We're wearing our Hot Topic sweatshirts and enunciating every dramatic syllable to pay tribute to one of the greatest animated films of all time - Tim Burton's (but really Henry Selick's) THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. Academy Award-nominated animator and Blankie Michael Rianda (THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES) joins us to talk about this multi-holiday classic, which is basically just a movie about a creative weirdo trying to fit in at Disney. Is this the boniest movie we've covered on the podcast? Does Halloween Town have the best minor background characters since the Mos Eisley cantina? What is the St. Patrick's Day Town like? Dylan makes his first ever flick picks for Ryan to watch: oscar-nominated animated film The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Michael Bay's action extravaganza The Rock.
This episode is all about the threat of robots taking over and one family trying to stop them! That's right, it could be sooner than we think, but before our cell phones plan an apocalypse let's turn to the animated comedy "The Mitchells vs. The Machines"! Directed by Michael Rianda and released in 2021, "The Mitchells vs. The Machines" showcases an incredibly talented cast of voice actors, animation, and story. As the first feature length film that Michael Rianda has directed and released, does it truly live up to the hype? We discuss this and more on our episode this week! Plot: Young Katie Mitchell embarks on a road trip with her proud parents, younger brother and beloved dog to start her first year at film school. But their plans to bond as a family soon get interrupted when the world's electronic devices come to life to stage an uprising. With help from two friendly robots, the Mitchells must now come together to save one another -- and the planet -- from the new technological revolution.
Katie-Vision, Malfunctoning Robots, and Olivia Colman as the voice of a malicious AI. This joyful animated film has a high joke ratio and a smart approach to representing queerness. Michael Rianda and Jeff Rowe are the creative minds behind one of the most riotously funny and inventive movies of this year. In The Mitchells Vs The Machines, two terrible things happen to young filmmaker Katie Mitchell. First, her dad decides to surprise her by taking the entire family on a cross-country road trip on the eve of her going to college. And second, the tech apocalypse strikes, enslaving pretty much all mankind. It's neck and neck as to which one is worse for Katie, voiced by Abbi Jacobson. Together, it's up to the Mitchells to stop the robot uprising and save the world.Featuring groundbreaking animation, hilarious movie references and Olivia Colman as an evil Alexa, The Mitchells vs The Machines had it all. But, as you'll discover in today's episode, the film almost went in a very different direction. Originally titled Control Alt Escape, their first draft found the Mitchells on a mission with the President of the United States. It had a drastically different ending and a reduced role for two of the movie's standout characters: glitching robots Eric and Deborahbot 5000. In the conversation you're about to hear, we dig into all of those changes, as well as the film's graceful LGBTQ+ representation, its chances of a sequel and yes, that scene with the demonic Furby. This is a spoiler conversation, so be sure to watch The Mitchells Vs The Machines on Netflix before listening.Support for this episode comes from Arc Studio – the beautifully-designed screenwriting programme whose intuitive interface and host of innovative features helps you get the most out of your writing time – and Coverfly, who curate the best screenwriting talent-discovery programs into one place and connect emerging screenwriters with industry professionals who can bring their ideas to screen.Script Apart is a podcast about the first-draft secrets behind great movies. One of the strongest animated films outside of Pixar in a long time. Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Eric Andre, Olivia Coleman, Johnn Legend, Conan O'Brien all give a great performance in this fact paced action with some emotion mixed in. A wonderful and newer animation style mixed with visuals on the screen make sure you are never bored while Monchi the dog and the family's new two robot friends are constantly making you laugh every few minutes with smart jokes and clever writing that seems to never get old. Everything about this one is 2021 relevant with an evil Apple ripoff the main villain. Don't miss this. (9/10) Tom Clancy's Without Remorse The Tom Clancy universe is well know. Jack Ryan takes a break on this outing and jives his counterpart John Kelly a chance to shine. Michael B Jordan is John kelly- an elite Navy Seal is set on a 6th to find his wife's killer only to find the conspiracy goes much deeper than surface level- as is par the course with most Tom Clancy. The gunplay and choreography are good, though NOT John Wick or Nobody level, unfortunately. (Perhaps we were too spoiled by those.). Guy Pierce and Jamie Bell also appear along side Jordan in an action thriller that, unfortunately, leaves a little to be desires. Watch past the credits for our introduction to the Rainbow 6 team. (4/10) Hosted, produced and mixed by Grayson Maxwell and Roger Stillion. Guest appearance by Chris Boughan. Music by Chad Wall. Quality Assurance by Anthony Emmett. An animated film about one family trying to stop a robot invasion from taking over the world doesn't seem like the sort of movie that's going to elicit tears, but that's what The Mitchells vs the Machines did here. In this episode, Andy Nelson is joined in the board room by Mandy Kaplan from the MandCave podcast, Pete Wright from The Next Reel Film Podcast, and Steve Sarmento from Trailer Rewind to talk about Michael Rianda's new animated film produced by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (The Lego Movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse). Needless to say, we all loved it. But what do we pull out of the themes as the titular Mitchell family works to come together as they fight off this deadly tech? What were the biggest laughs for us? And how stunning did we find the animation?
