Coach C. Collins is ready to talk more AAU basketball, life and everything in between. In this episode, the coach had a chance to sit down with Rahid "Shine" and Andrej Stojakovic(Son of former NBA player Peja Stojakovic). In this episode we got to really breakdown the journey to become a high level basketball player but also the relationship between player and trainer.  With guys like Phil Handy and Lebron James showcasing the importance of a lead trainer and player relationship, the trust that is needed for this to work is key for the athlete to reach there full potential. Andrej has had a breakout career the past two seasons at Jesuit High School becoming a McDonalds All-American, leading Jesuit as a captain and scoring also playing for the famous Compton Magic AAU program on the adidas 3ssb circuit.  Shine has been with him every step of the way and with Andrej committing to Stanford university along with Jesuit Alumni Isa Silva, both trained by Shine, this creates a culture and legacy the show wants to talk more about. ------------------------------ If you wish to support the show Podbean Patron: https://patron.podbean.com/boutthatlifeaau Patreon Account: https://www.patreon.com/join/Boutthatlife? Al Harrington was such a basketball late bloomer in high school, his own mother wouldn't come to his games. What was the point if her son was riding the bench? But hard work and a growth spurt turned Al Harrington from so-so hooper to the nation's top high school player by his senior year. In '98, he was a McDonalds All-American, and the Gatorade and USA Today Player of the Year. Drafted out of high school in the 1st round pick by the Indiana Pacers. Harrington reveals the profane warning that Larry Bird, the Pacers Head Coach, barked at him when he showed up late for his first team meeting. Harrington describes what he learned from veteran teammates like Antonio Davis and Reggie Miller that helped forge professional habits over his 16-year NBA career with multiple teams. Harrington talks to Rich and Gianni about his surprising entry point into the cannabis business, which began with Harrington's search for ways to help his grandmother, Viola, cope with her glaucoma and diabetes symptoms. Harrington later met with then-NBA commissioner, David Stern, and managed to change Stern's opinion about the dangers of cannabis. That meeting paved the way for the NBA to set the tone for how pro leagues take a more tolerant stance on marijuana use by players. In this powerful episode, Harrington drops many gems, including his stunning estimate of the number of NBA players who used marijuana when he started in the league in the late ‘90s, a number he believes has held steady to this day. This week's episode is a special one…focused solely on our interview with Matt Doherty.  Matt's background is an impressive one…McDonalds All-American in high school. Starter on the 1982 NCAA championship team at the University of North Carolina with future NBA greats Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Coached by the legendary coach Dean Smith. After playing, Matt eventually found his way into coaching, first as an assistant at Davidson and Kansas before launching his head coaching career at Notre Dame. After 1 brief but successful year, Matt was “called home” to be the head coach at his alma mater, North Carolina. He led UNC for 3 years, where he was named AP National Coach of the year 2001. After a painful firing at UNC, he moved on to head jobs at FAU and SMU.  Since he hung up his whistle as a basketball coach, Matt has entered the world of media and leadership coaching, working with ESPN, several radio shows, and he has also held a leadership role in the Atlantic 10 conference. Last thing, and very timely, Matt has authored a book on leadership, Rebound, from Pain to Passion.   Wrapping this week's episode after an insightful interview with Matt, Mike shares a few thoughts… Have feedback, topic suggestions, or just want to say hello? On May 6, 2019, Howard University Director of Athletics Kery Davis announced the hiring of Kenneth Blakeney as its men's basketball head coach. In his first season at the helm, Blakeney coached Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Time Leading Scorer Charles Williams where he earned All-MEAC honors. He also witnessed Wayne Bristol, Jr. winning 2019-20 MEAC Rookie of the Year. Blakeney brings a wealth of experience and a winning pedigree to the program. He has coached at seven Division I universities over a 12-year span. He has been associated with winning as a player, coach and business entrepreneur. Raised in Washington, D.C., Blakeney was a McDonalds All- American and Gatorade Player of the Year at the famed DeMatha Catholic High School, playing for Hall of Fame Coach Morgan Wooten, the winningest high school coach in history. Following his stellar scholastic career, Blakeney headed to Durham, N.C., to play for the Duke Blue Devils under the direction of Head Coach Mike Krzyzewski. During his Duke career, the Blue Devils compiled a record of 99-34 which included winning two national championships. After receiving his bachelor's degree in history from Duke, Blakeney secured his first coaching position as the assistant men's basketball coach at James Madison under Hall of Fame Coach Lefty Driesell. Blakeney later moved on to the men's basketball staff at LaSalle University where he recruited and developed Rasual Butler, a 2002 NBA draft pick for the Miami Heat. Blakeney then moved on to the University of Delaware where he served as the Head Assistant under now current Notre Dame coach Mike Brey. During his time in Delaware, Blakeney conducted coaching clinics and lectured in Senegal and Turkey as part of NBA educational efforts. He also assisted in the recruitment of three nationally ranked recruiting classes from 2003-06 at Delaware. Blakeney lectured in the physical education department, coordinated community relations events and initiated a marketing campaign called the “6MAN”. After one-year stints at St. Bonaventure and Marshall, Blakeney went on to have a successful career at Harvard University. Working under Head Coach and former Duke standout Tommy Amaker, he assisted in capturing the program's first Ivy League Title and NCAA Tournament berth since 1946. Blakeney also helped recruit two back to back Top 50 recruiting classes in 2008 and 2009, with the 2008 class being named to the ESPN Top 25. He also discovered and developed 10-year NBA veteran Jeremy Lin. After his four years at Harvard, Blakeney co-founded a fashion accessory company named Sportin' Styles. Additionally, he joined apparel giant Under Armour where he worked with NBA, College and Grass Roots division. In 2018, he returned to the sidelines and the Ivy League at Columbia University (SOURCE: https://hubison.com/).
