Today we salut the multidimensional medicine of the vine with Barbara Gross of Cooper Mountain Vineyards! Barbara is a visionary in organic, biodynamic, alternative viticulture. As a second generation, natural wine grower and purveyor, our guest has faced countless challenges on a daily and multi-generational scale. Her family has devoted the last 46 years to transform conventional vineyards in Oregon's Willamette Valley into thriving, biodiverse, regenerative ecosystems; specializing in the cultivation of Pinot Noir (a varietal of grape most sensitive to environmental stress and the fluctuations of climate change). Through it all, Barbara has emerged as a sort of wildly down to earth, renegade leader in the wine industry. Tune in, pour yourself a glass of healing wine or tea and muse upon this Dionysian thought: could biodynamically farmed and alchemized wine help save our beloved Earth? COVERED Barbara's legacy of wine stewardship at Cooper Mountain Vineyards Organic + biodynamic certification processes Conscious Land Stewardship The art and science of Pinot Noir, a delicate and climate-sensitive varietal. How natural wines differ from conventional in both taste and their impact on personal & planetary health The role of agriculture in addressing climate change, with insights into carbon-neutral farming How organic, biodynamic vineyards are carbon sinkholes and help sequester up to 30% more carbon than conventional methods The importance of embracing cycles in farming and Life Why a Generational Mindset is needed OFFERING Enjoy 15% off all biodynamic wines + balsamic vinegars from www.coopermountainwine.com with the code SOUNDFOOD. Today we take on "Big Protein" and travel through the Andes Mountains, where generations of Inca wisdom takes seed in chocho, a magical bean which regenerates both people and the planet. Our guide is the magnetic Ricky Echanique. Ricky is a fifth-generation Ecuadorian farmer and entrepreneur. As a former professional athlete, Ricky faced health and digestion issues that set him on a quest to find better forms of plant-based protein. This journey ultimately led him back home to Ecuador where he discovered Chocho, a nearly forgotten food, traditionally grown in rural, high altitude regions as a rotation crop, which turns out to be incredibly high in bio-available protein, amino acids, minerals, and more. In the years since, Ricky has built a powerful network of indigenous farmers and vertically integrated systems to share Chocho with the world through his company MIKUNA. We discuss The regenerative roots of Mikuna Foods Ricky's journey with inflammation & plant-based proteins How Ricky discovered Chocho while exploring Amazonian herbs Nutrient profiles for different protein sources What makes Chocho a superior plant protein The resilience of Ecuadorian farmers & devotion to their land Why Reciprocity is key Thank you Ricky for sharing your journey of Mikuna Foods with us! enter SOUNDFOODFAMILY for 25% off everything Mikunafoods.com CONNECT Ricky Echanique: IG | Mikuna Foods Host @nitsacitrine @soundfoodspace Subscribe to Mercurial Mail (our monthly newsletter) MENTIONED Mikuna Foods Kelly Ryerson Steven Donziger Nathalie Kelley EP 86: PROTECTING OUR SOIL AND CELLS with Kelly Ryerson YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: EP 62: TRANSFORMATION THROUGH REGENERATION with John Roulac EP 32: A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS: Film, Farming, Fungi and the Future with Nathalie Kelley EP 36: THE FUTURE IS SYMBIOTIC: Radical Indigenism and Lo-TEK Design with Julia Watson NOURISH This podcast is supported by your donations and our symbiotic partnerships: Make a donation here LIVING LIBATIONS: enjoy 15% off all botanical beauty alchemy with this link https://livinglibations.com/soundfood(discount automatically applied) MIKUNA: enter SOUNDFOODFAMILY for 25% off regenerative plant protein from Mikunafoods.com LIVING TEA: use SOUNDFOOD for 15% off all tea livingtea.net SUPERFEAST: enter CITRINE for 10% off our favorite tonic herbs + superfoods superfeast.com OSEA: enter CITRINE for 10% off oseamalibu.com sea-to-skin magic P.S. Today we gather around our proverbial table for a deeply nourishing conversation about food, family, and friendship. Our guest, Sarah Britton, is a holistic nutritionist and chef, who's been publishing whole food recipes on My New Roots since 2007. Our discussion touches upon the full spectrum from farm to fork, beginning with Sarah's childhood, her creative evolution, lifelong relationship to food, beauty, working in professional kitchens, and how she was guided to write her books. Sarah shares her experience creating her first book while pregnant, how she leaned into her fine arts background to approach the dinner plate as a canvas of sorts, and how she has developed more kid-friendly, whole food meals for her (extended) family to enjoy. We travel the world together, talking about Sarah's retreats in Bali and Tuscany, as well as the time she spent living in Copenhagen and now in Ontario. Today we call in the vernal equinox with renewed energy, strength and vision. As we transition from Winter to Spring, we move from formlessness to form, contraction to expansion, Yin to Yang, and the Element of Wood. We welcome back dearest Colin Hudon, herbalist, acupuncturist, practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and founder of Living Tea for a wisdom-steeped dialogue on how to work with the energies of Spring in the year of the Wood Dragon. In Taoist medicine, Spring is associated with the liver, gall bladder, and the wood element, which represents growth and an unstoppable force of energy. This is a time of rebirth, flexibility, perserverance, resilience, and letting go to grow. It is a season rooted in vision, creativity, planning and concrete action. In this episode we cover how the wood element manifests in our inner and outer worlds, how to learn from conflict and limitation, the power of observing emotions, how to recognize and repair elemental imbalances, when to detox, how to crystallize and execute clear vision, and ways to support our systems through the seasonal shift with diet, meditation, mindfulness and tea. Could the fate of humanity rest in our food system? We are facing an uncertain future. Precious ecosystems are being decimated, global systems teeter on the brink of collapse, and the bad news keeps coming…. But, there is some good news. The changes needed to transform these broken systems may be disarmingly simple – and as our guest Oliver English shares today – they can also be delicious! Food has been weaponized, commodified, exploited, extracted, and genetically modified… Yet, it remains one of the single most unifying and healing forces for life on earth. Food was our first medicine. Every living being needs to eat. It is at the center. Chef, filmmaker, and entrepreneur, Oliver English is here to nourish this awareness. Oliver's feature documentary ‘Feeding Tomorrow' releases this week and illustrates how deeply interconnected our food system is to our environment, our bodies, and society. Seven years in the making, the film weaves together the stories of a dynamic group of innovators working across agriculture, healthcare, and education and casts a powerful vision for a regenerative future. Our conversation explores these critical intersections between personal and planetary wellbeing and beams light on how we can all take part in the shift. Thank you Oliver! Today we are joined by the award-winning filmmakers Josh and Rebecca Tickell to discuss their latest film Common Ground and how we need to work with nature and not against it if we want to save our planet. Common Ground is the highly-anticipated follow up to the documentary, Kiss the Ground, and tells the story of the growing Regenerative Agriculture Movement. Narrated by Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Rosario Dawson, Woody Harrelson, Ian Somerhalder, and Donald Glover ~ the film follows the farmers, gardeners, scientists, scholars, activists and visionaries who are creating resilient, biodiverse food systems that produce tremendous amounts of nutritionally dense food while balancing the climate, healing our bodies, stabilizing the economy, and restoring our ecosystems. Our conversation explores the critical intersections of food, politics, power, climate, economy, culture, soil health, survival and the future of humanity. Josh and Rebecca open up about their creative process, daily life on Big Picture Ranch in Ojai, the journey of making this independent film, their mission to convert 100 Million Acres in the US to regenerative farmland, and shared intention for Common Ground to serve as a love letter, wake up call and roadmap for healing Earth for our future generations. This episode lands just before Equinox with the intention to share gentle guidance and Taoist wisdom as we transition from summer to autumn, from the outer to inner, yang to yin and the Element of Metal. We are delighted to welcome back Colin Hudon, herbalist, acupuncturist, practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and founder of our beloved brand Living Tea for a cosmic dialogue on this powerful time of year. Autumn is the season of contraction, surrender, and release. The focus shifts inwards and when navigated consciously, this season can nurture immense personal growth. Today we cover a rich spectrum of topics, from planetary consciousness as it relates to earth's cycles to our relationship to grief, attachment, the layers of seasonality, how man and woman hold the potential to embody the microcosm of the macrocosm, natural bio-tech, and of course, how to support our systems through the seasonal shift with diet, meditation, mindfulness and tea. Food for thought: the solution to our climate crisis already exists. In fact, it lies right under our feet. It begins and ends with our SOIL - and we are honored to welcome a leader in the regenerative movement, John Roulac to explain why. John is a powerhouse with a deeply caring heart and conscience. Serial entrepreneur, investor, climate activist, Roulac has sourced and formulated $1B in retail sales of organic superfoods (with Nutiva), served as executive producer of the film "Kiss the Ground” and upcoming “Common Ground” and has leveraged his success to found six non-profit organizations, including Agroforestry Regeneration Communities (ARC) and Forests Forever. In this episode, John and Nitsa dive into an unfiltered dialogue around food security, sovereignty, soil cycles, how the regenerative model can be used to save small > large scale farms, failing businesses and ecosystems on the brink of collapse, the dangers of green/brain/washing, and why challenging the status quo is crucial.
