Engelhart, its nonprofit partner, Kiss The Ground is actively leading the citizens of the earth to the possibilities of regeneration.    Tune in to this week's episode as Justine and Ryland discuss how we can turn food into a transformational experience, how culture and emotions are inseparable aspects of food, what it means to be committed but not attached, how knowing our farmers can help us get a wider perspective on regeneration, and how we can become better stewards of the earth.  Meet Ryland: Ryland Engelhart co-founded Kiss the Ground in 2013 and plays a leadership role in the organization as the Chief Mission Officer; he is a producer of the Kiss the Ground film released on Netflix and host of the Kiss the Ground Podcast. As a 15-year entrepreneur, he is also the co-owner and prior Mission Fulfillment Officer of the nationally recognized plant-based restaurants Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre, located in Southern California, and co-creator of the documentary film, May I Be Frank.    He is a passionate speaker on the topics of sacred commerce and regenerative agriculture, tools for building community, food is medicine, and the practice of love and gratitude. Ryland is also a dedicated husband and father and lives on a 17-acre regenerative organic farm in Fillmore, CA, where he is learning to practice what he preaches.   Facebook Twitter Instagram  Linkedin   Connect with Kiss The Ground  Website Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn YouTube   Connect with Café Gratitude Website Facebook Instagram   Connect with Gracias Madre Website Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 01:48 The Matrix of Life 06:17 Food and Games and Life   12:11 Cafe Gratitude to Gracias Madre 17:08 Committed But Not Attached  20:45 The Regeneration Generation 23:30 Be an Advocate for Soil Health

“The foundation of all that we are is food and water." -Mollie Engelhart We're used to the idea that we live in a time for sustainability. While "sustainable" agriculture has certainly played its part in making us more aware of the impact of our actions on the environment, it hasn't done much to actually improve the situation. And with climate change getting worse every day, it's clear that something needs to change. We need to stop obsessing over how much food we grow and start paying attention to how much food we regenerate. Regenerative agriculture can strengthen our food system beyond the "sustainable" level and help us fulfill our role as stewards of the land. In this episode, Justine sits with Mollie Engelhart, the Executive Chef at Sage Plant Based Bistro and Brewery. Working in the kitchen for so long has helped Mollie to see how much food waste is affecting the environment. Although she was doing her part to solve this, she knew she can do more. That's when Sow a Heart was born, an organic farm that focuses on regenerative agriculture. All the food waste from their restaurants and others were brought to the farm to help regenerate soil health, in turn, giving them more nutrient-dense produce. But the farm was not only used to grow crops, Mollie's heart also inclined her to build a sanctuary for rescued animals.    Listen in as Justine and Mollie talk about how much greenhouse gas is produced from food waste, how regenerative farming is helping the environment and humans thrive, the qualities of a successful entrepreneur, why we should not be afraid to fail, and how much work is needed to succeed.  Meet Mollie:  Plant-based Chef, Mollie Engelhart and her husband own Sow a Heart, a 17-acre organic farm that supports regenerative agriculture and takes care of rescue animals. Besides running farm operations, Mollie and her husband also manage their plant-based restaurant, Sage Plant Based Bistro and Brewery. Mollie is also a board member of Kiss the Ground, the award-winning producer of “May I Be Frank”, a freedom fighter, and a mother of 3.   Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn YouTube   Connect with Sow A Heart: Website Facebook Instagram   Connect with Sage Plant Based Bistro and Brewery: Website Facebook Instagram Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 01:01 Food Waste and Greenhouse Gases 04:05 This is No Longer About Sustainability 08:02 Not Afraid to Fail 11:06 Success is Work

Episode SummaryIn this episode, Frank talks about his lifelong journey through addiction and what he's learned through the trials of recovery. He talks about his documentary “May I Be Frank?” and the impact that it has had on his life.  “A commitment is a spiritual experience” Frank FerranteHighlightsFrank doesn't blame his addiction on anybody but himself, but he does believe that his tough childhood helped “clear the runway” and perhaps made him more susceptible to addiction.A problem for people staying on path is that they believe that there is one place of ultimate nirvana where everything is ok all the time. This is a false belief and causes stress and setbacks.Frank found the Alcoholics Anonymous group incredibly supportive. Frank doesn't believe that not drinking or using drugs is the hardest part of the process. Making amends and restitution are much more difficult.Drugs and alcohol are symptomatic of a deeper underlying condition. It is not about getting rid of the ego. It is about learning how to make peace with it.People must go through an interval of discomfort to have a transformative experience. For the documentary “May I Be Frank?”, Frank ate all vegan and raw food for 42 days. After the 42-day experiment, the help that Frank had all left him, and it was tough to continue.Frank was later treated for Hepatitis C and was given opiates. He started to fall back into his old patterns and went through a dark patch where he almost died and had to go to rehab. He then committed to a healthier diet and began to work out and lost 125 lbs.Frank has been sober for over 15 years. One of Frank's favorite things about having done the film is how open it makes others to speak with him openly and share their stories.Relevant LinksMay I Be Frank - Movie May I Be Frank - Book Outwitting The Devil - Napoleon Hill Gabor Mate - The Power of Addiction - Ted Talk

He is also a co-creator of the award-winning, transformational documentary film, “May I Be Frank.” Ryland joins Sustainable Nation to discuss: The state of regenerative agriculture The power of storytelling in sustainability Corporate actions on regenerative agriculture Advice and recommendations for sustainability leaders Ryland's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? I think we've heard this before, but it really is about building, strong, real, authentic, not transactional relationships. Deep, meaningful, connected relationships, and building coalition and community, community around your ideas and your initiative, is the way to be successful. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm excited that regeneration and the term regeneration is really eclipsing the notion of sustainability, which again, we admire sustainability and we oftentimes say that sustainability is ahead of its time because we need to regenerate the broken systems before we can sustain them. So I'm grateful and I'm excited about that regeneration, that the principles of regeneration are becoming so widely understood. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? Project Drawdown. The hundred most substantive solutions to reversing global warming by Paul Hawken and others. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Well, it sounds kind of trite, but I've loved becoming an organization that operates with Slack as a team communication tool. It's been really, really effective and powerful. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you, the work of Kiss, the Ground and the movie? Please go to kisstheground.com and find your path. It's kind of our lowest barrier to entry way to participate in the regenerative movement is go to kiss the ground and find your path. It's a little genie or search wizard that essentially you can put your interests in, and it kicks you out a couple actions and places to take next steps to support the regenerative movement. And so I recommend to go to kiss the ground, and find your path. And then you can follow me @lovebeingryland, that's my Instagram handle. And then @kisstheground is our Instagram handle. And then we have an amazing, amazing course. It's like a masterclass course for anyone who's into sustainability and wants to really be whip smart in this arena. It's about eight hours of content that you can take over time. And it really has you be a regenerative agriculture expert and advocate coming out the other end and you can really be a powerful voice for the movement. And then lastly you can see the film Kiss the Ground on Netflix. It's available in 40 countries and 25 languages. And if you can't go to Netflix, you can go right to kissthegroundmovie.com and it's on there for a dollar on Vimeo.

This week, I'm excited to welcome Ryland Engelhart. He is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Kiss the Ground. He speaks on sacred commerce, tools for building community, and regeneration and is the host of Kiss the Ground's "We Can Do This Podcast." Questions asked during our conversation: How do you define regenerative vs degenerative agriculture? Is it too late to be considering sustainability? How important are animals in the soil health conversation? https://180nutrition.com.au/ This week, I'm excited to welcome Ryland Engelhart. Ryland is an entrepreneur, a restaurateur and social activist who co-owns the super popular plant-based restaurants Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre. He's also co-founder of Kiss the Ground, a nonprofit increasing social awareness and educating millions of people about the extraordinary benefits of healthy soil. In this episode, we discuss the fundamentals of regenerative agriculture and discover what we can all do at a community level to cultivate global regeneration. Over to Ryland. Hey guys, this is Stu from 180 Nutrition, and I am delighted to welcome Ryland Engelhart to the podcast, Ryland, how are you? Ryland 00:01:50 I'm feeling great. Thank you so much. It's been great to get to know you a little bit before we jumped in here. And yeah, grateful to share love and information. That was kind of my mom's declaration of what there was to do in life, was to share love and information. And so it's always a delight to be invited to speak on a podcast, to share with new audience about what I've learned over my life that could potentially be helpful for others. Stu 00:02:23 That is awesome. Well, that is what we are super excited about diving into today. But first up, for all of our listeners that might not be familiar with you or your work, I would love it if you could just tell us a little bit about yourself and your background, please. Ryland 00:02:35 Okay, beautiful. So professionally over the last 15 years, I've been working within a family business, a restaurant business on the West Coast of the United States called Love Serve Remember. It is a management company that oversees two different restaurant chains. One is called Gracias Madre, which is organic plant-based Mexican food. And one is called Cafe Gratitude, which I know many Australians who have come and visited California have come to Cafe Gratitude. You guys have been a big international group that has been big fans of Cafe Gratitude. And really, yeah, we've been a family of, I would say, entrepreneurs really driving health and wellness and plant-based lifestyle. 15 years ago when we started the Cafe Gratitude, there was no such thing in the general lexicon of understanding of what cold brewed coffee was. No one was eating kale. Quinoa was not pronounceable. And almond milk, there wasn't almond milk on the shelf. It was just a completely different time. And we had the amazing opportunity of understanding as a family. We had been vegetarian for most of our lives and really got into healthy, organic food, and wanted to provide that for people through our restaurants. But I would say the bigger mission of our restaurant company was about spreading the consciousness of gratitude and really, how do we create a public domain, a business, a commercial venture, where we invite people in to that space, and we not only nourish them with healthy food, but we actually also curate healthy or meaningful or purposeful or grateful conversations. And so really, the food was the kind of carrot to get people in the door, but really we were more after having people be centered in a grateful place. What we saw was when you're grateful, you are more present and you're also more loving and kind. When you're full of great, you're not trying to get stuff from the world. You're not trying to be a consumer, more and more and more for me, me, me, because you're in gratefulness. You're in the spirit of gratitude. So that was a a long intro, but yeah, the Cafe Gratitude's been around for 15 years. We have restaurants in the Bay Area on San Diego and in Los Angeles. So that's kind of been my professional world for the last 15 years. And then I ventured out about seven years ago actually to start my own nonprofit called Kiss the Ground, which is kind of my current passion and focus. And really, that's focused on education advocacy for healthy soil and regenerative agriculture as the basis of a healthy civilization. And that if we really trace back a lot of the problems that humanity faces, it comes back to a destruction of the ecology that serves all of life coming from that earth, and that if we could get our relationship to soil, right and if we could heal our soils, we could actually heal a lot of our human health challenges. We could heal a lot of our ecological degradation. The big kind of aha moment was, oh my God, there's actually a solution to how we can reverse and bring the carbon out of the atmosphere that's causing climate change. We can actually draw enough carbon down into the soil, such that it actually provides something of value in soil so it makes a problem into a solution when that carbon comes out of the air into the soil, and that everyone who eats could be potentially catalyzing that movement. So I started a nonprofit called Kiss the Ground to really advocate and educate around regenerative agriculture so that we could scale that up to what the new norm in agriculture. Because looking long and hard at the future of humanity on planet earth, I didn't really see how the current sustainability framework or model could actually make a difference. It just seemed like kind of ideas that were less harmful that made us feel good in the now moment, but really weren't actually going to make the difference that makes the difference, and that we were just going to slowly drive off a cliff. Now I have a son who's two, and so it makes me even more passionate about how we can heal and regenerate this beautiful, precious one of a kind planet in the universe. “Love is not something found in a person, place or thing. It’s something that is ever present in our hearts and always available as a gift and it costs nothing to share it.”Ryland EngelhartLast week we explored the world of regenerative farming, soil health and biodiversity as critical levers to improve human health. Consolidate food security. Drawdown carbon. And backpedal climate change.Today we expound on that theme with entrepreneur, restauranteur and social activist Ryland Engelhart.Ryland is the ‘Mission Fulfillment Officer' and co-owner of Café Gratitude and Gracias Madre, a family owned group of legendary plant-based restaurants. The epicenter of California vegan cuisine & culture, it's a platform he uses to not only feed people amazing food but to cultivate community — and most importantly, inspire more gratitude into our lives and culture. In addition, Ryland is a speaker and passionate advocate for sacred commerce, community building and regenerative farming principles, which he supports as co-founder of Kiss The Ground, a non-profit that provides education regarding the connection between soil, human, and planetary health. Among its board of advisors are former podcast guests Paul Hawken, Dr. Zach Bush and David Bronner. If you enjoyed those conversations, or last week's exchange with John & Molly Chester, then you're in for a treat with Ryland. This is a conversation about the importance of soil regeneration and its impact on everything from food security and climate change reversal to improving human health. We open with Ryland’s hippie upbringing. How he learned early the philosophy of using business as a force for good — something he calls sacred commerce. We discuss how doing good — adding value to people’s lives — is not only always the right thing to do, but also the best long-term path to profits. We explore the origins, trajectory and intentionality behind his family's incredible group of restaurants — Cafe Gratitude, Gracias Madre and his sister’s Sage Plant-Based Bistros — which together form the cornerstone of plant-based dining in Los Angeles and beyond. Then we dive into the principles of conscious capitalism, the importance of regenerative farming, and the reasons why soil health is such a crucial component in the holistic equation of sustainable human, animal and planetary health. Finally we discuss his various film projects, including his documentaries May I Be Frank* and Kiss The Ground — a must see you might have heard Woody Harrelson recently raving about on Marc Maron’s podcast. But more than anything, this is a conversation about love, awareness, and the power of gratitude as a living, breathing philosophy of life. You can watch it all go down on YouTube.... Seamlessly complementing each other throughout the 45 minute conversation, both guests brought unique insight to our discussion which connected soil, human, and planetary health. Ryland Engelhart currently serves as the Mission Fulfillment Officer and co-owner of Cafe Gratitude and Gracias Madre. Engelhart co-founder of Kiss The Ground, and now works tirelessly to educate and advocate about the movement.  As a storyteller, Ryland co-created the award-winning, transformational documentary film, “May I Be Frank.” Also, he’s an entrepreneur and activist, using his restaurants as a platform to inspire more “gratitude” into our culture.   Running the Kiss The Ground Farmland program, Jesse Smith adds unique acumen from the perspective of a producer and philosopher.  Smith is a farmer, designer and consultant focused on the intersection of regenerative supply and enterprise. His passion for agriculture and food systems is rooted in his love of California’s diverse ecosystems, and influenced by his work and travels through Africa, Europe and the western United States. Jessie’s family, friends and community are what inspire him to develop a network of farmers, restaurants and consumers to benefit our soil, water & air. In this episode we go deep into the problems, and potential solutions for a shrinking planet.  Ryland describes the impetus for formulating this unique arena of Kiss The Ground which seems set on democratizing complex subjects that will prove increasingly essential for stabilizing all corners of the world.  Engaging consumers and citizens as the agents of change, it was consensus amongst all of us that it has to be the grass-roots to lead us forward through this tumultuous and concerning time for the future health of our planet.  The people will lead, and the policy will (eventually) follow. Through the collection of their farms, non-profit initiative and restaurants this west coast collaborative is drafting a new recipe for moving us forward.  A mechanism that vertically integrates the value chain which will benefit the consumer of their food, fiber and fuel, and lead to positive externalities of regenerative results.   www.SourcingMatters.show

TODAY'S GUEST: I was born on August 26, 1951. According to my astrological chart, “peace and harmony are my battle cry.” (Talk about a perfect set-up for contradictions.) Apparently I am also “flashy but not gaudy and prefer to dress elegantly.” Obviously, my sartorial preferences reflect my greater spiritual depth. I have been, in no particular order, a NY City cab driver, scrap metal hauler, dishwasher, census taker, mail boy, ditch digger, bouncer, illegal narcotics distributor, general contractor, actor, and radio announcer, and carpenter. I am also an avid reader, seeker of God, weight gain/weight loss aficionado, ex-pot smoker, alcoholic, junkie, speed freak, raw foodist, vegan, lover, hater, father, husband, grad student, good guy, bad guy, social activist. I received my high school diploma when I was 51. I would have done it when I was younger but I was busy. Early in this century I was admitted to UCSB where I earned a BA in History. I then entered an MA program in the Humanities Department at San Francisco State University to sate a lifelong fascination in the subject. I'm particularly intrigued by the migration of cultures, peoples, and souls. As the subject of the documentary MAY I BE FRANK?, I have become a spokesperson for personal transformation and weight loss. My experience dealing with these struggles from a holistic perspective compels me to speak about the power of transformation that rests in all of us. I am not an expert nor do I have the answer. I have witnessed the indisputable fact that we are all connected. What we do can and will make a difference. I have learned that the three most important things a man can say are: I don't know.Would you please help me? I love you." HUNGRY FOR CHANGE exposes shocking secrets the diet, weight loss and food industry don't want you to know about; deceptive strategies designed to keep you coming back for more. Find out what's keeping you from having the body and health you deserve and how to escape the diet trap forever. In spite of the anxiety and uncertainty, I am so grateful to be alive and to participate in this adventure. I get to do my dream job. I travel and emotionally connect with people. The Beatles were right, ‘ ‘and in the end. The love you take is equal to the love you make.' I plan to make as much as possible. Connect With Today's guest: FRANK FERRANTE Website: http://www.mayispeakfrankly.com AND www.HungryForChange.tv Frank's Movie: http://amzn.to/2gp1HHR (affiliate link) On Twitter On Facebook IN THIS EPISODE: We all know that taking personal responsibility for your own issues and moving toward healing from the pain can be a hard thing to do. None of us come by that kind of courage naturally because the pain and fear hold us back. Normal is often more comfortable than the difficult path toward healing. But my guest today has a story that is a wonderful example of what can happen when you do take personal responsibility for your healing and walk the path to get there. I want you to meet Frank Ferrante, an inspirational author and speaker, on this episode of Vidal Speaks. Frank grew up in a very hostile, unhealthy environment. Those are his own words. It was the difficulty of those formative years that drove him to seek solace in all kinds of things that were not good for him, from hard drugs to overeating. But Frank has come to see that though he's still got significant pain from things done wrong to him, there's nobody responsible for changing the effect of those things except himself. I hope you'll listen to Frank Ferrante's story. It's not only inspiring, it's powerfully motivating for anyone who's struggling with addiction or obesity. You wouldn't expect a guy who was in Frank Ferrante's shoes to be the one to step beyond the pain and suffering he'd experienced to become an example for others to follow. His own wounds went so deep and his obesity and poor self-image were such debilitating problems, he was the last guy you'd consider for that kind of role. But an encounter with some young people who dared to love and encourage him made all the difference. When you hear the impact these simple gestures of friendship made in Frank's life you'll be able to see that your words and love toward others could make a powerful difference as well. It's never easy to deal with the pain of abuse and addiction. But there comes a point in every life where the pain becomes unacceptable and you have to do something about it. Frank Ferrante's story of overcoming those kinds of wounds is powerful because he wasn't even in a place to want that kind of healing when someone challenged him, through love, to take personal responsibility for himself and make positive changes. I hope you take the time to get to know Frank as he shares his story on this episode. He's got lots of heart and compassion and could be the one person who can speak to you right where you are. Life isn't a linear process. That's one of the things my guest on this episode, Frank Ferrante shares about how his progress and setbacks have contributed to making him who he is today. He's not one of those guru's who only lets you see the polished side of his life. In fact, he's not a guru at all. Frank is a normal guy who is very open about the continuing struggles he has and the hope that comes when he is honest about his life and the responsibility he has to take to make it better. You'll love the humble heart Frank speaks from, so I hope you'll take a bit of time to enjoy an inspirational story of overcoming the odds and making a change that lasts.
